A 4-year longitudinal study is being conducted to evaluate potential changes to the environment and exposure of young children associated with the introduction of methylcyclopentadienyl manganese tricarbonyl (MMT) into Australia in 2001. The cohort consists of 57 females and 56 males, with an age range of 0.29–3.9 years. Samples are collected every 6 months from children in residences located at varying distances from major traffic thoroughfares in Sydney. Environmental samples include air, house, and daycare center dustfall, soil, dust sweepings, and gasoline; samples from the children include blood, urine, handwipes prior to and after playing outdoors, and a 6-day duplicate …

The Fathead Minnow In Aquatic Toxicology: Past, Present And Future, Gerald T. Ankley, Daniel L. Villeneuve Jan 2006

The Fathead Minnow In Aquatic Toxicology: Past, Present And Future, Gerald T. Ankley, Daniel L. Villeneuve

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

This paper reviews the roles of the fathead minnow (Pimephales promelas) as a small fish model in the field of aquatic toxicology. The species has been (and is) extensively used both for regulatory testing and research, especially in North America. For example, tests with the fathead minnow, ranging from 48-h lethality through partial and full life-cycle assays, are routinely used for regulatory programs aimed at assessing potential risks of new chemicals such as high-production volume materials and pesticides, as well as impacts of complex mixtures like effluents. The species also has been used for a wide variety of …

Differential Expression Of Immune Response Genes In Steller Sea Lions (Eumetopias Jubatus): An Indicator Of Ecosystem Health?, Lizabeth Bowen, Brian Aldridge, Kimberlee Beckmen, Tom Gelatt, Lorrie Rea, Kathy Burek, Ken Pitcher, Jeffrey L. Stott Jan 2006

Differential Expression Of Immune Response Genes In Steller Sea Lions (Eumetopias Jubatus): An Indicator Of Ecosystem Health?, Lizabeth Bowen, Brian Aldridge, Kimberlee Beckmen, Tom Gelatt, Lorrie Rea, Kathy Burek, Ken Pitcher, Jeffrey L. Stott

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

Characterization of the polygenic and polymorphic features of the Steller sea lion major histocompatibility complex (MHC) provides an ideal window for evaluating immunologic vigor of the population and identifying emergence of new genotypes that reflect ecosystem pressures. MHC genotyping can be used to measure the potential immunologic vigor of a population. However, since ecosystem-induced changes to MHC genotype can be slow to emerge, measurement of differential expression of these genes can potentially provide real-time evidence of immunologic perturbations. MHC DRB genes were cloned and sequenced using peripheral blood mononuclear leukocytes derived from 10 Steller sea lions from southeast Alaska, Prince …

Continued Disappearance Of The Benthic Amphipod Diporeia Spp. In Lake Michigan: Is There Evidence For Food Limitation?, Thomas F. Nalepa, David L. Fanslow, Andrew J. Foley Iii, Gregory A. Lang, Brian J. Eadie, Michael A. Quigley Jan 2006

Continued Disappearance Of The Benthic Amphipod Diporeia Spp. In Lake Michigan: Is There Evidence For Food Limitation?, Thomas F. Nalepa, David L. Fanslow, Andrew J. Foley Iii, Gregory A. Lang, Brian J. Eadie, Michael A. Quigley

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

Benthic surveys were conducted in the southern basin of Lake Michigan and throughout the lake to assess trends in benthic populations, emphasizing recent changes in densities of the benthic amphipod Diporeia spp. and dreissenid mussels. In the southern basin, Diporeia populations declined 89%, 91%, and 45% between 1993 and 2002 at sites <30, 31–50, and 51–90 m, respectively. Lakewide, the population declined 65% between 1994–1995 and 2000. Over the same time period, dreissenid densities, particularly Dreissena bugensis, increased. Intensive studies at 45 m sites in the southeastern region examined changes in lipid content, age structure, and benthic food inputs relative to the hypothesis that food limitation was a factor in Diporeia’s disappearance. As Diporeia densities declined to zero, length–weight remained unchanged, …

Miller, Rodger K. Johnson

Nebraska Swine Reports

This report is an annual update of an ongoing experiment initiated in 2005 to investigate effects of energy restriction during gilt development on reproduction through four parities. Gilts of two genetic lines expected to differ in rate of growth are used and are developed with either ad libitum access to feed or are restricted in energy to 75% of ad libitum amounts from approximately 120 days of age to breeding. Semen of the same sires, an industry maternal line, was used to produce gilts of both lines, but their dams were from two uniquely different populations. Dams of one line …

Effect Of Low-Protein Non-Amino Acid Supplemented Diet And Ractopamine (Paylean®) On Growth Performance And Serum Urea Concentration Of Late-Finishing Pigs, Roman Moreno, Robert Fischer, Phillip S. Miller

Nebraska Swine Reports

When feeding excessive amounts of protein, the nitrogen eliminated by the pigs in swine facilities has an important impact in the environment. Therefore, it is important to define nutritional strategies that promote a more efficient use of protein. This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of a low-protein non-amino acid supplemented diet and ractopamine (Paylean®) on performance of late-finishing pigs. Thirty-six finishing barrows and gilts with an initial body weight of 153.4 lb were used in a 42- day experiment. Pigs were penned individually and had ad libitum access to feed and water. The pigs were randomly allotted to …
