Addressing Cheating And Workload Characterization In Online Games, Christopher Chambers Jan 2006

Addressing Cheating And Workload Characterization In Online Games, Christopher Chambers

Dissertations and Theses

The Internet has enabled the popular pastime of playing video games to grow rapidly by connecting game players in disparate locations. However, with popularity have come the two challenges of hosting a large number of users and detecting cheating among users. For reasons of control, security, and ease of development, the most popular system for hosting on-line games is the client server architecture. This is also the most expensive and least scalable architecture for the game publisher, which drives hosting costs upwards with the success of the game. In addition to the expense of hosting, as a particular game grows …

Tortured Legal Ethics: The Role Of The Government Advisor In The War On Terror, Jessica Radack Jan 2006

Tortured Legal Ethics: The Role Of The Government Advisor In The War On Terror, Jessica Radack

University of Colorado Law Review

The so-called "torture memos" beg for a re-examination of government lawyers' ethical obligations, especially when acting as advisors, not advocates. This article explores the two major models of government lawyers' ethics: the "agency" approach, which stresses the duties of loyalty, zeal and confidentiality and disfavors attorney interference with client goals, and the "public interest" approach, which places greater weight on fairness and justice, and wants lawyers to weigh in on the wisdom and morality of what their clients are considering. This article argues that an Eighth Amendment analysis should be employed to determine what constitutes a "morally perilous question. " …

Intimate Homicide: Gender And Crime Control, 1880-1920, Carolyn B. Ramsey Jan 2006

Intimate Homicide: Gender And Crime Control, 1880-1920, Carolyn B. Ramsey

University of Colorado Law Review

The received wisdom, among feminists and others, is that historically the criminal justice system tolerated male violence against women. This article dramatically revises feminist understanding of the legal history of public responses to intimate homicide by showing that, in both the eastern and the western United States, men accused of killing their intimates often received stern punishment, including the death penalty, whereas women charged with similar crimes were treated leniently. Although no formal "battered woman's defense" existed in the late 1800s and early 1900s, courts and juries implicitly recognized one-and even extended it to abandoned women who killed their unfaithful …

Toward A New Horizontal Federalism: Interstate Water Management In The Great Lakes Region, Noah D. Hall Jan 2006

Toward A New Horizontal Federalism: Interstate Water Management In The Great Lakes Region, Noah D. Hall

University of Colorado Law Review

This article presents a new model for environmental policy, called cooperative horizontal federalism. The cooperative horizontal federalism approach utilizes a constitutional mechanism for states to bind themselves to common substantive and procedural environmental protection standards, implemented individually with regional resources and enforcement. Here, the concept of the cooperative horizontal federalism model is illustrated through the recently proposed Great Lakes-St. Lawrence River Basin Water Resources Compact. Under this proposed compact, the eight Great Lakes states would cooperatively manage the world's largest freshwater resource under common minimum standards, which are then incorporated into state law and implemented individually. This cooperative horizontal federalism …

A Tabu Search Algorithm To Minimize The Makespan For The Unrelated Parallel Machines Scheduling Problem With Setup Times, Magdy Helal, Ghaith Rabadi, Ameer Al-Salem Jan 2006

A Tabu Search Algorithm To Minimize The Makespan For The Unrelated Parallel Machines Scheduling Problem With Setup Times, Magdy Helal, Ghaith Rabadi, Ameer Al-Salem

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Faculty Publications

In this paper we propose a tabu search implementation to solve the unrelated parallel machines scheduling problem with sequence- and machine- dependent setup times to minimize the schedules makespan. The problem is NP-hard and finding an optimal solution efficiently is unlikely. Therefore, heuristic techniques are more appropriate to find near-optimal solutions. The proposed tabu search algorithm uses two phases of perturbation schemes: the intra-machine perturbation, which optimizes the sequence of jobs on the machines, and the inter-machine perturbation, which balances the assignment of the jobs to the machines. We compare the proposed algorithm to an existing one that addressed the …

A Study Of Caenorhabditis Elegans Tissue Inhibitor Of Metalloproteinases, Tamara. Paul Jan 2006

A Study Of Caenorhabditis Elegans Tissue Inhibitor Of Metalloproteinases, Tamara. Paul

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Tissue Inhibitors of Metalloproteinases (TIMPs) are produced by a wide variety of cell types. Similar to matrixins, the expression of TIMPs in the tissue is also controlled during tissue remodeling and physiological conditions to maintain a balance in the metabolism of extracellular matrix. Disruption of this balance can result in diseases associated with uncontrolled turnover of matrix, such as arthritis, cancer, and cardiovascular disease. Some of the biological processes TIMPs participate in include: regulation of cell morphology and organ morphogenesis, inhibition of angiogenesis, steroidogenesis, and tissue remodeling. One major function of TIMPs is inhibition of Matrix Metaloproteinase (MMPs). This project …

"The Show Must Go On": A Caring Inquiry Into The Meaning Of Widowhood And Health For Older Indian Widows, A. Judith Czerenda Jan 2006

"The Show Must Go On": A Caring Inquiry Into The Meaning Of Widowhood And Health For Older Indian Widows, A. Judith Czerenda

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

India, a country in transition, is home to over 33 million widows. Historically, Indian widowhood has been associated with victimization and vulnerability. Using Caring Inquiry, a phenomenological-hermeneutic methodology having caring at its center, this study explores the meaning of health and widowhood to 14 older Hindu widows living in urban South India. Shifting attitudes toward widowhood reflect the rapid changes occurring in India as demonstrated by six metathemes (Drawing From Within, Seeking Help and Guidance, Accepting the Role, Challenging Tradition, Serving Others, Finding Companionship) that emerged from study data. The common need to move on with life, articulated by one …

Adding Insult To Injury: Development And Initial Validation Ofthe Partner-Directed Insults Scale, Lucas D. Schipper Jan 2006

Adding Insult To Injury: Development And Initial Validation Ofthe Partner-Directed Insults Scale, Lucas D. Schipper

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

I present the development and initial validation of a new measure designed to assess the specific content of insults used by men against their intimate partners. I used feedback from battered women, along with a review of the relevant literature, to identify specific insults for inclusion in the Partner-Directed Insults Scale (PDIS) (Preliminary Study). I administered the PDIS to a sample of United States participants (Study 1) and a sample of New Zealand participants (Study 2), allowing for a cross-national investigation of the specific insults that men use to derogate their partners. The results demonstrate the practical need for such …

"They Ain't No Spring Chickens!": A Cultural Analysis Of Representations Of Older Women In Everybody Loves Raymond., Trudy Mercadai-Sabbagh Jan 2006

"They Ain't No Spring Chickens!": A Cultural Analysis Of Representations Of Older Women In Everybody Loves Raymond., Trudy Mercadai-Sabbagh

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

This thesis examines how prime time television assigns traditional gender roles for older women through a case study of the award-winning sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond, and strives to answer questions raised in regard to age/gender role representations. This study seeks, as well, to explore the ways in which the representations of older women on television and media articles about these television texts construct reality, and the extent to which prime time television reinforces stereotypical " realities" of older women. Though traditional effects theory looks at the ways in which individuals are influenced- or imitaterole models presented in the media, by …

The study suggests that designers of training for …

An Empirical Study Of Ordinal And Non-Ordinal Classification Algorithms For Intrusion Detection In Wlans, Leelakrishnan Gopalakrishnan Jan 2006

An Empirical Study Of Ordinal And Non-Ordinal Classification Algorithms For Intrusion Detection In Wlans, Leelakrishnan Gopalakrishnan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Ordinal classification refers to an important category of real world problems, in which the attributes of the instances to be classified and the classes are linearly ordered. Many applications of machine learning frequently involve situations exhibiting an order among the different categories represented by the class attribute. In ordinal classification the class value is converted into a numeric quantity and regression algorithms are applied to the transformed data. The data is later translated back into a discrete class value in a postprocessing step. This thesis is devoted to an empirical study of ordinal and non-ordinal classification algorithms for intrusion detection …

American Cultural Constructions Of The Gynecological Experience, Julie L. Provenzano Jan 2006

American Cultural Constructions Of The Gynecological Experience, Julie L. Provenzano

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

This thesis research asks why many American women feel uncomfortable going to the gynecologist. In order to investigate this phenomenon, thirty-one women were interviewed regarding their experiences at the gynecologist and their perceptions of their genitals. Using a medical anthropology framework to determine what factors facilitate negative feelings associated with gynecological examinations, the participants' responses were analyzed with regards to cultural influences. It was found that a paradox exists between American cultural constructions of women's genitals and the biomedical structure of a gynecological examination. Since American women are culturally ingrained with a notion of privacy and sexuality regarding their genitals, …

An Investigation Of Foundational Instructional Principles In International Mathematics Classrooms: An Lsd Analysis Of Tjmss Video Data, Desmond W. Rodney Jan 2006

An Investigation Of Foundational Instructional Principles In International Mathematics Classrooms: An Lsd Analysis Of Tjmss Video Data, Desmond W. Rodney

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The central purpose of this study is to investigate whether cross national classroom video recordings reflect foundational principles of instruction as identified by lSD theorists. Principles of instruction remain true regardless of program or context when implemented by appropriate instructional systems design procedures. These theoretical elements however, require deeper empirical investigation in authentic classroom settings. This study posits that foundational principles are observable in non lSD systematized settings. Further it suggests that they are represented differently in classroom video recordings across countries, based on their performance level on a standardized assessment. The study shows inter alia that, (1) Instructional principles …

Analysis Of Professional Development In Technology For Elementary School Teachers, Sarah T. Meltzer Jan 2006

Analysis Of Professional Development In Technology For Elementary School Teachers, Sarah T. Meltzer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The identification of effective practices is of significant interest to school administrators, faculty, and staff planning and implementing professional development initiatives in technology. This study identified recommended practices for professional development in technology in elementary schools and determined if current practices reflected those recommendations. Studies by Wenglinsky (1998) for the Educational Testing Service reported the effective use of technology by classroom teachers has a positive impact on student performance. More recent studies frequently indicate teachers are not being trained to use technology effectively; and consequently, limited integration of technology in the classroom is taking place (Catchings, 2000; Howery, 2001; Johnson, …

Analysis Of Factors Affecting The Sound Generated By Airboats, Aquiles. Perez Jan 2006

Analysis Of Factors Affecting The Sound Generated By Airboats, Aquiles. Perez

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

This study presents an experimental and analytical investigation of the factors that affect the sound generated by airboats as well as the interaction among these factors; an airboat travels on water and wet land by means of an air pusher propeller attached to an internal combustion engine. These analyses show that the engine and propeller RPM are the main contributors of sound. The contribution of the engine is a tonal sound that is reduced by using a muffler. The sound generated by the propeller is a flapping sound clearly identified at high revolutions (over 1800 RPM). Above mid-range speeds, the …

Between Home And School: Guatemalan Maya Students And Cultural Gender Roles In South Florida, Kristin L. Robbins Jan 2006

Between Home And School: Guatemalan Maya Students And Cultural Gender Roles In South Florida, Kristin L. Robbins

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Second-generation Guatemalan Maya children and adolescents who were born in Palm Beach County had to balance two cultures. As children of Guatemalan Maya parents, these youths belonged to Guatemalan Maya households--but many of their other roles in the United States, particularly their roles as students, involved the wider American culture. As such, they endured many of the same acculturation challenges that first generation immigrants do. They often had to choose between fulfilling student roles, family roles, and contrasting cultural beliefs and values, and negotiate shifting cultural, familial, community, and gender dynamics. My primary research interest was to understand how home, …

Census Of Nonhuman Primate Populations Of Comuna El Pital, In South Central Ecuador, Rose M. Hores

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Ecuador is home to several Neotropical primates. Some areas, and the primate fauna they support, remain little studied, as is El Pital of south-central Ecuador within Machalilla National Park. I conducted a systematic census between May--August, 2005, including some behavioral data. I documented 20 capuchins (Cebus albifrons ssp.) in three groups and 198 mantled howlers (Alouatta palliata) in 15 groups. All were cited between 2-11 kilometers from habitations. Preliminary data suggested that a Cebus monkey, previously undocumented in the area, may inhabit the park. By recording current population numbers of nonhuman primates, future research may disclose if, over time, National …

Bioactive Terpene Production Associated With Caribbean Gorgonians From The Genera Pseudopterogorgia And Eunicea: Discovery Of A Sustainable Production Method, Nealie C. Newberger Jan 2006

Bioactive Terpene Production Associated With Caribbean Gorgonians From The Genera Pseudopterogorgia And Eunicea: Discovery Of A Sustainable Production Method, Nealie C. Newberger

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Research directed toward renewable, non-destructive sources of bioactive marine derived compounds, is becoming more important everyday. Marine soft corals known as sea whips are a prolific source of such biologically active compounds. One particular organism, Eunicea fusca, possesses diterpene arabinose glycosides with potent antiinflammatory activity that rival the industry standard indomethicin. Fuscocide B is known to inhibit phorbol myristate acetate (PMA)-induced ear edema in murine models, is a minor secondary metabolite and it is therefore difficult to acquire in large quantities. Alternatively, fuscol and eunicol, are known to have similar antiinflammatory activity and are major secondary metabolites which are structurally …

Class-Based Search System In Unstructured Peer-To-Peer Networks, Juncheng. Huang Jan 2006

Class-Based Search System In Unstructured Peer-To-Peer Networks, Juncheng. Huang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Efficient searching is one of the important design issues in peer-to-peer (P2P) networks. Among various searching techniques, semantic-based searching has drawn significant attention recently. Gnutella-like efficient searching system (GES) [29] is such a system. GES derives node vector , a semantic summary of all documents on a node based on vector space model (VSM). The node-based topology adaptation algorithm and search protocol are then discussed. However, when there are many categories of documents at each node, the node vector representation may be inaccurate. We extend the idea of GES and present a class-based search system (CSS). It makes use of …

Combined Effects Of Low Salinity And Dermo On Oysters From The St. Lucie Estuary, Krystal D. Baird Jan 2006

Combined Effects Of Low Salinity And Dermo On Oysters From The St. Lucie Estuary, Krystal D. Baird

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The viability of the eastern oyster, Crassostrea virginica, is designated as an ecological performance measure for the management of freshwater inflows to the St. Lucie Estuary, Florida. Thus, oysters derived from the St. Lucie Estuary were tested for their physiological response to stress, measured as altered condition index and RNA/DNA ratios, resulting from changes in salinity and infection by the protozoan parasite Perkinsus marinus, the agent of Dermo, a common oyster disease. Pilot studies consisted of the development of a real-time PCR-based assay for P. marinus infection, procedures to infect oysters with the pathogen by injection method and procedures for …

Coffee, Tea Or Ammo, William. Cooper Jan 2006

Coffee, Tea Or Ammo, William. Cooper

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Set during the Vietnam War, Coffee, Tea or Ammo chronicles the adventures of Bob Thomas, from his unsuccessful attempts to dodge the draft, through basic training and advanced individual training, to his service in Vietnam with an army artillery battery. On one level the narrative is impelled by Thomas's attempt to resolve the conflict between his agonistic and irenic impulses. However, the novel also relies on satire, precipitated by the bevy of unnerving characters Thomas encounters, such as a predatory homosexual drill sergeant, an oversexed lieutenant who frags another officer, a captain who keeps his identity secret from his troops …

Contexts And Circumstances Of Filicide-Suicide, Shanna L. Beasley Jan 2006

Contexts And Circumstances Of Filicide-Suicide, Shanna L. Beasley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The contexts and circumstances surrounding filicide-suicide may provide insight into parental psychology. The current studies used two Chicago homicide databases containing incident-level information on homicides committed in Chicago during the years 1965-1994 and 1870-1930. Results provide support for the following hypotheses: (1) genetic parents relative to stepparents are more likely to commit suicide following filicide, (2) filicides of multiple victims are more likely to end in the offender's suicide than are filicides of a single victim, (3) parents are more likely to commit suicide following a filicide of an older child than a younger child, (4) older parents, relative to …

Correlations Between Maxillary Sinus And Nasal Cavity Volume: An Exploratory Study Into Environmental Influences On The Human Maxillary Sinus, Lauren N. Butaric Jan 2006

Correlations Between Maxillary Sinus And Nasal Cavity Volume: An Exploratory Study Into Environmental Influences On The Human Maxillary Sinus, Lauren N. Butaric

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Previous hypotheses have suggested that maxillary sinus volume (MSV) is dependent on nasal cavity volume (NCV), and while NCV is highly correlated with climate, MSV is a passive by-product. To test these hypotheses 39 dried adult human crania from different climatic regions were examined using CT technology. MSV and NCV were regressed against each other and cranial size-variables using least squares and reduced major axis analysis. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) tests were also utilized to identify significant differences in MSV and NCV between populations. Results suggest that MSV and NCV are not significantly correlated, and while NCV scales with isometry …

Controlling Access To Physical Locations, Ana C. Desouza-Doucet Jan 2006

Controlling Access To Physical Locations, Ana C. Desouza-Doucet

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The need to secure and control access to rooms in premises has shifted from allowing some people to enter a room to giving permission to specific persons to access a room and recording who entered the room and the time they spent in it. With such need for higher security in mind, we design an access control system for controlling physical access of people to locations or to specific units in these locations. Our study gives emphasis to the organization of physical locations, including nested rooms, and the approach used to assign permission to people to access such locations. We …

Cognition And Adherence In Older Adults Undergoing Hemodialysis, Debra J. Hain Jan 2006

Cognition And Adherence In Older Adults Undergoing Hemodialysis, Debra J. Hain

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Background. Adherence to the behavioral change component of the hemodialysis regimen is difficult for many reasons; when individuals fail to adhere, the nurses often become frustrated and individuals may be labeled nonadherent leading to inappropriate interventions. As the number of older adults starting hemodialysis increases, one contributing factor to nonadherence in this population may be cognitive impairment. Objective. The overall purpose of the study was to explore differences in global cognition, in self-report cognition, and in language ability relative to adherence in a sample of older adults undergoing hemodialysis. Methods. This pilot study examined the differences in cognition and adherence …
