The prevalence of childhood obesity is rapidly increasing in the United States and the percentage of overweight or obese children in South Dakota exceeds the objective set by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (2000). An extensive review of literature was completed on the prevalence and characteristics of obesity in children as well as interventions such as a multi-disciplinary team approach and family involvement. A review of the use of measurement tools both for screening and outcome measures was also conducted. There are significant health and societal impacts that accompany the increasing prevalence of obesity in our communities. …

Modeling Groundwater Denitrification By Ferrous Iron Using Phreeqc, Tedros Tesfay
Modeling Groundwater Denitrification By Ferrous Iron Using Phreeqc, Tedros Tesfay
Theses and Dissertations
Nitrate is one of the most common groundwater contaminants, and ingesting it leads to potential health risks. Denitrification, the only effective process to eliminate nitrate, is limited by the abundance of biologically available electron donors. Thus, understanding the natural denitrification capacity of aquifers, through the analysis of all the major electron donors, is essential.
A better way to estimate groundwater denitrification reactions is to compute the mass balance of the redox sensitive species. The University of North Dakota (UND) denitrification team installed mesocosms (ISMs) to understand the fate of nitrate in field conditions. Accordingly, the team has shown the significant …
Prayer Or Prison: The Unconstitutionality Of Mandatory Faith-Based Substance Abuse Treatment, Christopher M. Meissner
Prayer Or Prison: The Unconstitutionality Of Mandatory Faith-Based Substance Abuse Treatment, Christopher M. Meissner
Cleveland State Law Review
Whether faith-based substance abuse treatments are effective is certainly a valid question in its rightful place, but it is not the inquiry pursued here. Rather, this Note argues that a drug court's act of assigning unwilling offenders to twelve-step or otherwise religiously-based residential treatment centers violates the Establishment Clause guarantee. Specifically, such centers regulate the offenders' beliefs and compel them to affirm whatever tenets are professed at the individual treatment center. Moreover, a court's subsequent act of threatening or actually imposing criminal sanctions upon offenders for refusing to complete such treatment programs constitutes punishment for refusing to be religiously indoctrinated …

From Out Of Sight To 'Outta Sight!' Collaborative Art Projects That Empower Children With At-Risk Tendencies, Debrah Sickler-Voight
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
Children with at-risk tendencies are often left out of sight/ site/ cite because of their potential for academic and social failure. Like all children, children with at-risk tendencies have something of value to contribute to society and yearn for opportunities to show of their talents. This article discusses how three different groups of children with at-risk tendencies in Florida and Tennessee participated in site specific community art projects that targeted their needs. Although each student population worked a different theme, the children expressed similar learning outcomes when describing their involvement with the project. This study demonstrates how collaborative community art …

Prebiotic Galactooligosaccharides Reduce Adherence Of Enteropathogenic Escherichia Coli To Tissue Culture Cells, Kari Shoaf, George L. Mulvey, Glen D. Armstrong, Robert W. Hutkins
Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications
Prebiotic oligosaccharides are thought to provide beneficial effects in the gastrointestinal tract of humans and animals by stimulating growth of selected members of the intestinal microflora. Another means by which prebiotic oligosaccharides may confer health benefits is via their antiadhesive activity. Specifically, these oligosaccharides may directly inhibit infections by enteric pathogens due to their ability to act as structural mimics of the pathogen binding sites that coat the surface of gastrointestinal epithelial cells. In this study, the ability of commercial prebiotics to inhibit attachment of microcolony-forming enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) was investigated. The adherence of EPEC strain E2348/69 on HEp-2 …

Serving as a community resource, Panzea is the bioinformatics arm of the Molecular and Functional Diversity in the Maize Genome project. Maize, a classical model for genetic studies, is an important crop species and also the most diverse crop species known. One average, two randomly chosen maize lines have one single-nucleotide polymorphism every ~100 bp; this divergence is roughly equivalent to the differences between humans and chimpanzees. This exceptional genotypic diversity underlies the phenotypic diversity maize needs to be cultivated in a wide range of environments. The Molecular and Functional Diversity in the Maize Genome project aims to understand how …

Oh. What A Tangled Web...The Continuing Evolution Of Personal Jurisdiction Derived From Internet-Based Contacts, Scott T. Jansen
Missouri Law Review
The explosive impact of the Internet has, by its very existence and lack of defining boundaries, opened the door to a fundamental shift in our traditional conceptions of commerce, interaction and accessibility to information. As the law struggles to address this medium of communication - as a realm unto itself requiring new law or simply as another method of communication to which we will apply traditional notions - technology continues to march forward. New conundrums seem to pop up each year, as the World Wide Web further invades daily life. Of course, the usual suspects are involved: free speech, privacy, …
Evaluation Of Potential Multi-Particulate Drug Delivery Systems, Aruna Mummini Murty
Evaluation Of Potential Multi-Particulate Drug Delivery Systems, Aruna Mummini Murty
Open Access Dissertations
Multi-particulate tablets have the advantages of pellets and those of tablets. Formulation studies were performed on pellets using the granulation-extrusion-spheronization technique. The objective was to manufacture pellets of good quality with a high drug load and requisite dissolution rates. Inclusion of Ac-Di-Sol (cross linked sodium carboxymethylcellulose) increased the dissolution rate of drugs from clarithromycin and ciprofloxacin hydrochloride pellets. Surfactants such as cremophor (polyoxyl 35 castor oil) improved wetting of the drug and aided in the extrusion process. A major problem in compaction of coated pellets is that the coating can rupture on compaction, this results in significant differences in dissolution …

Transnational Regulatory Litigation, Hannah Buxbaum
Articles by Maurer Faculty
Recent years have seen much debate about the role of national courts in addressing global harms. That debate has focused on the application by domestic courts of international law - for instance, in civil actions brought in U.S. courts to enforce human rights law. This article identifies a parallel development in the area of economic regulation. It classifies and analyzes a category of cases that seek the application of regulatory law by domestic courts in situations involving global economic misconduct. Like the public international law cases, these cases highlight the tension between the benefits to be gained by enhanced enforcement …
Assessing The Paleoceanographic Potential Of The Coral Montipora Venosa At Fanning Atoll, Central Equatorial Pacific, Alexa Stolorow
Assessing The Paleoceanographic Potential Of The Coral Montipora Venosa At Fanning Atoll, Central Equatorial Pacific, Alexa Stolorow
Geology Theses and Dissertations
As interest in global climate change increases, so does the need for better and more extensive climate proxies. The central equatorial Pacific has been established as the region with the largest ENSO-related sea surface temperature (SST) and precipitation (PPT) anomalies, which are known to impact global interannual climate variability. To date, the coral genus Porites has been most commonly utilized for coral-based paleo-reconstructions of ENSO and lower frequency phenomena. However, due to questions of biological artifacts in coral, to more fully understand coral-based reconstruction, different coral genera need to be analyzed.
In this study, oxygen (δ18O) and carbon (δ13C) isotopic …

As an education major it is important to understand and be able to properly assess disabilities that I may come in contact with when I have a classroom of my own. With many government laws like IDEA, which is the law authorizing special education, and No Child Left Behind I feel it is in my best interest to stay abreast of current accommodations and modifications both research and teachers suggest for students with disabilities. By doing this I am providing my students with a chance to succeed in the best possible environment. I am also staying up-to-date and compliant with …

The Development And Structure Of Feeding Arms In Antarctic Species Of Pterobranchs (Pterobranchia, Hemichordata), Catherine Krahe '06
Honors Projects
Pterobranchs are of particular interest to evolutionary biologists because as members of the phylum Hemichordata, they share characteristics with vertebrate animals and other chordates. The focus of this study is an examination of the development, structure, and function of the feeding arms in several species of pterobranchs collected from depths greater than 500 m from waters surrounding Antarctica. Pterobranch zooids in the genus Cephalodiscus feed using a crown of arms held over the dorsal surface of the body to filter particles from the water. Larvae released from adult tubes are ciliated, but lack feeding arms and are thought to derive …

Safe Motherhood Applied Research And Training (Smart) Report 1: Project Overview, Gul Rashida, Peter C. Miller
Reproductive Health
Maternal mortality in Pakistan is believed to be quite high, at about 350–500 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births. Reducing maternal mortality is one of the major objectives of the Government of Pakistan. Interventions required to address maternal mortality include safe motherhood, which means a woman’s ability to have a safe and healthy pregnancy and delivery. The Safe Motherhood Applied Research and Training (SMART) project was an operations research project designed to develop and test interventions to reduce maternal and neonatal mortality in a predominantly rural district of Pakistan. The vast majority of maternal deaths are attributed to delays in …

Meeting The Health And Social Needs Of Married Girls In India: The First Time Parents Project's Implementation And Reach, Population Council
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
India has one of the largest populations of married adolescent girls in the world. Despite the high prevalence of early marriage and the distinct and predictable risks these girls and young women face, little is known about the lives of married young women, and little has been done to support them. In response, the Population Council, in partnership with Child in Need Institute and Deepak Charitable Trust, initiated the First-Time Parents project. This project developed and tested an integrated package of health and social interventions that would improve married young women's reproductive and sexual health knowledge and practices, and expand …
