Evaluation Of Rice Hulls As A Lignocellulosic Substitute In Wood Plastic Composites, P. Jack Bourne Jan 2006

Evaluation Of Rice Hulls As A Lignocellulosic Substitute In Wood Plastic Composites, P. Jack Bourne

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

Rising raw material costs and shortage of woody materials necessitate alternative sources for lignocellulosic material in wood plastic composites (WPC). This study was conducted to evaluate rice hull (RH), an agricultural residue, as a cellulosic substitute in WPC. Samples were fabricated with approximately 4% zinc stearate, 48% high-density polyethylene obtained from recycled plastics and 48% lignocellulosic material by mass. The composition of the lignocellulosic material was changed from 0 to 100% RH at 20% increments while the remainder was wood flour. The extruded sampled were tested for mechanical properties such as specific gravity, water absorption, linear coefficients of thermal expansion, …

Beam Attenuation And Chlorophyll Concentration As Alternative Optical Indices Of Phytoplankton Biomass, Michael J. Behrenfeld, Emmanual Boss Jan 2006

Beam Attenuation And Chlorophyll Concentration As Alternative Optical Indices Of Phytoplankton Biomass, Michael J. Behrenfeld, Emmanual Boss

Journal of Marine Research

Chlorophyll has long functioned as the prominent field metric for phytoplankton biomass, but its variability can be strongly influenced by (even dominated by) physiological shifts in intracellular pigmentation in response to changing growth conditions (light, nutrients, temperature). The particulate beam attenuation coefficient (cp) may offer an alternative optical measure of phytoplankton biomass that is readily assessed in situ and relatively insensitive to changes in intracellular pigment content. Unlike chlorophyll, however, cp is not uniquely associated with phytoplankton and varies as well with changes in inorganic, detrital, and heterotrophic particles. In open ocean environments, particles in the …

Evidence Of A Decline In Fat Storage By Midcontinental Sandhill Cranes In Nebraska During Spring: A Preliminary Assessment, Gary L. Krapu, David A. Brandt, Deborah A. Buhl, Gary Lingle Jan 2006

Evidence Of A Decline In Fat Storage By Midcontinental Sandhill Cranes In Nebraska During Spring: A Preliminary Assessment, Gary L. Krapu, David A. Brandt, Deborah A. Buhl, Gary Lingle

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

When an ice storm killed an estimated 2,000 sandhill cranes (Grus canadensis) in the Central Platte River Valley (CPRV) in Nebraska on 24 March 1996, we retrieved the fresh carcasses of 118 adults to test for a decline in the condition of spring-staging cranes from that date in 1978 and 1979. We first conducted a principle component analysis on 3 morphological variables (tarsus, exposed culmen, and wing chord [flattened]) and used the first principal component (PC1) as an index of body size. Then, to account for variation in body mass due to size, we regressed body mass on …

Exemplary Educational Leadership : A Reflective Essay, Sarah E. Morgan Jan 2006

Exemplary Educational Leadership : A Reflective Essay, Sarah E. Morgan

Graduate Research Papers

Maybe now more than ever, the need for strong leadership in education is necessary. Unfortunately, leadership can be masked by many other titles: director, manager, boss, dictator. None are accurate descriptions of a leader. A leader takes on the appearance of servant, peer, guide, and mentor. By serving the staff and meeting their needs--physically, professionally, and emotionally--authority is developed so that managerial techniques which instill resentment are no longer effective, nor needed, and staff will feel comfortable working with you, for you, and along side you.

Livestock Grazing And The Utah Prairie Dog: Implications For Managing The Awapa, R. D. Elmore, Terry A. Messmer Jan 2006

Livestock Grazing And The Utah Prairie Dog: Implications For Managing The Awapa, R. D. Elmore, Terry A. Messmer

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

The Utah prairie dog (Cynomys parvidens) is a federally listed species that occurs only in southwestern Utah. The Awapa Plateau in south-central Utah is one of three Utah prairie dog recovery areas. The prairie dog population in this area is below recovery goals established in 1991 by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS). In 2002, the USFWS approved three Utah prairie dog mitigation banks on the Awapa Plateau. Little information exists regarding how these mitigation banks should be managed to optimize benefits for the species. Past research has suggested that management actions to reduce shrub canopy cover …

Effects Of Flooding Regime, Mycorrhizal Inoculation And Seddling Treatment Type On First-Year Survival Of Nuttall Oak (Quercus Nuttallii Palmer), Hans Michael Williams, Virginia Burkett

Faculty Publications

Three different types of Nuttall oak ( Quercus nuttallii Palmer) seedlings were planted on floodprone, former cropland in Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas. The three types of 1+0 seedlings planted at each site in January and February of 1995 were bareroot seedlings, seedlings grown in 164 square centimeters plastic containers, and containergrown seedlings inoculated with vegetative mycelia of Pisolithus tinctorious (Pers.) Coker and Couch. Seedlings at the Mississippi site were planted in a split-plot design at three different elevations, which provided three different natural flooding treatments. Seedlings at the other two sites were planted in a Latin square design at a …

Winter Food Habits And Preferences Of Northern Bobwhites In East Texas, Donald R. Dietz, R. Montague Whiting Jr., Nancy E. Koerth

Faculty Publications

During late winter, 1994 and 1995, we investigated food habits and preferences of northern bobwhites (Colinus virginianus; hereafter, bobwhites) collected on forested lands in east Texas. Crops for bobwhites were collected from areas under 3 management regimes, namely intensively managed for bobwhites (QMA) (i.e., tree basal area reduced, annually burned, numerous multi-stage food plots, etc.), extensively managed for timber and wildlife (NBS) (i.e., burned every 3-5 years, scattered 2-stage food plots with corn feeders), and unmanaged for wildlife (i.e., burned every 5-7 years). With years pooled, partridge pea (Cassia fasciculata), Hercules club (Zanthoxylum clava-herculis), and pine (Pinus spp.) seeds, and …

A Multi-Parameter Investigation For Optimization Of Very-High-Gravity Batch Beer Fermentation By Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Heather Lynn Jones Jan 2006

A Multi-Parameter Investigation For Optimization Of Very-High-Gravity Batch Beer Fermentation By Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Heather Lynn Jones

Digitized Theses

Employing very-high-gravity (VHG) wort for batch beer production is industrially appealing due to the potential for increased process efficiency and cost-savings. However, this practice has not been extensively commercialized as the stressful conditions thus created can lead to severe effects on yeast health and fermentation performance. The strategy employed in this investigation to mitigate yeast stress and optimize VHG fermentation performance involved simultaneous manipulation of process parameters (i.e. oxygen supply, inoculum size and temperature profile) and wort nutritional factors (e.g. level and source of assimilable nitrogen). This resulted in a 33% reduction in the time to achieve end of fermentation …

Exoenzyme Production By Marine Phytoplankton, Monica Klein Jan 2006

Exoenzyme Production By Marine Phytoplankton, Monica Klein

Digitized Theses

The supply and speciation of different forms of nitrogen and iron are important nutritional parameters influencing the growth, production, and composition of protist communities. While most cells access macronutrients in the inorganic form, some cells are successful in competing for the dissolved organic forms of these elements by producing extracellular enzymes, enabling them to access nutrients. The EnzCheck protease assay was used to assay if marine phytoplankton produced extracellular proteases in response to two environmental conditions: the supply of nitrogen and the supply of iron in the inorganic or organically complexed form. A broad survey of phytoplankton illustrated the diversity …

Community And The Meal: A Rhetorical Investigation, Richard J. Mills Jr. Jan 2006

Community And The Meal: A Rhetorical Investigation, Richard J. Mills Jr.

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

From ancient Greece to post modernity, the meal as a focal point of community life and a cultural practice, and the meaning of eating, have been the focus for numerous scholarly studies and their rhetorical significance. This dissertation will define how interpersonal communication and the enactment of the meal are rhetorical partners within a community. Cultural differences, communication style, and values affect one's perception of the culture's narrative structure, inclusion and exclusion, private and public space, and civility and incivility practices in relationship to the community. These differences impact the meal, food choices, tastes, and communication style and ultimately shape …

Science-Based Organic Farming 2006: Toward Local And Secure Food Systems, Charles A. Francis, Katja Koehler-Cole, Twyla Hansen, Peter Skelton

Publications from the Center for Applied Rural Innovation (CARI)

Organic farming includes growing food and fiber—animals, agronomic crops, horticultural fruits and vegetables, related products—as one dynamic and rapidly evolving component of our complex U.S. food system. Even as more farmers are moving toward organic certification and participation in an environmentally sound and economically lucrative market, questions arise about the long-term social impacts and sustainability of a set of practices that has gone from a movement to an industry. Consolidations in the organic trade have brought multinational corporations to the table, as they have observed a grassroots activity that has grown by 20% per year for the past two decades, …
