ANSC Articles
One of the several factors that contribute to the low efficiency of mammalian somatic cloning is poor fusion between the small somatic donor cell and the large recipient oocyte. This study was designed to test phytohemagglutinin (PHA) agglutination activity on fusion rate, and subsequent developmental potential of cloned bovine embryos. The toxicity of PHA was established by examining its effects on the development of parthenogenetic bovine oocytes treated with different doses (Experiment 1), and for different durations (Experiment 2). The effective dose and duration of PHA treatment (150 microg/mL, 20 min incubation) was selected and used to compare membrane fusion …

Economic Reforms And Pro-Poor Growth: Lessons For Africa And Other Developing Regions And Economies In Transition, Mwangi S. Kimenyi
Economic Reforms And Pro-Poor Growth: Lessons For Africa And Other Developing Regions And Economies In Transition, Mwangi S. Kimenyi
Economics Working Papers
The paper discusses the meaning and measurement of pro-poor growth and also reviews evidence of pro-poor growth (or the lack of it) in a large cross-section of countries and time periods. The emerging story is that many episodes of growth are not pro-poor and also that although economic reforms have had positive effects in those countries that have been steadfast in implementing market reforms, the overall impact on growth has been small for many countries and in most cases not pro-poor. I present a general theory of pro-poor growth that includes ten principles that should be incorporated in all economic …
Aids Prevention And The Right To Health Under International Law: Burma As The Hard Case, Rhianna M. Fronapfel
Aids Prevention And The Right To Health Under International Law: Burma As The Hard Case, Rhianna M. Fronapfel
Washington International Law Journal
Many commentators suggest that states have a human rights obligation to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS within their borders. Specifically, state HIV/AIDS prevention obligations are often premised on the “right to health” contained within many international human rights documents. Other approaches encourage states to implement AIDS prevention measures by emphasizing the detrimental effects of AIDS on economies and national and international security instead. Many commentators who adhere to the health-and-human-rights model, however, reject such other approaches as overly concerned with the interests of developed countries and lacking the ethical focus that underlies health and human rights. Implicit in such arguments …

Ahead Of The Game: Middle And Upper Palaeolithic Hunting Behaviors In The Southern Caucasus, Daniel S. Adler, Guy Bar-Oz, Anna Belfer-Cohen, Ofer Bar-Yosef
Anthropology Articles
Over the past several decades a variety of models have been proposed to explain perceived behavioral and cognitive differences between Neanderthals and modern humans. A key element in many of these models and one often used as a proxy for behavioral “modernity” is the frequency and nature of hunting among Palaeolithic populations. Here new archaeological data from Ortvale Klde, a late Middle–early Upper Palaeolithic rockshelter in the Georgian Republic, are considered, and zooarchaeological methods are applied to the study of faunal acquisition patterns to test whether they changed significantly from the Middle to the Upper Palaeolithic. The analyses demonstrate that …

There are many reports about the associations between blood lipids, body mass index (BMI) and dietary cholesterol intakes both within the individual and between related individuals. The purpose of this descriptive research project was to investigate the relationships between LDL and HDL cholesterols, body mass index and dietary cholesterol intakes for a sample of African American (AA) mothers and their daughters and to attempt to separate the contribution of genetic versus environmental factors. Mother and daughter participants (n =42 and 66, respectively) were 12-14-hours fasted when blood samples were drawn, heights and weights measured, and 24 hour food recalls completed.

Defining Quality In Early Childhood Settings: Experiences From The Field, Atiya Hussain, Audrey Juma
Defining Quality In Early Childhood Settings: Experiences From The Field, Atiya Hussain, Audrey Juma
Book Chapters / Conference Papers
“The successful education of the child during her/his years of schooling and the participation of that child in society as an adult, depends to a greater degree upon the foundation laid during the early years” (Evans, Myers and IIfled, 2000, p.7). Research indicates that learning is crucial to development whereby knowledge, skills, attitudes and values are developed. Research from disciplines such as physiology, nutrition, health, sociology, psychology and education provide evidence indicating that the early years are crucial in terms of developing intelligence, personality and social behaviour of children. If children are not provided opportunities to communicate, learn and develop …

Health Curriculum And School Quality: Aku-Ied’S, Shabnam Ahmed
Book Chapters / Conference Papers
This paper is based on the experiences of the Health Action Schools project at AKU-IED and looks at issues surrounding the definition, choice and implementation of planned content of health education for primary schools in Pakistan. The paper argues that health education is a vital component to achieving quality because it links home with school; ‘needs now’ with ‘needs later’. Yet it proves exceptionally difficult to plan and deliver such content effectively because curriculum planning bodies are geared to work with separate subjects rather than across the curriculum, with classroom content rather than wider learning experiences in and from school, …

Oncostatin M Differentially Regulates Cxc Chemokines In Mouse Cardiac Fibroblasts, Pascal J. Lafontant
Oncostatin M Differentially Regulates Cxc Chemokines In Mouse Cardiac Fibroblasts, Pascal J. Lafontant
Biology Faculty publications
Ischemia-reperfusion injury in the heart is characterized by marked infiltration of neutrophils in the myocardial interstitial space. Studies in human, canine, and murine models have revealed oncostatin M (OSM) expression in infiltrating leukocytes. In an effort to assess possible roles of OSM in the myocardium, we used cardiac fibroblasts (mCFs) isolated from adult mouse heart to determine whether recombinant murine OSM regulates the synthesis and release of MIP2/ CXCL2, KC/CXCL1, and LIX/CXCL5, which are three potent neutrophil chemoattractants in the mouse. Our results demonstrate that mCFs express OSM receptors and that, within the IL-6 cytokine family, OSM uniquely induces significant …
Revisiting State 4-H Mentoring Programs For County 4-H Professionals, R Dale Safrit
Revisiting State 4-H Mentoring Programs For County 4-H Professionals, R Dale Safrit
Journal of Extension
This article describes major aspects of mentoring programs being conducted currently by state Extension systems to support county 4-H Youth Development professionals. NAE4-HA Mentoring Task Force members developed a quantitative research methodology using a Web-based survey and census of State 4-H Leaders as of September 1, 2003, to collect data. Thirty-four respondents reported having some type of county 4-H mentoring program, including 12 reporting a formal program and 22 an informal program. However, a consistent, Web-based national 4-H professional development mentoring curriculum would better benefit county 4-H professionals and state 4-H programs in the U.S. and globally.
