Ranking Law Schools: Using Ssrn To Measure Scholarly Performance, Bernard S. Black, Paul L. Caron Jan 2006

Ranking Law Schools: Using Ssrn To Measure Scholarly Performance, Bernard S. Black, Paul L. Caron

Indiana Law Journal

There are several methods for ranking the scholarly performance of law faculties, including reputation surveys (U.S. News, Leiter); publication counts (Lindgren and Seltzer, Leiter); and citation counts (Eisenberg and Wells, Leiter). Each offers a useful but partial picture offaculty performance. We explore here whether the new "beta" SSRN-based measures (number of downloads and number ofposted papers) can offer a different, also useful, albeit also partial, picture. Our modest claim is that SSRNbased measures can address some of the deficiencies in these other measures and thus play a valuable role in the rankings tapestry. For example, SSRN offers real-time data covering …

Virtuous Leadership: A Theoretical Model And Research Agenda, Craig L. Pearce, David A. Waldman, Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi Jan 2006

Virtuous Leadership: A Theoretical Model And Research Agenda, Craig L. Pearce, David A. Waldman, Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi

Department of Management: Faculty Publications

In this manuscript we attempt to shed light on the concept of virtuous leadership. We first attempt to identify the nature of virtuous leadership. Next, we specify two potential antecedents of virtuous vertical leadership. Specifically, we identify the personal characteristic of responsibility disposition as well as environmental cues as potential predictors of subsequent virtuous leadership. Moreover. we articulate how virtuous vertical leadership might result in virtuous shared leadership. We also demonstrate how both vertical and shared virtuous leadership can act as key factors in the creation of organizational learning. Importantly. we specify several important research implications of our theoretical model. …

How Children’S Lawyers Serve State Interests, Martin Guggenheim Jan 2006

How Children’S Lawyers Serve State Interests, Martin Guggenheim

Faculty Articles

I am pleased to be a part of this conference and to have this opportunity to expand my focus of concern over providing children with lawyers from the details of the role of lawyers to a consideration of the costs associated with providing them. This article is limited to the subject of representing children in child welfare cases. In this article, I will recount the history of child welfare practice in New York City. I do this because it is a history I know best, having practiced there since I graduated from law school in 1971. I also believe this …

Ignorance And Marital Bliss: Women's Education In The English Novel, 1796-1895, Mary Tobin Jan 2006

Ignorance And Marital Bliss: Women's Education In The English Novel, 1796-1895, Mary Tobin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Mary Hays's Memoirs of Emma Courtney (1796) and Mary Wollstonecraft's Maria, or The Wrongs of Woman (1798) demonstrate the futility of educating women, given Britain's law of coverture; they expose the impracticality of ideal women presented in Jean Jacques Rousseau's Émile (1762) and James Fordyce's Sermons to Young Women (1766); and they demand educational parity between the sexes. Although novelists throughout the nineteenth century revisit and reshape all four authors' ideas, by 1895 in Jude the Obscure, when Sue Bridehead fails to achieve sexual equality despite enjoying educational parity, Thomas Hardy concludes that educating women remains futile.

This cycle begins …

School Administrators' Perceptions Of The Cacrep School Counseling Standards, Sandra M. Frey-Mckeown Jan 2006

School Administrators' Perceptions Of The Cacrep School Counseling Standards, Sandra M. Frey-Mckeown

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

School administrators have broad influence on the selection and role of school counselors. However, administrators' training programs give them little, if any, understanding of the standards (CACREP) to which school counselors are trained and, perhaps more importantly, no information about the school counselors' role as defined by the counseling profession (Ballard and Murgatroyd, 1999; Borders and Drury, 1992; Fitch et al., 2001; Louis et al., 2001; Ponec and Brock, 2000) The purpose of this study was to describe how school administrators view the importance and use of the CACREP School Counseling Standards when hiring school counselors. Questionnaires were mailed to …

Does Caring Matter?: A Qualitative Study Of Urban African American Alternative School Students Perceptions Of Their School Experiences, Past And Present, Victoria Berger Jan 2006

Does Caring Matter?: A Qualitative Study Of Urban African American Alternative School Students Perceptions Of Their School Experiences, Past And Present, Victoria Berger

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A cultural mismatch among African American school students and their teachers, due to diverse values, norms, and expectations, often provokes inappropriate teacher response to student conduct, thereby inciting disruptive student behavior. The management of this diversity when the environment is devoid of a teacher's sensitivity to the student's life can impact students' behavior, and ultimately, initiate an alternative school referral. This study examines such student-teacher interactions through the lens provided by the analogous dynamics of iatrogenic harm, wherein an intervention by a medical or other specialist results in additional impairment or disease. This study intends to reveal, through the voice …

A Comparison Of Quality Of Life In Adult Patients With Heart Failure In Two Medical Settings: A Heart Failure Clinic And A Physician Practice, Janet Bischof Jan 2006

A Comparison Of Quality Of Life In Adult Patients With Heart Failure In Two Medical Settings: A Heart Failure Clinic And A Physician Practice, Janet Bischof

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Heart Failure (HF), a major chronic disease that affects 4.8 million Americans, traditionally is medically managed by a primary care physician, with acute treatment at hospital emergency rooms often followed by inpatient admission. Ongoing support (prevention, diagnosis, treatment, intervention, symptom management, and end of life care), education, and intervention over the continuum are important to manage HF. The Modeling Role Modeling theory (Erickson, Tomlin, and Swain), is the study's conceptual framework. When an individual knows about their illness, they mobilize internal/external resources to gain, maintain, or promote equilibrium. These resources affect daily activities. The purpose of this descriptive study is …

The Impact Of In-Service Training On Burnout At The Institute Of Public Administration, Maghram M. Al-Amri Jan 2006

The Impact Of In-Service Training On Burnout At The Institute Of Public Administration, Maghram M. Al-Amri

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

This study was conducted to assess the effects of training on burnout and job satisfaction by conducting pre- and post-tests of participants in various training programs provided by the Institute for Public Administration (IPA). This study used a Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) modified survey. The results suggested that the burnout levels among trainees after the professional in-service training program were not significantly different from the burnout level before the professional in-service training. At the organizational level, the findings supported a relationship between burnout and promotion, departmental and organizational tenure, age, and changing jobs and organizations. This study provided some valuable …

Testing For Cointegrating Rank Via Model Selection: Evidence From 165 Data Sets, Badi H. Baltagi, Zijun Wang Jan 2006

Testing For Cointegrating Rank Via Model Selection: Evidence From 165 Data Sets, Badi H. Baltagi, Zijun Wang

Center for Policy Research

The model selection approach has been proposed as an alternative to the popular tests for cointegration such as the residual-based ADF test and the system-based trace test. Using information criteria, we conduct cointegration tests on 165 data sets used in published studies. The empirical results demonstrate the usefulness of the model selection approach for applied researchers.

Inter-Industry Gender Wage Gaps By Knowledge Intensity: Discrimination And Technology In Korea, William C. Horrace, Beyza P. Ural, Jin Hwa Jung Jan 2006

Inter-Industry Gender Wage Gaps By Knowledge Intensity: Discrimination And Technology In Korea, William C. Horrace, Beyza P. Ural, Jin Hwa Jung

Center for Policy Research

A new gender wage gap decomposition methodology is introduced that does not suffer from the identification problem caused by unobserved non-discriminatory wage structure. The methodology is used to measure the relative size of Korean gender wage gaps from 1994 to 2000 across industries, differentiated by industrial knowledge intensity, where knowledge intensity is the extent to which industries produce or employ high-technology products. Korea represents an important case study, since it possesses one of the fast growing knowledge-intensive economies, among industrialized countries. Empirical results indicate that over this period, discrimination (the unexplained portion of the gender wage gaps) in Korea was …

Videotaping Investigative Interviews Of Children In Cases Of Child Sexual Abuse: One Community's Approach, Frank E. Vandervort Jan 2006

Videotaping Investigative Interviews Of Children In Cases Of Child Sexual Abuse: One Community's Approach, Frank E. Vandervort

Articles

Legal scholars have long debated the efficacy and necessity of videotaping investigative interviews with children when allegations of child sexual abuse have surfaced. This debate has been advanced from the perspectives of adversaries in the criminal justice system, prosecutors and defense advocates. Absent from this debate has been the perspective of the broader community. This debate has failed to consider how other investigative tools might be used in conjunction with videotaping to advance the interests of the community. Moreover, the debate about videotaping has taken place with little actual data. This Article seeks to accomplish two goals. First, it seeks …

Social Impact: Productive Aging: Tapping Into Energy Of Older Americans, Janet Edwards Jan 2006

Social Impact: Productive Aging: Tapping Into Energy Of Older Americans, Janet Edwards

Social Impact Publication

Welcome to the new era of "Productive Aging." As the first wave of baby boomers turns 60 this year, the typical retirement scenario of softening 60-somethings retreating into a vacation-like vacuum is passé. Healthier, wealthier, and better educated, this new generation of older adults seeks—perhaps “demands” — ongoing productive roles in mainstream society.

Social Impact: The Globalization Of Social Work: How Flat Are We?, Rick Skwiot

Social Impact Publication

In this book, the World is Flat, New York Times columnist Thomas L. Friedman posits that a global technological revolution has increased economic opportunities and create a world that is more connected than ever before. But does a flatter economic world equal a more just world? Are the benefits resulting from greater connectivity distributed in a way that everyone can share in newfound prosperity? The answer is an unequivocal no.
