Probing Neutrino Mass Hierarchies And Phi(13) With Supernova Neutrinos, S. H. Chiu, T. K. Kuo Jan 2006

Probing Neutrino Mass Hierarchies And Phi(13) With Supernova Neutrinos, S. H. Chiu, T. K. Kuo

Department of Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

We investigate the feasibility of probing the neutrino mass hierarchy and the mixing angle phi(13) with the neutrino burst from a future supernova. An inverse power-law density rho similar to r(n) with varying n is adopted in the analysis as the density profile of a typical core-collapse supernova. The survival probabilities of nu(e) and (nu) over bar (e) are shown to reduce to two-dimensional functions of n and phi(13). It is found that in the n-sin(2)phi(13) parameter space, the 3D plots of the probability functions exhibit highly nontrivial structures that are sensitive to the mass hierarchy, the mixing angle phi(13), …

Direct Simulation Of Transport In Open-Cell Metal Foams, S. Krishnan, J. Y. Murthy, S V. Garimella Jan 2006

Direct Simulation Of Transport In Open-Cell Metal Foams, S. Krishnan, J. Y. Murthy, S V. Garimella

CTRC Research Publications

Flows in porous media may be modeled using two major classes of approaches: (a) a macroscopic approach, where volume-averaged semiempirical equations are used to describe flow characteristics, and (b) a microscopic approach, where small-scale flow details are simulated by considering the specific geometry of the porous medium. In the first approach, small-scale details are ignored and the information so lost is represented in the governing equations using an engineering model. In the second, the intricate geometry of the porous structures is accounted for and the transport through these structures computed. The latter approach is computationally expensive if the entire physical …

Department of Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

It is well known that, beginning in 2000, the behaviour of the thermal correction to the Casimir force between real metals has been hotly debated. As was shown by several research groups, the Lifshitz theory, which provides the theoretical foundation for the calculation of both the van der Waals and Casimir forces, leads to different results depending on the model of metal conductivity used. To resolve these controversies, theoretical considerations based on the principles of thermodynamics and new experimental tests were invoked. We analyse the present status of the problem (in particular, the advantages and disadvantages of the approaches based …

An Exploratory Study Of Socially Responsibleprocurement Activitiesin The Expenditure Of Public Fundsat The State And Local Level, Donna Mccarthy

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The aggregate annual expenditures of federal, state and local governments, in concert with universities and school districts represents incredible purchasing power and requires great prowess in its expenditure. Over the course of centuries, procurement has been used as a policy tool to improve society. This research delved into defining and determining the involvement of state and local governments in socially responsible activities related to the expenditure of public funds. Data collected in 2005 by the National Institute of Governmental Purchasing, Inc., was reviewed to determine if the expectations set for the private sector known as corporate social responsibility could be …

Parent Leadership Initiative, Evanna M. Disalvo Jan 2006

Parent Leadership Initiative, Evanna M. Disalvo

Theses

Parental involvement in urban public schools is a vital part of any strategic plan to improve student achievement and close the achievement gap, but many parents lack the leadership skills that would enable them to spearhead activities that positively affect school or neighborhood climate and support teamwork with teachers and school administration. My project was to familiarize parents with Kouzes and Posner's five practices of exemplary leadership from The Leadership Challenge using family films to demonstrate leadership, give the parents practice in writing SMART objectives to develop a plan of action, and coach them in implementing a project directed at …

A Feeling For The Micro-Organism: Structure On A Small Scale. Biofilms On Plant Roots, Nancy Fujishige Jan 2006

A Feeling For The Micro-Organism: Structure On A Small Scale. Biofilms On Plant Roots, Nancy Fujishige

Biology Faculty Works

Biofilms are structured communities of bacterial cells enclosed in a self-produced polymeric matrix and adherent to an inert or living surface; they have clinical, industrial and environmental impacts. Biofilms that are established by bacteria on plants are found on the surfaces of roots, leaves, seeds and internal vascular tissues where the microbes live in commensal, mutualistic or parasitic/pathogenic associations with their host. The study of the structure of plant-associated biofilms has been considerably helped by the development of techniques using fluorescent markers coupled with confocal scanning laser microscopy as well as scanning electron microscopy. We review several of these techniques …

Deletion Analysis Of Fum Genes Involved In Tricarballylic Ester Formation During Fumonisin Biosynthesis, Robert A. E. Butchko, Ronald D. Plattner, Robert H. Proctor Jan 2006

Deletion Analysis Of Fum Genes Involved In Tricarballylic Ester Formation During Fumonisin Biosynthesis, Robert A. E. Butchko, Ronald D. Plattner, Robert H. Proctor

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Fumonisins are carcinogenic mycotoxins produced by the maize ear rot pathogen Gibberella moniliformis (anamorph Fusarium verticillioides). These toxins consist of a linear polyketide-derived backbone substituted at various positions with an amine, one to four hydroxyl, two methyl, and two tricarballylic ester functions. In this study, we generated and characterized deletion mutants of G. moniliformis for five genes, FUM7, FUM10, FUM11, FUM14, and FUM16 in the fumonisin biosynthetic gene cluster. Functional analysis of mutants in four genes, predicted to encode unrelated proteins, affected formation of the tricarballylic esters. FUM7 deletion mutants produced a previously undescribed homologue of fumonisin B …

Fusarium Genomic Resources: Tools To Limit Crop Diseases And Mycotoxin Contamination, Daren W. Brown, Robert A. E. Butchko, Robert H. Proctor

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

It has been almost 10 years since Joan Bennett suggested that fungal biologists create a ‘‘wish list’’ for fungal genome sequences (Bennett JW. White paper: Genomics for filamentous fungi. Fungal Genet Biol 1997; 21: 3–7). The availability of over 200 review papers concerning fungal genomics is a reflection of significant progress with a diversity of fungal species. Although much progress has been made, the use of genomic data to study mycotoxin synthesis and function, pathogenesis and other aspects of fungal biology is in its infancy. Here, we briefly present the status of publicly available genomic resources for Fusarium, a …

Mediation Success Or Failure: A Search For The Elusive Criteria, Jacob Bercovitch Jan 2006

Mediation Success Or Failure: A Search For The Elusive Criteria, Jacob Bercovitch

Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution

One of the central issues in the field of conflict resolution concerns the degree to which we can define a mediated or negotiated outcome as successful. How do we know that an outcome meets the criteria of success? How can we evaluate it? For example, how would we define the conclusion of the Camp David talks, where President Carter so ably mediated between the parties, and which produced a historic agreement between Israel and Egypt in 1978? Was that ground-breaking agreement successful? There will be as many opinions on that as there are commentators, but few will stop and think …

Promotion Of International Commercial Arbitration And Other Alternative Dispute Resolution Techniques In Ten Southern Mediterranean Countries, Giuseppe De Palo, Linda Costabile Jan 2006

Promotion Of International Commercial Arbitration And Other Alternative Dispute Resolution Techniques In Ten Southern Mediterranean Countries, Giuseppe De Palo, Linda Costabile

Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution

As the strategic economic partner of the Southern Mediterranean (MEDA) region, the European Union (EU) seeks to promote effective mechanisms of development through increased industrial cooperation in order to create a Euro-Mediterranean area of shared prosperity. The first Euro-Mediterranean Conference of Ministries of Industry, held in June of 1996 in Brussels, listed among its priority objectives 1) the formation of a fair judicial and administrative framework for investment; and 2) the establishment and support of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) through the development of regional networks. However, recent reports on world trade and investment describe the MEDA region as an …

Begging For Justice? Or, Adaptive Jurisprudence? Initial Reflections On Mandatory Adr To Enforce Women's Rights In Rwanda, Phyllis E. Bernard Jan 2006

Begging For Justice? Or, Adaptive Jurisprudence? Initial Reflections On Mandatory Adr To Enforce Women's Rights In Rwanda, Phyllis E. Bernard

Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution

This Article presents the author's personal reflections on the promise and perils involved in blending rules of modern law with traditional values of African culture. The project began from a basic premise that both Americans and Rwandans should proceed with caution when expanding the privatization of public justice. Nevertheless, an outside observer's caution must be balanced with respect for a nation's right to self-determination, even when those choices may clash with generally accepted ADR theory as developed in the United States. This Article suggests that we can all learn much from Rwanda's bold, pragmatic experiment in redefining the essential nature …

Obstruction Of Justice: The Arbitration Process For Anti-Doping Violations During The Olympic Games, Andrew Goldstone Jan 2006

Obstruction Of Justice: The Arbitration Process For Anti-Doping Violations During The Olympic Games, Andrew Goldstone

Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution

This Note will discuss the serious legal, ethical, and scientific questions raised by the dispute resolution process for anti-doping violations during the Olympic Games. Throughout the Note, I will highlight both procedural and substantive aspects of the process which raise sufficiently serious legal issues to merit an American court's agreement to review an Olympic arbitration award. Part I will discuss the rise of doping in sports, and the manner in which the problem has been, and is currently being addressed within the Olympic Movement. Part II will explain the hierarchy of sports governing bodies beneath the IOC and also discuss …

Part I of this Article provides a better understanding of the restorative justice theory and its practical expressions. It describes the values and objectives upon which restorative justice is premised and introduces the three most common restorative justice practices: victim-offender mediation, group conferencing and circles. Part II introduces the democratic experimentalism model and demonstrates its compatibility with the restorative justice theory. Part III introduces four restorative justice programs currently operating in the United States, two operated by courts and two by prosecuting agencies. Part IV demonstrates the inadequacy of the evaluation mechanisms currently employed by these programs and emphasizes the …

Language, Morals, And Conceptual Frameworks In Dispute Resolution: Establishing, Employing, And Managing The Logos, Michael T. Wawrzycki Jan 2006

Language, Morals, And Conceptual Frameworks In Dispute Resolution: Establishing, Employing, And Managing The Logos, Michael T. Wawrzycki

Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution

Any lawyer knows that words and language are important. A single word can derail a painstakingly written contract; the characterization of a would-be killer as a victim framed by racist police officers, rather than a jealous husband, can change the outcome of a case. Yet like many maxims, this important lesson is often forgotten when one is not confronted with the direct principles of words and language. Moreover, even most lawyers do not fully understand how to appropriately utilize the language tools that can change outcomes: myopically focusing on specific issues or characterizations rather than the overall conceptual frames.
