A Quantitative Analysis Of Performance In A Multi-Protocol Ad Hoc 802.11b-Based Wireless Local Network, Paul Christian Nielsen Jr. Jan 2006

A Quantitative Analysis Of Performance In A Multi-Protocol Ad Hoc 802.11b-Based Wireless Local Network, Paul Christian Nielsen Jr.

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

The popularity of the Internet and the growing demand for ubiquitous connectivity accelerate the need for viable wireless local area network (WLAN) solutions. As a consequence, increasing number of manufacturers have adopted the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) 802.11a/b/g set of WLAN standards and produced inexpensive wireless products to expand capabilities of existing LANs. IEEE 802.11 b wireless products are widely accepted. Mobile ad hoc networks, a variant of the 802.11 standards, exist without the requirement for a wired infrastructure or host to provide routing, connectivity, and maintenance services. Because of the high variability of environments in which …

Blogging: An Inquiry Into The Efficacy Of A Web-Based Technology For Student Reflection In Community College Computer Science Programs, Jane W. Perschbach

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

Reflection in learning is a pedagogical technique used to promote the higher order cognitive skills of analysis, synthesis, and evaluation that constitute the concept of critical thinking. To foster reflection in learning, the Internet technology of online journals known as blogs was employed in a two-semester, four-course investigation of the efficacy of this educational technology for vocational computer science students in a community college. The process involved an instructor-designed and maintained course blog containing suggestions for student reflection as well as hyperlinks to individual student peer blogs. Students were required to read both the course and peer blogs, and to …

The State Action Doctrine And The Principle Of Democratic Choice, Wilson R. Huhn Jan 2006

The State Action Doctrine And The Principle Of Democratic Choice, Wilson R. Huhn

Hofstra Law Review

The Supreme Court has badly misread the purpose of the state action doctrine. The Supreme Court has failed to recognize that the fundamental value that is served by the state action doctrine is not "individual freedom" but rather "democratic choice." As a result the Court has narrowly construed the concept of state action, and has underestimated the necessity of applying constitutional norms to the exercise of combined private and state power. The Supreme Court has also misconstrued the distinction between state action and state inaction. Once protective laws have been enacted through the democratic process state action exists, and constitutional …

To Attain "The Just Rewards Of So Much Struggle": Local-Resident Equity Participation In Urban Revitalization, Barbara L. Bezdek Jan 2006

To Attain "The Just Rewards Of So Much Struggle": Local-Resident Equity Participation In Urban Revitalization, Barbara L. Bezdek

Hofstra Law Review

Annually, Americans pour out their sympathy for people displaced from their communities by natural disasters such as fires, floods, and hurricanes. We respond, knowing the anchor that the concept of "home" supplies to body, soul, and family; we intuit the toll exacted by the loss of familiar walls, private homes and community-shared places. Yet, redevelopment policy and practice in the U.S. today relies upon the massive relocation of poor people and the destruction of poor people's neighborhoods with only token recognition of the costs and burdens imposed on the displaced. Although the devastation of community, family, and lives is just …

Debating Conflicts: Medicine, Commerce, And Contrasting Ethical Orders, Janet L. Dolgin Jan 2006

Debating Conflicts: Medicine, Commerce, And Contrasting Ethical Orders, Janet L. Dolgin

Hofstra Law Review

This article, prepared in the context of a conference at Hofstra in October 2006 ("Biomedical Research and the Law") considers contrasting responses to conflicts of interest occasioned by physicians' financial links to the pharmaceutical industry. Debate about the appropriate relationship between physicians and industry is grounded in the development known to historians of ideas as the shift in western culture from status to contract. The article summarizes the shift and then describes its consequences for and effects within the world of health care. The paper focuses on comparing an ethical order that continues to reflect traditional patterns in directing physicians' …

Courting Failure, Lynn M. Lopucki Jan 2006

Courting Failure, Lynn M. Lopucki

UF Law Faculty Publications

Courting Failure is the story of a bad venue statute that led to rampant forum shopping by large public companies. This forum shopping induced competition among bankruptcy courts for the cases. That competition in turn caused the unnecessary failure of many of the reorganizing companies and corrupted the United States Bankruptcy Courts. Congress has not acted to fix the statute because of Delaware's parochial interest in preserving the status quo.

Toward Healing And Restoration For All: Reframing Medical Malpractice Reform, Jonathan Todres Jan 2006

Toward Healing And Restoration For All: Reframing Medical Malpractice Reform, Jonathan Todres

Faculty Publications By Year

The medical malpractice liability system is blamed for everything from the high cost of health care to quality assurance issues. This Article suggests that that one of the problems with the current approach to medical malpractice is that legal remedies for medical error are not viewed as part of the continuum of care. Thus, a new model - driven by the principle of care and the goal of healing - is needed to address medical errors more effectively. Building from these core principles of care and healing, the author develops a new healing-centered framework which provides a better assessment of …

Through The Window: The Subject And The Voyeur's Gaze Within Cinema And Video, James A. Doohan Jan 2006

Through The Window: The Subject And The Voyeur's Gaze Within Cinema And Video, James A. Doohan

Theses : Honours

The underlying theme of this thesis is that cinema and related media create sites in which the viewer becomes a kind of voyeur, and in doing so normalises the voyeuristic gaze. Relationships between those who possess the gaze and those who become the object of that gaze are structured both ideologically and through the apparatus of the camera itself. These ideologies are arguably driven by a patriarchal paradigm, particularly within mainstream cinema where men appear to control the gaze and women are positioned as the object of that gaze. Even within cinema however that appears to be explicitly misogynistic like …

Lillian Smith's Strange Fruit : An Examination Of The Alterical Dimensions, Racial Consciousness, And Silence Of The Southern Woman, Syrena Bothe

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

In the 1944 publication of Strange Fruit. Lillian Smith attempts to identify the contradictions between external racial hierarchy, social class, and female whiteness by identifying them first as internal struggles that affected a southerner’s external existence. This is, instead, mis-read as a catastrophic love story between a white boy, Tracy Deen, and a black girl, Non Anderson.

However, this struggle of racial consciousness is a motif and driving force that heavily weights the intentions and choices of both white and black people in Strange Fruit. It is breath and instinct that lives in each southern inhabitant, it is the air …

The Influence Of Supplemental Feeding On The Movement Patterns Of The Southern Stingray, Dasyatis Americana, At Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands, Mark John Corcoran

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

There are currently over 300 sites in nearly 40 countries where a variety of marine animals are provided supplemental food by humans. The influence of this supplemental feeding on the behavior, physiology, growth, reproduction and movements of the animals involved is seldom known. Intentional supplemental feeding of the southern stingray, Dasyatis americana, has occurred at Stingray City (SC) and Stingray City Sandbar (SCS) at Grand Cayman since 1986. There are no specific regulations governing the feeding of D. americana at Grand Cayman, and neither the species nor the feeding sites are afforded any official protective status. This study investigated …

Scholarly Communication And Knowledge Management In American Zoos, Julia Innes Jan 2006

Scholarly Communication And Knowledge Management In American Zoos, Julia Innes

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

The researcher investigated whether frontline, tacit knowledge about zoo animals was captured by zookeepers, curators, researchers, veterinarians, and outside researchers and, if so, whether and how it was transmitted into the scholarly literature. A bibliometric analysis was done of a representative sample of peer-reviewed zoo research articles published between 1973 and 200 I. This was extended to grey literature and acknowledgements statements from the same period to obtain a more global picture.

Research participants were evaluated in terms of their contributions (journal articles, conference papers, or acknowledged research assistance). Changes were mapped chronologically and by profess ion. The participation of …
