Capers, Valerie Interview 1, Bronx African American History Project
Oral Histories
Interviewee: Valerie Capers
Interviewer: Dr. Mark Naison, Maxine Gordon, Dawn Russell
Date of Interview: December 14, 2006
Summarized by Alice Stryker
Valerie’s parents grew up in Harlem. Her maternal great grandmother came to Harlem from Virginia. After the couple was married they moved to the Bronx. She thinks that many newlyweds at the time would move from Harlem to the Bronx. When she was born, the family was living on 168th street between Union and Prospect Avenue. While she was living there, she lost her sight. When she was young she lost her vision. She had pink eye that …

Secis Elements In The Coding Regions Of Selenoprotein Transcripts Are Functional In Higher Eukaryotes, Heiko Mix, Alexey V. Lobanov, Vadim Gladyshev

Expression of selenocysteine (Sec)-containing proteins requires the presence of a cis-acting mRNA structure, called selenocysteine insertion sequence (SECIS) element. In bacteria, this structure is located in the coding region immediately downstream of the Sec-encoding UGA codon, whereas in eukaryotes a completely different SECIS element has evolved in the 3’-untranslated region. Here, we report that SECIS elements in the coding regions of selenoprotein mRNAs support Sec insertion in higher eukaryotes. Comprehensive computational analysis of all available viral genomes revealed a SECIS element within the ORF of a naturally occurring selenoprotein homolog of glutathione peroxidase 4 in fowlpox virus. The fowlpox …
From The Social Margins To The Center: Lebanese Families Who Arrived In South Carolina Before 1950, Elizabeth Whitaker
From The Social Margins To The Center: Lebanese Families Who Arrived In South Carolina Before 1950, Elizabeth Whitaker
All Theses
The Lebanese families who arrived in South Carolina found themselves in a different environment than most had anticipated. Those who had spent time elsewhere in the U.S. found predominantly rural and predominantly Protestant South Carolina to be almost as alien as they or their parents had found the United States due partly to the religious differences and partly to the cultural differences between the Northeast, where most of them had lived for at least a few years after arriving in the United States, and the Southeast. Most of these new arrivals eventually found success and some degree of acceptance, but …

Facts: The appellant was convicted of the offence of using dangerous drugs while he was serving in the IDF. During his interrogation by the police, he confessed to using the drugs, but in his trial he pleaded not guilty and exercised his right to remain silent and not to testify in his own defence.
Following the case law of the Supreme Court, a defendant cannot be convicted solely on the basis of a confession, even when it is freely and willingly given. ‘Something extra’ is required in order to convict him. The District Court Martial and the Appeals Court Martial …

Public Committee Against Torture V. Government, Aharon Barak, Eliezer Rivlin, Dorit Beinisch
Translated Opinions
Facts: In the armed conflict between the State of Israel and the terrorist organizations operating in the territories of Judaea, Samaria and the Gaza Strip the government of the State of Israel decided to adopt a policy of ‘targeted killings’ against terrorists. The petitioners asked the court to declare that this policy was illegal under international law and to order the respondents to desist from using the policy.
Held: Customary international law distinguishes between ‘combatants’ and ‘civilians.’ There is insufficient information for saying that a third category of ‘unlawful combatants’ has been recognized at this time by customary international law. …

Elevated Neutral-To-Earth Voltage In Distribution Systems Including Harmonics, Jian Jiang
Elevated Neutral-To-Earth Voltage In Distribution Systems Including Harmonics, Jian Jiang
All Dissertations
The elevated neutral-to-earth voltage (NEV), and the related phenomenon called stray voltage, is analyzed in multigrounded distribution systems. Elevated NEV is typically caused by fundamental frequency currents returning to the source via the neutral conductor and earth. However, harmonic distortion is also found to contribute to elevated NEV. A multiphase harmonic load flow algorithm is developed to examine the effects of various factors on the NEV, including unsymmetrical system configuration, load unbalance and harmonic injection. To fulfill this objective, the system modeling is adapted to include the neutral conductor into the component equivalent circuit. The overhead transmission line is remodeled …
Regional Innovation Systems (Ris) In The U.S. South: The Role Of Local Characteristics Of Ris In Rural Development, Doohee Lee
All Dissertations
Regional innovation systems (RIS) and innovative activity are now recognized as having important roles to play in regional economic development policy. The goal of this study is to expand our understanding of the relationship between regional economic growth and the local characteristics of RIS. The research identified the existence and importance of sources of innovation, knowledge spillovers, and regional spillovers as the principal characteristics of RIS in the South. A knowledge production function approach was used to estimate the determinants of innovative activity in rural counties. A zero inflated negative binomial model was estimated to capture the influence of local …
Economic Analysis Of Stormwater Management Practices, Ritu Sharma
Economic Analysis Of Stormwater Management Practices, Ritu Sharma
All Dissertations
Structural stormwater management practices help reduce the quantity and improve quality of stormwater runoff. This dissertation focuses on costs and cost effectiveness of these practices. Design, construction and maintenance costs data that were collected from six different sources and adjusted for purchasing power differences over time and location are analyzed using stochastic Leontief cost functions. Effects on these costs of land prices, wages for engineering, construction, and landscaping services, water storage or treatment, and differences in designs of the SMPs and the biophysical regions in which they are located are estimated with the Leontief functions. Results indicate that all SMPs …

Branch Detonation Of A Pulse Detonation Engine With Flash Vaporized Jp-8, John David Slack
Branch Detonation Of A Pulse Detonation Engine With Flash Vaporized Jp-8, John David Slack
Theses and Dissertations
Pulse Detonation Engines (PDE) operating on liquid hydrocarbon fuels are limited to operating frequencies of 35 Hz due to long ignition times from a low energy ignition sources. This study shows ignition time of JP-8 can be nearly eliminated by igniting a thrust tube using a secondary detonation. A counter flow heat exchanger attached to a thrust tube utilized waste heat from the detonation process to heat JP-8 to supercritical conditions. The fuel flash vaporized when injected into the air stream of the engine. A detonation was produced by a spark in a 5 cm diameter, 1.37 m long tube. …
