The Impact Of Sleep Quality And Duration On College Student Adjustment And Health, Robert L. Krenek Jr. Jan 2006

The Impact Of Sleep Quality And Duration On College Student Adjustment And Health, Robert L. Krenek Jr.

Doctoral Dissertations

College years are a time of change and transition that involves complex challenges in academic, social, personal/emotional, and institutional adjustment. Stress, anxiety, and tension are often associated with college transition and adjustment; stress and worry have been related to poor sleep quality. Studies have found that college students have more sleep problems than the general public. Research has shown that poor sleep has adverse effects on cognition, mood, and other physiological and psychological aspects of human functioning. Recent research has indicated that sleep quality may be more important than amount of sleep. Relationships have been found between sleep problems and …

An Exploratory Study Of The Influence Of Life Management Strategies On Job Satisfaction And Job Performance In A Personal Selling Context, Dheeraj Sharma Jan 2006

An Exploratory Study Of The Influence Of Life Management Strategies On Job Satisfaction And Job Performance In A Personal Selling Context, Dheeraj Sharma

Doctoral Dissertations

Extant literature on goal oriented behaviors suggests that individual goal orientation is an important determinant of a salesperson's job satisfaction and job performance. However, the present conceptualization of goal orientation suffers from flawed paradigmatic structure. There are two major disparate paradigms of goal orientation in the extant literature. The first paradigm views goal orientation as a stable personality trait and the second paradigm views it as contextually driven phenomenon. The present study proffers a new approach of conceptualizing individual goal orientation, by introducing the meta-model of Life Management Strategies (Baltes and Baltes, 1998; Freund and Baltes, 1998) in the personal …

"Lightning Out Of Heaven": Joseph Smith And The Forging Of Community, Terryl L. Givens

BYU Studies

Several weeks ago I received an email from someone who identified himself as a BYU student doing a research paper on the Prophet Joseph Smith. He asked, “Would you be kind enough to share with me what you feel the impact of Joseph Smith and the Book of Mormon on the world has been?” This was an important question, so I took time framing my reply. I wrote, “It was big.” However, upon reflection, I decided against sending that email. I did not want to do most of his work for him. I thought perhaps I would now revisit that …

Racial Profiling And The War On Terror: Changing Trends And Perspectives, Abu B. Bah Jan 2006

Racial Profiling And The War On Terror: Changing Trends And Perspectives, Abu B. Bah

Ethnic Studies Review

Minorities in the United States have often been treated unfairly by law enforcement agencies. Prior to the September 11, 2001, terrorist attack on the United States, Blacks were the main victims of racial profiling. Since the terrorist attack, however, Arabs and Muslims are becoming the primary targets for profiling by law enforcement agencies. There are some remarkable similarities between the profiling of Blacks and the profiling of Arabs and Muslims. In both cases, the fundamental problems with racial profiling are that it violates the civil liberties of innocent people and denies minorities the equal protection of the law. The War …

Transition From Home Through Preschool To School, Mariani Md Nor, Ananda Kumar Palaniappan, Zahari Ishak, Ahmad Zabidi Abdul Razak, Mahzan Arshad Jan 2006

Transition From Home Through Preschool To School, Mariani Md Nor, Ananda Kumar Palaniappan, Zahari Ishak, Ahmad Zabidi Abdul Razak, Mahzan Arshad

Research Publications (2006 to 2010)

Studies have shown that successful adjustment of children in preschool is critical in determining their future success in school (Ladd & Price, 1987). Issues relating to preschool adjustment have contributed to many problems faced by the child as well as the family and school (Ladd, 1990). As such a seamless transition from home to school is seen as crucial in ensuring the continuous development of the child cognitively, physically, socially and emotionally. Parent, preschool teachers and headmasters play an important role in easing the transition from home to preschool as well as from preschool to school. This study intends to …

Functional Hemispherectomy For The Treatment Of Intractable Seizures, John P. Girvin, Saleh S. Baeesa Jan 2006

Functional Hemispherectomy For The Treatment Of Intractable Seizures, John P. Girvin, Saleh S. Baeesa

Neurosciences

Hemispherectomy is the most successful operation for the control of seizures in a very select group of patients with infantile hemiplegia and intractable epilepsy. The efficacy of anatomical hemispherectomy has been offset to some degree by the fact that up to one third of those operated upon will subsequently develop obstructive hydrocephalus, and the so-called superficial subpial cerebral hemosiderosis, with potentially fatal complications. This review article details the operative technique of a modified ‘functional’ hemispherectomy. In essence, the technique consists of removing the central (Rolandic) cortex and the temporal lobe of the affected hemisphere and leaving the remainder of the …

From Hockey Gloves To Handcuffs: The Need For Criminal Sanctions In Professional Ice Hockey, Tracey Oh Jan 2006

From Hockey Gloves To Handcuffs: The Need For Criminal Sanctions In Professional Ice Hockey, Tracey Oh

UC Law SF Communications and Entertainment Journal

Citing recent on-ice incidents, this article argues that the level of violence in the National Hockey League (NHL) has grown out of control. The NHL's sanctions have been unable to deter the steadily increasing amount of violence in the sport. The article argues that allowing courts to intervene and impose criminal sanctions against on-ice offenders would send a strong message to the players, and promote a sense of social responsibility.

The Conceptual Game In Copyright, Lior Zemer Jan 2006

The Conceptual Game In Copyright, Lior Zemer

UC Law SF Communications and Entertainment Journal

This article examines the nature of copyright as a concept and discusses the benefits that can be derived from understanding copyright as a vague conceptual framework, or, alternatively as an arsenal of competing interpretations and permutations, rendering its meaning essentially contested. The best way to make meaningful progress in the way we approach and think of copyright is by admitting into our discourse on copyright alternative approaches to ownership which emphasizes the public interest. We can protect the integrity of the copyright discourse by ensuring that no single voice can exclude other voices, and allow sufficient conceptual flexibility to permit …

Faulting San Andreas: The Call To Arms For Sensible Regulation Of Violent Video Games, Jessica Williams Jan 2006

Faulting San Andreas: The Call To Arms For Sensible Regulation Of Violent Video Games, Jessica Williams

UC Law SF Communications and Entertainment Journal

Video game violence has escalated to shocking limits. Murder and sex are glorified in modern games. California Assembly Bill 1179 is the latest attempt to curb the sale of video games encouraging this type of violence. Because it is improbable that current social science research will be able to prove the causal connections necessary to satisfy the Brandenburg standard for regulating free speech, AB 1179 violates the First Amendment rights of California's citizens. In the future, increased parental controls and the Entertainment Software Ratings Board's active role in enforcing compliance with its rating system will be the most effective means …

A Preferred Vision For Leading Secondary Schools : A Reflective Essay, Brian J. Downing Jan 2006

A Preferred Vision For Leading Secondary Schools : A Reflective Essay, Brian J. Downing

Graduate Research Papers

The role of administrator, when done successfully, is a difficult and multifaceted one. It involves fulfilling many different duties with many different groups simultaneously. Educational leadership is a balancing act of the day-today and the unexpected emergencies, of the mundane and the exceptional, of management and progress. This task would be difficult to accomplish by a team of professionals, let alone by one person. We all have our talents and abilities in certain of these areas but a successful administrator needs to be competent in all of them and be able to balance them effectively.

What I Believe About Leadership And Education : A Reflective Essay, Valerie J. Daily

Graduate Research Papers

Educating our children is the most worthy, rewarding, and influential profession obtainable. Educators join the profession to improve our society and because they care about children. The task educators face is immense. Every child can learn. I believe good teachers can positively impact the lives of children and their families.

Teaching is an art and good teachers teach children how to learn. Good teachers provide a variety of resources and tools a child can use in several situations to enhance learning. Good teachers ask thoughtful, and purposeful questions that leave a child a curious learner. Education should be a highly …

Supermajoritarianism And The American Criminal Jury, Ethan J. Leib Jan 2006

Supermajoritarianism And The American Criminal Jury, Ethan J. Leib

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

In Apodaca v. Oregon and Johnson v. Louisiana, the Supreme Court allowed the relaxation of the decision rule most commonly associated with criminal jury felony verdicts and held that unanimity in state criminal cases is not constitutionally required. The Court announced that states were allowed to use 10-2 and 9-3 verdicts in non-capital state cases in contravention of the traditional rule requiring unanimity. The Court argued that the essential function of the jury is to place between the accused and the state a commonsense group of laymen representing a cross-section of the community-and that relaxation of the unanimity requirement would …

An American Dilemma Of The 21st Century?, Wallerstein Jan 2006

An American Dilemma Of The 21st Century?, Wallerstein

Societies Without Borders

In 1941, Henry Luce proclaimed the twentieth century the American Century. And in 1944, Gunnar Myrdal wrote of the American dilemma, the discrepancy between its values and the actual treatment of Black Americans. In the post-1945 period, the need of a hegemonic United States to project a positive world image led to major improvements in the position of Black Americans – an improvement however primarily for educated elites and much less for the Black working-class strata. In the period since 1970, U.S. power has been on the decline, which has caused increased internal tensions in the U.S. This intersects with …

The Psychological Effects Of Exposure To Wartime Trauma In Bosnian Residents And Refugees: Implications For Treatment And Service Provision, Sandina Begic, Theodore Mcdonald Jan 2006

The Psychological Effects Of Exposure To Wartime Trauma In Bosnian Residents And Refugees: Implications For Treatment And Service Provision, Sandina Begic, Theodore Mcdonald

Public and Population Health Faculty Publications and Presentations

It has been widely reported that exposure to war-related trauma leads to psychological distress in human beings, and it has been hypothesized that this psychological distress may be compounded when people leave their war-torn countries and begin their lives as refugees in a new country. In this study, we explored whether a systematic relationship existed between the level of traumatic wartime events experienced by Bosnian residents and refugees living in the western United States and their levels of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, and depression. We also explored whether differences in levels of these mental health problems existed between Bosnian …
