Seasonal Variation In Mussel Byssal Thread Mechanics, Gretchen M. Moeser, Emily Carrington Jan 2006

Seasonal Variation In Mussel Byssal Thread Mechanics, Gretchen M. Moeser, Emily Carrington

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

The blue mussel, Mytilus edulis, attaches itself to the substrate by producing a radially arranged complex of collagenous byssal threads. The strength of byssal attachment, or tenacity, has been shown to vary seasonally on Rhode Island shores, increasing twofold in spring in comparison with fall. It was previously assumed that this seasonality was due to increased thread production following periods of increased wave action; however, recent findings do not support this view. As an alternate hypothesis, this study evaluates the contribution of seasonal changes in the material properties of byssal threads to an annual cycle in mussel attachment …

Prudential Standing And The Dormant Commerce Clause: Why The 'Zone Of Interests' Test Should Not Apply To Constitutional Cases, Bradford Mank Jan 2006

Prudential Standing And The Dormant Commerce Clause: Why The 'Zone Of Interests' Test Should Not Apply To Constitutional Cases, Bradford Mank

Faculty Articles and Other Publications

In a unique decision, the Fifth Circuit in National Solid Waste Management Ass'n v. Pine Belt Regional Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) used the prudential zone of interests standing test to bar the plaintiffs, who met constitutional standing requirements, from filing a facial, per se challenge under the dormant Commerce Clause. Six Mississippi counties and cities that are members of the Pine Belt Regional Solid Waste Management Authority (the Authority) had enacted flow control ordinances that required all solid waste collected in their six jurisdictions be sent to the Authority's facilities, and, thus, prohibited the export of waste to alternative, …

Effect Of Supplementing Distillers Grain Or Corn On Performance Of Cows Grazing Spring Pasture During The Breeding Season, Tyler A. Melroe, Richard J. Pruitt, George A. Perry, Jeffrey A. Clapper, Heather A. Werner

South Dakota Beef Report, 2006

In a 2 yr study 180 lactating cows (2 to 10 yr old) grazing pastures dominated by smooth bromegrass and Kentucky bluegrass near Brookings, SD received 3 supplemental treatments for 48 d beginning in mid May. Cows received 4.6 lb DM of dried distillers grains with solubles (DDGS), 4.3 lb corn DM, or no supplement daily, starting approximately 14 d prior to the start of the breeding season. Cows were bled weekly for 5 wk beginning 1 wk prior to the beginning of the treatment period. Serum was analyzed for progesterone concentration to determine the onset of cyclicity. While supplemented …

Role Of Gluconeogenesis And The Tricarboxylic Acid Cycle In The Virulence Of Salmonella Enterica Serovar Typhimurium In Balb/C Mice, Merlin Tchawa Yimga, Mary P. Leatham, James H. Allen, David C. Laux, Tyrrell Conway, Paul S. Cohen Jan 2006

Role Of Gluconeogenesis And The Tricarboxylic Acid Cycle In The Virulence Of Salmonella Enterica Serovar Typhimurium In Balb/C Mice, Merlin Tchawa Yimga, Mary P. Leatham, James H. Allen, David C. Laux, Tyrrell Conway, Paul S. Cohen

Cell and Molecular Biology Faculty Publications

In Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium, the Cra protein (catabolite repressor/activator) regulates utilization of gluconeogenic carbon sources by activating transcription of genes in the gluconeogenic pathway, the glyoxylate bypass, the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle, and electron transport and repressing genes encoding glycolytic enzymes. A serovar Typhimurium SR-11 Δcra mutant was recently reported to be avirulent in BALB/c mice via the peroral route, suggesting that gluconeogenesis may be required for virulence. In the present study, specific SR-11 genes in the gluconeogenic pathway were deleted (fbp, glpX, ppsA, and pckA), and the …

A Study Of The Strengths And Weakenesses Of The Brazilian Bosa Escola Educational Program, Brian Dockery

Capstone Collection

There is a unique educational program that is being implemented in various countries which targets extremely poor children who have little opportunity to education. Called Bolsa Escola in Brazil, it has been heralded as a success in breaking the poverty cycle and increasing educational access and opportunities. This educational program has also been professed to do a variety of things such as decreasing child labor violations, and promoting health. This paper thus identifies the strengths and weaknesses of the Bolsa Escola program within the Federal District in Brazil where it was first piloted. The paper does this by using a …

Postweaning Growth And Carcass Traits In Crossbred Cattle From Hereford, Angus, Norwegian Red, Swedish Red And White, Friesian, And Wagyu Maternal Grandsires, E. Casas, L. V. Cundiff

Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports

The objective of this study was to characterize breeds representing diverse biological types for postweaning growth and carcass composition traits in terminal crossbred cattle. Postweaning growth and carcass traits were analyzed on 434 steers and 373 heifers obtained by mating F1 cows to Charolais sires. Maternal grandsires represented Hereford, Angus, and U.S. Meat Animal Research Center III (1/4 Hereford, 1⁄4 Angus, 1⁄4 Pinzgauer, and 1⁄4 Red Poll) dams to Hereford or Angus (British Breeds), Norwegian Red, Swedish Red and White, Wagyu, or Friesian breeds. Breed groups were slaughtered serially in each of 2 yr (2002 and 2003). Postweaning ADG, slaughter …

Using Simulation Models To Predict Feed Intake: Phenotypic And Genetic Relationships Between Observed And Predicted Values In Cattle, C. B. Williams, G. L. Bennett, T. G. Jenkins, L. V. Cundiff, C. L. Ferrell

Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports

The objectives of this study were to evaluate the accuracy of the Decision Evaluator for the Cattle Industry (DECI) and the Cornell Value Discovery System (CVDS) in predicting individual DMI and to assess the feasibility of using predicted DMI data in genetic evaluations of cattle. Observed individual animal data on the average daily DMI (OFI), ADG, and carcass measurements were obtained from postweaning records of 504 steers from 52 sires (502 with complete data). The experimental data and daily temperature and wind speed data were used as inputs to predict average daily feed DMI (kg) required (feed required; FR) for …

Contribution Of Postmortem Muscle Biochemistry To The Delivery Of Consistent Meat Quality With Particular Focus On The Calpain System, M. Koohmaraie, G. H. Geesink Jan 2006

Contribution Of Postmortem Muscle Biochemistry To The Delivery Of Consistent Meat Quality With Particular Focus On The Calpain System, M. Koohmaraie, G. H. Geesink

Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports

Tenderness has been repeatedly reported as the most important quality aspect of meat. However, a number of studies have shown that a significant portion of retail meat can be considered tough. As a consequence, a significant consumer segment is willing to pay a premium for guaranteed tender meat. However, apart from measuring the shear force, there is no reliable method to predict tenderness. Most of the branded meat programs therefore attempt to ensure eating quality by controlling some of the factors that affect tenderness.

Meat tenderness is determined by the amount and solubility of connective tissue, sarcomere shortening during rigor …

A Multilevel Analysis Of The Relationship Between Birth-Order And Intelligence, Aaron Wichman Jan 2006

A Multilevel Analysis Of The Relationship Between Birth-Order And Intelligence, Aaron Wichman

Psychological Sciences Faculty Publications

Many previous studies have found relationships between birth order and intelligence, but use cross-sectional designs or manifest other threats to internal validity. Using the National

Longitudinal Survey of Youth Children (NLSY) data and multilevel analyses with control variables, we show that when these threats are removed, two major results emerge : (a) Birth order has no measurable influence on children’s intelligence; and (b) Control variables provide strong evidence that earlier-reported birth order effects on intelligence are attributable to environmental and genetic factors that vary between, not within families. Identical sets of analyses on 7-8 and 13-14 year-old children from the …
