Seasonal Changes In The Rumen Microbial Ecology Of Muskoxen, Annie R. Crater Aug 2006

Seasonal Changes In The Rumen Microbial Ecology Of Muskoxen, Annie R. Crater

Biological Sciences

Ruminal fermentation must respond to seasonal changes in the behavior and digestive function of muskoxen (Ovibos moschatus) as intakes of food and water rise in autumn (August - October) and decline from winter to spring (November - May). Rumen temperatures were not static but instead were punctuated by decreases of as much as 13°C below the average of 39°C. Declines in rumen temperature were associated with water ingestion while gains in rumen temperature were associated with feeding. Food intake and water turnover rates were positively correlated. Direct microscopic counts of bacteria in rumen fluid decreased from 1.8 to 0.9 X …

Boiga Irregularis+ (Reptile)

Other Publications in Wildlife Management

This night-loving and tree-loving, brown tree snake (Boiga irregularis) is so secretive in its nature that it is frequently concealed on container ships and in aircraft cargo. It probably arrived on Guam after World War II in a cargo ship. Now the wetlands, coastlands and forests of Guam are bereft of nine out of twelve native bird species (and two out of eleven native lizards) due to the snakes voracious appetite. The brown tree snake is not a fussy feeder, stimulating the very real fear that it might drive yet more species to extinction.

Pigs are large omnivorous mammals with powerful bodies and coarse hairy coats. Their thick necks, wedge-shaped heads and mobile snouts are used in feeding to uproot the ground and find prey or plant material. Ecological characteristics of feral pig activity, group size and home range size should be considered in any management strategy aimed to control pig numbers or reduce their negative impact. Feral pig activity varies between different habitats and climates. High activity has been reported to occur in early morning and late afternoon in tropical climates (Diong 1982). However, in India pigs have been reported to feed nocturnally …

Polyaniline And Its Derivatives For Environmental Analysis., Atogho Jude Abia

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Electrooxidation has been used to deposit thin film polyaniline as well as its derivative - thin film poly (ortho-phenylenediamine) (POPD) and poly (meta-phenylenediamine) (PMPD) on carbon electrodes, which are subsequently used to monitor the environmental heavy metal ions (Hg2+, Pb2+ ,Cd2+) through a rather unusual "blocking" of anodic stripping for these metals. Using Hg2+ as a model, its cyclic voltammogram for a modified glassy carbon electrode with the resultant polymer shows an enhanced cathodic peak that increases linearly with the analyte ion concentration. POPD also exhibits unique selective detection for organic species. Acetaminophen and …

Determination Of Cholesterol In Foods By Flow Injection Analysis With Perroxyoxalate Chemiluminescence., Abisake Feleke

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Cholesterol is an important biological molecule with many important functions. However, high serum cholesterol is a health hazard. Thus analysis of cholesterol is important and many analytical techniques have been developed. The objectives of the proposed research are to develop an economical, rapid method for the determination of total cholesterol with good selectivity and enhanced sensitivity. For evaluation of proposed flow injection analysis with peroxyoxalate chemiluminescence (FIA-POCL) method, figures of merit such as accuracy, precision, and linear dynamic range will be assessed. The proposed procedure was then applied to the determination of total cholesterol in foods. The procedure was linear …

Crop Production For Advanced Life Support Systems, R M. Wheeler, J C. Sager

Technical Reports

The use of plants for bioregenerative life support for space missions was first studied by the US Air Force in the 1950s and 1960s. Extensive testing was also conducted from the 1960s through the 1980s by Russian researchers located at the Institute of Biophysics in Krasnoyarsk, Siberia, and the Institute for Biomedical Problems in Moscow. NASA initiated bioregenerative research in the 1960s (e.g., Hydrogenomonas) but this research did not include testing with plants until about 1980, with the start of the Controlled Ecological Life Support System (CELSS) Program. The NASA CELSS research was carried out at universities, private corporations, and …

Selection Of Dwarf Mistletoe–Infected Ponderosa Pines By Ips Species (Coleoptera, Scolytidae) In Northern Arizona, Shawn C. Kenaley, Robert L. Mathiasen, Carolyn M. Daugherty

Western North American Naturalist

Following an Ips bark beetle outbreak in 2002, mortality of ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa Douglas ex C. Lawson) was evaluated in 2 study areas infested with southwestern dwarf mistletoe (Arceuthobium vaginatum [Willd.] Presl subsp. cryptopodum [Engelm.] Hawksw. & Wiens) in the Coconino and Tonto National Forests, Arizona. A pairwise comparison of dwarf mistletoe ratings for live and dead ponderosa pines was conducted to determine whether dead ponderosa pines had higher dwarf mistletoe ratings than pines that were not attacked. In both study areas, dead ponderosa pines had significantly higher dwarf mistletoe ratings, indicating an association between the severity …

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship of behavior subscales (inattention and impulsivity/overactivity), grade, and gender to unintentional injury risk and risk-taking behaviors among primary school-age students. The participants included the parents, guardians, and teachers of 109 primary school-age students. The students represented 1st - 3rd grades (n= 61) and 4th - 5th grades (n= 48). Parents completed three questionnaires including socio-demographics, Injury History Questionnaire, and Injury Behavior Checklist scale measures. Teachers reported each child's classroom and playground behavior on the Teacher Disruptive Behavior Disorder measure. Regression analyses revealed that impulsivity/overactivity and gender were significantly related to …

Bridging The Literature Gap With Age-Appropriate Writing For Middle School Boys And Their Teachers, Gary K. Hardy Aug 2006

Bridging The Literature Gap With Age-Appropriate Writing For Middle School Boys And Their Teachers, Gary K. Hardy

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Current research suggests that middle school aged boys are not involved in reading as much as middle school aged girls. Researchers have identified several reasons behind the findings. The first possible reason is a lack of reading interest from boys. The second possible reason is a lack of age appropriate material targeted toward the interests of boys. The third possible reason is an influx of gender-neutral reading material. This project attempts to bridge the gap by providing middle school boys with an age appropriate manuscript. The project also includes a classroom guide which provides teachers with ideas and reproducible materials.

Ferritin: Mechanistic Studies And Electron Transfer Properties, Bo Zhang Aug 2006

Ferritin: Mechanistic Studies And Electron Transfer Properties, Bo Zhang

Theses and Dissertations

Ferritins are ubiquitous iron storage proteins in living systems. Although much is known about the iron deposition process in ferritin and a mechanism has been developed, several important issues still remain unknown. One lingering question is the less than stoichiometric quantities of hydrogen peroxide detected in previous studies on animal ferritins. Extensive experimental data on identifying the species in competition for peroxide equivalents point to a surprising conclusion that H2O2 generated in the ferroxidase reaction is consumed by amine buffers that are commonly employed in in vitro ferritin studies, while non-nitrogen containing buffers, such as acetate, phosphate, and carbonate, do …

Interaction Of Ice Storms And Management Practices On Current Carbon Sequestration In Forests With Potential Mitigation Under Future Co2 Atmosphere, Heather R. Mccarthy, Ram Oren, Hyun-Seok Kim, Kurt H. Johnsen, Chris Maier, Seth G. Pritchard, Micheal Davis Aug 2006

Interaction Of Ice Storms And Management Practices On Current Carbon Sequestration In Forests With Potential Mitigation Under Future Co2 Atmosphere, Heather R. Mccarthy, Ram Oren, Hyun-Seok Kim, Kurt H. Johnsen, Chris Maier, Seth G. Pritchard, Micheal Davis

Faculty Publications

[1] Ice storms are disturbance events with potential impacts on carbon sequestration. Common forest management practices, such as fertilization and thinning, can change wood and stand properties and thus may change vulnerability to ice storm damage. At the same time, increasing atmospheric CO2 levels may also influence ice storm vulnerability. Here we show that a nonintensively managed pine plantation experienced a ∼250 g C m−2 reduction in living biomass during a single storm, equivalent to ∼30% of the annual net ecosystem carbon exchange of this ecosystem. Drawing on weather and damage survey data from the entire storm cell, …

Background: With the completion of the genome sequence for rice (Oryza sativa L.), the focus of rice genomics research has shifted to the comparison of the rice genome with genomes of other species for gene cloning, breeding, and evolutionary studies. The genus Oryza includes 23 species that shared a common ancestor 8–10 million years ago making this an ideal model for investigations into the processes underlying domestication, as many of the Oryza species are still undergoing domestication. This study integrates high-throughput, hybridization-based markers with BAC end sequence and fingerprint data to construct physical maps of rice chromosome 1 orthologues in …

The Purpose Of Child Support, Ira M. Ellman Aug 2006

The Purpose Of Child Support, Ira M. Ellman

ExpressO

What is the appropriate amount of child support to require in particular cases? How should we take account, if at all, of subsequent events such as either parent’s remarriage? It seems obvious that the answers to such questions ought to turn on our purpose in requiring support payments in the first place. But while fixing the amount of child support can be politically contentious, and has attracted the attention of partisans on both sides of the gender gap, the literature contains no systematic examination of support rules in light of their underlying policy purpose. This article fills that gap. It …
