Simultaneous Search, Hector Chade, Lones Smith

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We introduce and solve a new class of “downward-recursive” static portfolio choice problems. An individual simultaneously chooses among ranked stochastic options, and each choice is costly. In the motivational application, just one may be exercised from those that succeed. This often emerges in practice, such as when a student applies to many colleges. We show that a greedy algorithm finds the optimal set. The optimal choices are “less aggressive” than the sequentially optimal ones, but “more aggressive” than the best singletons. The optimal set in general contains gaps. We provide a comparative static on the chosen set.

Deficit Irrigation Analysis Of Red Pepper (Capsicum Annum L.) Using The Mathematical Optimisation Method, Cafer Gençoğlan, Serpi̇l Gençoğlan, Cuma Akbay, İsmet Boz

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

The objectives of this study were to analyse deficit irrigation with the mathematical optimisation method using the water-yield relationship and cost functions of red pepper, and to determine alternative deficit irrigation water levels. For this purpose, the effect of 5 different irrigation levels (I_1, I_2, I_3, I_4, and I_5) on dry yield (DY) was determined using a line source sprinkler irrigation system in Kahramanmaraş, Turkey in 1999 and 2000. The average water amounts applied with I_1 (non-water stress treatment) and I_5 (water stress treatment) for the 2 years were 913 and 296 mm, and I_2, I_3, and I_4 varied between …

Spectroscopic Investigation Of Metal-Substitution Of Cytochrome C, Deepthi Kandi Jan 2006

Spectroscopic Investigation Of Metal-Substitution Of Cytochrome C, Deepthi Kandi

Masters Theses

We study, by absorbance spectroscopy, the incorporation of various metal ions (Cu²+ and Zn2*) into metal-free porphyrin cytochrome c (H₂cyt) as well as the various conformational forms of metal-substituted cytochromes. The H2cyt and desired metalsubstituted cytochromes have significantly different absorption spectra, providing a simple means of monitoring the incorporation of Cu²* or Zn2* into the empty porphyrin prosthetic group. The rates of metal-ion incorporation were studied under protein denaturating conditions using chemical denaturants, like urea and guanidine hydrochloride (GuHCI), and temperature that partially and completely unfold H2cyt, facilitating the incorporation of a metal ion. Moreover, the structural stability of copper …

The Study Of Carbon Acylation Of Highly Delocalized Enolates Using Catalytic Dmap On 3-Phenyl Benzofuranone Derivatives, Xiguang Zhao

Masters Theses

Benzofuranones along with their derivatives compose a diverse array of natural products and drugs, and show a wide variety of biological effects. Several synthetic methods have been published that describe the preparation of 2-(3H)-benzofuranones having mono alkyl or aryl substituents attached to the fused furanone ring with moderate to high yields. To date, reports describing the preparation of disubstituted 2-(3H)-benzofuranones, especially with one acyl group, are rare. Early approaches are limited by low yields, economical expenditure and environmental risk.

Direct acylation of benzofuranones consistently provides O-acylated isomers rather than C-acylated isomers, which are desired products in the great majority of …

Boundary-Crossers: Observation, Chance, And Change In The Fiction Of Thomas Hardy, D. Levi Woolen-Danner Jan 2006

Boundary-Crossers: Observation, Chance, And Change In The Fiction Of Thomas Hardy, D. Levi Woolen-Danner

Masters Theses

Thomas Hardy creates in his fiction a world that demands love lead to failure. His hero and heroine are tragic nearly without exception, as if desire were not just a burden, but a catalyst for disaster. Perhaps this is due to the period in which Hardy was living, and his need to reconcile his memories of an idyllic past with the dramatic social and econonomic changes contemporary to his period of novel-writing. Perhaps he is trying to discover a new model of living-one that will not be trapped by human desires. He has created a figure, one I refer to …

Explicit Timing As An Intervention For Children With Adhd, Monica Fischer Girten Jan 2006

Explicit Timing As An Intervention For Children With Adhd, Monica Fischer Girten

Masters Theses

Explicit timing is a procedure that alerts students of their time limits when completing academic tasks. Research on this procedure first emerged in the mid 1970's, and has focused on the effectiveness of this technique for increasing academic response rate. Empirical studies have demonstrated that the explicit timing procedure can increase response rate for a variety of academic skills including mathematics performance, writing composition and reading. However, few studies have focused on the effectiveness of this procedure on special populations, such as students with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). The purpose of the current study was to determine whether explicit …

Using Social Stories To Correct Social Skills Deficits In A Student With A Learning Disability, April Larson-Evangelista

Masters Theses

Social stories have been deemed an effective intervention for people with autism (e.g., Richard, 2000). The purpose of the present study was to investigate the use of social stories with a participant not diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder. The participant was an 8 year-old second-grade girl of average intelligence who was diagnosed with a learning disability in mathematics. Upon consulting with her classroom teacher, two social skills were identified as the target behaviors to be addressed in the present study. The first prominent behavioral concern was violation of others' personal space or standing too close to others. The second …

A Correlation Study Between Employee Perception And Customer Satisfaction In An Automotive Manufacturing Corporation, Jason Travis Felton Jan 2006

A Correlation Study Between Employee Perception And Customer Satisfaction In An Automotive Manufacturing Corporation, Jason Travis Felton

Masters Theses

Organizations may be able to utilize internal measures of customer and employee satisfaction in order to get a head start on potential customer satisfaction issues. Correlation analysis is employed to determine significance between measures of employee perception and the pulse of customer satisfaction. Employee perceptions and external customer satisfaction metrics are quantified across 3 manufacturing sites to determine relationships between key indicators. Validated survey questions are compiled statistically in composite groups in order to evaluate employee perceptions of customer satisfaction efforts and employee satisfaction efforts. Results are evaluated using Pearson product moment "r". Results indicate a positive correlation exists between …

Parameterization Of Fuel Cell Stack Voltage: Issues On Sensitivity, Cell-To-Cell Variation, And Transient Response, Ariette L. Schilter, Denise A. Mckay, Anna G. Stefanopoulou

Engineering: Faculty Publications

We present here a calibrated and experimentally validated lumped parameter model of fuel cell polarization for a hydrogen fed multi-cell, low-pressure, proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell stack. The experimental methodology devised for calibrating the model was completed on a 24 cell, 300 cm2 stack with GORE™ PRIMERA® Series 5620 membranes. The predicted cell voltage is a static function of current density, stack temperature, reactant partial pressures, and membrane water content. The maximum prediction error associated with the sensor resolutions used for the calibration is determined along with a discussion of the model sensitivity to physical variables. The expected standard …

The Phantom Philosophy? An Empirical Investigation Of Legal Interpretation, Jason J. Czarnezki Jan 2006

The Phantom Philosophy? An Empirical Investigation Of Legal Interpretation, Jason J. Czarnezki

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

This Article tests a model of judicial decisionmaking that incorporates elements of both the attitudinal model and the legal model, along with measures of institutional and judicial background characteristics such as collegiality and trial court experience. We develop a measure of interpretive philosophy relying primarily on judicial opinions, which we code for certain indicators of traditional interpretive approaches (i.e., the use of interpretive tools). The critical question is whether judges with similar interpretive philosophies are more likely to agree with one another when deciding cases. Our general finding is that ideology and interpretive philosophy are not significant predictors of agreement. …

Cia V. Sims: Mosaic Theory And Government Attitude, Christina E. Wells

Faculty Publications

In CIA v. Sims, the United States Supreme Court held that the CIA could withhold information about controversial government-sponsored psychological experiments in response to Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests. The Court reasoned that the requested information would reveal intelligence sources related to national defense, which were specifically protected from disclosure under the National Security Act of 1947. Accordingly, the Court concluded that the CIA could refuse to disclose the information under FOIA Exemption 3, which allows withholding of information “specifically exempted from disclosure by statute.” Numerous scholars assailed Sims, arguing that the Court's broad reading of the National Security …

Model Generation For Generalized Quantifiers Via Answer Set Programming, Yuliya Lierler, Günther Görz

Computer Science Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

For the semantic evaluation of natural language sentences, in particular those containing generalized quantifiers, we subscribe to the generate and test methodology to produce models of such sentences. These models are considered as means by which the sentences can be interpreted within a natural language processing system. The goal of this paper is to demonstrate that answer set programming is a simple, efficient and particularly well suited model generation technique for this purpose, leading to a straightforward implementation.

Ending The Circuit Split Over Use Of A Competing Mark In Advertising—The Blackstone Code, 5 J. Marshall Rev. Intell. Prop. L. 157 (2006), Douglas L. Rogers

UIC Review of Intellectual Property Law

In KP Permanent, the Supreme Court recently confirmed that plaintiffs in trademark infringement cases under the Lanham Act have the burden of proving likelihood of confusion. As such, this article argues that lower courts do not have the authority to switch that burden of proof for such claims, even though they involve nominative uses (in which defendant is using the actual mark of plaintiff as plaintiff’s source identifier and not as a description of the defendant's products or services). This article also argues that because Congress created affirmative fair use defenses for descriptive uses of marks and for trademark dilution, …

The Ip Asset Class: Protecting And Unlocking Inherent Value, 5 J. Marshall Rev. Intell. Prop. L. 402 (2006), Stephen Bennett

UIC Review of Intellectual Property Law

Intangible inputs are as important, or more important, to wealth creation than tangible assets and corporate leaders are beginning to recognize the value of their intangible assets. Investors are also focusing on companies whose primary property value is largely intangible intellectual property. IP investment strategies involve either attempts to raise and employ immediate capital through securitization or to protect the value of IP through insurance. The nexus between finance and IP presents a revenue opportunity for law firms. There is already a contingent of the legal community that services clients concerning IP issues but only a much smaller niche segment …

Law Faculty Articles and Essays

This paper is divided into four parts. Part one consists of a general overview of the problem of environmental discrimination. Part two gives a brief discussion of relevant Equal Protection jurisprudence. The section begins with a summary of general Equal Protection law. Then, the section analyzes the primary cases that established the foundation of modem-day Equal Protection doctrine. Part three examines the current application of the intent requirement in environmental discrimination cases. To that end, the section reviews the outcome of three of the early environmental discrimination cases, and speculates about the components that are necessary to prepare a successful …

Measurement Of Ammonium By Ion Chromatography In High Sodium Concentration, Sharon Klein Jan 2006

Measurement Of Ammonium By Ion Chromatography In High Sodium Concentration, Sharon Klein

The Journal of Undergraduate Research

Chemical analysis of Antarctic ice cores provides valuable information on the history and dynamics of the atmosphere environment. The ice core samples contain trace amounts of ammonium, sodium, and other ionic chemical species, which are usually, measured using ion chromatography. High concentrations of sodium may interfere with the accurate and precise measurement of ammonium, due to insufficient resolution of their chromatographic peaks. The extent of the interference is investigated in this project by quantitative determination of the ammonium concentration in solutions of various ammonium and sodium concentrations. A criterion of 20% relative error of measured ammonium concentration is used to …

Dynamical Multi-Body Gyroscopic Motion Simulation, Andy Ries, Johnathan Deppe Jan 2006

Dynamical Multi-Body Gyroscopic Motion Simulation, Andy Ries, Johnathan Deppe

The Journal of Undergraduate Research

In this paper, the motion of a three-degree-of-freedom gyro scope is analyzed in three different force scenarios. The equations of motion for the gyroscope are derived by hand as well as derived by the dynamical analysis software, Autolev These equations are compared with each other to show the consistency between the two methods and the time savings of using software applications for analyzing complex multi-body dynamical systems. The Autolev™ program drastically reduced the workload for determining the motion equations and the program even compiled Matlab code that was used to produce numerical values to show the respective motion of each …

All Digital Design And Implementaion Of Proportional-Integral-Derivative (Pid) Controller, Hui Hui Chin Jan 2006

All Digital Design And Implementaion Of Proportional-Integral-Derivative (Pid) Controller, Hui Hui Chin

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Due to the prevalence of pulse encoders for system state information, an all-digital proportional-integral-derivative (ADPID) is proposed as an alternative to traditional analog and digital PID controllers. The basic concept of an ADPID stems from the use of pulse-width-modulation (PWM) control signals for continuous-time dynamical systems, in that the controllers proportional, integral and derivative actions are converted into pulses by means of standard up-down digital counters and other digital logic devices. An ADPID eliminates the need for analog-digital and digital-analog conversion, which can be costly and may introduce error and delay into the system. In the proposed ADPID, the unaltered …

Power Reduction By Dynamically Varying Sampling Rate, Srabosti Datta Jan 2006

Power Reduction By Dynamically Varying Sampling Rate, Srabosti Datta

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

In modern digital audio applications, a continuous audio signal stream is sampled at a fixed sampling rate, which is always greater than twice the highest frequency of the input signal, to prevent aliasing. A more energy efficient approach is to dynamically change the sampling rate based on the input signal. In the dynamic sampling rate technique, fewer samples are processed when there is little frequency content in the samples. The perceived quality of the signal is unchanged in this technique. Processing fewer samples involves less computation work; therefore processor speed and voltage can be reduced. This reduction in processor speed …

Gaussian Inference In Ar(1) Time Series With Or Without A Unit Root, Peter C.B. Phillips, Chirok Han Jan 2006

Gaussian Inference In Ar(1) Time Series With Or Without A Unit Root, Peter C.B. Phillips, Chirok Han

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This note introduces a simple first-difference-based approach to estimation and inference for the AR(1) model. The estimates have virtually no finite sample bias, are not sensitive to initial conditions, and the approach has the unusual advantage that a Gaussian central limit theory applies and is continuous as the autoregressive coefficient passes through unity with a uniform / n rate of convergence. En route, a useful CLT for sample covariances of linear processes is given, following Phillips and Solo (1992). The approach also has useful extensions to dynamic panels.
