Knowledges Of The Creative Economy: Towards A Relational Geography Of Diffusion And Adaptation In Asia, Lily Kong, Chris Gibson, Louisa-May Khoo, Anne-Louise Semple Aug 2006

Knowledges Of The Creative Economy: Towards A Relational Geography Of Diffusion And Adaptation In Asia, Lily Kong, Chris Gibson, Louisa-May Khoo, Anne-Louise Semple

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Recent dialogues in geography and the social sciences have reminded researchers of the extent to which academic and policy knowledges are socially and spatially embedded-that is, they circulate through formal and informal systems of publishing, exchange, commodification and cultural influence. Academic and policy knowledges are, in short, very much a part of the creative economy. In light of this, our paper surveys knowledges of the creative economy itself, as reflected in a geography of industry reports and government policy statements in selected Asian countries. Using a post-positivist framework adapted from diffusion theory, we critically interpret the circulation, mutation and adaptation …

Perceptions Of The Future Need For Family And Consumer Sciences Teachers In North Dakota's Public Schools, Elaine H. Ann Larson

Theses and Dissertations

Family and consumer sciences (FACS) school programs provide some of the earliest opportunities for students to learn relationship, communications, teamwork, and decision-making skills that support and strengthen family life and to make healthy lifestyle choices that have a positive impact on all of society. Unfortunately, research data document a shortage of F ACS teachers across the nation. Without an increasing supply of teachers, many programs may be weakened and some may be eliminated.

The purpose of this study is to identify the future need for F ACS teachers in the North Dakota public schools. A secondary purpose is to identify …

A Critical Exploration Of The Rhetoric Of Equity Belied By Practice In Postgraduate Teacher Education, Roisin Donnelly Aug 2006

A Critical Exploration Of The Rhetoric Of Equity Belied By Practice In Postgraduate Teacher Education, Roisin Donnelly

Journal Articles

This paper presents the initial results of an investigation into the current awareness and perceptions of equity issues amongst academic staff working on a postgraduate learning and teaching course for teachers in tertiary education in the Republic of Ireland. The study is set in the contemporary landscape of discourses around equality, egalitarianism and equity in education generally. The Irish White Paper on Adult Education Learning for Life (2000) recommends that adult education should be underpinned by three core principles, one of which is to promote equality of access, participation and outcome for participants in adult education, with pro-active strategies to …

It Takes A Town To Build A Trail: Relationships Between Nonprofit Organizations And Local Governments In Rail-Trail And Greenway Development In Three West Virginia Communities, Kelly L. Pack Aug 2006

It Takes A Town To Build A Trail: Relationships Between Nonprofit Organizations And Local Governments In Rail-Trail And Greenway Development In Three West Virginia Communities, Kelly L. Pack

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

As more communities across the country are developing rail-trails and greenways, relationships among community-based nonprofit organizations and local government entities evolve during trail development. Twenty-three participants from the nonprofit and local government sectors in three West Virginia municipalities were interviewed about their relationships and experience in rail-trail and greenway development. This qualitative analysis employs a grounded theory framework and reveals several practical and theoretical findings. Perceived benefits and costs of trail development reported by participants provided a context for how participants relayed experiences indicative of their political and built environments. Factors that constrain or facilitate relationship building between nonprofit organizations …

A Reexamination Of The Distributive Politics Model And The Allocation Of Federal Community Development Block Grant (Cdbg) Dollars, Howard A. Stern Aug 2006

A Reexamination Of The Distributive Politics Model And The Allocation Of Federal Community Development Block Grant (Cdbg) Dollars, Howard A. Stern

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The literature on the distributive politics model suggests that elected officials strategically allocate public benefits to curry favors, secure votes and gain reelection. In other words, elected officials distribute public benefits in such a way as to enhance their own personal careers and goals. Unfortunately, this centralized, top-down perspective (Rich 1989), which focuses exclusively on the motivations of the elected officials, fails to consider the political, economic and social characteristics of the governmental unit represented by the officials. These contextual factors may influence the allocation decisions made by the elected officials. Thus, an expanded distributive politics model---one that takes into …

Network Effects And Spatial Autoregression In Mode Choice Models: Three Essays In Urban Transportation Economics, Frank Goetzke Aug 2006

Network Effects And Spatial Autoregression In Mode Choice Models: Three Essays In Urban Transportation Economics, Frank Goetzke

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Network analysis in transportation economics has traditionally focused on congestion as a negative externality stemming from supply-side capacity constraints. In my first paper paper, an analytical mode choice model is developed to examine the demand-side network effects. The assumption behind the approach is that, because of social network effects, the utility of people taking the mode increases with its mode share. It is found that social network effects change the modal aggregate demand curve for the mode to an inverted u-shape. This result has far-reaching policy consequences, since multiple equilibria become a possibility, causing positive externalities and path-dependency.;Transportation planners have …

History, Identity, And Security: Producing And Consuming Nationalism In China, William A. Callahan Aug 2006

History, Identity, And Security: Producing And Consuming Nationalism In China, William A. Callahan

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Chinese nationalism has ignited much debate among academics and the general public in both China and the West. Rather than search for the true core of Chinese nationalism, this essay will examine the curious custom of National Humiliation Day as an oblique entry into the politics of identity. The nation is not simply a question of people or territory, the author contends, but of time: the national time scripted by events such as National Humiliation Day. By comparing the differing practices of the holiday as it was celebrated in the early twentieth century and is observed in the early twenty-first …

Coach Effectiveness And Personality Assessments: An Exploratory Analysis Of Thin Slice Interpersonal Perceptions, Jennifer Lynne Knight Aug 2006

Coach Effectiveness And Personality Assessments: An Exploratory Analysis Of Thin Slice Interpersonal Perceptions, Jennifer Lynne Knight

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

This research examined accuracy, consensus, and self-other agreement of personality assessments and coaching effectiveness based on thin-slice judgments of 30-second video clips of 9 recreation level coaches. Two hundred and six naive raters viewed the clips and rated the targets on coaching effectiveness and personality attributes. Ratings of coaching effectiveness were correlated with expert ratings of effectiveness to measure accuracy. The ratings of attributes were correlated with expert ratings of the same attributes to measure consensus. Gender, race, and level of sport participation of naive raters was subjected to independent sample t-tests and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) to determine …

Trading Sex: Voluntary Or Coerced? The Experiences Of Homeless Youth, Kimberly A. Tyler, Katherine Johnson

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

This study examined the circumstances surrounding a homeless youth’s “decision” to trade sex for food, money, shelter, or drugs. Forty homeless youth in 4 Midwestern states participated in individual, in-depth qualitative interviews. Interviewers recruited youth through both service agencies and street outreach. The findings revealed that approximately one third of the sample had some experience with trading sex, whether it was in the form of having traded sex, having been propositioned to trade sex but having refused, or having friends or acquaintances that had traded sex. Young people ‘s reports indicated that they had traded sex for things they deemed …

A micro perspective is then undertaken pertaining to the Technological University Dubin describing how quality assurance systems and procedures emerged in the Institute. It also includes the Institute’s response to provisions made in the 1999 Qualifications (Education and Training) Act with reference to the necessity of carrying out quality reviews. …

The Quality Movement Discourse In The Higher Education Sector: A General Review, Aidan Kenny

Articles

This paper – the first of a series of three – describes some of the macro milestones in the evolution of the Quality Movement in the industrial environment. The emphasis then shifts to reviewing the discourse relating to quality in the higher education sector in the UK. Attention is given to Quality Assessment, Quality Assurance and Quality Enhancement models. The interface or tension lines between quality as a controlling mechanism or as a tool for development are outlined. Predominant concerns and issues as expressed by academics are clustered into macro questions, the answers to which will require further longitudinal research.

Economic, Environmental And Social Performance Of The Irish Tourism Sector: Towards Sustainability, Kevin Griffin, John Carty

Conference papers

Ireland is promoted a clean, green tourism destination, famous for it’s landscape, environment, natural habitats and biodiversity. However, is this image still realistic and is it an image that can be sustained as Ireland develops post 2006? This question is examined through the course of this paper and relevant tourism policies are drawn on to illustrate this issue further.

Over the past decade, Irish tourism has performed quite well and has made a strong contribution to the national economy[1]. An efficient government sector, a competitive air and maritime transport sector, a strong partnership between public and private sector, …

Introductory chapters explain the recent increased interest in orthography, define terms, introduce pertinent literature, and give an overview of writing system typology. Remaining chapters present linguistic and non-linguistic factors which influence orthography decisions, examine writing system adaptation options, discuss orthography testing, consider motivations …

The Study Of Selected Twentieth-Century American Piano Compositions Appropriate For Use With Freshman And Sophomore College Piano Majors: Performance And Pedagogical Suggestions, Li-Jung Lee

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Studying and performing twentieth-century compositions are important for piano students to become well-rounded musicians. This study presents a performance analysis of repertoire from three highly influential American composers: Four Piano Blues (1926-1948) by Aaron Copland, Excursions Op. 20 (1944) by Samuel Barber and Suite de Danzas Criollas Op. 15 (1946) by Alberto Ginastera. Although these works are not the most technically demanding works by these composers, the nationalistic character of the Argentine and American folk melodies and dances; the popular styles of ragtime, blues and jazz; as well as their incorporation into twentieth-century compositional technique will challenge students in their …

Social Capital: Lessons From A Service-Learning Program, Maria J. D'Agostino Aug 2006

Social Capital: Lessons From A Service-Learning Program, Maria J. D'Agostino

Publications and Research

In an increasingly complex society, public administrators continue to pursue their ultimate goal of maintaining a democratic society. Confronted with decreasing civic engagement and social capital, universities are being sought as partners in the movement to address our faltering democracy. University based service-learning programs provide an opportunity to address our faltering democracy, while addressing the University mission of service to the community. Empirical research, using CASE, the Rutgers University service-learning program, was conducted to further explore the possibility (D’Agostino 2006).
