Examining The Structural Covariates Of Methamphetamine Use: A Social Disorganization Perspective, Justin Smith
Examining The Structural Covariates Of Methamphetamine Use: A Social Disorganization Perspective, Justin Smith
Masters Theses
There have been many anecdotal accounts describing the characteristics of individuals involved in methamphetamine use, trafficking and production. However, prior to the current study there was yet to be a macro-level analysis of methamphetamine use. The extant macro-level literature on drug use has suggested that areas with high levels of social disorganization experience high rates of drug use. It was expected that school-districts with low SES and high rates of ethnic heterogeneity, residential instability and family disruption will experience high rates of methamphetamine use. In addition, it was expected that rural school districts would show higher rates than urban and …

Evaluation Of The Effectiveness Of A Humor Workshop On The Perceived Stress Of Nurse Practitioner Students, Stephanie A. Emerson
Master's Projects
A quasi-experimental one-group pretest posttest design was used to evaluate the effectiveness of a humor workshop on the perceived stress of a sample of nurse practitioner students (n = 9) at a major university. Testing aimed at measuring perceived stress, was completed before and after participation in a" orkshop focusing on the application of humor skills in the healthcare environment. For the total sample, the mean pretest score was 15.22, SD = 5.42 and the mean posttest score was 1 0.33, SD = 3.90. A dependent samples !-test revealed a statistically significant difference (t = 4.55, p < .002). Results indicate that participation in a humor workshop of this type may be associated with lower levels of perceived stress.

Current Status Of Child Sexual Abuse In Chattanooga, Tn As Reflected In Treatment And Legal Systems: A View From The Experts, Julie F. Joy
Current Status Of Child Sexual Abuse In Chattanooga, Tn As Reflected In Treatment And Legal Systems: A View From The Experts, Julie F. Joy
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Child sexual abuse, a horrific and damaging crime against the most vulnerable of human beings, is decried by major religions and cultures around the world. And yet, it is flourishing today in various forms within every major society. Empirical research has been conducted in the areas of treatment and legal issues for victims of child sexual abuse. This research indicates a dichotomy of advocates in treatment systems and skeptics in legal systems that could conflict with each other in providing treatment and justice to abuse victims. This study offers a view of the status of child sexual abuse in one …

Bob Dylan And The Sixties: A Social Commentary Reflecting Politics And Existentialism, Nicole Lemieux
Honors College Theses
The 60s were typified by a generation's profound political activism. Issues of race, class, gender, among others each came to the forefront at various points throughout the decade, and acts of protest have come to symbolize the movement's desire for change. While masses of people sought to protest by marching on Washington, some wrote. Through works like James Baldwin's The Fire Next Time and Norman Mailer's The Armies of the Night , the struggles that were being so passionately fought by thousands were able to be recorded and preserved for generations that were to come. However, the writer who would …

Are We Equally Irrational In Financial And Everyday Decisions?, Milena Kats
Honors College Theses
This paper investigates whether people are equally irrational in finance and everyday decisions by examining the responses of a 20-question survey conducted at Pace University. Results from our data indicated that we could not conclude that people are more irrational in one area more than the other. People appear to be equally overconfident in both. Testing for frame versus substance, the second set of data; the t-test signifies that people are more irrational in their finance decisions than they are in their everyday decisions with more than 99% certainty. The third and final category of responses were tested for problem …

Gender And Cultural Differences In Body Dissatisfaction And Self-Esteem, Nadezhda Shepeliak
Honors College Theses
A total of 144 college students (103 were females) participated in a study investigating the gender and cultural variation in the relationship betwen body image dissatisfaction and self-esteem. The results revealed a significant negative correlation between one's body image dissatisfaction and self-esteem. No cultural differences were found in either body dissatisfaction or self-esteem; however, the study did yield several findings with regard to gender differences. Females were more satisfied than male participants with their upper torso, and male engaged in more body avoidance behavior than did female participants. Social-cultural approach to studying body image dissatisfaction was evaluated and discussed with …

This study compares ABI/INFORM and Business Source Premier, the two major periodical databases in the business field, to determine which database is covering the major scholarly journals most thoroughly. The comparison was made by compiling a list of major journals based on scholars' choice in the fields of accounting, finance, MIS, and marketing. In the field of management, the journals studied are based on ISI's Journal of Citation Reports. The list was compared with the title lists of journals indexed in each database. The results indicate that the two databases are very similar. ABI/INFORM is more comprehensive in the number …
Implications Of Mass Education On Chemistry Higher Education, Christine O'Connor
Implications Of Mass Education On Chemistry Higher Education, Christine O'Connor
Articles
The following paper discusses the implications of government policy for widening access and participation in third level institutes. The increase in ‘non-traditional’ students has been widely recognised on an international scale; however, some issues of inequality still exist. The ‘struggles’ associated with widening participation and the creation of a ‘new’ student type are discussed, with particular reference to chemistry education. A change is needed with regard to the pedagogical approach taken by staff in order to cater for a diverse student body comprising a broad range of learner types, and this must be supported both at departmental and institutional levels. …

New Explorations In Culture And Crime: Definitions, Theory, Method, Kenneth B. Nunn
New Explorations In Culture And Crime: Definitions, Theory, Method, Kenneth B. Nunn
UF Law Faculty Publications
Culture affects criminal law in at least two key ways. First, culture and crime symbiotically define each other. Second, culture helps explain which courtroom narratives will be successful, and which will not. Culture influences who will be arrested, charged, convicted, and what sentence they will receive. Indeed, the invisible hand of culture drives the process of criminalization and helps to determine which acts we will sanction through criminal statutes.
Bad Faith: Race, Religion And The Reformation Of Welfare Law, Richard Hardack
Bad Faith: Race, Religion And The Reformation Of Welfare Law, Richard Hardack
Cardozo Public Law, Policy & Ethics Journal
The article critically examines the cultural, theological, and legal underpinnings of welfare policies in the United States, arguing that these policies are deeply influenced by racialized and gendered stereotypes. It contends that conservative and liberal thinkers alike have framed welfare as a threat to capitalist values, often justifying this stance through theological and postmodernist ideas. The analysis highlights how welfare is constructed as a declaration of dependence, contradicting the ideals of self-reliance and market-driven solutions. The article also critiques the legal system for failing to recognize welfare as a fundamental right, instead treating it as a privilege subject to state …
A Role For Vasopressin And Oxytocin In Parental Behavior Of The Male Sprague-Dawley Rat, Ekaterina V. Karelina
A Role For Vasopressin And Oxytocin In Parental Behavior Of The Male Sprague-Dawley Rat, Ekaterina V. Karelina
Master's Theses
Paternal behavior, though infrequent in many mammalian species, can be induced under laboratory conditions through manipulation of either hormonal or environmental states. Rodent studies of parental behavior have implicated similarities for males and females in not only the actual behavioral repertoire, but also the brain mechanisms governing the set of behaviors in both sexes. The current project investigated changes in oxytocin and vasopressin in the hypothalamus of paternal male rats. We found that paternal behavior, which was readily induced through sensitization (chronic pup exposure), was significantly correlated with increasing oxytocin and vasopressin immunoreactivity within the paraventricular nucleus. Further, corticosterone levels …
Learned Fear And Reaction To Novel Stimuli: Behavioral And Hormonal Stress Responses In The Maternal Rat, Brandi Nicole Rima
Learned Fear And Reaction To Novel Stimuli: Behavioral And Hormonal Stress Responses In The Maternal Rat, Brandi Nicole Rima
Master's Theses
The present thesis examines the relationship between reproductive experience and the behavioral, neural, and hormonal processes of learned fear in the female rat. Multiple research models indicate that reproductive experience functions to decrease the female's stress response in potentially harmful environments, thus providing her with numerous survival benefits, including decreased fearfulness, increased aggression, and refined hunting skills. Based on existing understandings of maternal experience and unconditioned fear, this study was designed to determine how nulliparous (no reproductive experience, NP), primiparous (one reproductive experience, PP) and multiparous (more than one reproductive experience, MP) rats comparatively respond to a Pavlovian paradigm of …

Reflections From The Introduction Of Blogs And Rss Feeds Into A Preservice Instructional Technology Course, Bruce Gabbitas, Charles R. Graham, Richard E. West, Geoffrey Wright
Faculty Publications
In this paper we report our experiences using blogs and RSS technology to teach over 800 preservice students in an introductory instructional technology course over the course of three semesters. Our main purpose for using blogs and RSS feeds was to promote critical reflection, student collaboration, and professional development. Through focus group interviews and class surveys, we discovered both effective and ineffective methods for integrating blogs and RSS feeds into a course. This paper will reflect on these findings and provide practical ideas for overcoming the challenges we faced in implementing blogs and RSS feeds as effective teaching and learning …
An Exploration Of Artists’ Use Of Color, Kate Horn
An Exploration Of Artists’ Use Of Color, Kate Horn
EVMS School of Health Professions Theses & Dissertations
The use of color creates a varied reaction from person to person within the human experience. Color has been theorized to have many different symbolic meanings. However, no definitive link between color and symbolic meaning has been found. Research about human response to color has been examined in relation to cognitive, psychological, and physiological effects. Within the field of art therapy, color is important for understanding the client’s view. However, the art therapist’s interpretation of client color use may be based on myths perpetrated in the field. In-depth interviews of three professional artists were done in order to explore the …

Moving Here Saved My Life: The Experience Of Formerly Chronically Homeless Women And Men In Quincy's Housing First Projects, Tatjana Meschede
Moving Here Saved My Life: The Experience Of Formerly Chronically Homeless Women And Men In Quincy's Housing First Projects, Tatjana Meschede
Center for Social Policy Publications
For the past ten years, Father Bill’s Place (FBP) in Quincy, Massachusetts, has moved steadily towards providing permanent housing with supportive services rather than emergency shelter as a solution to ending homelessness. According to John Yazwinski, executive director of FBP, the vision for the future is to be able to independently house every homeless person entering FBP within a short period of time instead of “housing” people in the shelter for prolonged periods. As such, sheltering homeless people in mass emergency shelters should be a picture of the past.
Yazwinski’s Housing First Model builds upon an approach of housing “chronically” …

Mean Length Of Utterance In Children With Specific Language Impairment And In Younger Control Children Shows Concurrent Validity And Stable And Parallel Growth Trajectories, Mabel L. Rice, Sean M. Redmond, Lesa Hoffman
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
Purpose: Although mean length of utterance (MLU) is a useful benchmark in studies of children with specific language impairment (SLI), some empirical and interpretive issues are unresolved. The authors report on 2 studies examining, respectively, the concurrent validity and temporal stability of MLU equivalency between children with SLI and typically developing children. Method: Study 1 used 124 archival conversational samples consisting of 39 children with SLI (age 5;0 [years;months]), 40 MLU-equivalent typically developing children (age 3;0), and 45 age-equivalent controls. Concurrent validity of MLU matches was examined by considering the correspondence between MLU and developmental sentence scoring (DSS), …
