Uncontrollable And Unpredictable Stress With A Reminder Experience Induces Long-Lasting Effects On Physiology And Behavior: A Novel Approach To Modeling Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder In Rats, Phillip R. Zoladz Aug 2006

Uncontrollable And Unpredictable Stress With A Reminder Experience Induces Long-Lasting Effects On Physiology And Behavior: A Novel Approach To Modeling Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder In Rats, Phillip R. Zoladz

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

People who endure horrific, life-threatening experiences are at risk for developing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, only about 25% of all individuals who experience trauma develop PTSD. Recent research indicates that the presence of certain physiological conditions, such as reduced cortisol and parasympathetic inhibition, during trauma may increase one's susceptibility to developing PTSD. Thus, I attempted to develop a novel animal model of PTSD and test the hypothesis that reduced adrenal and parasympathetic activity during stress would exacerbate its long-term effects on behavior.

In Experiment One, adult male rats were exposed to two stress sessions, each involving one hour of …

The Effect Of Local Life Circumstances On Female Probationers' Offending, Marie L. Griffin, Gaylene Armstrong Aug 2006

The Effect Of Local Life Circumstances On Female Probationers' Offending, Marie L. Griffin, Gaylene Armstrong

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

This article examines the influence of change in local life circumstances on the short-term criminal behavior of female drug-abusing probationers. Using a binomial hierarchical generalized linear model, we examine the probability that certain “discrete life events” act to modify or change criminal behavior in the short term. The findings indicate that participants' involvement in conventional activities results in the decreased likelihood of engaging in nondrug crimes but an increased likelihood of drug dealing. Faced with this contradiction, we suggest that the dynamics of offending are altered by the nature of the criminal activity itself and the way in which gender …

No Due Process: How The Death Penalty Violates The Constitutional Rights Of The Family Members Of Death Row Prisoners, Rachel C. King Aug 2006

No Due Process: How The Death Penalty Violates The Constitutional Rights Of The Family Members Of Death Row Prisoners, Rachel C. King

ExpressO

The article makes the case for a novel theory that the death penalty violates the constitutional rights of the family members of death row prisoners. First, the article establishes that Americans are entitled to a fundamental “right to family,” based on a long history of Supreme Court jurisprudence that has established substantive due process rights such as the right to marry, to use contraceptives, to have children, to make educational decisions for children, and decisions about how to configure ones’ household. Next, the article makes the case that the death penalty interferes with the constitutional right to family by harming …

Charter Schools And Collective Bargaining: Compatible Marriage Or Illegitimate Relationship, Martin H. Malin, Charles Taylor Kerchner Aug 2006

Charter Schools And Collective Bargaining: Compatible Marriage Or Illegitimate Relationship, Martin H. Malin, Charles Taylor Kerchner

ExpressO

The rapid increase in charter schools has been fueled by the view that traditional public schools have failed because of their monopoly on public education. Charter schools, freed from the bureaucratic regulation that dominates traditional public schools, are viewed as agents of change that will shock traditional public schools out of their complacency. Among the features of the failed status quo are teacher tenure, uniform salary grids and strict work rules, matters that teacher unions hold dear. Yet unions have begun organizing teacher in charter schools. This development prompts the question whether unionization and charter schools are compatible.

In contrast …

Standing For Extraterritoriality: Defining The Empagran Exception, Max Huffman Aug 2006

Standing For Extraterritoriality: Defining The Empagran Exception, Max Huffman

ExpressO

Efforts by private plaintiffs to enforce the U.S. antitrust laws extraterritorially have become an enormous industry. A reflection of the challenges facing federal courts in this global age, F. Hoffman-LaRoche Ltd. v. Empagran S.A. (Empagran) held the Foreign Trade Antitrust Improvements Act of 1982 (FTAIA) precluded the assertion by U.S. courts of jurisdiction over claims by foreign plaintiffs alleging harm felt in wholly foreign commerce.

Empagran left an exception that undermines its general rule. Plaintiffs able sufficiently to show “the anticompetitive conduct’s domestic effects were linked to their foreign harm” are excepted from the preclusion. This is the “Empagran exception.” …

Creation Of Pair Test Online Application, Kevin R. Hayes Aug 2006

Creation Of Pair Test Online Application, Kevin R. Hayes

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

This project researches, analyzes, designs and implements a software application to provide the ability for the PAIR Test to be automated. Currently, the PAIR Test is only available in an offline/manual format. The offline process is not efficient and the data collected does not get stored into a database. The goal of this project is to enable the PAIR Test to become more efficient and have the ability to store results of the testing process into a database for future data analysis. The system will also remove the manual scoring and relationship profile creation by automating this process, resulting in …

Would Banning Firearms Reduce Murder And Suicide? A Review Of International Evidence, Gary A. Mauser, Don B. Kates Aug 2006

Would Banning Firearms Reduce Murder And Suicide? A Review Of International Evidence, Gary A. Mauser, Don B. Kates

ExpressO

The world abounds in instruments with which people can kill each other. Is the widespread availability of one of these instruments, firearms, a crucial determinant of the incidence of murder? Or do patterns of murder and/or violent crime reflect basic socio-economic and/or cultural factors to which the mere availability of one particular form of weaponry is irrelevant?

This article examines a broad range of international data that bear on two distinct but interrelated questions: first, whether widespread firearm access is an important contributing factor in murder and/or suicide, and second, whether the introduction of laws that restrict general access to …

Healing From Within: The Wellness Team Concept, Violet Burnham

Psychology

This project was created to chronicle one community's effort to stem the tide of alcohol abuse and address issues of trauma that had plagued the community for many years despite services provided by the State. It is the story of a group of people who came together despite differences to form a team of service providers that would begin a journey of healing for themselves and the community. The results are coming slowly, but indicate less drinking, less tolerance for any form of abuse, and a healthier lifestyle. Although the journey has not ended, there are many more indicators showing …

Feedback Applications In Active Noise Control For Small Axial Cooling Fans, Matthew J. Green Aug 2006

Feedback Applications In Active Noise Control For Small Axial Cooling Fans, Matthew J. Green

Theses and Dissertations

Feedback active noise control (ANC) has been applied as a means of attenuating broadband noise from a small axial cooling fan. Such fans are used to maintain thermal stability inside of computers, projectors, and other office equipment and home appliances. The type of low-level noise radiated from axial cooling fans has been classified as harmful to productivity and human well being. Previous research has successfully implemented feed-forward ANC, targeting specific narrow-band fan noise content related to the blade passage frequency (BPF) of the fan. The reference signal required for a feed-forward algorithm limits its ability to attenuate much of the …
