Implications Of Implementing Hdtv Over Digital Subscriber Line Networks, Thomas J. Lantier
Implications Of Implementing Hdtv Over Digital Subscriber Line Networks, Thomas J. Lantier
Theses
This thesis addresses the different challenges a telecommunications company would face when trying to implement an HDTV video service over a Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) connection. Each challenge is discussed in detail and a technology, protocol, or method is suggested to overcome that particular challenge.
One of the biggest challenges is creating a network architecture that can provide enough bandwidth to support video over a network that was originally designed for voice traffic. The majority of the network connections to a customer premises in a telephony network consists of a copper pair. This type of connection is not optimal for …
Advanced Thermodynamic Analyses Of Energy Intensive Building Mechanical Systems, Erin N. George
Advanced Thermodynamic Analyses Of Energy Intensive Building Mechanical Systems, Erin N. George
Theses
A review of past research reveals that while exergetic analysis has been performed on various building mechanical systems, there has not been extensive efforts in the areas of air distribution systems or cooling plants. Motivations for this new work include demonstrating the merits of exergetic analysis in association with retrocommissioning (RCX) an existing building air handling unit (AHU), as well as conducting an advanced analysis on an existing chiller. The following research demonstrates the benefits of including a second law analysis in order to improve equipment operation based on lowered energy consumption and improved operation, and as a means for …
Parent Perceptions Of School Climate And Its Impact On Their Child's School Performance, Danielle Malinowski
Parent Perceptions Of School Climate And Its Impact On Their Child's School Performance, Danielle Malinowski
Theses
This study compared the relationship of student and parent perceptions of school climate to the student's academic performance and school problem behaviors (disciplinary referrals, unexcused absences, and tardiness). A sample of students (n=531), grades 7-12, completed the School Climate Survey (Haynes et al., 1996). Additional information was obtained regarding each student's academic performance and school problem behaviors. A randomly selected sample of parents were sent the School Climate Survey,
Parent Edition and were asked to voluntarily return them (n=45). Correlation results found no significant relationship between parent and student perceptions of school climate. A significant relationship was found between Parent …
Dynamic Analysis Of Hollow Tapered Isotropic And Composite Shafts Using Finite Element Techniques, Lindsay Larocca Parslow
Dynamic Analysis Of Hollow Tapered Isotropic And Composite Shafts Using Finite Element Techniques, Lindsay Larocca Parslow
Theses
Finite element techniques were used to analyze the dynamic characteristics of hollow tapered isotropic and composite shafts. Mathematical models of hollow tapered isotropic and composite shafts were developed, which were then discretized using Galerkin's Method to produce standard vibration equations. The solutions to the standard vibration equations were coded into two com puter programs, which can be used to calculate the torsional dynamic characteristics of an isotropic rotor system, and the coupled axial-torsional dynamic characteristics of a composite shaft. Several examples using each computer program are presented, illustrating their ability to predict natural frequencies and mode shapes of torsional systems.
The Consideration Of Camera Testing For Accurate Color Reproduction Within Museums And Institutions, Natalie Russo
The Consideration Of Camera Testing For Accurate Color Reproduction Within Museums And Institutions, Natalie Russo
Theses
The need for color accurate digital images for fine art reproduction is a reality faced by art museums and institutions around the world. It is the goal of most institutions to replace old, sometimes used and abused, transparency archives with digital image archives; many institutions have already begun this work. A number of different imaging systems with varied workflows, some idiosyncratic, are being used for this work. There is, therefore, an urgent need for the development and sharing of working methods that will ensure efficient, consistent, and color accurate results. These workflows must use camera systems to their fullest capability. …
Modeling Off-The-Shelf Pan/Tilt Cameras For Active Vision Systems, Yuriy Luzanov
Modeling Off-The-Shelf Pan/Tilt Cameras For Active Vision Systems, Yuriy Luzanov
Theses
There are many existing multicamera systems that perform object identification and track ing. Some applications include but are not limited to security surveillance and smart rooms. Yet there is still much work to be done in improving such systems to achieve a high level of automation while obtaining reasonable performance. Thus far design and implementation of these systems has been done using heuristic methods, primarily due to the complexity of the problem. Most importantiy, the performance of these systems is assessed by evaluating subjective quantities. The goal of this work is to take the first step in structured analysis and …
Tandi: Threat Assessment Of Network Data And Information, Jared D. Holsopple
Tandi: Threat Assessment Of Network Data And Information, Jared D. Holsopple
Theses
Current practice for combating cyber attacks typically use Intrusion Detection Sensors (IDSs) to passively detect and block multi-stage attacks. This work leverages Level-2 fu sion that correlates IDS alerts belonging to the same attacker, and proposes a threat assess ment algorithm to predict potential future attacker actions. The algorithm, TANDI, reduces the problem complexity by separating the models of the attacker's capability and opportu nity, and fuse the two to determine the attacker's intent. Unlike traditional Bayesian-based approaches, which require assigning a large number of edge probabilities, the proposed Level-3 fusion procedure uses only 4 parameters. TANDI has been implemented …
Modeling Design History In A Graphic Design Curriculum, Eunjin Jeong
Modeling Design History In A Graphic Design Curriculum, Eunjin Jeong
Theses
Graphic design history can be a valuable resource, contributing to graphic design students' understanding of design theories, and applied to problem solving exploration. According to many graphic design educators, current history courses are too often taught as superficial surveys of graphic style with no examinations of social, cultural, and political contexts, and have little interaction with practical studio courses. It is essential to bridge the gap between graphic design history and practical studio classes to further enhance graphic design education. This thesis will develop a means by which to show the tangible connection between graphic design history and applied problem-solving …
Upgrade, Aharon Charnov
Upgrade, Aharon Charnov
Theses
Description of the creation of a computer-animated film, "Upgrade," a project whose goal was to create a visually acceptable story that was enjoyable and coherent, without the benefit of substantive collaborators. The film depicts a young man's relationship with his new computer, as the (anthropomorphized) operating system loses her initial attractiveness and becomes bloated, slow, jealous and vengeful. Includes thesis proposal, revised script, original story boards, color stills, and code for generating facial expressions.
Parallelization Of A Maximum Parsimony Branch And Bound Algorithm For Phylogenetic Inference, Curtis J. Howard
Parallelization Of A Maximum Parsimony Branch And Bound Algorithm For Phylogenetic Inference, Curtis J. Howard
Theses
Phyiogenetic inference involves the reconstruction of evolutionary relationships among species in the form of branching diagrams called trees. Specifically, certain biological structures common to all living organisms, such as morphological characteristics, protein sequences or DNA sequences can be compared Differences and similarities in these characteristics among species are used to reconstruct the evolutionary relationships and draw trees. Many methods of tree reconstruction are currently used. The method of maximum parsimony for phyiogenetic inference is a widely used algorithm which employs the hypothesis that the most likely tree for a given group of data will be the one which uses the …
A Multicamera System For Gesture Tracking With Three Dimensional Hand Pose Estimation, Evan M. Clark
A Multicamera System For Gesture Tracking With Three Dimensional Hand Pose Estimation, Evan M. Clark
Theses
The goal of any visual tracking system is to successfully detect then follow an object of interest through a sequence of images. The difficulty of tracking an object depends on the dynamics, the motion and the characteristics of the object as well as on the environ ment. For example, tracking an articulated, self-occluding object such as a signing hand has proven to be a very difficult problem. The focus of this work is on tracking and pose estimation with applications to hand gesture interpretation. An approach that attempts to integrate the simplicity of a region tracker with single hand 3D …
Parameric Decomposition For Evaluating Metamerism, Zhaojian Li
Parameric Decomposition For Evaluating Metamerism, Zhaojian Li
Theses
In those industries in which materials are colored to close specifications, a means of evaluating the degree of metamerism of colored objects is of considerable importance. Based on Wyszecki's hypothesis and its application to quantifying metamerism as described by Fairman, parameric decomposition is a technique to adjust one spectrum of a parameric match in order to achieve a perfect (metameric) match under a specific illumination and observer condition. This method can be viewed as batch correction using three "colorants" where the color-mixing model is linear in reflectance.
The research in this thesis presented these methods using the basis functions from …
Simultaneous Visual Cryptography, Oliver Kikic
Simultaneous Visual Cryptography, Oliver Kikic
Theses
A visual cryptography scheme (VCS), as proposed by M. Naor and A. Shamir, encodes a secret image into n different shares. The scheme ensures that only certain designated combinations of shares can recover the original image, while other combinations yield, in probabilistic sense, no information about the secret image. In this thesis, we show that there exist simultaneous visual cryptography schemes (SVCS), i.e. cryptographic schemes that allow for multiple secret images to be encoded across a set of n shares. The essential part of this research is to derive a set of formal definitions used to construct a valid SVCS …
Synthesis And Characterization Of Potassium Dihydrogen Phosphate (Kdp) Nanocomposites., Mufadal Ayubali-Mohamedali
Synthesis And Characterization Of Potassium Dihydrogen Phosphate (Kdp) Nanocomposites., Mufadal Ayubali-Mohamedali
Theses
Potassium Dihydrogen Phosphate (KDP) nanocrystals were synthesized in micellar solutions of block copolymers of polystyrene (PS) and poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) in toluene/Dimethoxyethane solvent. The synthetic procedure entailed the doping of the block copolymer solutions with phosphoric acid and the stochiometric neutralization of the aciddoped system with potassium hydroxide (KOH). The neutralization reaction was localized within the core of the micelle which in effect served as a hanoreactor or nanovessel for the reaction.
Micellization of the block copolymer molecules was induced upon doping the solution with phosphoric acid which resulted in ion dipole binding of the protons to the ethylene oxide …
Nonverbal Vocal Interface, Michael J. Murdoch
Nonverbal Vocal Interface, Michael J. Murdoch
Theses
Nonverbal vocal interface, meaning the use of non-speech vocal sounds such as "oooh" and "ahhh" as input to a computer, provides an interesting and useful input modality for a graphical user interface. Nonverbal vocal interface is a novel improvement over speech-based solutions because voiced sounds may be smoothly modulated, meaning they are well suited to control of continuous variables such as cursor position, while spoken commands are inherently discrete. A graphical user interface is an excellent environment for vocal input because instantaneous visual feedback is crucial to usability, enabling users to see the results of their vocalizations and learn the …
Optimal Design Of Ink Spectra For Multiple-Ink Color Reproduction, Yongda Chen
Optimal Design Of Ink Spectra For Multiple-Ink Color Reproduction, Yongda Chen
Theses
Conventional four-color printing systems are limited by a relative small color gamut, poor color constancy, and a high degree metamerism. In this dissertation, these problems were addressed by increasing the ink number, optimizing the spectral ink curves, and the lookup tables for multiple-ink printing. First, a computer simulation was performed to investigate the optimum combinations of different ink number to maximize the color gamut for halftoning printing. By analyzing the color gamuts achieved by real ink sets and virtual ink sets, the conclusions were drawn that the color gamut can be improved by increasing ink number and optimizing spectral ink …

Streak Detection In Mottled And Noisy Images, Hector Santos
Streak Detection In Mottled And Noisy Images, Hector Santos
Theses
This thesis describes an algorithm for detecting streaks in printed images using adaptive window-based image projections and maximization of mutual information. To this effect, projections are computed across the entire image at different window sizes. The traces collected from the projections are correlated using maximization of mutual information to pinpoint streak locations and widths using a peak detection algorithm. Finally, for a given peak, the window size is changed adaptively to identify and locate the intensity and length of the corresponding streak while maximizing signal to noise ratio. Results on synthetic and real-life images are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness …

The Work Of Fred Troller: An Evaluative Study Of A Graphic Designer, Tara Markert
Theses
This thesis will provide a process to help graphic design scholars and historians conduct an evaluation of a designer whose work has been rarely documented within a specific design style. Through implementation of this model of research and evaluation, graphic design scholars will not only be able to identify that designer's philosophy and personal style, they will also recognize the value of studying within a specific style of graphic design. This evaluation process includes placing the work of the rarely documented designer beside the work of pioneers in this stylistic idiom in order to highlight similarities of thought, process, form …
Development And Test Of A Kinematical Method For Estimating Rotation Using The Acceleration Of A Rigid Body, Douglas A. Carr
Development And Test Of A Kinematical Method For Estimating Rotation Using The Acceleration Of A Rigid Body, Douglas A. Carr
Theses
In this work, the feasibility of a novel method for combining inertial information gathered from accelerometers to calculate an estimate for rotational information independent of rate gyro measurements is investigated. The concept uses two, distinctly placed, parallel accelerometers on a rigid body to estimate rotational acceleration by comparing the difference in sensed acceleration caused by rotation. Since the estimation is independent of available rate gyro data, optimization of drift and scale factors can be used to calibrate the accelerometers in a real time fashion. Experimental trials were conducted on a small mobile robotic platform, due to the eventual objective of …

A Tribute To Lewis H. Larue, James Boyd White
Articles
Lash has been a good friend for many years, and it is a pleasure to have this opportunity to reflect about him. I well remember our first meeting, in the late 1970s. He had been to a meeting in Wisconsin-the first meeting of the Critical Legal Studies Conference, as I remember-and stopped to spend the night in Chicago on the way home. We had corresponded a couple of times, but never met, and what a pleasure it was to meet him: full of intelligence, openness, and laughter, with a moral center and a deep sense of human limitation. We talked …

An Improved Multi-Objective Evolutionary Algorithm With Adaptable Parameters, Khoa Duc Tran
An Improved Multi-Objective Evolutionary Algorithm With Adaptable Parameters, Khoa Duc Tran
CCAC Theses and Dissertations
Multi-Objective Evolutionary Algorithms (MOEAs) are not easy to use because they require parameter tunings of three main parameters - population size, crossover probability, and mutation probability - in order to achieve desirable solutions and performance for an arbitrary complex problem. Moreover, the use of fixed parameter settings may lead to slow convergence and sub-optimal solutions. This dissertation develops a MOEA with self-adaptive crossover, self-adaptive mutation, and adaptive population size parameters for automating the process of adjusting appropriate parameter values in order to make the MOEA more efficient, simple to use and available to more users. The MOEA with adaptable parameters …

Privacy Policies: A Study Of Their Use Among Online Canadian Pharmacies, Joanne Kuzma
CCAC Theses and Dissertations
The use of online Canadian pharmacies has grown over the past decade due to lower cost medications and ease of use. In order for these firms to gain business and marketing information, they collect a variety of consumer data. This has raised concerns among consumers as to privacy issues of the data collected by these online firms. However, researchers have not effectively examined how online consumers value specific privacy factors when deciding whether to use the sites. Also, studies have not determined if many of these sites have comprehensive privacy policies that indicate if they protect consumers' data for a …
Information Policies And Practices Of Knowledge Management(Km) As Related To The Development Of The Global Aviation Information Network(Gain)- An Applied Case Study And Taxonomy Development, Jeffrey S. Forrest
CCAC Theses and Dissertations
The Global Aviation Information Network (GAIN) was initiated in response to U.S. Government policies seeking to reduce airline accidents. GAIN was to disseminate airline or aviation safety information in environments where public disclosure impedes the diffusion of information. Government legislation such as the U.S. Freedom of Information Act and other information policies create risks of public disclosure to those reporting information. Therefore, the problem investigated in this research was to identity and evaluate potential solutions to policy issues in public disclosure that prevent the collection and sharing of aviation safety information.
Interactions between GAIN, information policy, and knowledge management (KM) …

CCAC Theses and Dissertations
The offering of online classes has been growing at an incredible rate. Many institutions coerce their instructors into teaching online classes even if they are not prepared. If teachers are unprepared when they teach, there is a negative effect on the students and can jeopardize the reputation of the institution. In order to teach over the Internet, instructors need to learn new competencies. Students in online classes are usually not traditional students. In addition, there can be miscommunication in online classes, because there are no visual cues. Instructors need to learn new communication strategies as well as teaching strategies for …
Using Neural Networks To Develop A New Model To Screen Applicants For Apartment Rentals, Michael T. Furick
Using Neural Networks To Develop A New Model To Screen Applicants For Apartment Rentals, Michael T. Furick
CCAC Theses and Dissertations
Credit scoring is a mathematical means of summarizing a consumer's credit and financial history into a three-digit number. This number provides an easy means of identifying and sorting consumer behavior into categories based on their financial history. To select applicants for loans and to set interest rates on loans, banks and financial institutions routinely use credit scoring. Auto insurance companies also use scoring to decide which consumers will be offered auto insurance and to set the price for auto insurance. Despite success in these two industries, scoring does not appear to be effective in the apartment rental industry in picking …
