Factors Affecting Income Among Men And Women Psychologists, John Christian Aug 2006

Factors Affecting Income Among Men And Women Psychologists, John Christian

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Income differences between men and women psychologists in independent practice have long been noted. Some have suggested that the differences result from the traditional gender roles in household responsibilities and/or gender differences in career decisions have resulted in men and women pursuing different career paths and making different practice decisions that lead to differing incomes. Others explanations regarding income differences suggest that men work more, charge more, and adapt more efficient practice models that reduce overhead. However, no studies have investigated these hypotheses in relation to the practice patterns of independent practitioners. The current study investigated several hypotheses about factors …

Of Snakes And Butterflies: A Reply, Cass R. Sunstein Aug 2006

Of Snakes And Butterflies: A Reply, Cass R. Sunstein

Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers

This brief essay, a reply to a forthcoming essay by Radicals in Robes by Saikrishna Prakash in the Columbia Law Review, makes two points. The first is that the abstract idea of interpretation cannot support originalism or indeed any judgment about the competing (reasonable) approaches to the Constitution. Any such judgment must be defended on pragmatic grounds, which means that it must be attentive to consequences. The second point is that the consequentialist judgments that support minimalism also suggest that there are times and places in which minimalism is rightly abandoned. For example, broad rulings may well be justified when …

The Sociality Of Cultural Industries: Hong Kong's Cultural Policy And Film Industry, Lily Kong Aug 2006

The Sociality Of Cultural Industries: Hong Kong's Cultural Policy And Film Industry, Lily Kong

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

In this article, I explore the sociality of cultural industries by analyzing the film industry in Hong Kong. In particular, the social networks and relationships at multiple scales – across national boundaries, within local settings and on production sets – are examined, revealing their critical role in contributing to the health of the film industry. The risks faced at various steps of the production, marketing and distribution process are ameliorated by trust relations, built up through time between social actors in spontaneous ways. While Hong Kong cultural policy in part seeks to create the social and spatial contexts within which …

The Political Economy Of Poverty Reduction: A Comparative Study Of Two Chinese Provinces, John A. Donaldson Aug 2006

The Political Economy Of Poverty Reduction: A Comparative Study Of Two Chinese Provinces, John A. Donaldson

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Is growth good for the poor? In theory, yes. As one influential report on China’s “War on Poverty” suggested, ”Obviously robust economic growth helps reduce poverty, as long as the gains are reasonably distributed” (Rozelle et al. 2000). In practice as well, growth is often a crucial ingredient in the poverty reduction recipe. While this relationship is well founded, important exceptions present themselves – some areas grow, but poverty persists; the economies of other areas remain apparently stagnant, yet poverty diminishes. These exceptions, if studied, will not only illuminate further the causal relationship between these two concepts, but also provide …

Then The Burning Began: Omaha, Riots, And The Growth Of Black Radicalism, 1966-1969, Ashley M. Howard Aug 2006

Then The Burning Began: Omaha, Riots, And The Growth Of Black Radicalism, 1966-1969, Ashley M. Howard

Student Work

Throughout the 1960s, America witnessed one metropolis after another suffer from major civil disturbances. The first of these incidents occurred in Selma, Alabama, but it was not until Watts, California exploded that the nation began to take notice. As America was throttling towards a major race war, nobody anticipated the Midwestern town of 'Omaha, Nebraska to experience the same disturbances larger cities had. Although the life of average Omaha blacks was better than that of many of their urban counterparts, black Omahans still faced frequent job discrimination, lack of adequate educational facilities, and general disenchantment with Northern ghetto life. Between …

Ireland: The Recurring Economic Miracle?, Mary Joy Crisafulli Aug 2006

Ireland: The Recurring Economic Miracle?, Mary Joy Crisafulli

Honors College Theses

Ireland is enjoying a tremendous economic success. Is this success based solely on favorable corporate taxation policies? What is the effect of Ireland's success and its taxation policies on the other EU nations? Ireland presents a model for economic growth and prosperity to be followed not only by the recent accession nations, but by the older EU member nations in an attempt to reform their socioeconomic context.

Labeling And Deviance: Fraternities And Gangs, Cristina Masiello Aug 2006

Labeling And Deviance: Fraternities And Gangs, Cristina Masiello

Honors College Theses

Labeling has a large effect on individuals and how they are viewed by society and how they view themselves. Who makes the rules about gang members? What is a gang and what do they represent? Fraternities and street gangs have more similarities than most would imagine. Both take part in illegal activities, however, only one group is criminalized for it. Society labels certain individuals as deviants or gang members and potentially can cause systematic violence. Those with privilege are treated differently and excuses are made for them, leading them to believe that status can excuse anything.

The Effect Of Parenting Styles In Adolescent Delinquency: Exploring The Interactions Between Race, Class, And Gender, Yaschica Williams Aug 2006

The Effect Of Parenting Styles In Adolescent Delinquency: Exploring The Interactions Between Race, Class, And Gender, Yaschica Williams

Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to examine how parenting style interacts with other variables related to characteristics of the child (i.e., race/ethnicity, class and gender) in producing delinquency. This research integrates the traditions of criminology and psychology by incorporating the research of two researchers renowned in their respective fields of study, Travis Hirschi from criminology and Diana Baumrind from psychology.

The National Longitudinal Survey of Youth, 1997 (NLSY97) is used in this study to test hypotheses derived from Hirschi's (1969) social bond theory and Baumrind's (1966) parenting typology. These hypotheses examine the effects of family process variables and parenting …

Examining The Structural Covariates Of Methamphetamine Use: A Social Disorganization Perspective, Justin Smith Aug 2006

Examining The Structural Covariates Of Methamphetamine Use: A Social Disorganization Perspective, Justin Smith

Masters Theses

There have been many anecdotal accounts describing the characteristics of individuals involved in methamphetamine use, trafficking and production. However, prior to the current study there was yet to be a macro-level analysis of methamphetamine use. The extant macro-level literature on drug use has suggested that areas with high levels of social disorganization experience high rates of drug use. It was expected that school-districts with low SES and high rates of ethnic heterogeneity, residential instability and family disruption will experience high rates of methamphetamine use. In addition, it was expected that rural school districts would show higher rates than urban and …

The Impact Of A One-Half Day Environmental Education Program On Elementary Students, David C. Pagel Aug 2006

The Impact Of A One-Half Day Environmental Education Program On Elementary Students, David C. Pagel

Masters Theses

The hypothesis of this research is that elementary students benefit from the Kalamazoo Nature Center's (KNC) one-half day inquiry program, based upon data collected using a Likert scale instrument. The earth science inquiry program at KNC is intended to enhance student attitude about the natural environment. There are two primary components to the research. First, data were collected through a pre-/post-survey from elementary students who participated in the Kalamazoo Nature Center's one half-day environmental education program. The survey was based on the Test of Science Related Attitudes (Fraser, 1981). Second, data were analyzed to assess student attitudes and beliefs before …

The Protective Order Process As A Victim Empowering Response To Domestic Violence: An Investigation In A Rural Iowa Setting, Traci L. Ketter Aug 2006

The Protective Order Process As A Victim Empowering Response To Domestic Violence: An Investigation In A Rural Iowa Setting, Traci L. Ketter

Masters Theses

This research began its evolution as i began with an interest in societal responses to domestic violence. I was curious about protective orders, as they seem to be relied upon heavily by our legal system. As one of the primary responses to domestic violence, I wanted to know whether this type of response was meeting the needs of petitioners. As I read the literature and formed research questions, it became clear that in order to answer the questions I had, I would need to go to the victims themselves. They would be the best source of information on the role …

Democracy, Hegemony, And Consent: A Critical Ideological Analysis Of Mass Mediated Language, Michael Alan Glassco Aug 2006

Democracy, Hegemony, And Consent: A Critical Ideological Analysis Of Mass Mediated Language, Michael Alan Glassco

Masters Theses

Accepting and incorporating mediated political discourse into our everyday lives without conscious attention to the language used perpetuates the underlying ideological assumptions of power guiding such discourse. The consequences of such overreaching power are manifest in the public sphere as a hegemonic system in which free market capitalism is portrayed as democratic and necessary to serve the needs of the public. This thesis focuses specifically on two versions of the Society of Professional Journalist Codes of Ethics 1987 and 1996, thought to influence the output of news organizations. This analysis exposes the problems inherent in the news media's focus of …

From Aspac To Eas : South Korea And The Asian Pacific Region, Brian Bridges Aug 2006

From Aspac To Eas : South Korea And The Asian Pacific Region, Brian Bridges

CAPS Working Paper Series

South Korea’s diplomatic and security focus has inevitably been on North-east Asia and its difficult relationship with its northern neighbour, but South Korea also has a role to play in the broader Asian Pacific region. This paper analyses South Korea’s increasing economic, political and cultural links with the region and its role in the development of Asian Pacific regionalism. Utilising the concept of ‘middle power’, it argues that, while clearly South Korea cannot ignore what is happening in its immediate geographical environment, it does have the economic and political resources to enable it to take advantage of the opportunities for …

Power Structure And Recent Political Development In Korea, Seok Choon Lew Aug 2006

Power Structure And Recent Political Development In Korea, Seok Choon Lew

CAPS Working Paper Series

Democratic government is still comparatively young in South Korea. This paper outlines the development of the constitutional and political structures since 1948, noting in particular the complex history of political parties, which are often closely tied to prominent politicians. The paper then reviews the current political situation under the Roh Moo Hyun administration and examines the broad array of presidential candidates hoping to succeed him. Crucial to an understanding of modern Korean politics has been the conflict between the industrialization generation and the democratization generation, which is still relevant today.

Interrogating History Or Making History? Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse-Five, Delillo's Libra, And The Shaping Of Collective Memory, Mark Spencer Mills Aug 2006

Interrogating History Or Making History? Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse-Five, Delillo's Libra, And The Shaping Of Collective Memory, Mark Spencer Mills

Theses and Dissertations

In the wake of the post-structuralist skepticism of language and language's ability to represent reality, the philosophy of history has likewise been questioned, since we gain our knowledge and understanding of the past primarily through language—through written and spoken testimony, and through subsequent historiography. Various post-structuralist critics have pointed out that history is never entirely recoverable, but accessible only indirectly through what is written and documented about it. What is written and documented is in turn determined by the contents and the nature of the archive. What we know about history is largely mediated and limited by the problems inherent …

Understanding The Psychosocial Development Of Neighborhoods: Implications For Situational Policing, Jeri Kirby Aug 2006

Understanding The Psychosocial Development Of Neighborhoods: Implications For Situational Policing, Jeri Kirby

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Community policing strategies are aimed at reducing crime and getting neighbors more involved. These goals of achieving safe neighborhoods seem just outside of the police department's reach. The police have been unable to achieve sustained satisfaction with the residents while also deterring crime and disorder. Research has suggested that collective efficacy within neighborhoods has a strong relation to the level of crime and disorder (Sampson, 1999). Assuming that neighborhoods have unique properties/characteristics, other researchers explored the idea that neighborhoods behave like groups and develop through identifiable stages (Nolan, 2004). Using qualitative methods inside the Pittsburgh Police Department and in four …

Social Network Dynamics For Open Source Software Projects, Y. Long, Keng Siau Aug 2006

Social Network Dynamics For Open Source Software Projects, Y. Long, Keng Siau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Drawing on social network theories and previous studies, this research is an initial effort to explore the dynamics of the social network structure in Open Source Software (OSS) teams. Three projects were selected from SourceForge.net in term of their similarities as well as their differences. Monthly data were extracted from the bug tracking system in order to achieve a longitudinal view of the interaction pattern of each project. Social network analysis was used to generate the indices of network structure. The finding suggests that the interaction pattern of OSS projects evolves from a single hub at the beginning to a …

Preparing Extension Professionals: The Ohio State University's Model Of Extension Education, Scott D. Scheer, Theresa M. Ferrari, Garee W. Earnest, James J. Connors

Journal of Extension

Extension systems throughout the United States require individuals to have college degrees to work as Extension professionals. This article shares The Ohio State University's approach to Extension Education in the Department of Human and Community Resource Development. A model is presented for preparing Extension professionals in an academic setting. Based on the research literature, competencies for success in Extension are matched with courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels of instruction. By sharing our approach, we hope to encourage dialogue and discussion that will help us and other academic programs to offer the best possible curriculum for preparing Extension educators.

Penn State Cooperative Extension Dairy and Livestock Nutrient and Environmental Education Days (NEEDs) is a multi-disciplinary collaborative educational program for government conservation professionals working with producers. The objective of this program is to provide participants with an understanding of the links among community concerns, agricultural air and water quality impacts, changing policy, and farm-level environmental management tools. This article describes the development of the NEEDs program, evaluation results, and future program plans. As Extension's role evolves to address the educational needs of conservation professionals, evaluation results indicate the use of a multi-disciplinary approach can serve as an effective educational method.

Building Trust In Local Community Organizations: Where Do We Start, And How Can We Make A Difference?, James Barnes, Sheila Haynes Aug 2006

Building Trust In Local Community Organizations: Where Do We Start, And How Can We Make A Difference?, James Barnes, Sheila Haynes

Journal of Extension

Trust is the glue that binds organizations and communities together. Building trust in local community organizations has been identified as a viable strategy for the economic development of organizations, communities, and regions. In this article, we identify how Extension professionals can begin working with local boards (of any type) to promote the building of trust among members. We develop the board member accountability and expectations (BMAE) tool, which can be used to more clearly identify new board member expectations. More clearly identifying board member expectations is one of many steps that local boards should take to build trust among members.

Media Representation And Portrayal Of African-American Athletes, Justin Zackal Aug 2006

Media Representation And Portrayal Of African-American Athletes, Justin Zackal

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The racial composition of athletes competing at major colleges and in professional sports in America is disproportioned to the general population and journalists that cover their sports. With African-Americans accounting for such a large contingent of athletes, how their race is perceived by society is often predicated on the coverage they receive. The purpose of this study is to look at the importance of media coverage of African-American athletes, and to show if White media scrutinize African-American athletes more than they do White athletes. The misrepresentation of African-American athletes in the press box could mean an unequal playing field in …

"What's Your Fantasy?" The Sexual Objectification Of Women In Rap Videos, Dorothy E. Blue Aug 2006

"What's Your Fantasy?" The Sexual Objectification Of Women In Rap Videos, Dorothy E. Blue

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

For many African American youth, hip hop has been a part of their cultural identity since the 1970s (George 1998; Rose 1994). From its inception three decades ago, hip hop has grown from an urban (predominantly black and Latino youth) culture into an international youth phenomenon, transcending racial and ethnic lines. Prior research indicates that male artists tend to rule the video world. Furthermore, the portrayal of women in these videos produces an acceptance of violence and sexual objectification toward women. The purpose of this study is to look at the sexual objectification of women in rap videos. This study …

Current Status Of Child Sexual Abuse In Chattanooga, Tn As Reflected In Treatment And Legal Systems: A View From The Experts, Julie F. Joy

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Child sexual abuse, a horrific and damaging crime against the most vulnerable of human beings, is decried by major religions and cultures around the world. And yet, it is flourishing today in various forms within every major society. Empirical research has been conducted in the areas of treatment and legal issues for victims of child sexual abuse. This research indicates a dichotomy of advocates in treatment systems and skeptics in legal systems that could conflict with each other in providing treatment and justice to abuse victims. This study offers a view of the status of child sexual abuse in one …

Examination Of The Relationship Between Nonresponse And Measurement Error In A Validation Study Of Alumni, Kristen Olson, Courtney Kennedy Aug 2006

Examination Of The Relationship Between Nonresponse And Measurement Error In A Validation Study Of Alumni, Kristen Olson, Courtney Kennedy

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

While the individual components of total survey error have been well documented in the literature, relatively little is known about the intersection of these error sources. In particular, there is scant empirical work on the interplay between nonresponse error and measurement error – despite the potentially significant implications for data quality as well as techniques used to recruit respondents. In this paper we investigate the connection between these two error sources using data from a survey of University of Maryland alumni. The availability of administrative records for seven items on the survey instrument (donations, membership in the alumni association, and …

Knowledges Of The Creative Economy: Towards A Relational Geography Of Diffusion And Adaptation In Asia, Lily Kong, Chris Gibson, Louisa-May Khoo, Anne-Louise Semple Aug 2006

Knowledges Of The Creative Economy: Towards A Relational Geography Of Diffusion And Adaptation In Asia, Lily Kong, Chris Gibson, Louisa-May Khoo, Anne-Louise Semple

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Recent dialogues in geography and the social sciences have reminded researchers of the extent to which academic and policy knowledges are socially and spatially embedded-that is, they circulate through formal and informal systems of publishing, exchange, commodification and cultural influence. Academic and policy knowledges are, in short, very much a part of the creative economy. In light of this, our paper surveys knowledges of the creative economy itself, as reflected in a geography of industry reports and government policy statements in selected Asian countries. Using a post-positivist framework adapted from diffusion theory, we critically interpret the circulation, mutation and adaptation …
