Food Insecurity And Hunger In America, Elizabeth Zufelt

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Studies have shown that about twelve percent (13.5 million) of American households experience at least some form of food insecurity in one year. Causes for food insecurity include disability, low income if employed, unemployment within the past six months, and retirement. Hunger and obesity are often seen in the same person at the same time, including children. The effects of hunger and food insecurity seen among children include: anemia, higher levels of anxiety, poorer performance on mathematical tests, depression, aggression, tardiness, a poorer sense of well-being, lower physical abilities, and lower psychosocial abilities. Food insecurity also affects the elderly population. …

Nutrition In Traumatic Brain Injuries, Jaylene Dalley May 2006

Nutrition In Traumatic Brain Injuries, Jaylene Dalley

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Nutrition intervention and support is a critical part of caring for traumatic brain injury (TBI) patients. TBI patients have high energy and protein needs, as well as increased needs for some vitamins and minerals. There are a number of ways to assess energy and protein needs for TBI patients including indirect calorimetry, the Harrris-Benedict Equations and the Glasgow Coma Scale Equation. Most TBI patients are either non-responsive (comatose) or develop some form of dysphagia and, therefore, are unable to consume adequate amounts of nutrition via the oral route. Nutrition support through enteral or parenteral routes may improve the medical outcome …

Gender Differences In Emotion Regulation, Kristiane Madsen May 2006

Gender Differences In Emotion Regulation, Kristiane Madsen

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Emotion regulation is conceptualized as the ability to identify and respond appropriately to emotions. Previous research on gender and emotional expression suggests that female children are socially conditioned to be more expressive, and thus may be more able to regulate emotion with their mothers in relation to their male peers. Participants include 144 mother-child pairs at child age points 14, 24, and 36 months and at Pre-Kindergarten entry who participated in a local Early Head Start Research and Evaluation project. Data consist of videotaped interactions of mothers and infants engaged in a 10 minute free play activity with three bags …

Characteristics Of Human Figure Drawings Created By Students With Learning Disabilities, Monika L. Isip May 2006

Characteristics Of Human Figure Drawings Created By Students With Learning Disabilities, Monika L. Isip

EVMS School of Health Professions Theses & Dissertations

Previous research concerning the artistic indicators of learning disabilities has yielded inconsistent results. Children with learning disabilities comprise a heterogeneous population, with diverse strengths and challenges. There has been a lack of research on the graphic indicators of learning disabilities, which takes this diversity into account. This study aimed at exploring the characteristics of Human Figure Drawings (HFDs) created by students with learning disabilities.

The study examined the HFDs of 2 Virginia Beach Public School 2nd graders who were identified by their parents as having learning disabilities; one child’s disability was described as being a decoding deficit and the other …

Professional Outcomes Of Eastern Virginia Medical School Art Therapy Graduates, Heather Tyng

EVMS School of Health Professions Theses & Dissertations

In 1982, Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS) awarded the first art therapy graduate with a Master’s Degree. Since then there have been 202 graduates through 2004.

The EVMS art therapy program has had no detailed or current information regarding the professional outcomes of its alumni. This lack of information created a need to survey EVMS art therapy graduates to determine how their careers have progressed to this point.

A survey was designed to investigate the professional outcomes of the EVMS art therapy alumni and to determine their opinions of the strengths and weaknesses of the EVMS art therapy curriculum. Of …

Portland State Magazine, Portland State University. Office Of University Communications

Portland State Magazine

PSU’s alumni magazine, published 2-3 times a year. In this issue: Portland State’s campaign to raise $100 million is exceeding its goal and establishing new prominence in scholarship, research, and teaching; enthusiastic engineering students are up for the challenge of high-altitude balloons; this professor puts his money in something that makes mathematical sense: poker; for two June graduates and two Vanport alumni, the university provides vastly different experiences; abuse of foreign maids in Asia and the Middle East caught Patrick Augustine’s attention—enough to make him do something about it; and more.

The Gender Gap In Post-Secondary Study Abroad: Understanding And Marketing To Male Students, Steven W. Shirley May 2006

The Gender Gap In Post-Secondary Study Abroad: Understanding And Marketing To Male Students, Steven W. Shirley

Theses and Dissertations

Given the post-September 11,2001, environment, a renewed focus has been on broadening the global perspective of American university students. During the past 20 years, the participation rate of American college and university students studying abroad has grown tremendously. International education has experienced much growth and increased attention; yet, despite the interest, enrollment in these programs has consistently been primarily by females with only limited participation by male students. Study abroad professionals have speculated about this gender gap, yet very little research has been completed to understand the disparity. This study examined differences in how males and females perceive studying abroad …

Linking The Undergraduate Degree To The Graduate Degree: Core Curriculum Issues, Karen F. Steckol, Marc A. Fagelson, Dan C. Tullos

ETSU Faculty Works

There are many issues that relate to the efficacy of the undergraduate degree in the field of communicative disorders. Some have advocated for the elimination of the degree while others vigorously fight to maintain it. Some believe that there should be clinic associated with the undergraduate degree while others argue to have the degree but without clinic. Some state departments of education allow persons with an undergraduate degree in communicative disorders to practice in the schools, others do not. Colleges and universities are afraid that without an undergraduate degree program, their departments will be seen as vulnerable to elimination in …

College Recruiter Behaviors That Influence International Students' Decision To Attend Augsburg College, Marissa Machado Apr 2006

College Recruiter Behaviors That Influence International Students' Decision To Attend Augsburg College, Marissa Machado

Theses and Graduate Projects

This study will investigate the role of the admissions counselor in influencing an international student to attend Augsburg College. Previous research has indicated that factors such as a student's knowledge of a host country, perceived quality of education, and scholarship awards are determining factors in the college selection process, but very little research has examined what role the international recruiter plays in this process. The number of academic institutions which international students can choose from are varied and numerous, making the role of the international recruiter key in the recruitment process. This research indicates that the admissions counselor can play …
