Adolescent Alcohol Use: Mixed Methods Research Approach, Ian Newman, Duane F. Shell, Qu Ming, Xue Jianping, Michelle R. Maas Jan 2006

Adolescent Alcohol Use: Mixed Methods Research Approach, Ian Newman, Duane F. Shell, Qu Ming, Xue Jianping, Michelle R. Maas

Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications

This paper describes how one research team uses a variety of qualitative, cultural anthropological research techniques and qualitative survey research techniques to better understand the characteristics of young people who drink and do not drink alcohol. The team used qualitative methods of cultural anthropology for initial small-group studies of three mental constructs known to predict behaviors. These mental constructs are: what young people expect to happen when they drink alcohol (alcohol expectancies), how they view Chinese and Western cultural values (cultural orientation), and how confident they are in believing they can manage pressures to drink alcohol (self-efficacy). Data from the …

An Ontology-Based Metamodel For Software Patterns, Scott Henninger, Padmapriya Ashokkumar Jan 2006

An Ontology-Based Metamodel For Software Patterns, Scott Henninger, Padmapriya Ashokkumar

School of Computing: Technical Reports

Patterns have been successfully used in software design to reuse proven solutions. But the complex interconnections and the number of pattern collections is becoming a barrier for identifying relevant patterns and pattern combinations for a given design context. More formal representations of patterns are needed that allow machine processing and the creation of systematic pattern languages that guide composition of patterns into coherent design solutions. In this paper, we present a technique based on Description Logic and Semantic Web technologies to address these problems. A metamodel is presented for developing pattern languages using this technology. Usability patterns are used to …

American Sign Language - Sentence Reproduction Test: Development & Implications, Peter C. Hauser, Raylene Paludneviciene, Ted Supalla, Daphne Bavelier

Presentations and other scholarship

The deaf community is widely heterogeneous in its language background. Widespread variation in fluency exists even among users of American Sign Language (ASL), the natural gestural language used by deaf people in North America. This variability is a source of unwanted "noise" in many psycholinguistic and pedagogical studies. Our aim is to develop a quantitative test of ASL fluency to allow researchers to measure and make use of this variability. We present a new test paradigm for assessing ASL fluency modeled after the Speaking Grammar Subtest of the Test of Adolescent and Adult Language, 3'd Edition (TOAL3; Hammill, Brown, Larsen, …

Close-Up: Contemporary Deaf Filmmakers, Karen Christie, Patricia Durr, Dorothy Wilkens

Presentations and other scholarship

Professors and filmmakers, Facundo Montenegro (2006) and Dr. Jane Norman (2005) have both asked the question "What is Deaf Cinema?" In this paper, we look at a number of films screened at the Deaf Rochester Film Festival (DRFF) '05 and produced by contemporary Deaf student filmmakers for some answers. In particular, we note how the filmmakers utilized the medium of film to communicate: the use of themes, discourse format, and visual aesthetics.

Boundedly Rational Borrowing, Cass R. Sunstein Jan 2006

Boundedly Rational Borrowing, Cass R. Sunstein

University of Chicago Law Review

Excessive borrowing, no less than insufficient savings, might be a product of bounded rationality. Identifiable psychological mechanisms are likely to contribute to excessive borrowing; these include myopia, procrastination, optimism bias, "miswanting," and what might be called cumulative cost neglect. Suppose that excessive borrowing is a significant problem for some or many; if so, how might the law respond? The first option involves weak paternalism, through debiasing and other strategies that leave people free to choose as they wish. Another option is strong paternalism, which forecloses choice. Because of private heterogeneity and the risk of government error, regulators should have a …

Human Rights In Colombia, Mariko Frame Jan 2006

Human Rights In Colombia, Mariko Frame

Human Rights & Human Welfare

With its notoriously vicious paramilitary death squads, rampant drug trade and collusive government, Colombia remains a complex and tumultuous nation. Needless to say, the human rights history of this country has been marked by political violence, absence of due process, and at times a general lawlessness that has made it perpetually unstable. Coupled with Colombia's domestic problems, U.S. involvement in its 'war on drugs' has exacerbated the situations that already were at a boiling point. With an ongoing power struggle between the government, the military and the drug lords, it is no exaggeration to describe Colombia as in a constant …

Unchain My Heart: Slavery As A Defense To The Dismantling Of The Violence Against Women Act, Angie Perone Jan 2006

Unchain My Heart: Slavery As A Defense To The Dismantling Of The Violence Against Women Act, Angie Perone

UC Law SF Journal on Gender and Justice

When Congress passed the Violence Against Women Act ("VAWA"), it aimed to address pervasive problems associated with gender-motivated violence. Through inclusion of a section entitled "Civil Rights for Women," Congress specifically created a federal civil rights remedy for victims of gender-motivated violence. Nevertheless, the U.S. Supreme Court invalidated the civil rights remedy provision of the VAWA, claiming that Congress lacked authority to pass this provision under the Commerce Clause and the 14th Amendment. This Note argues that Congress has authority under the 13th Amendment to reinvigorate the civil rights remedy in the VAWA. This Note compares antebellum slavery to domestic …

Boundaries Around Common Ground: Strategies In Supervision Of International Doctoral Candidates, Andrew M. Guilfoyle Jan 2006

Boundaries Around Common Ground: Strategies In Supervision Of International Doctoral Candidates, Andrew M. Guilfoyle

EDU-COM International Conference

Within critical fiscal and social gains of diversity in hosting International Doctoral (ID) Candidates, it is important to explore boundaries around the successful outcomes related to these cohorts. Interestingly, despite this significant field, little systematic research has been published on the teaching practices of supervisors in the ID context. Set with transition research, the paper identifies the central role of supervisory practices in bounding effective transition of ID candidates. Based on data from several sources including an extensive review of literature, qualitative interviews with International Doctorates (n= 26) and a series of supervisors‘ workshops; key strategies for establishing ‗common ground‘ …

Teaching English As A Foreign Language To Grade 7 Students In Thailand: Genre-Based Versus Traditional Method, Sanguansri Torok, Russell F. Waugh Jan 2006

Teaching English As A Foreign Language To Grade 7 Students In Thailand: Genre-Based Versus Traditional Method, Sanguansri Torok, Russell F. Waugh

EDU-COM International Conference

This study compared a genre-based method of teaching English to Prathom (grade) 7 secondary students in Thailand and a traditional method. Rasch-generated linear scales were created to measure reading comprehension (based on 18 items with 300 students) and attitude and behaviour to learning EFL (based on 36 items with 296 students). The data for both scales had a good fit to a Rasch measurement model, good separation of measures compared to the errors, good targeting, and the response categories were answered consistently and logically, so that valid inferences could be drawn. Ninety students from three secondary schools in Ratchaburi, Thailand, …

Growth Intentions Of Owner-Managers Of Young Microfirms, Rolland Lebrasseur, Huguette Blanco, John L. Dodge

New England Journal of Entrepreneurship

A survey of young microfirms was conducted to investigate their growth intentions. The findings confirm the distinct profiles of four types of firms categorized on the basis of current and future employment: Lifestyler, Entrepreneur, Manager, and Mover. They differ in terms of the owner’s perceptions of the desirability and practicality of growing their firm, and with respect to the moderating variables of industry affiliation, business location, and investment level. Research issues and service implications for business support agencies are identified.

The Embedded Entrepreneur: Recognizing The Strength Of Ethnic Social Ties, Ed Chung, Kim Whalen Jan 2006

The Embedded Entrepreneur: Recognizing The Strength Of Ethnic Social Ties, Ed Chung, Kim Whalen

New England Journal of Entrepreneurship

This article is premised on the idea that social networks represent an important, but often overlooked, unit of analysis in management and entrepreneurship studies. The concept of embeddedness, emphasizing the significance of social relationships, is of particular relevance as more and more frequently minorities and immigrants engage in small businessownership. This article borrows from the ethnicity and social network traditions, and offers that an analysis of the ethnic homogeneity of an entrepreneur’s strong and weak social ties would be fruitful in gauging entrepreneurial success.

The Often-Neglected Term In The Entrepreneurial Equation—The Purchase Order, Deaver Brown, Joseph E. Levangie Jan 2006

The Often-Neglected Term In The Entrepreneurial Equation—The Purchase Order, Deaver Brown, Joseph E. Levangie

New England Journal of Entrepreneurship

Many entrepreneurs are enthralled with their company’s technologies, products and potential markets. Invariably these emerging ventures present bedazzling business plans with industry-wise vernacular, detailed market research, and sophisticated financial spreadsheets. They often flaunt their “optimized business models.” Investors, however, typically want to know when and how the sales will start meeting the Plan. “Where’s the purchase order?” is the refrain. In this article, our “Practitioner’s Corner” associate editor Joe Levangie collaborates with a long-time colleague, Deaver Brown, to address how businesses should “make sales happen.” Levangie warns that Brown’s elitist education (Choate, Harvard College, Harvard Business School) should not be …

The Effects Of Eating Disorders On Student Academic Achievement And The School Counselor’S Role, Dana Livingston, Lori Sammons Jan 2006

The Effects Of Eating Disorders On Student Academic Achievement And The School Counselor’S Role, Dana Livingston, Lori Sammons

Perspectives In Learning

Eating Disorders have become an increasing reality among today’s youth. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, “approximately one out of every 100 adolescent girls develops anorexia.. .another two to five out of every 100 young women develop bulimia nervosa” (Understanding Disordered Eating and Eating Disorders, 2005, p. 6). Although eating disorders are usually seen as affecting girls, studies have shown that hundreds of thousands of boys experience eating disorders as well (Boys and Eating Disorders, 2004). Factors that make anorexia and bulimia painful, such as intense fear of weight gain and lack of self-esteem, cannot be …

Conflict, Learning, And Frustration: A Dynamic Model Of Conflict Over Time, Matthew A. Cronin, Katerina Bezrukova Jan 2006

Conflict, Learning, And Frustration: A Dynamic Model Of Conflict Over Time, Matthew A. Cronin, Katerina Bezrukova

Psychology

A continuing question in the study of conflict and conflict management is, "When is conflict helpful, and when is it harmful?" Though many have offered explanations for this (Jehn, Northcraft, & Neale, 1999), data in support of these notions have been less forthcoming, especially in relation to the helpfulness of conflict (De Dreu & Weingart, 2003). In this paper we 2 present a dynamic model of conflict that we hope will both explain and clarify the confusion by conceptualizing conflict as simultaneously containing helpful (learning related) and harmful (negative sentiment related) components. We argue how both learning and negative emotion …

Artists' Depictions Of Catsteps In The Loess Hills Of Iowa: Evidence For Mid-Nineteenth Century Climate Change, Kimberly R. Dillon, Steven H. Emerman, Pamela K. Wilcox Jan 2006

Artists' Depictions Of Catsteps In The Loess Hills Of Iowa: Evidence For Mid-Nineteenth Century Climate Change, Kimberly R. Dillon, Steven H. Emerman, Pamela K. Wilcox

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Catsteps are the staircase-like features common on hillslopes of the Loess Hills of western Iowa. The record of artistic depictions of the Loess Hills was examined to determine when catsteps appeared. George Catlin, Karl Bodmer, and John James Audubon traveled up the Missouri River m 1832, 1833 and 1843, respectively, and between them, produced 31 works of art depicting either the Loess Hills or the loess bluffs on the Nebraska side of the river. Only three works by Bodmer of Blackbird Hill on the Nebraska side possibly show catsteps. The Assistant State Geologist, Orestes St. John, produced six sketches of …

The Sales Managers' Implicit Personality Theory And Leadership Variables, Gordon Gunn Mosley

Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship of sales managers' implicit personality theory and various leadership variables provided to salespeople by their sales managers. Several bodies of literature were reviewed for this study from the educational psychology, management, leadership, and marketing/sales disciplines. More specifically, this study addressed the following research questions: (1) What effect does sales managers' implicit personality theory have on the nature of the feedback they provide to their salespeople? (2) What effect does sales managers' implicit personality theory have of the transformational leadership they provide to their salespeople? (3) What effect does sales managers' …
