The Wooster Voice (Wooster, Oh), 2006-09-08, Wooster Voice Editors
The Voice: 2001-2011
This edition of the College of Wooster student run newspaper was published on September 8 of 2006, and it is eight pages long. Incoming freshman will be paired up with their roommates through the Myers-Briggs personality test. Many students who stored their stuff in the Holden Hall basement over the summer arrived back to campus to their clothes ruined from a flood. The construction of Gault Manor has been postponed until 2007. Brian Frederico's article on page three urges people to vote. Molly Lehman writes on online registration. Page four is dedicated to the reopening of Kauke after renovations. An …

A Defense Of Structural Injunctive Remedies In South African Law, Danielle E. Hirsch
A Defense Of Structural Injunctive Remedies In South African Law, Danielle E. Hirsch
ExpressO
This Article argues that the use of structural injunction remedies by South African courts is appropriate, and, in light of demonstrated government inaction, often necessary in order to give meaning to the protection of socio-economic rights, which is mandated by their Constitution. The Article draws upon numerous United States judicial decisions where structural injunctions have been successfully implemented to address systemic institutional inaction and violations of the equal protection and due process clauses of the United States Constitution. In numerous instances, the South African government has not acted to effectively give meaning to the socio-economic rights which were broadly declared …

Sorghum Flour As A Substitute For Wheat In El Salvador Village Bakeries, Intsormil
Sorghum Flour As A Substitute For Wheat In El Salvador Village Bakeries, Intsormil
INTSORMIL Impacts and Bulletins
Grain sorghum is generating new excitement on the health food scene. Why? For one reason, flour milled from grain sorghum has NO GLUTEN! That’s important to those people with an intolerance to gluten-containing products (Celiac disease). Sorghum is high in antioxidants (cancer prevention) and insoluble fiber (slowly digested), with relatively small amounts of soluble fiber. The protein and starch in sorghum endosperm are more slowly digested than other cereals. The slower rate of digestibility of sorghum products may be beneficial to diabetics.
So how is sorghum flour used in baking? It can be substituted for wheat, rice or soybean flour …

Ethnobotanical Leaflets
An ethnobotanical exploration carried out during the years 2001 and 2002 in the Village Barali Kass and its allied areas, District Kotli Azad Kashmir, Pakistan, revealed that 66 species were used as folk medicine for the curing of several diseases. The data was collected from the local peoples including reliable hakims (local doctors), physicians and old villagers. Plant species with their botanical names, local names, status and folk medicinal uses have been collected and enlisted.

MIIR Faculty Research
Background
Diabetes mellitus is an important risk factor for increased vein graft failure after bypass surgery. However, the cellular and molecular mechanism(s) underlying vessel attrition in this population remain largely unexplored. Recent reports have suggested that the pathological remodeling of vein grafts may be mediated by mechanically-induced activation of the mitogen activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling pathways and the MAPK-related induction of caspase-3 activity. On the basis of these findings, we hypothesized that diabetes may be associated with alterations in how veins "sense" and "respond" to altered mechanical loading.

Inferior venae cavae (IVC) from the non-diabetic lean (LNZ) and …

Integrative Physiology and Athletic Training Faculty Publications
The primary purpose of this project was to study exercise-induced leukocyte cytokine mRNA expression. Changes in plasma cytokine levels and blood leukocyte mRNA expression for interleukin-6 (IL-6), IL-8, IL- 10, and IL-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1Ra) were measured in 12 athletes following 2 h of intensive cycling (64% Wattsmax) while ingesting a carbohydrate or placebo beverage (randomized and double blinded). Blood samples were collected 30 min preexercise and immediately and 1 h postexercise. Carbohydate compared with placebo ingestion attenuated exercise-induced changes in plasma cortisol (8.8% vs. 62%, respectively), epinephrine (–9.2% vs. 138%), IL-6 (10-fold vs. 40-fold), IL-10 (8.9-fold vs. …

Office of the Dean (CAFES) Scholarship
Master's degree recipients from the College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences (CAFES) at Cal Poly State University were surveyed to assess 1) their satisfaction with the M.S. program, and 2) the extent to which key learning outcomes were attained. Emphasis was placed on the graduate's perception of the value of their thesis or creative project experience in developing technical competency and skills in communication, critical thinking, problem-solving, leadership, and decision making.
CAFES M.S. alumni were generally positive in their perception of the graduate program, though written comments indicated dissatisfaction with various program aspects among some graduates. Most respondents felt …

Nutrition In The Critically Ill Patient, Jane M. Gervasio
Nutrition In The Critically Ill Patient, Jane M. Gervasio
Scholarship and Professional Work – COPHS
Critical illness presents with the classic response to stress, including hypermetabolism and increased catabolism, resulting in a negative energy and nitrogen balance. These harmful events initiate the immunological response, starting with the systemic inflammatory response syndrome, which, if not resolved, may lead to multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS). Furthermore, patients who do not develop early MODS manifest a compensation anti-inflammatory response syndrome, which suppresses immunity and predisposes the patient to sepsis, thereby increasing the risk of late MODS and ultimately death. The use of specialized nutrition support, including enteral nutrition (EN) and parenteral nutrition (PN), has been initiated in an …
Nutrition And Stroke Prevention, J. David Spence
Nutrition And Stroke Prevention, J. David Spence
Department of Medicine Publications
Nutrition is much more important in prevention of stroke than is appreciated by most physicians. The powerful effects of statin drugs in lowering the levels of fasting cholesterol, combined with an unbalanced focus on fasting lipids (as opposed to postprandial fat and oxidative stress), have led many physicians and patients to believe that diet is relatively unimportant. Because the statins can lower fasting lipids by ≈50% to 60%, and a low-fat diet only lowers fasting cholesterol by ≈5% to 10%, this error is perhaps understandable. However, a Cretan Mediterranean diet, which is high in beneficial oils, whole grains, fruits, and …
