Taking A Closer Look At Measurement – Using Teacher Read Alouds Of Nonfiction To Develop Students’ Measurement Sense, Elana Joram, Faith Garcia Jan 2006

Taking A Closer Look At Measurement – Using Teacher Read Alouds Of Nonfiction To Develop Students’ Measurement Sense, Elana Joram, Faith Garcia

Faculty Publications

Many students think of measurement as a set of procedures, for example, lining up a ruler with an object, and stating the number on the ruler that corresponds with one end of the object. This may be one reason that measurement is typically one of the weakest areas of mathematical achievement on the National Assessment of Educational Progress (Struchens, Martin, & Kenney, 2003). To combat students’ weaknesses in measurement, we suggest that in the early grades they need to develop a feel for standard measurement units, such as inches and feet, and become familiar with real world referents that correspond …

Preservice Elementary Teachers Use Drawings And Make Sets Of Materials To Explain Multiplication And Division By Fractions, Audrey C. Rule, J. E. Hallagan

Open Educational Resources

Background: Multiplication and division by fractions are among the most troublesome concepts in the elementary mathematics curriculum. Recent studies have shown that preservice elementary teachers in the United States do not have deep understandings of these concepts. Effective ways to improve preservice teachers' conceptual understanding of these concepts need to be identified. Citation: Rule, A. C., & Hallagan, J., editors. (2006). Preservice elementary teachers use drawings and make sets of materials to explain multiplication and division by fractions. A research study presented at the 2nd Annual Preparing Mathematicians to Educate Teachers (PMET) Conference at Oswego, New York, June 6, 2006. …

The Effect Of Induced Self-Awareness On Deception Detection, Allyson Leigh Barnacz Jan 2006

The Effect Of Induced Self-Awareness On Deception Detection, Allyson Leigh Barnacz

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Previous research has indicated a relationship between mirror self-recognition and self-awareness (awareness of one's own mind). Theory of Mind (awareness of another's mind; ToM) may be related to both self-awareness and self recognition such that facilitation of self-awareness may be related to a facilitation of ToM. Buckle (1997) found that the relationship between self-recognition and self awareness could be manipulated acutely via a mirror. In her study, Buckle found that participants exposed to a mirror outperformed controls in an episodic memory task (a measure of self-awareness). In the current study, mirror exposure was manipulated to determine if self-exposure would facilitate …

Lillian Smith's Strange Fruit : An Examination Of The Alterical Dimensions, Racial Consciousness, And Silence Of The Southern Woman, Syrena Bothe Jan 2006

Lillian Smith's Strange Fruit : An Examination Of The Alterical Dimensions, Racial Consciousness, And Silence Of The Southern Woman, Syrena Bothe

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

In the 1944 publication of Strange Fruit. Lillian Smith attempts to identify the contradictions between external racial hierarchy, social class, and female whiteness by identifying them first as internal struggles that affected a southerner’s external existence. This is, instead, mis-read as a catastrophic love story between a white boy, Tracy Deen, and a black girl, Non Anderson.

However, this struggle of racial consciousness is a motif and driving force that heavily weights the intentions and choices of both white and black people in Strange Fruit. It is breath and instinct that lives in each southern inhabitant, it is the air …

The Influence Of Supplemental Feeding On The Movement Patterns Of The Southern Stingray, Dasyatis Americana, At Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands, Mark John Corcoran Jan 2006

The Influence Of Supplemental Feeding On The Movement Patterns Of The Southern Stingray, Dasyatis Americana, At Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands, Mark John Corcoran

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

There are currently over 300 sites in nearly 40 countries where a variety of marine animals are provided supplemental food by humans. The influence of this supplemental feeding on the behavior, physiology, growth, reproduction and movements of the animals involved is seldom known. Intentional supplemental feeding of the southern stingray, Dasyatis americana, has occurred at Stingray City (SC) and Stingray City Sandbar (SCS) at Grand Cayman since 1986. There are no specific regulations governing the feeding of D. americana at Grand Cayman, and neither the species nor the feeding sites are afforded any official protective status. This study investigated …

Scholarly Communication And Knowledge Management In American Zoos, Julia Innes Jan 2006

Scholarly Communication And Knowledge Management In American Zoos, Julia Innes

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

The researcher investigated whether frontline, tacit knowledge about zoo animals was captured by zookeepers, curators, researchers, veterinarians, and outside researchers and, if so, whether and how it was transmitted into the scholarly literature. A bibliometric analysis was done of a representative sample of peer-reviewed zoo research articles published between 1973 and 200 I. This was extended to grey literature and acknowledgements statements from the same period to obtain a more global picture.

Research participants were evaluated in terms of their contributions (journal articles, conference papers, or acknowledged research assistance). Changes were mapped chronologically and by profess ion. The participation of …

Guideline Institutionalization: The Role Of Merger Guidelines In Antitrust Discourse, Hillary Greene Jan 2006

Guideline Institutionalization: The Role Of Merger Guidelines In Antitrust Discourse, Hillary Greene

Faculty Articles and Papers

With the growth of the administrative state, agency-promulgated enforcement policy statements, typically referred to as guidelines, have become ubiquitous in the U.S. federal system. Yet, the actual usage and impact of such guidelines is poorly understood. Often the issuing agencies declare the guidelines to be nonbinding, even for themselves. Notwithstanding this disclaimer, the government, private parties, and even the courts frequently rely on the guidelines in a precedent-like manner. In this Article, Professor Greene examines the evolution of one system of enforcement policy guidelines - the U.S. federal antitrust merger guidelines - and finds that these guidelines have acted as …

Accommodations And Modification For Elementary Students With Special Needs, Malydi Wolfe Jan 2006

Accommodations And Modification For Elementary Students With Special Needs, Malydi Wolfe

Honors Capstones

As an education major it is important to understand and be able to properly assess disabilities that I may come in contact with when I have a classroom of my own. With many government laws like IDEA, which is the law authorizing special education, and No Child Left Behind I feel it is in my best interest to stay abreast of current accommodations and modifications both research and teachers suggest for students with disabilities. By doing this I am providing my students with a chance to succeed in the best possible environment. I am also staying up-to-date and compliant with …

The Development Of Perfectionism Among Adolescents: Comparing The Influence Of Friends And Parents, Heather Kwoka '06 Jan 2006

The Development Of Perfectionism Among Adolescents: Comparing The Influence Of Friends And Parents, Heather Kwoka '06

Honors Projects

This study investigated the development of perfectionism in adolescence by examining the associations between perfectionism, parenting styles, and friendship experiences. Furthermore, this study investigated the nature of perfectionism by examining whether internal psychological characteristics (i.e., loneliness, depressive symptoms, anxiety, self-esteem, and life satisfaction) were associated with the development of types of perfectionism (i.e., adaptive and maladaptive) or orientations of perfectionism (i.e., self-oriented or socially prescribed). Gender differences regarding each of these components were also explored. Questionnaires were completed by sixth, seventh, and eighth grade adolescents that measured perfectionism, internal psychological characteristics, perspective on parenting styles, and friendship quality. Three general …

The Relationship Between Gay-Related Stress And Ethnicity For Homosexual And Bisexual Males, Keyona Jarrett '06 Jan 2006

The Relationship Between Gay-Related Stress And Ethnicity For Homosexual And Bisexual Males, Keyona Jarrett '06

Honors Projects

This was a two-part study that aimed to explore the relations between ethnicity and internal and external gay-related stress for homosexual and bisexual males. In the first study, ethnic participants exhibited more internal and external gay-related stress than Caucasian participants. Ethnicity was found to be closely related to internal gay-related stress, and less related to external gay-related stress. In the second study, which' was a secondary analysis of data from the Lighthouse Institute, ethnicity and/or sexual orientation did not seem to be closely related to substance abuse or mental/emotional health issues.

The Perceived Attractiveness Of Adult Facial Prototypes, Ashley Whittington '06 Jan 2006

The Perceived Attractiveness Of Adult Facial Prototypes, Ashley Whittington '06

Honors Projects

This study investigated attractiveness ratings of individual faces and facial prototypes while controlling for symmetry. Symmetry was controlled by comparing symmetric individual faces to prototypes composed of 2, 4, 8, and 16 symmetric faces, morphed together by blending facial features such as eyes, nose, eyebrows, mouth, and outer contour. Adult male and female participants (N = 139, M age = 19.12 years) viewed stimuli presented on a computer monitor and rated the attractiveness of each facial stimuli on a 10 point scale, with higher values representing increased attractiveness. Results indicated that attractiveness ratings increased as the number of faces in …

Female Genital Mutilation In Kenya: Evidence Links Health Workers To Fgm, Population Council, Gtz Jan 2006

Female Genital Mutilation In Kenya: Evidence Links Health Workers To Fgm, Population Council, Gtz

Reproductive Health

Female genital mutilation (FGM) is a traditional practice that affects women and girls in several African countries. It is practiced in a variety of ways, classified by WHO into four broad types all found in Kenya. In some communities it is associated with passage into maturity; in others, it is considered a symbol of ethnic identity, a religious obligation, or a necessary prerequisite for marriage, either through symbolizing attainment of womanhood or as a means of preserving and demonstrating virginity. FGM is considered a harmful traditional practice because it may be associated with a variety of short- and long-term health …

A Measurement Model Of Women's Behavioral Risk Taking, Carol Vanzile-Tamsen, Maria Testa, Jennifer A. Livingston, Lisa L. Harlow Jan 2006

A Measurement Model Of Women's Behavioral Risk Taking, Carol Vanzile-Tamsen, Maria Testa, Jennifer A. Livingston, Lisa L. Harlow

Psychology Faculty Publications

The current study was designed to gain a better understanding of the nature of the relationship between substance use and sexual risk taking within a community sample of women (N = 1,004). Using confirmatory factor analysis, the authors examined the factor structure of sexual risk behaviors and substance use to determine whether they are best conceptualized as domains underlying a single, higher order, risk-taking propensity. A 2 higher order factor model (sexual risk behavior and substance use) provided the best fit to the data, suggesting that these 2 general risk domains are correlated but independent factors. Sensation seeking had large …
