A Performance Evaluation Of Dynamic Transport Switching For Multi-Transport Devices, Lei Wang Nov 2006

A Performance Evaluation Of Dynamic Transport Switching For Multi-Transport Devices, Lei Wang

Theses and Dissertations

Multi-transport devices are becoming more common, but sophisticated software is needed to fully realize the advantages of these devices. In this paper, we examine the performance of dynamic transport switching, which selects the best available transport for communication between two devices. We simulate transport switching within the Quality of Transport (QoT) architecture and show that it can effectively mitigate the effects of congestion and interference for connections between two multi-transport devices. We then evaluate dynamic transport switching overhead to characterize its effect on application throughput. Based on these insights, we identify several limitations of the QoT architecture and present solutions …

Garnetites Of The Cardigan Pluton - Evidence For Restite And Implications For Source Rock Compositions., Teresa K. Pett Nov 2006

Garnetites Of The Cardigan Pluton - Evidence For Restite And Implications For Source Rock Compositions., Teresa K. Pett

Theses and Dissertations

The Cardigan pluton, located in the southern half of New Hampshire, is a strongly peraluminous, S-type granite which is granodioritic in composition. It is inferred to have been emplaced rapidly, thrust up along west-verging nappes during the Acadian orogeny. Distinctive pods, consisting of 50 to 70 percent modal garnet, are found throughout the pluton in assemblages of garnet + sillimanite + biotite + plagioclase + quartz. These garnetite rocks present an intriguing case for restite. Textural features of the garnetite rocks, such as fibrolitic sillimanite mats and flat, unzoned major and trace-element garnet grain profiles, provide evidence for biotite dehydration …

Mimo Communication Capacity: Antenna Coupling And Precoding For Incoherent Detection, Nicolas W. Bikhazi Nov 2006

Mimo Communication Capacity: Antenna Coupling And Precoding For Incoherent Detection, Nicolas W. Bikhazi

Theses and Dissertations

While the capacity of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems has been explored in considerable detail, virtually all literature on this topic ignores electromagnetic considerations. This dissertation explores electromagnetic effects on the capacity performance of these multi-antenna architectures. Specifically, it examines the impact of superdirectivity for compact antenna arrays, the effect of antenna mutual coupling, and MIMO performance of multi-mode optical fiber with non-linear detection. Superdirectivity can lead to abnormally large capacity bounds in a MIMO communication system, especially when the antennas are placed close together. Because superdirective behavior is difficult to achieve in practice, this work formulates an approach for limiting …

Single-Bit Feedback And Quantum-Dynamical Decoupling, Francesco Ticozzi, Lorenza Viola Nov 2006

Single-Bit Feedback And Quantum-Dynamical Decoupling, Francesco Ticozzi, Lorenza Viola

Dartmouth Scholarship

Synthesizing an effective identity evolution in a target system subjected to unwanted unitary or nonunitary dynamics is a fundamental task for both quantum control and quantum information processing applications. Here, we investigate how single-bit, discrete-time feedback capabilities may be exploited to enact or to enhance quantum procedures for effectively suppressing unwanted dynamics in a finite-dimensional open quantum system. An explicit characterization of the joint unitary propagators correctable by a single-bit feedback strategy for arbitrary evolution time is obtained. For a two-dimensional target system, we show how by appropriately combining quantum feedback with dynamical decoupling methods, concatenated feedback-decoupling schemes may be …

A New Integrable Equation With Cuspons And W/M-Shape-Peaks Solitons, Zhijun Qiao Nov 2006

A New Integrable Equation With Cuspons And W/M-Shape-Peaks Solitons, Zhijun Qiao

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

In this paper, we propose a new completely integrable wave equation: mt+mx u2 −ux 2 +2m2ux=0, m=u−uxx. The equation is derived from the two dimensional Euler equation and is proven to have Lax pair and bi-Hamiltonian structures. This equation possesses new cusp solitons—cuspons, instead of regular peakons ce− −ct with speed c. Through investigating the equation, we develop a new kind of soliton solutions—“W/M”-shape-peaks solitons. There exist no smooth solitons for this integrable water wave equation.

Faculty Publications

Sponsorship: Department of Energy, Los Alamos National Laboratory. This document describes the methodology used to predict single-event upset rates for Xilinx Virtex FPGAs based on the CREME96 orbit modeling tool. Using this methodology, SEU upset rates are obtained for several Xilinx Virtex FPGAs including Virtex, Virtex-II, and Virtex-4. Further, SEU upset rates are obtained for a variety of orbits for each of these FPGAs.

Are Domain Walls In Spin Glasses Described By Stochastic Loewner Evolutions?, Alan Middleton, Denis Bernard, Pierre Le Doussal

Physics - All Scholarship

Domain walls for spin glasses are believed to be scale invariant invariant; a stronger symmetry, conformal invariance, has the potential to hold. The statistics of zero-temperature Ising spin glass domain walls in two dimensions are used to test the hypothesis that these domain walls are described by a Schramm-Loewner evolution SLE$_\kappa$. Multiple tests are consistent with SLE$_\kappa$, where $\kappa=2.30(5)$. Both conformal invariance and the domain Markov property are tested. The latter does not hold in small systems, but detailed numerical evidence suggests that it holds in the continuum limit.

[1] A high-resolution stratigraphic image of a flume-generated deposit was scaled up to sedimentary basin dimensions where a natural log hydraulic conductivity (ln( K)) was assigned to each pixel on the basis of gray scale and conductivity end-members. The synthetic ln( K) map has mean, variance, and frequency distributions that are comparable to a natural alluvial fan deposit. A geostatistical analysis was conducted on selected regions of this map containing fluvial, fluvial/ floodplain, shoreline, turbidite, and deepwater sedimentary facies. Experimental ln(K) variograms were computed along the major and minor statistical axes and horizontal and vertical coordinate axes. Exponential and power …

Beliefs And Values Of K–12 Teachers Underlying The Grading Process In North Dakota Small Rural Schools, Keith H. Gustafson Nov 2006

Beliefs And Values Of K–12 Teachers Underlying The Grading Process In North Dakota Small Rural Schools, Keith H. Gustafson

Theses and Dissertations

Research has shown that the grades teachers assign to students have been increasing in value, whereas the achievement measured by the grades has remained the same. There is great variability reported in the current literature concerning the grading practices of teachers. There is no consensus about what grades should mean, what reference base should be used for comparability, or the extent to which the grades assigned should correlate with the students' performances on national achievement tests. The purpose of the study was to gather information about general education teachers' beliefs and values regarding the criteria that should be used in …

Teilhard And The Future Of Humanity, Thierry Meynard, S.J. Nov 2006

Teilhard And The Future Of Humanity, Thierry Meynard, S.J.

Religion

Fifty years after his death, the thought of the French scientist and Jesuit Pierre Teilhard de Chardin (1881–1955) continues to inspire new ways of understanding humanity’s future. Trained as a paleontologist and philosopher, Teilhard was an innovative synthesizer of science and religion, developing an idea of evolution as an unfolding of material and mental worlds into an integrated, holistic universe at what he called the Omega Point. His books, such as the bestselling The Phenomenon of Man, have influenced generations of ecologists, environmentalists, planners, and others concerned with the fate of the earth.

This book brings together original essays …

Nclb Technology And A Rural School: A Case Study, Theresa A. Cullen, Thomas A. Brush, Timothy J. Frey, Rebecca S. Hinshaw, Scott J. Warren

Faculty Publications - Curriculum & Instruction

The requirements of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB) have presented special challenges and opportunities for rural schools (Reeves, 2003). Researchers have suggested that one way rural schools may be able to overcome these challenges is through an increase in the level of technology integration in their school (Collins & Dewees, 2001). This case study reports on one school’s attempt to use grant resources funded through NCLB to integrate specific instructional technologies to facilitate increased student achievement. Through interviews and observations, the roles, attitudes, and difficulties of teachers and administrators in implementing a technology initiative in a …

We present the first statistically meaningful results from two-Ks0 interferometry in heavy-ion collisions at √sNN = 200 GeV. A model that takes the effect of the strong interaction into account has been used to fit the measured correlation function. The effects of single and coupled channels were explored. At the mean transverse mass ⟨mT⟩ = 1.07 GeV, we obtain the values R = 4.09±0.46(stat)±0.31(sys) fm and λ=0.92±0.23(stat)±0.13(sys), where R and λ are the invariant radius and chaoticity parameters, respectively. The results are qualitatively consistent with mT systematics established with pions in …

Effect Of Counterface Roughness On The Cross-Path Wear Of Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene, Mary Turell Nov 2006

Effect Of Counterface Roughness On The Cross-Path Wear Of Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene, Mary Turell

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) is used worldwide as a bearing material in total joint replacement prostheses. Despite its excellent biocompatibility and high wear resistance, wear of UHMWPE components continues to be a major problem limiting the clinical lifespan of UHMWPE-containing orthopaedic implant devices. Multi-directional motion or cross-path motion is known to affect wear rates of UHMWPE in total knee and hip replacement prostheses. The purpose of this study was to quantify the effect of counterface roughness on the cross-path wear of UHMWPE and to determine if the previously established unified theory of wear model could accurately predict wear rates …

Social Influences On Academic Motivation In Early Elementary School Students, Jenli Waters

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

The goal of this research is to identify correlations between academic intrinsic motivation and exposures to academic activities within the home acknowledged by young children (5 to 8 years old). This study hopes to clarify relationship between academic intrinsic motivation and exposure to positive role modeling of academic activities in young children. Much of the data was collected by interview-style surveys conducted with a sample of 18 boys and girls of ages between 5 and 8 years. The Child-Reported Home Reading and Math Exposure Questionnaire (HEQ) was developed by the author for this study to assess the extent to which …

Cellular Oxidative Efficiency: A New Approach To Calculating Theoretical P/O Ratios, Douglas Walled Nov 2006

Cellular Oxidative Efficiency: A New Approach To Calculating Theoretical P/O Ratios, Douglas Walled

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

For decades the oxidative efficiency of cellular metabolism has been under investigation. After numerous reports of varied stoichiometric measurements, consensus in the literature has begun moving toward two currently accepted theoretical P/O ratios (the number of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) molecules formed for every oxygen atom consumed): 2.5 for NADH-linked substrates and 1.5 for FADH2-linked substrates. It is shown here, however, that the currently accepted theoretical values are inappropriately calculated underestimates, and that P/O ratios of real biochemical systems are variable. The complete oxidative metabolism of glucose, beta-hydroxybutyrate, malate, pyruvate, and succinate, utilizing three different electron shuttles (or exclusive mitochondrial metabolism) …

Do Smaller Schools Really Reduce The “Power Rating” Of Poverty?, Theodore Coladarci Nov 2006

Do Smaller Schools Really Reduce The “Power Rating” Of Poverty?, Theodore Coladarci

The Rural Educator

The percentage of variance in student achievement that is explained by student SES—“poverty’s power rating,” as some call it—tends to be less among smaller schools than among larger schools. Smaller schools, we are told, are able to somehow disrupt the association between SES and student achievement. Using eighth-grade data for 215 public schools in Maine, I explored the hypothesis that this finding is in part a statistical artifact of the lower reliability of school-aggregated student achievement in smaller schools. This hypothesis was supported for mathematics achievement but seemingly not for reading achievement. Implications are discussed.

We study connectivity, Hamilton path and Hamilton cycle decomposition, 4-edge and 3-vertex coloring for geometric graphs arising from pseudoline (affine or projective) and pseudocircle (spherical) arrangements. While arrangements as geometric objects are well studied in discrete and computational geometry, their graph theoretical properties seem to have received little attention so far. In this paper we show that they provide well-structured examples of families of planar and projective-planar graphs with very interesting properties. Most prominently, spherical arrangements admit decompositions into two Hamilton cycles; this is a new addition to the relatively few families of 4-regular graphs that are known to have …
