Generalized Geologic Map For Land-Use Planning: Owen County, Kentucky, Daniel I. Carey, Cam Flanders

Map and Chart--KGS

This map is not intended to be used for selecting individual sites. Its purpose is to inform land-use planners, government officials, and the public in a general way about geologic bedrock conditions that affect the selection of sites for various purposes. The properties of thick soils may supercede those of the underlying bedrock and should be considered on a site-to-site basis. At any site, it is important to understand the characteristics of both the soils and the underlying rock.

Multi-Axial Anisotropic Material Behavior Using A Collection Of Yield Surfaces To Model The Stress-Space Coupling Phenomena, Mirjana Marusic Jan 2006

Multi-Axial Anisotropic Material Behavior Using A Collection Of Yield Surfaces To Model The Stress-Space Coupling Phenomena, Mirjana Marusic

Master's Theses and Capstones

In the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake in the San Francisco-Bay area and also the 1994 Northridge earthquake in Southern California, several buildings experienced significant damage because of inadequate member design. The existing codes of practice used for the structural design approximate the effects of nonlinear material behavior. This work formulates a nonlinear anisotropic material model for systems subjected to biaxial loading conditions such that the true nature of material degradation can be identified. This would aide structural designers in being able to predict accurate cyclic deformations under large earthquake events. The proposed model investigates anisotropic material behavior under bi-axial loading …

Development And Characterization Of A Side Scan Sonar Towfish Stabilization Device, Rebecca Ann Conrad Jan 2006

Development And Characterization Of A Side Scan Sonar Towfish Stabilization Device, Rebecca Ann Conrad

Master's Theses and Capstones

The attitude of a side scan sonar towfish may introduce artifacts into the imagery when the towfish attitude exhibits a significant mean offset from horizontal and/or exhibits significant variations over time. The Smart Tail was designed by Boeing Australia for stabilizing the attitude of a Klein System 5000 towfish. This report describes the development and testing of a closed-loop controller for towfish attitude based on the Smart Tail's movable elevators. Transient and steady state response of the towfish pitch and roll motion were evaluated in a tow tank at speeds up to 6 knots. Mathematical modeling and simulation were used …

Hole Mobility Limit Of Amorphous Silicon Solar Cells, Jiang Liang, Eric A. Schiff, S. Guha, Baojie Yan, Jeff Yang Jan 2006

Hole Mobility Limit Of Amorphous Silicon Solar Cells, Jiang Liang, Eric A. Schiff, S. Guha, Baojie Yan, Jeff Yang

Physics - All Scholarship

We present temperature-dependent measurements and modeling for a thickness series of hydrogenated amorphous silicon nip solar cells. The comparison indicates that the maximum power density (PMAX) from the as-deposited cells has achieved the hole-mobility limit established by valence bandtail trapping, and PMAX is thus not significantly limited by intrinsic-layer dangling bonds or by the doped layers and interfaces. Measurements of the temperature-dependent properties of light-soaked cells show that the properties of as-deposited and light-soaked cells converge below 250 K; a model perturbing the valence band tail traps with a density of dangling bonds accounts adequately for the convergence effect.

Temperature Dependence Of The Electron Diffusion Coefficient In Electrolyte-Filled Tio2 Nanoparticle Films: Evidence Against Multiple Trapping In Exponential Conduction-Band Tails, Nikos Kopidakis, Kurt D. Benkstein, Jao Van De Lagemaat, Quan Yuan, Eric A. Schiff Jan 2006

Temperature Dependence Of The Electron Diffusion Coefficient In Electrolyte-Filled Tio2 Nanoparticle Films: Evidence Against Multiple Trapping In Exponential Conduction-Band Tails, Nikos Kopidakis, Kurt D. Benkstein, Jao Van De Lagemaat, Quan Yuan, Eric A. Schiff

Physics - All Scholarship

The temperature and photoexcitation density dependences of the electron transport dynamics in electrolytefilled mesoporous TiO2 nanoparticle films were investigated by transient photocurrent measurements. The thermal activation energy of the diffusion coefficient of photogenerated electrons ranged from 0.19–0.27 eV, depending on the specific sample studied. The diffusion coefficient also depends strongly on the photoexcitation density; however, the activation energy has little, if any, dependence on the photoexcitation density. The light intensity dependence can be used to infer temperature-independent dispersion parameters in the range 0.3–0.5. These results are inconsistent with the widely used transport model that assumes multiple trapping of electrons in …

In this paper we investigate conditions on the features of a continuous kernel so that it may approximate an arbitrary continuous target function uniformly on any compact subset of the input space. A number of concrete examples are given of kernels with this universal approximating property.

Testing For Cointegrating Rank Via Model Selection: Evidence From 165 Data Sets, Badi H. Baltagi, Zijun Wang Jan 2006

Testing For Cointegrating Rank Via Model Selection: Evidence From 165 Data Sets, Badi H. Baltagi, Zijun Wang

Center for Policy Research

The model selection approach has been proposed as an alternative to the popular tests for cointegration such as the residual-based ADF test and the system-based trace test. Using information criteria, we conduct cointegration tests on 165 data sets used in published studies. The empirical results demonstrate the usefulness of the model selection approach for applied researchers.

Reliability Modeling In Spatially Distributed Logistics System, Ni Wang, Jye-Chyi Lu, Paul H. Kvam Jan 2006

Reliability Modeling In Spatially Distributed Logistics System, Ni Wang, Jye-Chyi Lu, Paul H. Kvam

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

This article proposes methods for modeling service reliability in a supply chain. The logistics system in a supply chain typically consists of thousands of retail stores along with multiple distribution centers (DC). Products are transported between DC & stores through multiple routes. The service reliability depends on DC location layouts, distances from DC to stores, time requirements for product replenishing at stores, DC's capability for supporting store demands, and the connectivity of transportation routes. Contingent events such as labor disputes, bad weather, road conditions, traffic situations, and even terrorist threats can have great impacts on a system's reliability. Given the …

A Logistic Regression/Markov Chain Model For Ncaa Basketball, Paul H. Kvam, Joel Sokol Jan 2006

A Logistic Regression/Markov Chain Model For Ncaa Basketball, Paul H. Kvam, Joel Sokol

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

Each year, more than $3 billion is wagered on the NCAA Division I men’s basketball tournament. Most of that money is wagered in pools where the object is to correctly predict winners of each game, with emphasis on the last four teams remaining (the Final Four). In this paper, we present a combined logistic regression/Markov chain model for predicting the outcome of NCAA tournament games given only basic input data. Over the past 6 years, our model has been significantly more successful than the other common methods such as tournament seedings, the AP and ESPN/USA Today polls, the RPI, and …

Statistical Reliability With Applications, Paul H. Kvam, Jye-Chyi Lu

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

This chapter reviews fundamental ideas in reliability theory and inference. The first part of the chapter accounts for lifetime distributions that are used in engineering reliability analyis, including general properties of reliability distributions that pertain to lifetime for manufactured products. Certain distributions are formulated on the basis of simple physical properties, and other are more or less empirical. The first part of the chapter ends with a description of graphical and analytical methods to find appropriate lifetime distributions for a set of failure data.

The second part of the chapter describes statistical methods for analyzing reliability data, including maximum likelihood …

Two specific examples are given in this paper.

Sustainability Reporting At Higher Education Institutions, Robert Heilmayr Jan 2006

Sustainability Reporting At Higher Education Institutions, Robert Heilmayr

CMC Senior Theses

Multiple declarations, governmental and non-profit organizations and universities have issued a call for proper reporting of social and environmental impacts and initiatives within academia. Such reporting can increase awareness of environmental and social impacts, encourage development of sustainable policy and build a campus culture more committed to sustainability. Sustainability reporting at Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) has the added benefit of being a powerful teaching aid. This paper follows multiple lines of inquiry in order to determine whether HEIs are taking advantage of the opportunities afforded by sustainability reporting. The analysis evaluates the history of sustainability reporting at HEIs and compares …

Antitrust And Inefficient Joint Ventures: Why Sports Leagues Should Look More Like Mcdonald's And Less Like The United Nations, Stephen F. Ross, Stefan Szymanski Jan 2006

Antitrust And Inefficient Joint Ventures: Why Sports Leagues Should Look More Like Mcdonald's And Less Like The United Nations, Stephen F. Ross, Stefan Szymanski

Faculty Scholarship

Antitrust law generally favors joint ventures that allow separate firms to integrate economic functions while continuing to compete as independent entities. In evaluating the risks to competition that joint ventures could pose, insufficient attention has been paid to the risk that joint ventures with market power may be structured so that the parties, acting in their independent self interest, will prevent the venture from providing innovative goods and services responsive to consumer demand. In these cases, it may be better if a single firm provided services rather than having them provided jointly.

We illustrate this problem by challenging the conventional …

Specific Antibodies To Recombinant Allergens Of Aspergillus Fumigatus In Cystic Fibrosis Patients With Abpa, Viswanath P. Kurup, Alan P. Knutsen, Richard B. Moss, Naveen K. Bansal Jan 2006

Specific Antibodies To Recombinant Allergens Of Aspergillus Fumigatus In Cystic Fibrosis Patients With Abpa, Viswanath P. Kurup, Alan P. Knutsen, Richard B. Moss, Naveen K. Bansal

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

Background

Aspergillus fumigatus, a widely distributed fungus, has been implicated in causing life threatening infections as well as severe asthma and allergic diseases in man. Allergic affliction like allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA) is a disabling lung disease frequently seen in patients with asthma and cystic fibrosis. Immunodiagnosis of the former is comparatively easier due to the availability of purified antigens and sensitive methods. However, this is not true with cystic fibrosis patients where the prevalence of ABPA is fairly high and the morbidity and mortality are significant.

Methods

In the present study, we have evaluated purified recombinant allergens from …

A Curvature-Mediated Mechanism For Localization Of Lipids To Bacterial Poles, Kerwyn Casey Huang, Ranjan Mukhopadhyay, Ned S. Wingreen Jan 2006

A Curvature-Mediated Mechanism For Localization Of Lipids To Bacterial Poles, Kerwyn Casey Huang, Ranjan Mukhopadhyay, Ned S. Wingreen

Physics

Subcellular protein localization is a universal feature of eukaryotic cells, and the ubiquity of protein localization in prokaryotic species is now acquiring greater appreciation. Though some targeting anchors are known, the origin of polar and division-site localization remains mysterious for a large fraction of bacterial proteins. Ultimately, the molecular components responsible for such symmetry breaking must employ a high degree of self-organization. Here we propose a novel physical mechanism, based on the two-dimensional curvature of the membrane, for spontaneous lipid targeting to the poles and division site of rod-shaped bacterial cells. If one of the membrane components has a large …

The Chang-Los-Suszko Theorem In A Topological Setting, Paul Bankston Jan 2006

The Chang-Los-Suszko Theorem In A Topological Setting, Paul Bankston

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

The Chang-Łoś-Suszko theorem of first-order model theory characterizes universal-existential classes of models as just those elementary classes that are closed under unions of chains. This theorem can then be used to equate two model-theoretic closure conditions for elementary classes; namely unions of chains and existential substructures. In the present paper we prove a topological analogue and indicate some applications.

Stereotype Susceptibility Narrows The Gender Gap In Imagined Self-Rotation Performance, Maryjane Wraga, Lauren Duncan, Emily C. Jacobs, Molly Helt, Jessica Church Jan 2006

Stereotype Susceptibility Narrows The Gender Gap In Imagined Self-Rotation Performance, Maryjane Wraga, Lauren Duncan, Emily C. Jacobs, Molly Helt, Jessica Church

Psychology: Faculty Publications

Three studies examined the impact of stereotype messages on men's and women's performance of a mental rotation task involving imagined self-rotations. Experiment 1 established baseline differences between men and women; women made 12% more errors than did men. Experiment 2 found that exposure to a positive stereotype message enhanced women's performance in comparison with that of another group of women who received neutral information. In Experiment 3, men who were exposed to the same stereotype message emphasizing a female advantage made more errors than did male controls, and the magnitude of error was similar to that for women from Experiment …

Applying The Laws Of Logic To The Logic Of Laws, Hillel Bavli Jan 2006

Applying The Laws Of Logic To The Logic Of Laws, Hillel Bavli

Fordham Urban Law Journal

The article begins by discussing the difficulties of proving consistency within a formal legal system generally. After establishing the importance of a formalized legal model as a prerequisite of rigorous examination of consistency, it proceeds to investigate issues intrinsic to the current system of law that may prevent formalization of a just legal system as currently conceived. The article argues that flexibility inherent in a just legal system may foreclose the possibility of legal formalization or any comprehensive model thereof. The article concludes, however, that a model whose purpose is the examination of consistency within a system need not necessarily …

Monetizing The Benefits Of Risk And Environmental Regulation, W. Kip Viscusi Jan 2006

Monetizing The Benefits Of Risk And Environmental Regulation, W. Kip Viscusi

Fordham Urban Law Journal

The Article responds to the school of thought reflected in the book "Priceless: On Knowing the Price of Everything and the Value of Nothing" that opposes the economists' attempts to monetize the value of environmental amenities and the value of risks to life and health. It applies the value of statistical life ("VSL") concept to regulatory decisions in order to decide whether the adoption of a regulation makes economic sense. VSL measures the value of life, as judged by measuring the amount of risk of injury workers in a particular industry are willing to take on, and the costs associated …

How Much Is That Doggy In The Window? The Inevitably Unsatisfying Duty To Monetize, Adam F. Scales Jan 2006

How Much Is That Doggy In The Window? The Inevitably Unsatisfying Duty To Monetize, Adam F. Scales

Fordham Urban Law Journal

The Article is in response to Professor Kip Viscusi's "Monetizing the Benefits of Risk and Environmental Regulation." It emphasizes several issues Viscusi's "value of a statistical life" (VSL) methodology fails to capture: (1) the distinction and difference in value between willingness to pay for a regulation and willingness to accept; (2) the fact that the many risks, for which regulations have been adopted, are so slight that the value to many is actually the value of not seeing someone else suffer harm in the absence of regulation; (3) real life irrational decision-making does not easily fit into an economic value; …

Effects Of Rural High School Size And Socioeconomic Status On Achievement Of Tenth Graders, Peter W. O'Rourke Jan 2006

Effects Of Rural High School Size And Socioeconomic Status On Achievement Of Tenth Graders, Peter W. O'Rourke

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The current emphasis on the equal access to a qualityEducation for all children, highlighted in the federal No Child Left Behind (NCLB) legislation and Public Law 221 in Indiana has stimulated much discussion on the ability of schools urban, suburban, and rural to meet this challenge. Moreover, the thrust of currentEducational initiatives in Indiana emphasize the closing of achievement gaps between various student cohorts; of particular interest is the capacity of rural high schools to reduce this gap for economically disadvantaged students. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of enrollment size and socioeconomicstatus (SES) as measured …
