The Role Of Caregivers In The Management Of Alzheimer’S Disease : Examples From Asian Countries, Joydeep D. Chaudhuri, Srijit Das

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

The demographic profile of the Asian population is rapidly changing, with a fast increasing ageing population, owing to an increase in longevity and a decreasing birth rate. Moreover, due to improved medical facilities and the increased aged population, Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is fast emerging as a major health problem in many Asian countries. As curative treatment for AD is still elusive, care giving is an important component of the management of AD. While Western countries have recognised this issue, besides highly industrialized Japan, the Asian initiative has been relatively slow. This article aims to address issues involved in caregiving in …

Anterior-Posterior Thigh Diameter Measured By Two-Dimensional Sonography : Indicator Of Fetal Age At 18 To 28 Weeks Gestation ?, Saad Ri Al-Kubaisi

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

Objective: Little published research exists in the area of fetal thigh biometry, specifically in the use of the anteriorposterior fetal thigh diameter (APTD). A continuing review of existing practices needs to be coupled with evaluation of alternate or additional methodology. This study evaluated the usefulness and direct correlation of a simple, new method of predicting fetal age by measurement of the anterior-posterior thigh diameter (APTD) in a normal 18-to 28 week pregnancies using two-dimensional sonography. Methods: This was a quantitative prospective study of 55 patients in the High Level General Hospital, Alberta, Canada. Anterior-posterior thigh diameters (APTD) were sonographically measured …

Masking Material As A Form Of Food Storage In Tiarinia Cornigera And Micippa Platipes (Brachyura, Majidae), J. Kyomo Dec 2006

Masking Material As A Form Of Food Storage In Tiarinia Cornigera And Micippa Platipes (Brachyura, Majidae), J. Kyomo

Tanzania Journal of Science

Masking or decorating, which means attaching materials to the body, was investigated in two spider crabs Tiarinia cornigera and Micippa platipesin the subtropical waters of Okinawa, Japan. This life strategy was compared between sites over a period of time. All crabs of different ages and sizes attached materials, in one combination or the other, on their bodies proportionate to their carapace sizes. Older or larger crabs had their carapaces more completely covered with the materials than young or smaller crabs. Similar materials were found at all sites and had equal selective precedences by crabs. Red algae, particularly Gelidiella sp, was …

Coastal Tanzania, A New Home To The Living Coelacanth: An Oceanographic Analysis, N. Nyandwi Dec 2006

Coastal Tanzania, A New Home To The Living Coelacanth: An Oceanographic Analysis, N. Nyandwi

Tanzania Journal of Science

Coelacanth is no longer a new fish in Tanzania. After it was first discovered in September 2003 off Kilwa Masoko in southern Tanzania and with awareness campaigns, fishermen have reported further landings since, mostly in Tanga, northern Tanzania at Kigombe village. Analysis of habitat conditions suitable for the coelacanth indicates that the oceanography may just be right for the fish to have a permanent residence as opposed to the theory of drifters from a natural home elsewhere. At one time three specimens were captured together in the same net indicating that they formed a group. Oceanographic studies of the habitat …

Assessment Of The Status Of Lates Stappersii (Centropomidae) Stock In Lift-Net Fishery In Lake Tanganyika, Kigoma, Tanzania, I. A. Kimirei, Y. D. Mgaya Dec 2006

Assessment Of The Status Of Lates Stappersii (Centropomidae) Stock In Lift-Net Fishery In Lake Tanganyika, Kigoma, Tanzania, I. A. Kimirei, Y. D. Mgaya

Tanzania Journal of Science

An assessment of the status of Lates stappersii (Boulenger, 1914) stock in the lift-net fishery in Lake Tanganyika, Kigoma area, was carried out from January to December 2003. Results indicated that breeding is seasonal with peaks in February, July-August and December, and so was catch composition, with peaks in March, May and July–August that followed the abundance of its prey, Stolothrissa tanganicae. Catch per unit effort was similar between wet and dry seasons and peaked synchronously at all study sites probably as an indication of its abundance during those months; but also it could mean that the fishes were caught …

Replacing The Federal Income Tax With A Postpaid Consumption Tax: Preliminary Thoughts Regarding A Government Matching Program For Wealthy Investors And A New Tax Policy Lens, J. Clifton Fleming Jr. Dec 2006

Replacing The Federal Income Tax With A Postpaid Consumption Tax: Preliminary Thoughts Regarding A Government Matching Program For Wealthy Investors And A New Tax Policy Lens, J. Clifton Fleming Jr.

Faculty Scholarship

In recent years, proposals have been made to replace the federal income tax with a postpaid consumption tax - that is, a federal value added tax ("VAT"), a federal retail sales tax ("RST"), or a federal cash-flow (consumed income) tax. Because these taxes can be constructed so that they are indistinguishable at the level of the ultimate consumer in terms of their principal effects, and because a prominent recent proposal is the RST approach, I have written this article in terms of an RST/income tax comparison. The analysis, however, would be mostly the same if the income tax was compared …

Ecological And Engineering Importance Of The Bet El Ras Beach-Sandstone, N. Nyandwi, J. W. Kangwe Dec 2006

Ecological And Engineering Importance Of The Bet El Ras Beach-Sandstone, N. Nyandwi, J. W. Kangwe

Tanzania Journal of Science

A unique sandstone known as the Bet el Ras sandstone, supposedly of Holocene age, occurs profusely along the western coast of Unguja but more extensive at its locality area, Bet el Ras, where it forms a rocky shore. The sandstone has been blasted in the past for construction of the sea wall that fronts the Zanzibar Town, and stands to be blasted further for renovation works. From the results of the survey made, it is clear that the sandstone is ecologically and environmentally important such that its total removal will lead to loss of a habitat as well as enhance …

Incentivizing And Protecting Informants Prior To Mass Atrocities Such As Genocide: An Alternative To Post Hoc Courts And Tribunals, Eric Talbot Jensen Dec 2006

Incentivizing And Protecting Informants Prior To Mass Atrocities Such As Genocide: An Alternative To Post Hoc Courts And Tribunals, Eric Talbot Jensen

Faculty Scholarship

International institutions are almost exclusively reactive to violations of international law. There are very few systemic methods of proactively trying to prevent egregious violations such as genocide; rather, international law seems to take punishing violators as its sole approach. In modern times, most of the punishment and post-event enforcement has come through international courts and tribunals. These courts and tribunals are astoundingly expensive and notoriously inefficient. More importantly, the threat of prosecution does not appear to act as an effective deterrent in preventing criminal acts. This is unacceptable. With hundreds of thousands of lives at stake, the international community must …

Transportation Of Stowaways, Drugs And Contraband By Sea From The Maghreb Region : Legal And Policy Aspects, Semir T. Maksen

World Maritime University Dissertations

This dissertation is a study of the sensitive and complex maritime security issues of transportation of stowaways, smuggling drugs and contraband goods by sea from the Maghreb region. It considers the national and international contexts within which those threats have grown and discusses the root causes and consequences of this menace with emphasis on legal and policy aspects. This latter represents a challenge for the Maghreb States related to strategies, decision making fostering new reforms and proactive countermeasures. A particular focus on the notion of “maritime crime” is offered. An overview of the new maritime security concerns faced by the …
