Renunciation In Contemporary Buddhist Monasticism, Karma Lekshe Tsomo Phd Nov 2006

Renunciation In Contemporary Buddhist Monasticism, Karma Lekshe Tsomo Phd

Theology and Religious Studies: Faculty Scholarship

Celibate monastic practice has been a mainstay of Buddhist societies from the time of the Buddha until the present day. Buddha Sakyamuni specifically rejected the practice of extreme asceticism, but lauded renunciation of the household life. This tradition has continued for two and a half millennia, unchanged in many respects. Robed, shaven-headed, celibate renunciants are found in every Buddhist society even today. The measure of renunciation in contemporary Buddhist monastic practice varies, however, depending on how renunciation is defined. Renunciants are generally thought to live in solitude, apart from society. But it is well known that, except for exceptional individuals …

Inhibition Of Inducible Nitric Oxide Synthase By A Mustard Gas Analog In Murine Macrophages, Min Qui, Victor M. Paromov, Hongsong Yang, Milton Smith, William L. Stone

ETSU Faculty Works

Background: 2-Chloroethyl ethyl sulphide (CEES) is a sulphur vesicating agent and an analogue of the chemical warfare agent 2,2′-dichlorodiethyl sulphide, or sulphur mustard gas (HD). Both CEES and HD are alkylating agents that influence cellular thiols and are highly toxic. In a previous publication, we reported that lipopolysaccharide (LPS) enhances the cytotoxicity of CEES in murine RAW264.7 macrophages. In the present investigation, we studied the influence of CEES on nitric oxide (NO) production in LPS stimulated RAW264.7 cells since NO signalling affects inflammation, cell death, and wound healing. Murine macrophages stimulated with LPS produce NO almost exclusively via inducible nitric …

The Pulmonary Effects Of Intravenous Adenosine In Asthmatic Subjects, Nausherwan K. Burki, Mahmud Alam, Lu-Yuan Lee Nov 2006

The Pulmonary Effects Of Intravenous Adenosine In Asthmatic Subjects, Nausherwan K. Burki, Mahmud Alam, Lu-Yuan Lee

Physiology Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: We have shown that intravenous adenosine in normal subjects does not cause bronchospasm, but causes dyspnea, most likely by an effect on vagal C fibers in the lungs [Burki et al. J Appl Physiol 2005; 98:180-5]. Since airways inflammation and bronchial hyperreactivity are features of asthma, it is possible that intravenous adenosine may be associated with an increased intensity of dyspnea, and may cause bronchospasm, as noted anecdotally in previous reports.

METHODS: We compared the effects of placebo and 10 mg intravenous adenosine, in 6 normal and 6 asthmatic subjects.

RESULTS: Placebo injection had no significant (p > 0.05) effect …

Predictors Of Change In Health Care Use After Marital And Family Therapy, Scott H. Payne Nov 2006

Predictors Of Change In Health Care Use After Marital And Family Therapy, Scott H. Payne

Theses and Dissertations

The cost of health care continues to increase. Based on the biopsychosocial model of heath care, it has been shown that the treatment of psychological and social problems can have a cost offset effect on the cost of medical care. While this offset effect has been shown in an MFT population, there are no known studies that have looked at predictors of the change in medical use by those that receive marital and family therapy. This study looked at psychological and social measures of individuals who received marital and family therapy. These measures were evaluated based on the change from …

Utah Commercial Motor Vehicle Weigh-In-Motion Data Analysis And Calibration Methodology, Luke W. Seegmiller Nov 2006

Utah Commercial Motor Vehicle Weigh-In-Motion Data Analysis And Calibration Methodology, Luke W. Seegmiller

Theses and Dissertations

In preparation for changes in pavement design methodologies and to begin to assess the effectiveness of the weigh-in-motion (WIM) system in Utah, the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) contracted with a Brigham Young University (BYU) research team to conduct an evaluation of their commercial motor vehicle (CMV) data collection system statewide. The objective of this research was to evaluate the CMV data collection program in the state of Utah and to make limited recommendations for potential improvements and changes that will aid in more detailed and accurate CMV data collection across the state. To accomplish the research objectives, several tasks …
