Gamma-ray observations in the medium energy range (0.50-50.0 MeV) are central to unfolding many outstanding questions in astrophysics. The challenges of medium-energy gamma-ray observations, however, are the low photon statistics and large backgrounds. We review these questions, address the telescope technology requirements, and describe our development of the 3-Dimensional Track Imaging (3-DTI) Compton telescope and its performance for a new mediumenergy gamma-ray mission. The 3-DTI is a large-volume time projection chamber (TPC) with a 2-dimensional gas micro-well detector (MWD) readout.

Radiation Damage And Activation From Proton Irradiation Of Advanced Scintillators, Peter F. Bloser, Mark L. Mcconnell, John R. Macri, P J. Bruillard, James M. Ryan, W Hajdas

Space Science Center

We present results from a proton accelerator beam test to measure radiation damage and activation in advanced scintillator materials. Samples of LaBr3:Ce and LaCl3:Ce were exposed to protons from 40-250 MeV at the Proton Irradiation Facility of the Paul Scherrer Institute in Switzerland. Twelve energy bands were used to simulate the spectrum of the South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA), with different samples exposed to the equivalent of 4 months, 1 year, and 5 years of SAA passage. No significant decrease in light output was found due to radiation damage, indicating that these new scintillator materials are radiation tolerant. High-resolution spectra of …

Space Science Center

The primary scientific mission of the Black Hole Finder Probe (BHFP), part of the NASA Beyond Einstein program, is to survey the local Universe for black holes over a wide range of mass and accretion rate. One approach to such a survey is a hard X‐ray coded‐aperture imaging mission operating in the 10–600 keV energy band. The development of new inorganic scintillator materials provides improved performance that is well suited to the BHFP science requirements. Detection planes formed with these materials coupled with a new generation of readout devices represent a major advancement in the performance capabilities of scintillator‐based gamma …

Space Science Center

We present Monte Carlo simulations of two astronomical gamma-ray telescope concepts based on the ThreeDimensional Track Imager (3- DTI) detector. The 3-DTI consists of a time projection chamber with two-dimensional, crossedstrip micro-well detector readout. The full three- dimensional reconstruction of charged-particle tracks in the gas volume is obtained from transient digitizers, which record the time signature of the charge collected in the wells of each strip. Such detectors hold great promise for advanced Compton telescope (ACT) and advanced pair telescope (APT) concepts due to the very precise measurement of charged particle momenta that is possible (Compton recoil electrons and electron-positron …

Rationalizing Software Patents: Suggestions For A Livable System, Shane Glynn Jan 2006

Rationalizing Software Patents: Suggestions For A Livable System, Shane Glynn

UC Law SF Communications and Entertainment Journal

In examining the historical development of software as patentable subject matter, the jurisprudence of the Supreme Court and Federal Circuit, the Patent and Trademark Office's regulations and guidelines, and the application of these rules in the legal and business community, this article explores the deficiencies of the current US software patent system. The article argues that by increasing patent examiners' knowledge of computer science and publishing domestic patent applications to allow competitors to search for relevant prior art, the US software patent system can be significantly improved.

Customer And Manager's Perception And Preference On Food Server Gender In Fine-Dining Establishments, Watcharobon Wiraboot Jan 2006

Customer And Manager's Perception And Preference On Food Server Gender In Fine-Dining Establishments, Watcharobon Wiraboot

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

American fine dining established itself as a lucrative business opportunity in the 19th century and was significantly influenced by European dining practices, which mostly notably included the practice of hiring only male servers (Prewitt, 2000). Despite changes in contemporary fine dining that are trending toward a less formal environment, some restaurants still hire only male servers. The purpose of this study is to explore how managers and customers feel about server gender in fine-dining establishments. It will also determine whether a disconnect exists between customers and managers' perceptions regarding the gender of fine dining servers; Qualitative research, using the Zaltman …

Gis-Based Analysis Of Ice-Breeding Seal Strandings In The Gulf Of Maine, David Harris Ph.D., Sat Gupta Jan 2006

Gis-Based Analysis Of Ice-Breeding Seal Strandings In The Gulf Of Maine, David Harris Ph.D., Sat Gupta

Faculty Publications

Phoca groenlandica (harp seals) and Cystophora cristata (hooded seals), two species of ice-breeding seals, are being sighted more frequently onshore in the Gulf of Maine since 1990, but little is known about their behavior in this ecosystem. We obtained records of 904 ice-breeding seal stranding locations in the Gulf of Maine between 1996 and 2002 from NOAA Fisheries and used a geographic information system (GIS) to conduct group-wise comparisons by species (using non-parametric techniques), and to determine the predictors of high seal-stranding density (using ordinal logistic regression analysis). Compared to harp seals, hooded seals stranded closer to deep water, farther …

Pumping-Induced Drawdown And Stream Depletion In A Leaky Aquifer System, James J. Butler Jr., Xiaoyong Zhan, Vitaly A. Zlotnik Jan 2006

Pumping-Induced Drawdown And Stream Depletion In A Leaky Aquifer System, James J. Butler Jr., Xiaoyong Zhan, Vitaly A. Zlotnik

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

The impact of ground water pumping on nearby streams is often estimated using analytic models of the interconnected stream-aquifer system. A common assumption of these models is that the pumped aquifer is underlain by an impermeable formation. A new semianalytic solution for drawdown and stream depletion has been developed that does not require this assumption. This solution shows that pumping-induced flow (leakage) through an underlying aquitard can be an important recharge mechanism in many stream-aquifer systems. The relative importance of this source of recharge increases with the distance between the pumping well and the stream. The distance at which leakage …

Probability Tails Of Wavelet Coefficients Of Magnetometer Records, Piotr Kokoszka, I. Maslova, Jan Josef Sojka, Lie Zhu Jan 2006

Probability Tails Of Wavelet Coefficients Of Magnetometer Records, Piotr Kokoszka, I. Maslova, Jan Josef Sojka, Lie Zhu

All Physics Faculty Publications

The ground-based magnetometer network has long been a powerful tool for monitoring and observing the variations of the currents flowing in the magnetosphere-ionosphere (M-I) system. The time series of magnetograms are nonstationary and their frequency behavior changes over time. They are therefore not amenable to traditional time domain or spectral (Fourier) analysis. In recent years, various new mathematical techniques have been developed to analyze magnetometer data and the wavelet technique has stood out as being particularly relevant. In order to correctly make statistical inferences based on wavelet analysis, the wavelet coefficient distributions of magnetograms must be examined. In this work, …

Direct Detection Of Double-Stranded Dna: Molecular Methods And Applications For Dna Diagnostics, Indraneel Ghosh, Cliff I. Stains, Aik T. Ooi, David J. Segal Jan 2006

Direct Detection Of Double-Stranded Dna: Molecular Methods And Applications For Dna Diagnostics, Indraneel Ghosh, Cliff I. Stains, Aik T. Ooi, David J. Segal

Cliff Stains Publications

Methodologies to detect DNA sequences with high sensitivity and specificity have tremendous potential as molecular diagnostic agents. Most current methods exploit the ability of single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) to base pair with high specificity to a complementary molecule. However, recent advances in robust techniques for recognition of DNA in the major and minor groove have made possible the direct detection of double-stranded DNA (dsDNA), without the need for denaturation, renaturation, or hybridization. This review will describe the progress in adapting polyamides, triplex DNA, and engineered zinc finger DNA-binding proteins as dsDNA diagnostic systems. In particular, the sequence-enabled reassembly (SEER) method, involving …

Sequence-Enabled Reassembly (Seer) Peptides For The Detection Of Dna Sequences, Aik T. Ooi, Cliff I. Stains, Jason R. Porter, Indraneel Ghosh, David J. Segal Jan 2006

Sequence-Enabled Reassembly (Seer) Peptides For The Detection Of Dna Sequences, Aik T. Ooi, Cliff I. Stains, Jason R. Porter, Indraneel Ghosh, David J. Segal

Cliff Stains Publications

By combining custom zinc finger (ZF) DNA-binding technology [1,2] with protein fragment complementation [3], we have developed a technology, designated SEER (Sequence-Enabled Reassembly), that has the potential to “see” or detect genetic information within a living cell (Figure 1). These agents consist of two inactive parts of signal-generating peptides that have the ability to recognize specific DNA sequences. The two parts bind near each other in the presence of a user-defined DNA target site and generate a fluorescent signal. Two prototype SEER systems have been constructed, based on the reassembly of green fluorescent protein (SEERGFP) [4] and the enzyme β-lactamase …

Balancing Leisure And Work: Evidence From The Seasonal Home, Susan I. Stewart, Kenneth M. Johnson Jan 2006

Balancing Leisure And Work: Evidence From The Seasonal Home, Susan I. Stewart, Kenneth M. Johnson

Sociology

Seasonal homes are used during leisure time for many recreational activities, yet recent technological innovations have diminished the separation between the work place and the seasonal home. In a survey of Walworth County seasonal home owners, most who work full time report they seldom work during vacations and weekends from their seasonal home. Yet there is a distinct subgroup who do mix work into weekends and vacations for a variety of reasons. The most frequent reasons given by these people for working from the seasonal home were related to the expectations of coworkers and clients. Understanding more about the habits …

Speculative Non-Fundamental Components In Mature Stock Markets: Do They Exist And Are They Related?, A. (Tassos) G. Malliaris, Ramaprasad Bhar Jan 2006

Speculative Non-Fundamental Components In Mature Stock Markets: Do They Exist And Are They Related?, A. (Tassos) G. Malliaris, Ramaprasad Bhar

School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Economists have long conjectured that movements in stock prices may involve speculative components, called bubbles. A bubble is defined as the difference between the market value of a security and its fundamental value. The topic of asset bubbles remains controversial because the existence of a bubble is inherently an empirical issue and no satisfactory test has yet been devised to estimate the magnitude of a bubble. This paper proposes a new methodology for testing for the existence of rational bubbles. Unlike previous authors, we treat both the dividend that drives the fundamental part and the nonfundamental process as part of …

Theory In Practice : Archaeology Field School In Sicily, Julie Edmunds

Honors Capstones

Essentially an examination of Archaeological Theory, this study seeks to illuminate four of the various theoretical approaches to archaeology: Processual, Behavioral, Structuralism, and Marxism. These approaches are evaluated for practical application through student participation in the Sicilian Archaeological Research Project in Salemi Sicily. Students were asked to complete questionnaires to determine the faults and merits of each theory. The students’ perspectives and understanding on Archaeological theory change with the incorporation of hands-on research techniques, resulting in a measured transitional period that can be used to aide in theory understanding for students that may not have the opportunity to study abroad. …

I Do Not Think It Means What You Think It Means: How Kripke And Wittgenstein's Analysis On Rule Following Undermines Justice Scalia's Textualism And Originalism, Daniel S. Goldberg

Cleveland State Law Review

This Article deals with constitutional hermeneutics. Hermeneutics is the art or theory of interpretation. Deciding what the constitutionally appropriate rule is in any given case hinges on what methods any particular judge utilizes to interpret the Constitution. Constitutional hermeneutics, then, is the theory of constitutional interpretation. In this paper, I address a specific constitutional hermeneutic: textualism-originalism. This Article is a critique of the constitutional hermeneutic of textualism-originalism. As such, my thesis is that the model of interpretation embodied by textualism-originalism cannot possibly serve to do what its proponents assert it does: constrain judicial interpretation. This is because textualism-originalism depends on …

Solvent Targeting, Avoidance And Recovery Trials (Start), Kealan Allen Jan 2006

Solvent Targeting, Avoidance And Recovery Trials (Start), Kealan Allen

Theses

Solvent is the largest-volume raw material used at Janssen Pharmaceutical (Ire) Ltd. Over 2.2 million m3 were used in 2004. The top 13 solvents make up 99% of this amount. There are two main uses for solvent on site, processing and cleaning. Processing uses 55% of the total solvent used on site, cleaning uses the remainder.

Waste solvent forms the majority of the hazardous waste produced at Janssen. Three treatment options exist at present for this waste: incineration, recovery for reuse and energy recovery. All of the hazardous waste produced on site must be exported for these treatment options, …

Replay At Optical Communications Wavelengths Of Holographic Gratings Recorded In The Visible, Vincent Toal, Maurice Whelan, Alberto Volcan, Izabela Naydenova, Suzanne Martin

Conference Papers

In this paper we report on holographic diffraction gratings recorded at visible light wavelength, which can be probed at telecommunication wavelengths. The recording material is an easily prepared, self-processing photopolymer, all of whose components are water soluble. Transmission gratings of various types, namely unslanted, slanted, totally internally reflecting and Bragg gratings were all fabricated. Diffraction efficiencies at telecommunications wavelengths compare favourably with those obtained in visible light.

Comparison Of Three Electronic Speckle Pattern Shearing Interferometers Using Photopolymer Holographic Optical Elements., Emilia Mihaylova, Izabela Naydenova, Vincent Toal, Suzanne Martin

Conference Papers

Three electronic speckle pattern shearing interferometers (ESPSI) using photopolymer holographic gratings to produce the sheared image are presented. In the first ESPSI system two holographic gratings are used. The gratings are placed between the object and an imaging lens in front of the CCD camera. In the second ESPSI system one grating is used in combination with a sheet of ground glass. The sheared images on the ground glass are further imaged onto a CCD camera. In the third ESPSI system only one grating is used - it is placed in front of the object. The image and the sheared …

Characterization Of An Acrylamide Based Photopolymer For Fabrication Of Liquid Crystal Devices, Pavani Kotakonda, Izabela Naydenova, Suzanne Martin, Vincent Toal Jan 2006

Characterization Of An Acrylamide Based Photopolymer For Fabrication Of Liquid Crystal Devices, Pavani Kotakonda, Izabela Naydenova, Suzanne Martin, Vincent Toal

Conference Papers

Photopolymers are increasingly interesting as new materials for the fabrication of electro optical liquid crystal devices. Photoinduced surface relief gratings in dry, self developing acrylamide based photopolymers can be used to align liquid crystals (LCs) as an alternative to the rubbing technique. These optically recorded surface relief patterns can be used to fabricate electro-optical switchable LC Bragg gratings. An investigation of the dependence of photoinduced surface relief gratings on recording intensity and thickness of the photopolymer layer is reported. The surface relief gratings were filled with E7 LCs and a switchable LC diffraction grating was fabricated.

Multivariate Analysis In Vibration Modal Parameter Identification, Wenliang Zhou Jan 2006

Multivariate Analysis In Vibration Modal Parameter Identification, Wenliang Zhou

Open Access Dissertations

This dissertation proposes a novel time domain method for vibration modal parameter extraction which is based on multivariate analysis. Compared with conventional time domain modal analysis methods, this method exploits statistical independence of vibration modes and aims to separate independent oscillations from each other by using only output signals. In particular, a new multivariate analysis algorithm, Smooth Orthogonal Decomposition (SOD), and current Blind Source Separation (BSS) algorithms are employed in this analysis. The dissertation starts with presentation of classical Principal Component Analysis (PCA) or Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) and their engineering applications. Then the objective, mathematical formulation and properties of …

Five Good Reasons For Engineering As The Focus For Technology Education, Robert C. Wicklein Jan 2006

Five Good Reasons For Engineering As The Focus For Technology Education, Robert C. Wicklein

Publications

The article presents information on a paper which discusses why engineering design should be the focus for technology education. Technology education is still viewed as a non-essential instructional program and this is because school administrators and counselors have inadequate understanding of it. Even general populace have inadequate understanding concerning technology education. The pervasiveness of technology literally affects every living creature in our society. Therefore, it is of critical importance that the educational system includes and supports the study of technology in the general curricula. The deficiency within the technology education profession to formulate a clear and defined target for the …

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

The need to easily and quickly count larger numbers of nanoparticles, in order to obtain statistically useful size and size-distribution data, is addressed via the use of a readily available, free, public-domain program for particle counting, NIH-Image (and 2 others derived from it, Scion Image and Image J), collectively referred to herein as Image. The best protocols that we have found useful for the use of Image are reported; both appropriate as well as problematic applications of Image are then illustrated with a series of TEM images of Ir(0), Pd(0) and Au(0) nanoclusters. Methods to detect and image nanoclusters with …
