Masculinities, Femininities, And Fundamentalisms: Gender Confrontations And Collaborations In Global Conflict, Joane Nagel Sep 2006

Masculinities, Femininities, And Fundamentalisms: Gender Confrontations And Collaborations In Global Conflict, Joane Nagel

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

In this multimedia presentation, I combine images and text to argue that organized violence in the global system depends on shared gender cultures, networks, and transactions: Wars are violent confrontations AND collaborations among men and manhoods. Contemporary conflicts are very often depicted as "clashes of civilizations," but in many important respects they are collaborations of masculine cultures and systems of honor. Although organized violence involves men on opposing sides of ethnic or class or national boundaries, ironically, such violence depends on cooperation both among allies and among enemies. Men join forces with comrades as bands of brothers, as men in …

Career Aspirations Of Potential Applicants For Principals Of Catholic Schools: An Australian Perspective, Tony D’Arbon

Journal of Catholic Education

Recent surveys of leadership succession planning in Catholic schools in New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania, and the Northern Territory of Australia have confirmed the growing shortage of persons applying for positions of principal in Catholic schools in those states and territory and examined reasons for the decline in numbers. This paper focuses on a particular aspect of that research in which the career aspirations of those being surveyed, in the pool of potential applicants for principal positions, are analyzed and reported. Implications for the future of Catholic schools in Australia as well as for the future leadership of …

Math Modeling In Educational Research: An Approach To Methodological Fallacies, Bakhtiar S. Varaki, Lorna Earl Sep 2006

Math Modeling In Educational Research: An Approach To Methodological Fallacies, Bakhtiar S. Varaki, Lorna Earl

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Math modeling is currently at the focus of educational methodologists' attention. However, little is known about the extent to which principles of the math modeling lead to methodological fallacies in educational research. The main purpose of this paper is to explore the nature and principles of math modeling and to examine its application in educational research according to transcendental realism theory. The conclusion of the article suggests some methodological fallacies in educational research. Finally, the implications of the fallacies in educational research are considered.

Education For Fullness: The Role Of Adult Education In Nigeria In The 21st Century, Sydney Nwanakponna Osuji Sep 2006

Education For Fullness: The Role Of Adult Education In Nigeria In The 21st Century, Sydney Nwanakponna Osuji

Essays in Education

Education is very necessary for man in order to articulate himself and achieve fullness. But the formal system, which is elitist, discriminatory and instalmental, cannot alone provide all education one needs for self-fulfillment. The terminologies, such as, continuing education, recurrent education, education permanente and life-long education, have been used by different bodies to stress that education should be co-terminous with life. Adult education in its complementary and supplementary roles in education affords citizens of a country opportunities for attainment of self-fulfillment and fullness. Therefore, it is necessary that Nigeria should heighten efforts towards adult education in order to enable the …

Still The Wild West? A 10-Year Look At Campaign Finance Reform In Illinois, Ed Wojcicki Sep 2006

Still The Wild West? A 10-Year Look At Campaign Finance Reform In Illinois, Ed Wojcicki

The Simon Review (Occasional Papers of the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute)

Kent Redfield used to tell a great story while on the speaking circuit in 1996. To describe a weakness in Illinois’ campaign finance laws, he explained that if a terrorist organization filed a routine semiannual report with the Illinois State Board of Elections and declared its purpose to be the assassination of public officials, the elections board’s only role would be to make certain that the group had filed the paperwork properly. That’s because the board had no authority to begin an investigation or to question what was in a candidate’s reports. Illinois laws regarding campaign finance disclosure had no …
