Effects Associated With Dredging For Beach Renourishments On Reef Fish Communities Offshore Of Miami-Dade County, Florida:, Christian L. Avila Jan 2006

Effects Associated With Dredging For Beach Renourishments On Reef Fish Communities Offshore Of Miami-Dade County, Florida:, Christian L. Avila

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

Beach erosion is an ongoing problem in South Florida. Beach replenishment has been the primary means of maintaining these economically important beaches, and dredging offshore sand deposits, adjacent to reef tracts, has been the pervasive method since the 1970's. Over the past ten years, greater attention has been paid to potential impacts dredging can have on adjacent reef communities, which has led to increased monitoring efforts. With the increase in monitoring efforts, scope has expanded from a strict focus on the benthic community to include the fish communities. This study evaluates the effects of dredging on reef fish communities associated …

Performance Efficacy Using A Comparison Of Commerical And In-House Y-Str Multiplex Systems For Operational Use, Kathleen Mayntz-Press Jan 2006

Performance Efficacy Using A Comparison Of Commerical And In-House Y-Str Multiplex Systems For Operational Use, Kathleen Mayntz-Press

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

It is routine for the forensic scientist to obtain a genetic profile of an individual from DNA recovered from a biological stain deposited at a crime scene. In contrast, only a limited number of laboratories in the United States have the capability of performing Y-STR analysis in casework. In order to aid in facilitating the transfer of Y-STR technology to the crime laboratory community for operational use, a comparison between commercial products from three main vendors (Applied Biosystems AmpFLSTR Yfiler PCR Amplification Kit, Promega PowerPlex - Y System, Reliagene Y-PLEX 12) and two in-house Y-STR multiplexes (MPI and MPB) commenced. …

Cognitive Biases And Heuristics In Tort Litigation: A Proposal To Limit Their Effects Without Changing The World, John E. Montgomery Jan 2006

Cognitive Biases And Heuristics In Tort Litigation: A Proposal To Limit Their Effects Without Changing The World, John E. Montgomery

Faculty Publications

Behavioral studies indicate that individuals do not always make objective decisions about risk. Various cognitive biases and heuristics-- mental shortcuts everyone uses consciously or subconsciously to make decisions under conditions of uncertainty--introduce error and subjectivity. At one level, these studies merely confirm the obvious: individuals make decisions based on both reason and emotions. At another level, they may introduce serious complications into some types of legal analysis, which are based on the assumption that individuals are rational actors. The potential effects of erroneous decisions about risk are of particular concern in the area of tort law. Laboratory studies establish that …

The Professionalization Of Law Firm In-House Counsel, Elizabeth Chambliss Jan 2006

The Professionalization Of Law Firm In-House Counsel, Elizabeth Chambliss

Faculty Publications

This Article examines the structural evolution of the "firm counsel" position from a volunteer, part-time position filled by an existing partner to a specialized, often full-time position increasingly filled by career in-house counsel. Based on focus groups and interviews with firm counsel, as well as participant observation at meetings and conferences aimed at firm counsel, I examine how the professionalization of the firm counsel position affects: (1) the definition of the firm as the client; (2) the authority of firm counsel with partners; and (3) firm counsels' professional commitments and attitudes about ethical rules.

I find that, from a regulatory …

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Reports

Since 1978, the Broward County Environmental Protection Department (BCEPD) has provided for the conservation of endangered and threatened sea turtle species within its area of responsibility. Broward County is within the normal nesting areas of three species of sea turtles: the loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta), the green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas) and the leatherback sea turtle (Dermochelys coriacea). The loggerhead is listed as a threatened species, while the green and leatherback are listed as endangered under the U.S. Endangered Species Act, 1973, and Chapter 370, F.S.

Since these statutes strictly forbid any disturbance …

A Study To Evaluate The Efficacy Of A Cognitive Change Program, Thinking For A Change, On The Behavior Of Adult Male Offenders Incarcerated In Indiana Prisons, Harry James Sykes

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Indiana correctional officials continually look for programs that change offender behavior, both within the correctional facility setting and subsequent to their release back into the community. The Thinking for a Change program, developed in 1997 by Bush, Glick, and Taymans is a cognitive behavioral program currently being used to affect change in adult males incarcerated within the Indiana Correctional system. This study compared Class "A" and Class "B" disciplinary write-ups received by three groups of offenders; those who completed the Thinking for a Change (Bush et al.) program and received a time cut, those who completed the Thinking for a …

Effects Of *Text, Audio, And Graphic Aids In Multimedia Instruction On The Achievement Of Students In Vocabulary Learning, Dae-Sang Kim Jan 2006

Effects Of *Text, Audio, And Graphic Aids In Multimedia Instruction On The Achievement Of Students In Vocabulary Learning, Dae-Sang Kim

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners often adopt various strategies to memorize vocabulary words in the second language (L2) such as word lists or paired associates, in which new words are presented with their translations. These strategies often require learners to memorize pair associations directly. L2 vocabulary learning studies in South Korea have often focused on learning based on visual text alone in printed materials. A study was conducted at Myungin Middle School (MMS) in South Korea to explore the use of multimedia components in a Web-based self-instruction to increase the achievement of students on an English vocabulary test. …

Properties Of New York/New Jersey Harbor Sediments, K. W. Jones, Huan Feng, E. A. Stren, U. Neuhäusler, J. Osán, N. Marinkovic, Z. Song

Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Sediments found in waterways around the world may contain toxic compounds of anthropogeilic origin that can harm the environment and human health. As a result, it is often necessary to remove them and find disposal methods that are environmentally and economically acceptable. Here, we report on results obtained in an experimental program to characterize the nature of the sediment contamination. The objective was to gain a better understanding of the properties of the sediments to develop better methods for understanding the fate and transport of the contaminants and for improving methods for their removal from the sediments. Our investigations made …

Automated Adaptive Data Center Generation For Meshless Methods, Eric Mitteff Jan 2006

Automated Adaptive Data Center Generation For Meshless Methods, Eric Mitteff

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Meshless methods have recently received much attention but are yet to reach their full potential as the required problem setup (i.e. collocation point distribution) is still significant and far from automated. The distribution of points still closely resembles the nodes of finite volume-type meshes and the free parameter, c, of the radial-basis expansion functions (RBF) still must be tailored specifically to a problem. The localized meshless collocation method investigated requires a local influence region, or topology, used as the expansion medium to produce the required field derivatives. Tests have shown a regular cartesian point distribution produces optimal results, however, in …

The Use Of Pc Based Simulation Systems In The Training Of Army Infantry Officers - An Evaluation Of The Rapid Decision Trainer, Thomas Lucario

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This research considers two modes of training Army infantry officers in initial training to conduct a platoon live fire exercise. Leaders from groups that were training with the current classroom training methods were compared to leaders from groups whose training was augmented with a PC based training system known as the Rapid Decision Trainer (RDT). The RDT was developed by the US Army Research Development and Engineering Command for the purpose of aiding in the training of tactical decision making and troop leading procedures of officers in the initial levels of training to become rifle platoon leaders. The RDT allows …

Laser Metallization And Doping For Silicon Carbide Diode Fabrication And Endotaxy, Zhaoxu Tian Jan 2006

Laser Metallization And Doping For Silicon Carbide Diode Fabrication And Endotaxy, Zhaoxu Tian

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Silicon carbide is a promising semiconductor material for high voltage, high frequency and high temperature devices due to its wide bandgap, high breakdown electric field strength, highly saturated drift velocity of electrons and outstanding thermal conductivity. With the aim of overcoming some challenges in metallization and doping during the fabrication of silicon carbide devices, a novel laser-based process is provided to direct metallize the surface of silicon carbide without metal deposition and dope in silicon carbide without high temperature annealing, as an alternative to the conventional ion implantation, and find applications of this laser direct write metallization and doping technique …

Nonparametric Multivariate Statistical Process Control Using Principal Component Analysis And Simplicial Depth, Luis Beltran Jan 2006

Nonparametric Multivariate Statistical Process Control Using Principal Component Analysis And Simplicial Depth, Luis Beltran

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Although there has been progress in the area of Multivariate Statistical Process Control (MSPC), there are numerous limitations as well as unanswered questions with the current techniques. MSPC charts plotting Hotelling's T2 require the normality assumption for the joint distribution among the process variables, which is not feasible in many industrial settings, hence the motivation to investigate nonparametric techniques for multivariate data in quality control. In this research, the goal will be to create a systematic distribution-free approach by extending current developments and focusing on the dimensionality reduction using Principal Component Analysis. The proposed technique is different from current approaches …

Sensor-Based Computing Techniques For Real-Time Traffic Evacuation Management, Georgiana Hamza-Lup Jan 2006

Sensor-Based Computing Techniques For Real-Time Traffic Evacuation Management, Georgiana Hamza-Lup

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The threat of terrorist incidents is higher than ever before and devastating acts, such as the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, have left many concerns about the possibility of future incidents and their potential impact. Unlike some natural disasters that can be anticipated, terrorist attacks are sudden and unexpected. Even if sometimes we do have partial information about a possible attack, it is generally not known exactly where, when, or how an attack will occur. This lack of information posses great challenges on those responsible for security, specifically, on their ability to respond fast, whenever …
