Understanding The Experiences Of Black Women Becoming Single Mothers By Choice Using Assisted Reproductive Technology, Jessica Chantal Prepetit Apr 2026

Understanding The Experiences Of Black Women Becoming Single Mothers By Choice Using Assisted Reproductive Technology, Jessica Chantal Prepetit

Theses & Dissertations

The term Single Mothers by Choice (SMBC) refers to women who choose to have a child without a partner. According to the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM), ovarian reserve decreases with a woman’s age. Women are born with approximately 1 million eggs; this number decreases over time. When a woman reaches 35 years of age, which is considered advanced maternal age, their egg count and quality decline. These factors of low ovarian reserve can place a woman in a category of infertility. Also, a woman may unknowingly suffer from uterine abnormalities that may hinder a successful pregnancy. As women …

It highlights the growing international connections among law and technology scholars. And it features many of the cutting-edge papers from one of the world’s premier law and robotics conferences, We Robot.

The thirteenth annual We Robot 2025 conference was held at the University of Windsor in April 2025. This conference marked the first ever in-person gathering of …

To Smile Or Not To Smile? What Policymakers Need To Know About The Interplay Between Expressive Robotics And Public Perception, Adeline Schneider, Waseq Billah, Naomi T. Fitter Apr 2026

To Smile Or Not To Smile? What Policymakers Need To Know About The Interplay Between Expressive Robotics And Public Perception, Adeline Schneider, Waseq Billah, Naomi T. Fitter

Canadian Journal of Law and Technology

The growing presence of autonomous delivery robots (ADRs) in public spaces has introduced new challenges regarding public perception, safety, and policy regulation. While ADRs provide a convenient, contactless delivery solution, there has been little research exploring how their design influences public acceptance and regulatory concerns. This study investigates the impact of expressive robotic features on perceptions of ADRs through a between-subjects online survey comparing two ADR models: the expressive Dax robot and the more widely deployed Starship robot. Participants answered questions about the robots’ expressivity and policy-relevant perceptions surrounding the robot. Findings showed a mix of enhancements from added robot …

Interoperable Ai Regulation, Jennifer Raso Apr 2026

Interoperable Ai Regulation, Jennifer Raso

Canadian Journal of Law and Technology

This article explores ‘‘interoperability” as a new goal in AI regulation in Canada and beyond. Drawing on sociotechnical, computer science, and digital government literatures, it traces interoperability’s conceptual genealogy to reveal an underlying politics that prioritizes harmony over discord and consistency over plurality. This politics, the article argues, is in tension with the distinct role of statutory law (as opposed to regulation) in a democratic society. Legislation is not simply a technology through which one achieves the smooth operation of governance. Rather, legislation is better understood as a ‘‘boundary object”: an information system through which members of different communities make …

Generating Personal Data And The Gdpr Conceptualizing, Analyzing, And Recognizing Generated Personal Data, Hideyuki Matsumi Apr 2026

Generating Personal Data And The Gdpr Conceptualizing, Analyzing, And Recognizing Generated Personal Data, Hideyuki Matsumi

Canadian Journal of Law and Technology

In 2014, to fight the littering problem, an environmental group posted portraits of potential litterbugs on public streets. The group extracted DNA from tossed cigarettes, coffee cups, or condoms, and generated the possible likeness of individuals whose DNA was found from these items in public. Similarly, in 2017, detectives working on a cold case sent DNA found at the crime scene of a homicide and sexual assault victim from 1990 to a company that claims it ‘‘can turn DNA into a face”. Subsequently, detectives published the ‘‘predicted face” in an attempt to solicit tips from the public. In 2020, they …

R-Ai-Sing Questions: Exploring The Ethical And Legal Landscape Of Artificial Intelligence-Generated Media Of Medicalized Children, Kristen Thomasen, Gregorio Zuniga-Villaneuva, Muhammed Mukadam, David Lysecki

Canadian Journal of Law and Technology

When it comes to complex medical care for children, even in a country like Canada with many publicly funded healthcare services, much of the necessary research and holistic support for children and families is financed through private donations. Fundraising campaigns for children’s hospitals and services are common, often featuring movie stars, professional athletes, and many child patients. A range of important charitable activities, providing comfort, services, and necessities such as food and accommodation to children and families, are carried out through fundraising and donations. Fundraising for children’s services is a multibillion-dollar global undertaking. What’s more, it is largely dependent on …

Game Face: Legal Tackle On Facial Recognition And Privacy Rights At Nfl Games, Shanthi E. Senthe Apr 2026

Game Face: Legal Tackle On Facial Recognition And Privacy Rights At Nfl Games, Shanthi E. Senthe

Canadian Journal of Law and Technology

The unprecedented rapid uptake of facial recognition technology (‘‘FRT”) in commercial and public spaces for data capture and surveillance has entrenched every aspect of our daily lives from mundane tasks, such as grocery store shopping to family and experiential moments, such as participation in spectator sports. As such, the rapid adoption and integration of FRT into sports security is reshaping aspects of sporting events and fan experiences, often without adequate consideration of privacy and ethical implications. Professional sports leagues, specifically the NFL, are in the process of adopting the use of this type of technology to enhance security measures, streamlining …

Threads Of Protection: Intellectual Property Protections For Fashion Designs In The Age Of Generative Ai, Nayomi Mendez Andrade Apr 2026

Threads Of Protection: Intellectual Property Protections For Fashion Designs In The Age Of Generative Ai, Nayomi Mendez Andrade

Washington Journal of Law, Technology & Arts

This Article examines the limitations of intellectual property law in the United States for fashion designers and their creations. In doing so, it considers the impact generative artificial intelligence technologies have had on such protections. Despite fashion’s cultural and economic significance, U.S. law offers only fragmented protection through copyrights, trademarks, trade dress, and patents. Copyright law is significantly constrained by the useful article doctrine and the separability requirement articulated in Star Athletica v. Varsity Brands. Thus, copyrights only protect separable artistic elements rather than garments as a whole. Trademark and trade dress protections are typically only effective for well-established brands, …

Generated Wills And Responsible Ai Use In Estate Law, Collin Peters Apr 2026

Generated Wills And Responsible Ai Use In Estate Law, Collin Peters

Washington Journal of Law, Technology & Arts

Generative AI tools have been increasingly used by corporations and individuals to create documents quickly and cheaply based on short human inputs. The coming of widely accessible and cheap-to-use generative AI tools introduces the possibility of firms or lay testators using AI to generate wills. However, the risks of using AI to generate wills are largely unexplored and have not received much regulatory attention nor discussion in the literature. As a result, the question of how to manage the risks of AI-generated wills in a way that ensures their safe, accessible, and productive use has largely gone unaddressed. This article …

From Software To Models: Rethinking Open Source In The Age Of Generative Ai, Dana Beldiman Apr 2026

From Software To Models: Rethinking Open Source In The Age Of Generative Ai, Dana Beldiman

Washington Journal of Law, Technology & Arts

Open-source software (OSS), a form of distributed and collaborative software development rooted in the ethos of early computer science, has evolved into an essential component of modern digital infrastructure. This article asks whether open source will assume a similarly transformative role within the emerging technological paradigm of generative artificial intelligence (AI).

Generative AI differs fundamentally from software: its constituent artifacts, architectures, generative capacities, and deployment contexts are distinct and substantially more complex. Despite these differences, foundation models continue to be released under licenses originally designed for software, which may not constitute a valid transfer of rights in the generative AI …

High-Speed Driverless Racing: Lessons For Autonomous Mobility, Justin Gan, Samuel Labi Apr 2026

High-Speed Driverless Racing: Lessons For Autonomous Mobility, Justin Gan, Samuel Labi

Center for Connected and Automated Transportation

Driverless racecar competitions are often perceived as recreational. However, their academic, industry, and research benefits are potentially tremendous, as several significant lessons can be learned from these competitions to advance autonomous mobility. This study was motivated (and its conduction facilitated) by the active involvement of the authors in several autonomous racing initiatives in the United States. The study first synthesized and analyzed information from existing literature related to the key modules of autonomous vehicle (AV) operations as part of AV racing competitions and identified some lessons that could be learned in the context of each module – perception and sensing, …

Problematic Social Media Use’S Association With Social Anxiety And Neural Responsiveness To Reward From Social Media Feedback, Kaylee Mercer Apr 2026

Problematic Social Media Use’S Association With Social Anxiety And Neural Responsiveness To Reward From Social Media Feedback, Kaylee Mercer

All NMU Master's Theses

Social media has become increasingly relevant, especially among young adults. Those with social anxiety are more at risk for problematic social media use. Social media increases activity in the brain's reward centers. A common measure of the neural correlates of reward is the event-related potential, reward positivity (RewP) in EEG. Heightened RewP is associated with greater social anxiety. Problematic social media use is also associated with greater social anxiety. The neural correlates of reward elicited from social media use have yet to be adequately explored. The current research used continuous high-density electroencephalography to measure reward sensitivity when viewing positive or …

Improving Cannabis Sativa's Phytoremediation Capabilities Of Forever Chemicals Through Microbial Inoculations, Tyler S. Jolin Apr 2026

Improving Cannabis Sativa's Phytoremediation Capabilities Of Forever Chemicals Through Microbial Inoculations, Tyler S. Jolin

All NMU Master's Theses

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are persistent environmental contaminants that pose ecological and human health risks due to their resistance to degradation and potential for bioaccumulation. Phytoremediation has emerged as a potential strategy for mitigating PFAS contamination, and plant-microbe interactions may influence contaminant uptake and transport within plant systems. These studies investigated microbial inoculation methods and examined whether Bacillus subtilis could influence the uptake and distribution of perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) in hydroponically grown hemp (Cannabis sativa L.). Plant height and stem diameter growth rates and biomass accumulation were compared across treatments with and without PFOS exposure and microbial inoculation. PFOS …

Analysis Of A Coaxial Transmission Line Filled With An Orthorhombic Dielectric-Magnetic Medium, Fathima Manikunnath Abdul Akbar Apr 2026

Analysis Of A Coaxial Transmission Line Filled With An Orthorhombic Dielectric-Magnetic Medium, Fathima Manikunnath Abdul Akbar

Theses

Coaxial transmission lines are fundamental means for Transverse Electromagnetic (TEM) wave propagation in RF, microwave and high-speed electronic systems. The study of transmission lines is often familiar when they are filled with isotropic materials; however modern engineered direction dependent materials reshape field distributions. In this thesis, we consider a coaxial transmission line of an inner radius and outer radius b filled with an orthorhombic dielectric-magnetic material, which is described by two anisotropy parameters αx and αy. The potential and field distributions are studied in relation to the ratio b/a as well as the anisotropy parameters αx and αy. Due to …

Theses

This thesis is concerned with determining the optimal water treatment and harvesting strategy for Lemna minor duckweed plants. The main objective of this thesis is to examine how duckweed plants grow in terms of biomass, photosynthetic activity, leaf morphology, chlorophyll and carotenoid content, and their efficiency in nutrient removal from different water sources. The methodology of the study included assessing duckweed in three water samples including tap water, saline water, and greywater and three harvesting strategies, including low, medium, and high harvesting intensities to assess their growth and nutrient removal efficiency. The results of the study showed that L. minor …

Law, Conflict, And Hybrid Warfare: A Teaching Imperative For A Changing World, Cynthia Alkon, Andrea K. Schneider Apr 2026

Law, Conflict, And Hybrid Warfare: A Teaching Imperative For A Changing World, Cynthia Alkon, Andrea K. Schneider

Articles

Lawyers increasingly find themselves at the frontlines of the battlefield, just not in the traditional sense. Hybrid warfare is a conflict form that combines traditional military offensive measures with nontraditional methods, including the harnessing of legal systems to achieve strategic goals. Lawyers have always been at the frontline of typical legal risk assessment, thinking about a client’s risk of liability or regulation costs generally. Now, lawyers must stand at the ready for a lot more: lawyers must be prepared for cyber-attacks, disinformation campaigns using artificial intelligence, the use of court systems to suppress reporting or shield bad actors, and so …

Creating An Audio Drama, Nikolas D. Stark Apr 2026

Creating An Audio Drama, Nikolas D. Stark

Honors Theses

Creating an audio drama is a process that normally includes a team of people taking on their own specialized roles. For this project, I instead assumed each of these positions myself in order to better understand the nuances of each role and voice acting industry as a whole. These roles included script writer, sound engineer, voice actor, voice director, editor, and sound designer. Overall, this process took seven months to complete in its entirety, with three artistic collaborators joining the process. While inherently difficult for one person to fulfill each of these roles, I not only accomplished it, but I …

A Critical Narrative Review Appraisal Of The 2025–2030 Dietary Guidelines: Scientific Strengths, Conceptual Gaps, And Overlooked Dimensions Of Sustainability And Health Equity, Dimitrios Papandreou, Azza Alsuwaidi, Zainab Taha, Constantinos Giaginis, Georgios K. Vasios, Eleni P. Andreou Apr 2026

A Critical Narrative Review Appraisal Of The 2025–2030 Dietary Guidelines: Scientific Strengths, Conceptual Gaps, And Overlooked Dimensions Of Sustainability And Health Equity, Dimitrios Papandreou, Azza Alsuwaidi, Zainab Taha, Constantinos Giaginis, Georgios K. Vasios, Eleni P. Andreou

All Works

The 2025–2030 Dietary Guidelines introduce an important shift in public health nutrition, emphasizing minimally processed foods, higher protein intake, greater inclusion of full-fat dairy, and a food-based advice centered on “real food” consumption. While several of these recommendations align with accumulating evidence, particularly the discouragement of ultra-processed foods and added sugars, substantial concerns remain regarding their internal coherence, population-level applicability, risk of misinterpretation, as well as environmental footprint. This critical narrative review evaluates whether the scope, emphasis, and framing of the new guideline components are proportionate to the strength, consistency, and context of the underlying evidence. Using a novel framework …
