The Essential Holding Of Casey: Rethinking Viability, Randy Beck Sep 2006

The Essential Holding Of Casey: Rethinking Viability, Randy Beck

ExpressO

The joint opinion in Casey v. Planned Parenthood included dicta reaffirming the rule that abortion rights extend to the point of fetal viability. This manuscript argues that the Court has never offered an adequate rationale for the viability standard, an unusually permissive line when compared with abortion laws in other countries. The Court's normal obligation to justify the lines it draws is augmented in light of the disparate impacts generated by the viability rule, which attributes constitutional significance to a characteristic that tends to vary with the race and gender of the fetus. The viability standard can also be challenged …

Swosu Fact Book Fall 2006, Denisa Engelman

Fact Books

I am proud to introduce the fifteenth annual Southwestern Oklahoma State University Fact Book. The Fact Book provides a ready source of information to answer frequently asked questions about the University and its operations. Unless otherwise noted, the information in this Fact Book came from computer-generated reports that are printed following the tenth class day of each fall semester. Because of student fluctuations during the semester, numbers will not match other published enrollment numbers that may be based on enrollment at the end of a semester.

Labor Supply With Social Interactions: Econometric Estimates And Their Tax Policy Implications, Andrew Grodner, Thomas J. Kniesner Sep 2006

Labor Supply With Social Interactions: Econometric Estimates And Their Tax Policy Implications, Andrew Grodner, Thomas J. Kniesner

Economics - All Scholarship

Our research fleshes out econometric details of examining possible social interactions in labor supply. We look for a response of a person's hours worked to hours worked in the labor market reference group, which includes those with similar age, family structure, and location. We identify endogenous spillovers by instrumenting average hours worked in the reference group with hours worked in neighboring reference groups. Estimates of the canonical labor supply model indicate positive economically important spillovers for adult men. The estimated total wage elasticity of labor supply is 0.22, where 0.08 is the exogenous wage change effect and 0.14 is the …

Indoctrination, Diversity, And Teaching About Spirituality And Religion In The Workplace, Donald W. Mccormmick Sep 2006

Indoctrination, Diversity, And Teaching About Spirituality And Religion In The Workplace, Donald W. Mccormmick

Organization Management Journal

The author reflects on his experience and discusses problems in teaching a course about spirituality and religion in the workplace. Sometimes indoctrination happens when professors treat their own spiritual ideology as the truth, or they require students to engage in religious practices in class. Indoctrination is teaching people “to accept a system of thought uncritically.” The management education literature has little to say about indoctrination. Indoctrination can be avoided by (1) ensuring informed consent, (2) designing learning activities for students from all spiritual perspectives, (3) teaching about the topic (instead of taking the “how to” approach), (4) presenting diverse spiritual …

The New Breed Of Black South African Senior Managers: Helping South African Businesses Meet The Challenge Of A Transforming Economy, Sylvia Sloan Black, Marta A. Geletkanycz Sep 2006

The New Breed Of Black South African Senior Managers: Helping South African Businesses Meet The Challenge Of A Transforming Economy, Sylvia Sloan Black, Marta A. Geletkanycz

Organization Management Journal

Blacks, while still not an integral part of the management structure in the South African economy, are making gains. As management composition changes, cultural issues will become more salient. Early senior black managers were well versed in the Anglo/American cultures due to foreign education and work experience. Future gains will likely come from internal promotion. This new breed of black managers will be more immersed in their native culture. We posit that, although conflicts between Anglo/American business customs and customs based on the African ubuntu tradition may occur, South African firms will become stronger through increased diversity in senior management …

Mindsets And Internationalization Success: An Exploratory Study Of The British Retail Grocery Industry, Sucheta Nadkarni, Pedro David Perez, Benjamin Morganstein Sep 2006

Mindsets And Internationalization Success: An Exploratory Study Of The British Retail Grocery Industry, Sucheta Nadkarni, Pedro David Perez, Benjamin Morganstein

Organization Management Journal

Despite the growing pressures of internationalization, failures in international efforts are becoming increasingly widespread. Previous literature has developed external environmental and internal firm-specific explanations of international success, but has ignored the role of mindsets in understanding international failures. This gap is especially important because recent studies contend that the mindsets or the way top managers make sense of their global environment is central to international decision making and outcomes. We propose that mindsets are important in explaining international success. We compare the mindsets of two matched firms in the British retail grocery industry—one successful (Tesco) and another unsuccessful (Sainsbury)—from 1988 …

Laboratory Experiments Collection

Finding ways to minimize pain and distress in research animals is a continuing goal in the laboratory animal research field. Pain and distress, however, are not synonymous, and often measures that alleviate one do not affect the other. Here, the authors provide a summary of a meeting held in February 2004 that focused on distress in laboratory animals. They discuss the difficulties associated with defining ‘distress,’ propose methods to aid in recognizing and alleviating distressful conditions, and provide recommendations for animal research conduct and oversight that would minimize distress experienced by laboratory animals.

Mother-Young Recognition In An Ungulate Hider Species: A Unidirectional Proce, Marco V.G. Torriani, Elisabetta Vannoni, Alan G. Mcelligott Sep 2006

Mother-Young Recognition In An Ungulate Hider Species: A Unidirectional Proce, Marco V.G. Torriani, Elisabetta Vannoni, Alan G. Mcelligott

Veterinary Science and Medicine Collection

Parent‐offspring recognition is usually crucial for survival of young. In mammals, olfaction often only permits identification at short range, and vocalizations are important at longer distances. Following and hiding antipredator strategies found in newborn mammals may also affect parental recognition mechanisms. We investigated mother‐offspring recognition in fallow deer, an ungulate hider species. We analyzed the structure of adult female and fawn contact calls to determine whether they are individually distinctive and tested for mother‐offspring recognition. Only females (and not fawns) have individualized vocalizations, with the fundamental frequency as the most distinctive parameter. Playback experiments showed that fawns can distinguish the …
