North Korean refugees are an especially vulnerable group.

“Temporary Gentlemen” On The Western Front: Class Consciousness And The British Army Officer, 1914-1918, Laura Root Jan 2006

“Temporary Gentlemen” On The Western Front: Class Consciousness And The British Army Officer, 1914-1918, Laura Root

All Volumes (2001-2008)

A careful evaluation of diaries and memoirs of British temporary officers in World War I suggests that the class consciousness and Regular Army ideals inculcated during training had little bearing on officers’ actual experiences on the front lines. Their accounts confirm previous scholars’ conclusions about the presence of class feelings among officers, but the value they place on military effectiveness in the trenches is much more significant. After 1914, high casualty rates among junior officers forced the British army to seek candidates for commissions from social classes that, before the war, would not have been considered officer material. Accounts from …

Entrepreneur- Investor Negotiations: Investigating The Power Gap, Karen Page, Robert Sprague

Journal of Business & Leadership: Research, Practice, and Teaching (2005-2012)

Federal Securities Laws are designed to ensure that investors are provided with sufficient information to make an informed investment. These Laws presume that investors are relatively naive and powerless compared to the relatively sophisticated and powerful sellers of securities. In the new venture arena, however, it is often the case that sellers, the entrepreneurs, are relatively naive and powerless compared to the investors, who tend to be expert in venture finance. This paper explores these heretofore unexamined power imbalances and presents attributes of the entrepreneurs and their resources that may affect entrepreneurs' ability to negotiate with venture capitalists.

In many different context within organizations today, attempts are made by direct reports to influence the decisions of their leaders. Under what conditions are attempts by direct reports to influence their leaders' pay allocation decisions most effective? Wit at effect does a threat by the subordinate have on the leader's decision? Does the severity of the threat used matter? In an attempt to answer these questions, a study was conducted of leaders' pay allocation decisions under …

Capital Accessibility, Gender, And Ethnicity: The Case Of Minority Women-Owned Firms, Leyland M. Lucas

New England Journal of Entrepreneurship

Minority women continue to make significant gains in economic activity, particularly as entrepreneurs through the creation of small businesses. Despite this increased role in small business activity and an admirable rate of success, minority women-owned businesses continue to experience problems in acquiring capital. This difficulty, which some have attributed to discriminatory practices, forces a large number of these businesses to rely on governmental support programs for assistance in meeting their capital needs. Building on the idea that things are not as simple as commonly presented, a case is made that access to capital for women-owned businesses is affected by a …

The Family Novel In The Emerging Nation-State: A Comparative Study Of Ba Jin’S Jia And Lev Tolstoy’S Anna Karenina, Adil D'Sousa

Undergraduate Research Symposium (UGRS)

The theme of family in literature and in popular discourse occurs at times when the family as an institution is under attack. Attacks against the family coupled with defence of the family are viewed as the barometer of people’s satisfaction with the society in which they live. This outpouring of emotion, whether it is in defence of or attacking the family, is the result of the family’s position on the bridge between nature and society – a fortunate (or a detrimental) link between an individual and the units that make up a society. Across the United States and much of …

Marketing Social Change: A Comparative Historical And Methodological Analysis Of Anti-Smoking Endeavors, Jessica Stathis

Undergraduate Research Symposium (UGRS)

Even though assessing social marketing endeavors proves to be challenging, evaluators can learn from previous campaigns and identify which facets of social marketing events, programs and campaigns need to be improved. Additionally, by analyzing social movements and evaluating how they connect to social marketing, we can gain a clearer view on ways to ameliorate the field of social marketing. As social marketing becomes increasingly sophisticated and similar to commercial marketing, there is hope that social marketing can yield higher rates of success in the future. Friend and Levy (2002) claimed that it was nearly impossible to compare social marketing endeavors …
