Weekly Problems Scales: Instruments For Sexually Abused Youth And Their Nonoffending Parents In Treatment, Genelle K. Sawyer, Eugenia Hsu Tsao, David J. Hansen, Mary Fran Flood

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

This study’s purpose was to determine if efficient measures could be created to assess multiple problematic behaviors identified in youth who were sexually abused and in treatment. Because of the lack of easily administered brief instruments that assess multiple domains of interest in this population, complementary parent and child assessment measures were developed. The Weekly Problems Scale–Child Version (WPSC) and the Weekly Problems Scale–Parent Version (WPS-P) were created to monitor the weekly progress of the child and family in treatment and focus specifically on common areas of difficulties in this population. Exploratory factor analysis was conducted to assist in identifying …

Alternative Education Programs: Program And Student Characteristics, Regina M. Foley, Lang-Sze Pang Feb 2006

Alternative Education Programs: Program And Student Characteristics, Regina M. Foley, Lang-Sze Pang

Special Topics, General

Alternative education programs are often viewed as individualized opportunities designed to meet the educational needs for youth identified as at-risk for school failure. Increasingly, these programs have been identified as programs for disruptive youth who have been referred from traditional schools. The purpose of this study was to examine the characteristics of the administrative structures and physical facilities of alternative education programs and to describe the student population and educational services being offered to youth attending such programs. The findings suggest programs appear to be largely site-based programs, often operating in physical facilities with limited access to academic suppm1s. The …

Models Of American Indian Education: Cultural Inclusion And The Family/Community/School Linkage, Adrienne Freng, Scott Freng, Helen A. Moore Feb 2006

Models Of American Indian Education: Cultural Inclusion And The Family/Community/School Linkage, Adrienne Freng, Scott Freng, Helen A. Moore

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Educational research has explored the impact of culture and the linkage of families and communities to schools on student achievement among minority students. Little focus, however, has been placed on the family/community interactions with schools among culturally distinctive populations such as American Indians and students' perceptions of the educational process. This exploratory research examined the state of education from the perspective of American Indian young adults from various tribes in Nebraska. Instead of focusing on educational achievement, the emphasis of most educational research relating to American Indians, this study explored the model of education in existence. Additionally, researchers explored the …

Community Collaboration: Effective Partnerships With Steering Committees, Mary Banach, Sharyn Zunz, Nicole Lapointe Feb 2006

Community Collaboration: Effective Partnerships With Steering Committees, Mary Banach, Sharyn Zunz, Nicole Lapointe

Journal of Extension

This article reports the findings of a study examining the development, use, and effectiveness of community-based steering committees at three different rural sites. Each site developed projects administered by local Extension Educators aimed at benefiting at-risk youth and families. The effectiveness of the steering committees was evaluated by whether conditions were cultivated that would lead to program sustainability. Factors examined at each site included: availability and deployment of resources; steering committee composition; and leadership\ownership of the project. The article details the results of the study and suggests some implications for the development of community partnerships.

Journey To Successful Collaborations, Linda Strieter, Lydia B. Blalock Feb 2006

Journey To Successful Collaborations, Linda Strieter, Lydia B. Blalock

Journal of Extension

Due to ongoing budgetary restraints, reduced staffing, and other challenges to continued program growth, Extension personnel must understand how to bring together the resources needed for successful programming and sustainability. The most effective way to accomplish this is through collaboration. Unfortunately, ". . . little is written describing how to approach the developmental process [italics added] of collaboration" (Gardner, 2005). This article provides readers with an easy to understand, step-by-step guide for navigating the road to successful collaborations.
