Physics and Astronomy Faculty Research Publications

We present new observations leading to an improved black hole mass estimate for the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 4593 as part of a reverberation-mapping campaign conducted at the MDM Observatory. Cross-correlation analysis of the Hβ emission-line light curve with the optical continuum light curve reveals an emission-line time delay of τcent=3.73+/-0.75 days. By combining this time delay with the Hβ line width, we derive a central black hole mass of MBH=(9.8+/-2.1)×106 Msolar, an improvement in precision of a factor of several over past results.

Gamma Shape Mixtures For Heavy-Tailed Distributions, Sergio Venturini, Francesca Dominici, Giovanni Parmigiani Dec 2006

Gamma Shape Mixtures For Heavy-Tailed Distributions, Sergio Venturini, Francesca Dominici, Giovanni Parmigiani

Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers

An important question in health services research is the estimation of the proportion of medical expenditures that exceed a given threshold. Typically, medical expenditures present highly skewed, heavy tailed distributions, for which a) simple variable transformations are insufficient to achieve a tractable low- dimensional parametric form and b) nonparametric methods are not efficient in estimating exceedance probabilities for large thresholds. Motivated by this context, in this paper we propose a general Bayesian approach for the estimation of tail probabilities of heavy-tailed distributions, based on a mixture of gamma distributions in which the mixing occurs over the shape parameter. This family provides …

Misogyny, Androgyny And Sexual Harassment: Sex Discrimination In A Gender-Deconstructed World, Meredith Render Dec 2006

Misogyny, Androgyny And Sexual Harassment: Sex Discrimination In A Gender-Deconstructed World, Meredith Render

Faculty Scholarship

Understanding sexual harassment as a form of discrimination “because of sex” has grown increasingly difficult as our understandings of both gender and sex have grown richer and more complex. This piece offers a new descriptive model for understanding gender bias in the context of sexual harassment law. The piece argues that two separate sets of ideas about gender have intersected to produce a new picture of gender “equality”: one that is separated from a binary model of men and women, but that nonetheless continues to disadvantage women as compared to men. The paper refers to this idea as the androcentric-assimilation …

Stuart Chase And Red Scare #2, 1946-1954, Richard Vangermeersch

Special Collections (Miscellaneous)

I have written an academic piece, “The Marking of Stuart Chase As a ‘Red Accountant’--An Epic (1917-1921)” on Stuart Chase (SC) and Red Scare #1, 1917-1921. The current piece is a much more casual type writing and, hopefully, will be a part of the SC website. My purpose in this piece is to illustrate how SC was smeared in the Reece Committee Report of 1954 without any possibility of retort before the Committee. This piece might inspire a much more academic work on the Reece Committee--a rich topic indeed. This piece also shows that SC was a marked man by …

Perceived Source Credibility Of Local Television News: The Impact Of Television Form And Presence, Cheryl C. Bracken

Communication Faculty Publications

An increasing number of local news stations are producing and broadcasting their newscasts in high-definition television (HDTV), but to date there has not been an investigation of audience perceptions of news in high definition. This study presents the results from an experiment investigating the influence of television form (image quality and field of view) on presence and audiences' perceptions of source credibility for news anchors and local news. The results demonstrate that improved image quality (HDTV) has a positive influence on audience perceptions of source credibility and the overall credibility of newscasts. Implications are discussed.

Leveraging Workplace Diversity In Organizations, Alison M. Konrad

Organization Management Journal

Research identifies several substantial barriers to the building of good working relationships among diverse cultural groups, and diversity must be managed if organizations are to attain the benefits promised by the business case for diversity. Many organizations have created diversity initiatives to address the demographic changes in the labor force and customer base, but few have achieved the goal of developing a truly multicultural organization. This article tracks best practices for managing diversity as well as future trends managers should prepare for. Managing diversity successfully requires a long-term commitment, and research suggests that employees respond well to diversity best practices …

Effective Empowerment In Organizations, Gary A. Yukl, Wendy S. Baker Dec 2006

Effective Empowerment In Organizations, Gary A. Yukl, Wendy S. Baker

Organization Management Journal

Psychological empowerment is the perception that workers can help determine their own work roles, accomplish meaningful work, and influence important decisions. Empowerment has been studied from different perspectives, including employee perceptions, leadership behaviors, and management programs. Despite positive rhetoric, programs designed to increase empowerment seldom achieve the benefits promised. Inconclusive and seemingly contradictory outcomes stem from the fact that few companies give employees significant control and access to management information. A half century of research suggests that empowerment strategies can offer real benefits. We outline facilitating conditions for effective empowerment, including characteristics of organizations, leaders, employees, and the work itself.

Pitching To The Home Shopping Network: An Exercise In Opportunity Assessment And Personal Selling, Kimberly A. Eddleston, John H. Friar, Edmund Clark

Organization Management Journal

The purpose of this exercise is to help students of entrepreneurship understand opportunity assessment and the personal selling process. After watching a short video about the challenges and opportunities of launching a product on the Home Shopping Network (video is optional), students are asked to identify a unique product that could be successfully sold on the Home Shopping Network (HSN). Students are then required to pitch their product to the class demonstrating how their product suits HSN’s requirements, meets customer needs, and can be personally sold effectively to the network’s audience. By participating in this exercise students will experience the …

Functional Trait Niches Of North American Lotic Insects: Traits-Based Ecological Applications In Light Of Phylogenetic Relationships, N. Leroy Poff, Julian D. Olden, Nicole K.M. Vieira, Debra S. Finn, Mark P. Simmons, Boris C. Kondratieff

College of Natural and Applied Sciences

The use of species traits to characterize the functional composition of benthic invertebrate communities has become well established in the ecological literature. This approach holds much potential for predicting changes of both species and species assemblages along environmental gradients in terms of traits that are sensitive to local environmental conditions. Further, in the burgeoning field of biomonitoring, a functional approach provides a predictive basis for understanding community-level responses along gradients of environmental alteration caused by humans. Despite much progress in recent years, the full potential of the functional traits-based approach is currently limited by several factors, both conceptual and methodological. …

Fracture Of The Scapula With Intrathoracic Penetration In A Skeletally Mature Patient, Cary C. Schwartzbach, Hani Seoudi, Amy E. Ross, Kimberly M. Hendershot, Linda Robinson, Alireza Maekzadeh Dec 2006

Fracture Of The Scapula With Intrathoracic Penetration In A Skeletally Mature Patient, Cary C. Schwartzbach, Hani Seoudi, Amy E. Ross, Kimberly M. Hendershot, Linda Robinson, Alireza Maekzadeh

Department of Surgery Faculty Publications

To our knowledge, intrathoracic displacement of a fractured scapula has only been described in two reports involving adolescents1,2. We present the case of a skeletally mature adult with a scapular fracture that penetrated the thoracic cage without causing a pneumothorax. We speculate as to how the adult scapula can deform in a manner consistent with this rare injury. As the patient had advanced Alzheimer disease, the family consented to the publication of data concerning this case.

An Eccentric Hot Jupiter Orbiting The Subgiant Hd 185269, John Asher Johnson, Geoffrey W. Marcy, Debra A. Fischer, Gregory W. Henry, Jason T. Wright, Howard Isaacson, Chris Mccarthy

Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

We report the detection of a Jupiter-mass planet in a 6.838 day orbit around the 1.28 M☉ subgiant HD 185269. The eccentricity of HD 185269b (e = 0.30) is unusually large compared to other planets within 0.1 AU of their stars. Photometric observations demonstrate that the star is constant to ±0.0001 mag on the radial velocity period, strengthening our interpretation of a planetary companion. This planet was detected as part of our radial velocity survey of evolved stars located on the subgiant branch of the H-R diagram—also known as the Hertzsprung gap. These stars, which have masses between 1.2 and …

Did The Founding Fathers Do "A Heckuva Job"? Constitutional Authorization For The Use Of Federal Troops To Prevent The Loss Of A Major American City, Michael Greenberger

Schmooze 'tickets'

As the one year anniversary of the landfall of Hurricane Katrina on the Gulf Coast passed, the highly critical reports of the Bush Administration's mismanagement of the response to that catastrophe continued to mount. Central to the criticism of the Administration was its indecisiveness in deploying military assets to rescue and protect Gulf Coast citizens overwhelmed by one of the country's worst natural disasters. The President failed to act because of a perceived lack of statutory and constitutional authority to override the Louisiana Governor's refusal to allow the Federal government to have ultimate control over the deployment of Federal troops …

Data Management Plans: Stages, Components, And Activities, Abbas S. Tavakoli, Kirby Jackson, Linda Moneyham, Kenneth D. Phillips, Carolyn Murdaugh, Gene Meding

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

Data management strategies have become increasingly important as new computer technologies allow for larger and more complex data sets to be analyzed easily. As a consequence, data management has become a specialty requiring specific skills and knowledge. Many new investigators have no formal training in management of data sets. This paper describes common basic strategies critical to the management of data as applied to a data set from a longitudinal study. The stages of data management are identified. Moreover, key components and strategies, at each stage are described.

Inclusion Models In Elementary Physical Education, Wendy Storm Dec 2006

Inclusion Models In Elementary Physical Education, Wendy Storm

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Over the last 30 years the number of disabled students being placed in regular education settings has increased dramatically, as has the severity of their disabilities (Greenwood & French, 2000). With the integration of students into regular education classrooms, practitioners are challenged to provide adequate supports to insure beneficial learning environments. According to Public Law 105-17 all students must be provided elementary physical education (pecentral.org). The law does not distinguish between students who are classified as "“special education students" and those who are classified as general education students. This study investigates the development and implementation of inclusion practices for special …
