Nclb Technology And A Rural School: A Case Study, Theresa A. Cullen, Thomas A. Brush, Timothy J. Frey, Rebecca S. Hinshaw, Scott J. Warren

The Rural Educator

The requirements of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB) have presented special challenges and opportunities for rural schools (Reeves, 2003). Researchers have suggested that one way rural schools may be able to overcome these challenges is through an increase in the level of technology integration in their school (Collins & Dewees, 2001). This case study reports on one school’s attempt to use grant resources funded through NCLB to integrate specific instructional technologies to facilitate increased student achievement. Through interviews and observations, the roles, attitudes, and difficulties of teachers and administrators in implementing a technology initiative in a …

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are capable of controlling gene expression by targeting complimentary sequences in many mRNAs. Thus, a small number of miRNAs are capable of regulating expression of many different genes. miRNAs have been found in all animals from Drosophila to human and they are highly conserved. This work was undertaken in order to identify such RNAs in the newt eye.

Design Of A 14-Bit Fully Differential Discrete Time Delta-Sigma Modulator, Sumit Kumar Nathany Nov 2006

Design Of A 14-Bit Fully Differential Discrete Time Delta-Sigma Modulator, Sumit Kumar Nathany

Theses

Analog to digital converters play an essential role in modern mixed signal circuit design. Conventional Nyquist-rate converters require analog components that are precise and highly immune to noise and interference. In contrast, oversampling converters can be implemented using simple and high-tolerance analog components. Moreover, sampling at high frequency eliminates the need for abrupt cutoffs in the analog anti-aliasing filters. A noise shaping technique is also used in DS converters in addition to oversampling to achieve a high resolution conversion. A significant advantage of the method is that analog signals are converted using simple and high-tolerance analog circuits, usually a 1-bit …

Domain Overlap In Antiferromagnetically Coupled [Co/Pt]/Nio/ [Co/Pt] Multilayers, Andrew Baruth, Lu Yuan, John D. Burton, Karolina Janicka, Evgeny Y. Tsymbal, Sy_Hwang Liou, Shireen Adenwalla Nov 2006

Domain Overlap In Antiferromagnetically Coupled [Co/Pt]/Nio/ [Co/Pt] Multilayers, Andrew Baruth, Lu Yuan, John D. Burton, Karolina Janicka, Evgeny Y. Tsymbal, Sy_Hwang Liou, Shireen Adenwalla

Sy-Hwang Liou Publications

Antiferromagnetically coupled magnetic thin films with perpendicular anisotropy exhibit domain overlap regions originating from magnetostatic stray fields localized in the vicinity of the domain walls. Using high resolution magnetic force microscopy, the authors investigate these overlap regions in [Co/Pt] /NiO/ [Co/Pt] multilayers with various strengths of the interlayer exchange coupling. They develop a simple model that provides a quantitative explanation of the formation of these regions and the relationship between the domain overlap width and the coupling strength. Their results are important for application of magnetic layered structures with perpendicular anisotropy in advanced magnetoresistive devices.

Characterization Of Black Liquor Sprays For Application To Entrained-Flow Processes, Andrew John Mackrory Nov 2006

Characterization Of Black Liquor Sprays For Application To Entrained-Flow Processes, Andrew John Mackrory

Theses and Dissertations

In this work the differences between and characteristics of water and high solids, heated black liquor sprays from air-assist atomizers are examined. Sprays were imaged with a high speed camera and the images analyzed with computer code to produce droplet size data and macroscopic spray characteristics such as mass distribution. Fluid flow rates were measured to allow relevant dimensionless groups for the spray to be calculated. A 1000 degree C tubular furnace was placed around the spray to determine the effect of industrially relevant temperatures on the droplet formation process, relative to room-temperature conditions. It was found that high solids …

Capillary Electrophoresis Of Proteins With Selective On-Line Affinity Monoliths, Jenny Marcela Armenta Blanco Nov 2006

Capillary Electrophoresis Of Proteins With Selective On-Line Affinity Monoliths, Jenny Marcela Armenta Blanco

Theses and Dissertations

The analysis of proteins in biological fluids by capillary electrophoresis (CE) is of interest in clinical chemistry. However, due to low analyte concentrations and poor concentration limits of detection (CLOD), protein analysis by this technique is frequently challenging. Coupling preconcentration techniques with CE greatly improves the CLOD. An on-line preconcentration-CE method that can selectively preconcentrate any protein for which an antibody is available would be very useful for the analysis of low abundance proteins and would establish CE as a major tool in biomarker discovery. To accomplish this, an on-line protein G monolithic preconcentrator CE system for enrichment and separation …

Trust, Paul Joseph Zak Nov 2006

Trust, Paul Joseph Zak

The Gruter Institute Working Papers on Law, Economics, and Evolutionary Biology

Trust pervades every aspect of our daily lives, from business transactions to dealings with loved-ones, yet why we trust others in some instances but not others is little understood. At an aggregate level, surveys of trustworthiness show enormous differences across countries, from 3% in Brazil to 65% in Norway. This article reports on new research that has characterized the legal, social, economic, and environmental factors that cause trust to be high or low. It also reports on laboratory experiments that demonstrate that trust has a neurophysiological basis. This research shows that low trust is a fundamental cause of poverty, but …

Graded Interface Models For More Accurate Determination Of Van Der Waals-London Dispersion Interactions Across Grain Boundaries, Roger H. French Nov 2006

Graded Interface Models For More Accurate Determination Of Van Der Waals-London Dispersion Interactions Across Grain Boundaries, Roger H. French

Faculty Scholarship

Attractive van der Waals–London dispersion interactions between two half crystals arise from local physical property gradients within the interface layer separating the crystals. Hamaker coefficients and London dispersion energies were quantitatively determined for Σ5 and near-∑13 grain boundaries in SrTiO3 by analysis of spatially resolved valence electron energy-loss spectroscopy (VEELS) data. From the experimental data, local complex dielectric functions were determined, from which optical properties can be locally analyzed. Both local electronic structures and optical properties revealed gradients within the grain boundary cores of both investigated interfaces. The results show that even in the presence of atomically structured grain boundary …

The Biology Of Introduced Norway Rats On Kiska Island, Alaska, And An Evaluation Of An Eradication Approach, Gary W. Witmer, Patrick Burke, Susan Jojola, Peter Dunlevy

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Introduced, invasive rats can cause substantial damage to native flora and fauna, including ground-nesting seabirds, when they become established on islands. We tested a control method for introduced Norway rats on Kiska Island, Alaska, during April-May, 2004, by hand-broadcasting rodenticide pellets (0.005% diaphacinone) over a 4-ha area at the rate of 28 kg/ha. We also gathered data on aspects of rat ecology and distribution, although rats were difficult to detect and capture. The rodenticide bait pellets seemed to have been effective in reducing the Norway rat population, however, this is based on a limited observation of rat sign and captures. …

Eliminating Redundant And Less-Informative Rss News Articles Based On Word Similarity And A Fuzzy Equivalence Relation, Ian Garcia, Yiu-Kai D. Ng

Faculty Publications

The Internet has marked this era as the information age. There is no precedent in the amazing amount of information, especially network news, that can be accessed by Internet users these days. As a result, the problem of seeking information in online news articles is not the lack of them but being overwhelmed by them. This brings huge challenges in processing online news feeds, e.g., how to determine which news article is important, how to determine the quality of each news article, and how to filter irrelevant and redundant information. In this paper, we propose a method for filtering redundant …
