Incest And Empire In The Faerie Queene, Kent Lehnhof Jan 2006

Incest And Empire In The Faerie Queene, Kent Lehnhof

English Faculty Articles and Research

"When considered in the context of Elizabeth's effort to silence all discussion of incest, Edmund Spenser's courtly epic aiming to cultivate favor with the monarch looks like a disastrous miscalculation, for incest appears throughout The Faerie Queene. Indeed, incest sits at the center (both literally and figuratively) of the Book of Chastity, the very book wherein Spenser encourages Elizabeth 'in mirrours more then one her selfe to see.' In the present essay, I investigate the apparently illogical and impolitic prominence afforded to incest in book three of The Faerie Queene, ultimately arguing that the imperialist logic underpinning the epic is …

Suggestive Interviewing In The Mcmartin Preschool And Kelly Michaels Daycare Abuse Cases: A Case Study, Nadja Schreiber, Lisa Bellah, Yolanda Martinez, Kristin Mclaurin, Renata Strok, Sena Garven, James Wood Jan 2006

Suggestive Interviewing In The Mcmartin Preschool And Kelly Michaels Daycare Abuse Cases: A Case Study, Nadja Schreiber, Lisa Bellah, Yolanda Martinez, Kristin Mclaurin, Renata Strok, Sena Garven, James Wood

Departmental Papers (Psych)

In the 1980s and early 1990s the United States witnessed an outbreak of bizarre "daycare abuse" cases in which groups of young children leveled allegations of sexual and Satanic abuse against their teachers. In the present study, quantitative analyses were performed on interview transcripts from two highly publicized daycare cases (McMartin Preschool and Kelly Michaels) and a Child Protection Service (CPS). Confirming the impression of prior commentators, systematic analyses of 54 interviews indicated that suggestive techniques were much more common in the McMartin and Michaels interviews than in the CPS interviews.

The Continuing War On Academic Freedom And Tenure: Will They Survive?, Keith T. Hardeman Jan 2006

The Continuing War On Academic Freedom And Tenure: Will They Survive?, Keith T. Hardeman

Iowa Journal of Communication

Since knowledge is not a product that can be shaped and manufactured to meet the spiritual or political needs of various customers, academic freedom must exist to protect faculty in the ultimate search for and dissemination of truth. Just as freedom of speech is safeguarded by the Constitution, academic freedom must be defended by tenure. This article explains the need for tenure by addressing its more popular fallacies and some of the current attempts to erode its strength.

Legal Patterns Of Global Governance: Participatory Transnational Governance, Rainer Nickel Jan 2006

Legal Patterns Of Global Governance: Participatory Transnational Governance, Rainer Nickel

Comparative Research in Law & Political Economy

Multilevel trade governance and transnational social regulation put democratic self-regulation under stress. A growing number of supra- and transnational norms, rules, and regulations on trade, environmental issues, or any other field of regulation, prove that we are facing another great transformation, the transformation of international relations and intergovernmental politics into law-generating fora, with government and private networks and a number of court-like institutions as central actors. This process of transnational juridification limits parliamentary rooms for manoeuvre and comprehensively alienates many citizens submitted to transnational regulation from this process. This contribution attempts to clarify the mechanisms at work. In a second …

Soft-Science Examiners At The Uspto: A Non-Obvious Solution To Reduce Erroneous Patent Grants, Mandy Barbara Seuffert Jan 2006

Soft-Science Examiners At The Uspto: A Non-Obvious Solution To Reduce Erroneous Patent Grants, Mandy Barbara Seuffert

Marquette Intellectual Property Law Review

Soft science graduates can participate in patent application review, or secondary review, at the USPTO when there exists a question as to a patent's validity or obviousness. Four reasons militate in favor of including soft science patent application reviews: (1) the PTO can increase the number of examiners at a relatively low cost; (2) more time can be devoted to each questionable patent application review; (3) soft science examiners use complimentary skills and insights that might promote fewer erroneous patent approvals; and, (4) fewer parties will be forced to litigate over patent validity. This paper examines the rising problems associated …

Presidential Influences On Civil Rights Visits To The Presidential Libraries, Willie E. Fowler Jan 2006

Presidential Influences On Civil Rights Visits To The Presidential Libraries, Willie E. Fowler

Sabbaticals

I propose a one semester (Fall 2007) sabbatical study which will be conducted during the academic year of 2007. Though I know most sabbatical leaves are granted for the spring semester of the academic year, I ask for Fall consideration so that I can take advantage of the extra collections that are only made available at the libraries during the Fall Holiday Season. By granting the sabbatical in the Fall of 2007, you would also afford me the ability to experience the oral arguments of the US Supreme Court in October.

Indeed, this sabbatical study will allow me to continue …

A Cross-Cultural Study Of Weddings Through Media And Ritual: Analyzing Indian And North American Weddings, Erika Buckley Jan 2006

A Cross-Cultural Study Of Weddings Through Media And Ritual: Analyzing Indian And North American Weddings, Erika Buckley

McNair Scholars Journal

The wedding is one of the only rituals or events that many cultures of the world consistently have in common. Weddings are found in almost every society. A wedding can feed consumer appetites and the industry that supports it. Costs for the average United States wedding can range from $26,000 to $35,530 or more (“Cost of Weddings” 2006). The costs of Indian wedding ceremonies vary from $34,000 up to $2 million (Das 2005). Despite this large range the Indian wedding industry averages only $11billion annually while its American counterpart is a whopping $50 billion each year (“Cost of Weddings” 2006, …

Factors Of Effectiveness In Kentucky Nonprofit Social Welfare Organizations, Peggy J. Proudfoot Harman Jan 2006

Factors Of Effectiveness In Kentucky Nonprofit Social Welfare Organizations, Peggy J. Proudfoot Harman

Social Work Faculty Research

This dissertation is an exploratory, mixed methods study using grounded perspective to examine how stakeholders (including consumers, administrators, and practitioners) in social welfare organizations perceive effectiveness in the nonprofit social welfare sector. Focus groups were held in eight regions constituting the Area Health Education Centers (AHEC) in Kentucky. A total of 25 people participated in the study. A theoretical framework of nonprofit social welfare organizational effectiveness emerged from the data indicating that the five most significant factors identified by stakeholders as constituting effectiveness in the nonprofit social welfare sector in Kentucky were (a) client services, (b) organizational structure (c) workplace …

Machine Scoring Of Student Essays: Truth And Consequences, Patricia Freitag Ericsson, Richard H. Haswell Jan 2006

Machine Scoring Of Student Essays: Truth And Consequences, Patricia Freitag Ericsson, Richard H. Haswell

All USU Press Publications

The current trend toward machine-scoring of student work, Ericsson and Haswell argue, has created an emerging issue with implications for higher education across the disciplines, but with particular importance for those in English departments and in administration. The academic community has been silent on the issue—some would say excluded from it—while the commercial entities who develop essay-scoring software have been very active. Machine Scoring of Student Essays is the first volume to seriously consider the educational mechanisms and consequences of this trend, and it offers important discussions from some of the leading scholars in writing assessment.

Access And Resilience: Analyzing The Construction Of Social Resilience To The Threat Of Water Scarcity, Ruth Langridge, Juliet Christian-Smith, Kathleen A. Lohse Jan 2006

Access And Resilience: Analyzing The Construction Of Social Resilience To The Threat Of Water Scarcity, Ruth Langridge, Juliet Christian-Smith, Kathleen A. Lohse

All UNF Research

Resilience is a vital attribute that characterizes a system’s capacity to cope with stress. Researchers have examined the measurement of resilience in ecosystems and in social–ecological systems, and the comparative vulnerability of social groups. Our paper refocuses attention on the processes and relations that create social resilience. Our central proposition is that the creation of social resilience is linked to a community’s ability to access critical resources. We explore this proposition through an analysis of how community resilience to the stress of water scarcity is influenced by historically contingent mechanisms to gain, control, and maintain access to water. Access is …

From The Forest To The River: Citizens' Views Of Stakeholder Engagement, Gregg B. Walker, Susan L. Senecah, Steven E. Daniels Jan 2006

From The Forest To The River: Citizens' Views Of Stakeholder Engagement, Gregg B. Walker, Susan L. Senecah, Steven E. Daniels

Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications

Since the early 1990s collaboration and consensus processes have become associated with success in the environmental policy and natural resource policy arenas. Interest in collaboration and consensus processes have emerged, in part, out of a frustration with more conventional efforts used to involve stakeholders, to work though conflicts, and to make decisions in the environmental and natural resource policy arenas. Collaboration and consensus processes, when designed well and applied appropriately, provide opportunities for meaningful stakeholder engagement. This essay features aspects of two government-led or agency-based (Koontz et al. 2004; Moore and Koontz 2003) planning efforts that consider collaboration and citizens/stakeholder …

The Adjudication Of Presidential Power In The U.S. Supreme Court:A Predictive Model Of Individual Justice Voting, Todd Curry Jan 2006

The Adjudication Of Presidential Power In The U.S. Supreme Court:A Predictive Model Of Individual Justice Voting, Todd Curry

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The interaction between the President and Congress is many times quite public and well documented (Cronin 1980; Covington et al. 1995; Fisher 1994; Schlesinger 2004). Similarly, relations between the Congress and the Supreme Court are well documented; Congress makes law and, if requested, the Court interprets it. The interaction between the president and the Court, however, is not nearly as well defined, and certainly not as public. Supreme Court cases involving the president directly are fairly rare. King and Meernik (1995) identify 347 cases involving the foreign policy powers of the president, decided from 1790 to 1996, which is roughly …

College Drinking, Greek Affiliation And The Need To Fit In: An Analysis Of Social Norms And Motivations Associated With Fraternity And Sorority Binge Drinking, Chantel Dufrene

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study proposes that members of Greek social organizations have higher rates of binge drinking as compared to other college students due to their greater acceptance of norms and motives that support binge drinking. The College Alcohol Study, a survey conducted by the Harvard School of Public Heath, was administered to 10, 904 university students. The survey measured various aspects of students' experiences at their respective universities including experiences with and perceptions of alcohol use. Logistic regression analysis was used to determine normative and motivational predictors of binge drinking for Greek and non-Greek students. The results show that Greek members …

In addition, the researcher hopes to obtain a better understanding of Salvadorian children's self-esteem. Forty male and female Salvadorian student ages 8-11 years-old participated in this study. They were first administered the Coopersmith SEI-SF to determine levels of global self-esteem, followed by instructions to draw in pencil a House, Tree and Person. Lastly, participants were …
