Second Harvest (Sh) Prepares For The Next Big Disaster, Timothy Inglish

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

This project will be an emergency preparedness manual to assist the Second Harvest Food Bank in preparing for disaster. By interviewing key individuals of the Food Bank, I will determine the baseline knowledge of these individuals. Through research, a literature review, and contacting local agencies I was able to determine the benefits of disaster preparedness as well as what worked in previous disasters including the Loma Prieta Earthquake of 1989. This emergency preparedness manual empowers Second Harvest staff to better prepare themselves and their network of relief agencies. Furthermore disaster mitigation strategies demonstrates disaster preparedness as a priority to better …

A 3-Decade Dearth Of Deer (Odocoileus Virginianus) In A Wolf (Canis Lupus)–Dominated Ecosystem, Michael Nelson, L. David Mech Jan 2006

A 3-Decade Dearth Of Deer (Odocoileus Virginianus) In A Wolf (Canis Lupus)–Dominated Ecosystem, Michael Nelson, L. David Mech

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

Some 30 y after wolves (Canis lupus) were implicated in decimating wintering white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in a 3000-km2 area of northeastern Minnesota, wintering deer still have not recolonized the area. From 1976 to 2004, we aerially radio-tracked wolves there during 250 h and recorded 2 deer (in 1985 and 2000) killed or eaten by wolves during February and March. We observed no other deer or deer sign, but regularly observed deer, deer sign and wolf-killed deer in adjacent wolf-pack territories. Although habitat in the study area generally remains poor, some regeneration has taken place, …

Survival Of Adult Female Elk In Yellowstone Following Wolf Restoration, Shaney Evans, L. David Mech, P. J. White, Glen A. Sergeant Jan 2006

Survival Of Adult Female Elk In Yellowstone Following Wolf Restoration, Shaney Evans, L. David Mech, P. J. White, Glen A. Sergeant

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

Counts of northern Yellowstone elk (Cervus elaphus) in northwestern Wyoming and adjacent Montana, USA, have decreased at an average rate of 6–8% per year since wolves (Canis lupus) were reintroduced in 1995. Population growth rates of elk are typically sensitive to variations in adult female survival; populations that are stable or increasing exhibit high adult female survival. We used survival records for 85 radio-collared adult female elk 1–19 years old to estimate annual survival from March 2000 to February 2004. Weighted average annual survival rates were approximately 0.83 (95% CI=0.77–0.89) for females 1–15 years old and …

Investigating Culture Through Story, Jennifer Jabareen

MA TESOL Collection

This paper is a description and discussion of a project which incorporates the design for a story-based cultural investigation, based principally on the synthesis of teaching methodologies such as Collaborative Learning, Reader Response Theory and Alternative Assessment and their application to a series of stories. The cultural investigation relies on the application of a five-point graphic model, adapted from the book Teaching Culture: Perspectives in Practice by Patrick R. Moran, which analyzes culture in terms of persons, products, practices, perspectives and community. The paper presents the process by which this project was developed, piloted and assessed, as well as detailed …

Genomic Structure And Expression Of Uncoupling Protein 2 Genes In Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus Mykiss), Issa Coulibaly, Scott A. Gahr, Yniv Palti, Jianbo Yao, Caird E. Rexroad Iii

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Background

Uncoupling protein 2 (UCP2) belongs to the superfamily of mitochondrial anion carriers that dissociate the respiratory chain from ATP synthesis. It has been determined that UCP2 plays a role in several physiological processes such as energy expenditure, body weight control and fatty acid metabolism in several vertebrate species. We report the first characterization of UCP2 s in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss).

Results

Two UCP2 genes were identified in the rainbow trout genome, UCP2A and UCP2B. These genes are 93% similar in their predicted amino acid sequences and display the same genomic structure as other vertebrates (8 …

Nucleolin Links To Arsenic-Induced Stabilization Of Gadd45Α Mrna, Yadong Zhang, Deepak Bhatia, Hongfeng Xia, Vince Castranova, Xianglin Shi, Fei Chen

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

The present study shows that arsenic induces GADD45α (growth arrest and DNA damage inducible gene 45α) mainly through post-transcriptional mechanism. Treatment of the human bronchial epithelial cell line, BEAS-2B, with arsenic(III) chloride (As 3+ ) resulted in a significant increase in GADD45α protein and mRNA. However, As 3+ only exhibited a marginal effect on the transcription of the GADD45α gene. The accumulation of GADD45α mRNA is largely achieved by the stabilization of GADD45α mRNA in the cellular response to As 3+ . As 3+ is able to induce binding of mRNA stabilizing proteins, nucleolin and less potently, HuR, to the …

Wikipdf - A Tool To Help Scientists Understand The Literature Of The Biological, Health, And Life Sciences, David Calloway

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Biological sciences literature can be extraordinarily difficult to understand. Papers are commonly filled with terminology unique to a particular sub-discipline. Readers with expertise outside that sub-discipline often have difficulty understanding information the author is trying to convey. The WikiPDF project that is the subject of this thesis helps readers understand the biological sciences literature by automatically generating a customized glossary for each page of any technical paper available in Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) format. WikiPDF relies on the Wikipedia®, an on-line encyclopedia created and supported by a host of volunteers, as a source of definitions used in its glossaries. …

G1600 Freeze Concentration Of Fruit Juices, Durward Smith, Carol Ringenberg, Eric Olson Jan 2006

G1600 Freeze Concentration Of Fruit Juices, Durward Smith, Carol Ringenberg, Eric Olson

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This publication describes research conducted to examine the feasibility of freeze concentration with small-scale, simple equipment; and research results on juice extraction and concentration from fruit held in frozen storage.

When Grandmother made jelly the wonderful aroma of cooking fruit filled the house. That wonderful aroma was the delicate fruit flavors being evaporated and lost from the jelly. When volatile flavors are retained food has a much better flavor. Freeze concentration of fruit juices is a method of removing water from juices without heating and changing juice flavor. Freeze concentration is effective because a solute in solution has a lower …

Application Of The 1996 Nrc To Protein And Energy Nutrition Of Range Cattle, H. H. Patterson, D. C. Adams, T. J. Klopfenstein, G. P. Lardy Jan 2006

Application Of The 1996 Nrc To Protein And Energy Nutrition Of Range Cattle, H. H. Patterson, D. C. Adams, T. J. Klopfenstein, G. P. Lardy

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Based on applications of the 1996 National Research Council (NRC) Nutrient Requirement of Beef Cattle (2000 update) model at our laboratories and on use of the model to evaluate published literature, it is our assessment that the NRC model (Level 1) represents an advancement in nutrient requirements of grazing cattle. We evaluated 8 published studies (35 treatment observations) to compare observed changes in body condition score (BCS) to those predicted by the NRC model, and to develop criteria to help with application of the model to range cattle nutrition. When in vitro organic matter disappearance (IVOMD) of grazed diets was …

Variation In The U.S. Photoperiod Insensitive Sorghum Collection For Chemical And Nutritional Traits, Tisha L. Hooks, Jeffrey F. Pedersen, D. B. Marx, K. P. Vogel

Department of Statistics: Faculty Publications

Screening germplasm for chemical and nutritional content can be expensive and time consuming. Near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) and application of geostatistical models can make screening more efficient. The objectives of this study were to utilize these technologies to: (i) generate chemical and nutritional values for the U.S. photoperiod insensitive sorghum collection, (ii) describe variability for those traits, (iii) identify accessions in the highest and lowest 1% for each trait, and (iv) describe relationships among the accessions. Accessions were grown at Ithaca, NE, during 2001 and 2002. Samples of grain were scanned and NIRS equations developed for starch, fat, crude protein, …

Pregnancy Rate And First-Service Conception Rate In Angus Heifers, J. Minick Bormann, L. R. Totir, Stephen D. Kachman, R. L. Fernando, D. E. Wilson

Department of Statistics: Faculty Publications

The objective of this project was to determine the genetic control of conception rate, or pregnancy percentage in Angus beef heifers. Producers from 6 herds in 5 states provided 3,144 heifer records that included breeding dates, breeding contemporary groups, service sires, and pregnancy check information. Two hundred fourteen sires of the heifers were represented; with 104 sires having less than 5 progeny, and 14 sires having greater than 50 progeny. These data were combined with performance and pedigree information, including actual and adjusted birth weights, weaning weights, and yearling weights, from the American Angus Association database. Heifer pregnancy rate varied …
