Use Of Infrared Thermography To Detect Signs Of Rabies Infection In Raccoons (Procyon Lotor), Mike R. Dunbar, Kathleen A. Maccarthy B.S. Feb 2006

Use Of Infrared Thermography To Detect Signs Of Rabies Infection In Raccoons (Procyon Lotor), Mike R. Dunbar, Kathleen A. Maccarthy B.S.

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Infrared thermography was evaluated as a technique to determine if raccoons (Procyon lotor) experimentally infected with rabies virus could be differentiated from non-infected raccoons. Following a 10-day adjustment period, raccoons (n = 6) were infected with a virulent rabies street strain raccoon variant by injection into the masseter muscle at a dose of 2 x 104 tissue-culture infectious dose (TCID50) in 0.2 ml (n = 4) or 105 TCID50 in 1 ml (n = 2). Five of the six raccoons developed prodromal signs of rabies 17 to 22 days post-inoculation …

Lung Development In Laminin Γ2 Deficiency: Abnormal Tracheal Hemidesmosomes With Normal Branching Morphogenesis And Epithelial Differentiation, Nguyet M. Nguyen, Leena Pulkkinen, Jessica A. Schlueter, Guerrino Meneguzzi, Jouni Uitto, Robert M. Senior

Department of Dermatology and Cutaneous Biology Faculty Papers

Background

Laminin γ2 (Lamc2), one of the polypeptides in laminin-332 (laminin-5), is prominent in the basement membrane of alveolar walls and airways of developing and adult lung. Laminins are important for lung morphogenesis and based on its localization, a function for laminin γ2 in lung development has been hypothesized. Targeted deletion of the laminin γ2 gene in mice results in skin blistering and neonatal death at 3–5 days after birth due to failure to thrive.

Methods

Examination of lung development in Lamc2-/- mice through 1–2 days postnatal was accomplished by morphometric analysis, lung bud culture, electron microscopy, immunohistochemical …

Recovery And Germinability Of Native Seed Fed To Cattle, Marina K. Whitacre, Christopher A. Call Feb 2006

Recovery And Germinability Of Native Seed Fed To Cattle, Marina K. Whitacre, Christopher A. Call

Western North American Naturalist

Using livestock as seed dispersal agents may be an effective method for increasing species diversity on degraded and previously seeded rangelands. We quantified seed passage and recovery rates, and post-passage germinability of Wyoming big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata Nutt. ssp. wyomingensis Beetle & Young), bottlebrush squirreltail (Elymus elymoides [Raf.] Swezey), and gooseberry globemallow (Sphaeralcea grossulariaefolia [H. & A.] Rydb.) by feeding Holstein heifers seeds of each species at 3 levels (15,000; 30,000; and 60,000 seeds) over a period of 3 weeks. One-kg fecal samples were collected 1, 2, 3, and 4 days after seed ingestion. Undamaged seeds were …

Behavioral And Physiological Responses Of Eared Grebes (Podiceps Nigricollis) To Variations In Brine Shrimp (Artemia Franciscana) Densities, Joe N. Caudell, Michael R. Conover Feb 2006

Behavioral And Physiological Responses Of Eared Grebes (Podiceps Nigricollis) To Variations In Brine Shrimp (Artemia Franciscana) Densities, Joe N. Caudell, Michael R. Conover

Western North American Naturalist

Eared Grebes (Podiceps nigricollis) use the Great Salt Lake (GSL) primarily as a fall staging area. They feed on brine shrimp (Artemia franciscana) to build up energy reserves to complete their southward migration. Whereas it has been speculated that timing of grebe departure from the GSL is due to declining shrimp density, this hypothesis has not been tested. We monitored grebe weight, behavior, and departure dates to test this hypothesis and to determine the effects of declining shrimp densities on Eared Grebes during 1999, 2000, and 2001 when there were different shrimp densities. Despite differences in …

Pregnancy In Pieces: The Potential Gap In State And Federal Provided Pregnancy Leave, Sarah Stewart Holland Feb 2006

Pregnancy In Pieces: The Potential Gap In State And Federal Provided Pregnancy Leave, Sarah Stewart Holland

ExpressO

This Comment describes a New Jersey Supreme Court in detail, along with the current state of both federal and state leave laws and federal and state pregnancy discrimination laws. Next, this Comment argues that it is the interaction of federal and state leave laws that most often creates a gap in leave and that this gap produces a disparate impact on pregnant employees, which violates the Pregnancy Discrimination Act. It also examines the most common misinterpretations courts make when examining pregnant employees’ requests for recovery under anti-discrimination laws. In conclusion, this Comment advocates for the treatment of pregnancy as one …

Blood Lead Concentrations In The Cat Population Of Tampa, Florida, Liesl M. Wiesen Feb 2006

Blood Lead Concentrations In The Cat Population Of Tampa, Florida, Liesl M. Wiesen

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Where lead pollutes urban soils, both human and animals risk exposure. This exposure gives rise to similar health risks across species. A group of 50 outdoor living cats from inner city Tampa, Florida were tested for blood lead concentration (BLC). Most cats had no measurable lead loads, 14 percent had levels less than or equal to 6 micrograms per decaliter. Soil samples were taken from the home location of each cat. None of these samples, which ranged from 2.6 microgram per gram to 170 micrograms per gram, had hazardous levels of lead. Overall, BLCs were lower than expected. In addition, …
