Using The Balanced Scorecard For Ranch Planning And Management:Setting Strategy And Measuring Performance, Barry H. Dunn, Roger N. Gates, Jack Davis, Agustin Arzeno
SDSU Extension Circulars
The key to business success—whether operating a ranch or a Fortune 500 company—lies in management and planning. It’s the ability to have foresight, to carefully evaluate and choose appropriate new concepts and technologies, and to implement a well thought- out plan that complements all aspects of the business. The highly-respected former CEO and chairman of General Electric Jack Welch put it this way: Good business leaders create a vision, articulate the vision, passionately own the vision, and relentlessly drive it to completion. How does that description apply to you? Are you a visionary business leader for your ranch enterprise? Or …

The Effect Of Early Vs Normal Calf Weaning On Feedlot Performance And Herd Management: A Northern Plains Case Study, Scott Fausti, Douglas Landblom, Patricia Johnson, Martin Beutler, Roger N. Gates, Robin R. Salverson, Hubert H. Patterson, Staeve I. Paisley
Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)
A two-year study of early vs. normal weaning of steer calves was conducted in the western Dakotas in 2003-04. Economic and statistical analysis of calf feedlot performance and carcass quality was conducted. The analysis concludes that early weaning improves feedlot production efficiency, and reduces per day and per pound feedlot production costs. However, early weaned steers are lighter at slaughter; therefore, early weaning lowers carcass revenue relative to normal weaning. The early weaning effect on the profitability of retaining calves through the feedlot stage was not statistically significant. However, statistical analysis indicates that early weaning does have a positive effect …

Diapause In Aquatic Invertebrates:What's Known And What's Next In Research And Medical Application?, Victor R. Alekseev, Jiang-Shiou Hwang, Mei-Hui Tseng
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Dormancy is a profound and ancient adaptation found in a wide spectrum of plants and animals of all habitats. In diapause the switch between active and dormant states is driven by hormonal mechanism that usually includes a photoperiodic pace-maker. Temperature, food limitation and some other stress factors as well are shown as driven by diapause induction in aquatic invertebrates. In the last decade, diapause studies from a wide variety of topics have demonstrated that diapause switch mechanisms may be developed to create novel applications in biotechnology. Resting eggs accumulated in the surface lake sediments represent a “bank” of zooplankton species …
The African Bushmeat Crisis: A Case For Global Partnership, Andrew Elliott Kohn, Heather E. Eves
The African Bushmeat Crisis: A Case For Global Partnership, Andrew Elliott Kohn, Heather E. Eves
ExpressO
Across Central Africa a commercial, unsustainable, and largely illegal hunting and trade in wildlife for meat has expanded in recent years causing immediate threat to countless wildlife populations and species. Currently, multi-national agreements and government initiatives created to address the bushmeat crisis in the region are unable to halt the extensive destruction to the area’s unique biodiversity . Although many of these agreements strongly support addressing the bushmeat crisis, they lack the resources and capacity to be fully implemented. Strong U.S. engagement in a global partnership, arising from intensive, complete, and wide-ranging bipartisan commitment would greatly enhance existing international biodiversity …

This report is one of many attempts to quantify and track Cal Poly’s movement toward a “greener” campus. Efforts are underway to reduce reliance on automobile commuting to campus, to promote energy and water conservation, to recycle solid waste, and to incorporate “green” products and practices in new buildings and in campus operations. This report looks at measures of sustainability along several parameters. The results not only highlight various successes, but also suggest areas in which additional efforts are needed. We intend to update this report biennially.

Background
Preliminary evidence suggests that the physical environment and transportation are associated with youth physical activity levels. Only a few studies have examined the association of physical environmental factors on walking and bicycling to school. Therefore, the purpose of this study was (1) to examine the test-retest reliability of a survey designed for youth to assess perceptions of physical environmental factors (e.g. safety, aesthetics, facilities near the home) and transportation, and (2) to describe the associations of these perceptions with both physical activity and active transport to school.
Methods
Test and retest surveys, administered a median of 12 days later, …

Biopolitics At The Bedside: Proxy Wars And Feeding Tubes, Joshua E. Perry
Biopolitics At The Bedside: Proxy Wars And Feeding Tubes, Joshua E. Perry
ExpressO
In the aftermath of Terri Schiavo’s dramatic final weeks of life, George Annas speculated that proponents of “culture of life” politics might “now view [themselves] as strong enough to generate new laws . . . to require that incompetent patients be kept alive with artificially delivered fluids and nutrition.” Indeed, Professor Annas’ prescience has been demonstrated by the post-Schiavo introduction in two dozen state legislatures of over fifty different bills making it more onerous to remove a patient’s artificial nutrition and hydration (ANH). With minor exception, however, most of the proposed legislation has either stalled or been watered down, prompting …

Ethical Pharmaceuticals? A Deeper Look At The Ethics In Pharmaceutical Public Relations, William M. Walsh
Ethical Pharmaceuticals? A Deeper Look At The Ethics In Pharmaceutical Public Relations, William M. Walsh
Theses and Dissertations
This study takes a deeper look inside the ethics of pharmaceutical Public Relations within marketing campaigns. More specifically, the researcher performed case studies on the ethically questionable marketing campaigns of Fen-phen and Vioxx and compared that data with data collected from focus groups composed of Rowan University graduate Public Relations Alumni.
The case studies were performed through primary and secondary research of the campaigns conducted for Fen-phen and Vioxx. The data was then used to reconstruct the two campaigns. The focus group data was collected from three focus groups, each with four members, and all data was tabulated and then …

The Use And Misuse Of Disclosure As A Regulatory System, Paula J. Dalley
The Use And Misuse Of Disclosure As A Regulatory System, Paula J. Dalley
ExpressO
Over the past several decades, legislators and regulators have increasingly turned to disclosure schemes, rather than substantive regulation, to accomplish regulatory goals. Most of these schemes are either expressly or impliedly based on the disclosure-based regulatory system established by the securities acts, which is primarily intended to provide information to traders in an established market and thereby to enhance the operation of the market. A secondary purpose of the securities acts is to alter the behavior of firms and individuals through the operation of the market. Other disclosure schemes usually have similar purposes, but they rarely operate in a market …

Conditional Likelihood Methods For Haplotype-Based Association Analysis Using Matched Case-Control Data, Jinbo Chen, Carmen Rodriguez
Conditional Likelihood Methods For Haplotype-Based Association Analysis Using Matched Case-Control Data, Jinbo Chen, Carmen Rodriguez
UPenn Biostatistics Working Papers
Genetic epidemiologists routinely assess disease susceptibility in relation to haplotypes, i.e., combinations of alleles on a single chromosome. We study statistical methods for inferring haplotype-related disease risk using SNP genotype data from matched case-control studies, where controls are individually matched to cases on some selected factors. Assuming a logistic regression model for haplotype-disease association, we propose two conditional likelihood approaches that address the issue that haplotypes cannot be inferred with certainty from SNP genotype data (phase ambiquity). One approach is based on the likelihood of disease status conditioned on the total number of cases, genotypes, and other covariates within each …
