"It shall be unlawful for any person.., who has been convicted in any court of a crime punishable by imprisonment for a term exceeding one year ... to ship or transport in interstate or foreign commerce, or possess in or affecting commerce, any firearm or ammunition ...." Although this statute, 18 U.S.C. § 922(g)(1), was enacted to keep firearms out of the hands of persons not entitled to possess them because of their criminal backgrounds, the scope of this statute has been controversial. When we analyze the source of humor, one ingredient is surely incongruity, the juxtaposition of opposites. So when Tom Lehrer, the consummate Harvard mathematician, openly calls for plagiarism, this is funny because it is exactly the opposite of what we expect - it is absurd. And yet, from the viewpoint of modern economics, is plagiarism really so absurd? We teach our students to maximize short-term profits (in a moral vacuum). We drill them that producers minimize private costs of production (without reference to ethical codes of conduct). Following FCC approval of Ultra-Wide Band (UWB) radio rules for commercial applications in 2002, a UWB radio physical layer standard is currently under development within the IEEE 802 LAN/MAN Standard Committee. Although the UWB transmitter and UWB band are spelled out by the FCC, neither UWB signal forms nor modulation schemes are defined by the regulations [1]. This paper illustrates two types of impulse UWB radio modulation systems and their simulation performance.
