Film And Television After 9/11 [Book Review], Marc Ouellette Jan 2006

Film And Television After 9/11 [Book Review], Marc Ouellette

English Faculty Publications

One of the necessary compromises a book such as Film and TV After 9/11 must make is the amount and variety of examples it can provide. In order to be the first book to cover the subject, the book sacrifices the types of materials covered and the variety of themes they depict. Although the editor, Wheeler Winston Dixon, does not do so, the book’s twelve essays slot into four basic categories: analogies, productions altered to suit the "post-9/11" mindset, post-9/11 productions with metaphorical rather than literal linkages to the event and pre-9/11 productions whose viewing must now take that day …

Screenplay: Cinema/Videogames/Interfaces [Book Review], Marc Ouellette Jan 2006

Screenplay: Cinema/Videogames/Interfaces [Book Review], Marc Ouellette

English Faculty Publications

Recognizing the growing importance (at least for consumers) of video games as a popular form of narrative fiction, Geoff King and Tanya Krzywinska situate their collection, ScreenPlay: cinema/videogames/interfaces as a text which is corrective, informative and explorative. In the first case, the editors sought essays which would move the critical discourse on video games away from the more familiar but reductive debates surrounding the "effects" of video games (especially on children) and their modes of representation (especially of the female form and violence). Indeed, these have become the sine qua non of video game criticism and one feeds the other …

"It'll Pass": Nypd: Blue's Sipowicz And Mundane Masculinity, Marc Ouellette Jan 2006

"It'll Pass": Nypd: Blue's Sipowicz And Mundane Masculinity, Marc Ouellette

English Faculty Publications

(First paragraph) The development of the character of Det. Andy Sipowicz, on the ABC drama, NYPD: Blue, effectively demonstrates that the obstinance of traditional forms of masculinity may ultimately be a key factor in their undoing. Rather than effecting a superficial change based on consumer choice, as concurrent characters do, Sipowicz undergoes a transformation of his social behavior. Sipowicz regularly behaves in a manner consistent with Robert Connell’s definition of “hegemonic masculinity”: he resorts to violence, he resists change and he resents women and minorities (131). His alcoholism and quick temper tend to hinder his ability to adapt. However, change …

Hurricane Wind Speed And Rain Rate Retrieval Algorithm For The Stepped Frequency Microwave Radiometer, Ruba Amarin Jan 2006

Hurricane Wind Speed And Rain Rate Retrieval Algorithm For The Stepped Frequency Microwave Radiometer, Ruba Amarin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis presents the development and validation of the Hurricane Imaging Retrieval Algorithm (HIRA) for the measurement of oceanic surface wind speed and rain rate in hurricanes. The HIRA is designed to process airborne microwave brightness temperatures from the NOAA, Stepped Frequency Microwave Radiometer (SFMR), which routinely collects data during NOAA hurricane hunter aircraft flights. SFMR measures wind speeds and rain rates at nadir only, but HIRA will soon be integrated with an improved surface wind speed model for expanded utilization with next generation microwave hurricane imagers, such as the Hurricane Imaging Radiometer (HIRad). HIRad will expand the nadir only …

Coining Children's Blood Into Capital: Can Precepts Of International Law End Economic Exploitation Of Children, Valerie L 'Herrou Jan 2006

Coining Children's Blood Into Capital: Can Precepts Of International Law End Economic Exploitation Of Children, Valerie L 'Herrou

Richmond Journal of Law and the Public Interest

Article 32 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child ("UN Convention") states that parties to the convention must "recognize the right of the child to be protected from economic exploitation and from performing any work that is likely to be hazardous or to interfere with the child's education, or to be harmful to the child's health or physical, mental, spiritual, moral or social development." Despite this well-intentioned document and several other treaties, conventions and protocols, millions of children around the world are subjected to varying degrees of economic exploitation, some in conditions that are akin to …

Credentialism And The Proliferation Of Fake Degrees: The Employer Pretends To Need A Degree; The Employee Pretends To Have One, Creola Johnson

Hofstra Labor & Employment Law Journal

A report from the U.S. General Accounting Office recently exposed 463 federal employees with degrees from schools believed to be "diploma mills" - sham schools that sell college degrees to individuals who complete little or no academic work to earn them. This report, along with other investigative work, confirmed the claims of diploma mill operators: their "graduates" have well-paying jobs in all levels of both the public and private sectors, and employers have subsidized the purchase of fake degrees via tuition reimbursement programs. For a growing number of positions, employers prefer college students and graduates over workers with only high …

Hazing: What Ohio High School Teachers, Coaches And Administrators Need To Know, Corinne M. Daprano, Meghan Kenney, Peter J. Titlebaum, Michael Triola

Health and Sport Science Faculty Publications

Once thought to be primarily an issue of concern for university fraternities and sororities, hazing has emerged as a disturbing trend with an increase in the number of incidents involving high school student athletes. High school coaches, athletic administrators, and teachers must understand that initiation rites of sport teams can sometimes spiral out of control with grave legal and financial consequences for student athletes and school officials. The purposes of this article are to:

  • Define hazing and review the history of anti-hazing legislation in the United States of America.
  • Describe hazing laws in the State of Ohio.
  • Review current research …

Copyright, Originality, And The End Of The Scenes A Faire And Merger Doctrines For Visual Works, Michael D. Murray Jan 2006

Copyright, Originality, And The End Of The Scenes A Faire And Merger Doctrines For Visual Works, Michael D. Murray

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

The merger doctrine in copyright states that if an idea and the expression of the idea are so tied together that the idea and its expression are one - there is only one conceivable way or a drastically limited number of ways to express and embody the idea in a work - then the expression of the idea is uncopyrightable because ideas may not be copyrighted. The scenes a faire doctrine complements the merger doctrine by providing that certain subject matter - stock images, tried and true story lines, fables and folklore, scenes of nature, common visual and cultural references, …

The Community Arts As A Community Development Strategy : A Look Into Community Arts Festivals, Arlene D. Eidukas Jan 2006

The Community Arts As A Community Development Strategy : A Look Into Community Arts Festivals, Arlene D. Eidukas

Capstone Collection

"Creativity is one of the last remaining legal ways of gaining an unfair advantage over the competition" -Ed McCabe My background is in the Arts. I see art, the creation of it and its process of creation, as a way of keeping records of ones life. For many artists, it is the way they mentally, physically, spiritually, and economically sustain themselves. This knowledge has led me to investigate if the power of art can do that as well for communities which may need help in building bonds amongst their inhabitants and economic stability. Many development agents have focused primarily on …

Beur Travel Writing: Tassadit Imache’S Algerie, Monika Siebert Jan 2006

Beur Travel Writing: Tassadit Imache’S Algerie, Monika Siebert

English Faculty Publications

The particular cultural positioning described as the beur predicament and often summed up in the phrase “belonging neither here nor there,” is clearly a result of French colonial history. As such, it hardly refers to subjects able or willing to assume the vantage point of the classic European travel narrative or to employ its poetics. Beurs are children of North African immigrants (primarily from Algeria, but also Morocco and Tunisia) who arrived in France after the Second World War to work in the developing auto industries. While entitled to French citizenship (born in pre-independence Algeria, their parents are French subjects), …
