Algorithms For Sensor Chip Alignment To Blind Datums, Gary B. Hughes Jul 2006

Algorithms For Sensor Chip Alignment To Blind Datums, Gary B. Hughes

Statistics

The sensor element of an imaging system should be mounted into its housing in such a way that the scene can be properly focused onto the sensor element's focal plane over the active area. Operational imaging requirements are forcing increasingly smaller tolerances on sensor alignment, and manufacturing systems must improve alignment capability to keep pace. Imaging system designs include reference datums that provide the basis for manufacturing alignment of optical components in each subassembly. Design constraints for alignment of the sensor element into the camera housing typically include x,y,z, clocking, and parallelism specifications. Measurement of z and parallelism positioning is …

Water, Development, And State Security In South Asia: Scenarios For China And India, Ray Chandrasekara, John M. Polimeni Jul 2006

Water, Development, And State Security In South Asia: Scenarios For China And India, Ray Chandrasekara, John M. Polimeni

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

Conflict over water resources is rare and has not occurred for thousands of years. However, the dynamics in South Asia are changing so rapidly that a conflict in the not-so-near future may be unavoidable. Water shortages could have the nonlinear effects of food shortages, political instability, migration problems, and diminished economic growth. All of these factors, caused by water shortages, could be a driver of conflict in the region, causing territorial disputes. Global instability would be sure to follow as both the U.S., attempting to protect their national security interests, and China, reacting as the regional power, tries to intervene. …

Dams, Plants, Pipes And Flows: From Big Water To Everyday Water, Fiona Allon Jul 2006

Dams, Plants, Pipes And Flows: From Big Water To Everyday Water, Fiona Allon

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

This paper focuses on patterns of domestic water consumption. It develops an approach that emphasises the importance of seeing water use as part of a broader set of consumption practices associated with the space of the home, the garden and suburban living. Water consumption is considered as a practice that is embodied and embedded in daily life. The paper also presents the project Everyday Water as a case study of recent cultural studies research on domestic water use. The cultural approach adopted in the project represents a significant departure from much conventional resource and environmental management-based work. The Everyday Water …

Detectable Coloring Of Graphs, Henry E. Escuadro Jul 2006

Detectable Coloring Of Graphs, Henry E. Escuadro

Dissertations

A basic problem in graph theory is to distinguish the vertices of a connected graph from one another in some manner. In this study, we investigate the problemof coloring the edges of a graph in a manner that distinguishes the vertices of the graph. The method we use combines many of the features of previously introduced methods.

Let G be a connected graph of order n ≥ 3 and let c : E (G ) [arrow right] {1,2,...,k } be a coloring of the edges of G (where adjacent edges may be colored the same). For each vertex …

A Distributed Hierarchical Energy-Efficient Scheme For Large Scale Mobile Wireless Ad Hoc Networks, Wasim El Hajj

Dissertations

In recent years, wireless networks have enjoyed tremendous development and popularity due to the technological advances of wireless radio devices. While interest in conventional wireless networks continues to evolve, new types of wireless networks, such as Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANET) and WirelessSensor Networks (WSN) are evolving fast and receiving much attention from academia, industry, and government.

Scalability and energy-efficiency present two of the most important challenges in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks. Scalability in MANETs can be defined as the capability of the network to provide an acceptable throughput when the network size increases. Energy-efficiency can be defined as using …

Robust Kanban Design For A Lean Supply Chain, Hardik Shah Jul 2006

Robust Kanban Design For A Lean Supply Chain, Hardik Shah

Dissertations

This research concentrates on the inventory management decisions within an assembly-type supply chain. The need for this type of investigation is warranted by the fact that intense competition and heightening demand from customers have forced businesses to focus their attention on strengthening their supply chains. The problem is that in any supply chain, there are many factors involved that cause variations and instability within the system. Previous literature indicates that the manipulation of a Kanban system in today's uncertain environment generates unfavorable results. Consequently, the goal is to find a Kanbanmethodology that would produce robust and consistent results even when …

Teacher Research Informing Policy: An Analysis Of Research On Highly Qualified Teaching And Nclb, Audrey Amrein-Beardsley Jul 2006

Teacher Research Informing Policy: An Analysis Of Research On Highly Qualified Teaching And Nclb, Audrey Amrein-Beardsley

Essays in Education

One stipulation of President Bush’s No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act is that every classroom in America will be instructed by a highly qualified teacher. To date, however, no one has satisfactorily captured what it means to be highly qualified. Common sense tells us that America’s best teachers are smart about the content areas they teach and how they teach students, but what other factors have helped to define highly qualified teachers within NCLB? The purpose of this inquiry is to investigate how the definition of a highly qualified teacher written into NCLB captures what researchers know about effective or …

Linking The World Of The Policy-Maker To That Of The Change-Agent In Educational Change, Chi Hong Nguyen Jul 2006

Linking The World Of The Policy-Maker To That Of The Change-Agent In Educational Change, Chi Hong Nguyen

Essays in Education

Policy cannot “mandate what matters”. In fact, policy in educational reform can set a general direction and framework, but it is local implementation that produces real outcomes. It is important to change the core of schooling or teachers’ deep beliefs in teaching practices, their values, and basic assumptions. Changing organizational culture can bring deeper forms of change that helps the organization survive and grow. This article, which stresses the importance of organizational culture in school change, is based on five arguments. First, taking a post-modernist standpoint, the paper argues that change is itself a complex process. Second, as change doers, …

Higher Power In Higher Education: How A South Carolina Technical College Compares Spiritually With Liberal Arts Learners, George Stanley Reeley Jul 2006

Higher Power In Higher Education: How A South Carolina Technical College Compares Spiritually With Liberal Arts Learners, George Stanley Reeley

Essays in Education

While increasing numbers of college students nationwide share tenets that embody spirituality, the problem is that not all types of institutions of higher learning recognize such tenets as integral to their mission or curricula. Two-year technical college graduates tend to enter (and often reenter) into socio-economic mainstream ahead of fouryear liberal arts graduates; however, researchers agree institutions that foster both cognitive and affective learning environments will prepare graduates better for diversity and rapid change the future holds. This study compared spiritual beliefs of students at one technical college with students attending two liberal arts universities in South Carolina. The premise …

Micron-Level Actuator For Thermal-Fluid Control In Microchannels, Nurhak Erbas Jul 2006

Micron-Level Actuator For Thermal-Fluid Control In Microchannels, Nurhak Erbas

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Effectiveness of an actuator is investigated for thermal-flow control in microchannels. First, simulations of a single actuator in a quiescent external medium are performed in order to study the parameters characterizing the synthetic jet flow from the actuator. For this purpose, a simplified, two-dimensional configuration is considered. The membrane motion is modeled in a realistic manner as a moving boundary in order to accurately compute the flow inside the actuator cavity. The geometric and actuation parameters of the actuator are investigated to define the effectiveness of the jet flow. The study is done initially at macro scales. Then, the flow …

Courts Have The Final Say: Does The Doctrine Of Manifest Disregard Promote Lawful Arbitral Awards Or Disguise Unlawful Judicial Review, Lindsay Biesterfeld Jul 2006

Courts Have The Final Say: Does The Doctrine Of Manifest Disregard Promote Lawful Arbitral Awards Or Disguise Unlawful Judicial Review, Lindsay Biesterfeld

Journal of Dispute Resolution

In exchange for a speedy, economical dispute resolution process, parties that submit to binding arbitration assume the risk that an arbitrator might misapply the law. United States Supreme Court precedent and federal law favor agreements to arbitrate by limiting judicial review of arbitral awards and requiring courts to "rigorously enforce arbitration agreements." These judicial constraints support the arbitral goals of efficiency and finality by reducing the risk that arbitral awards will be vacated on appeal. To balance the risk that arbitrators may abuse this standard of review, courts have supplemented restricted judicial review with a doctrine that allows an arbitral …

Fuzzy Cognitive Maps For Engineering And Technology Management: What Works In Practice?, Antonie J. Jetter Jul 2006

Fuzzy Cognitive Maps For Engineering And Technology Management: What Works In Practice?, Antonie J. Jetter

Engineering and Technology Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

Due to a lack of available data, many early planning decisions in engineering and technology management have to be based on experts' opinions and their qualitative statements about evolving technologies, markets and general business environments. Several authors have suggested the use of fuzzy cognitive maps (FCMs) to analytically support these decisions with simulation models that can cope with qualitative information. However, only little practice experience is documented. Based on multiple case studies and an extensive literature review, the paper reviews the state-of-the-art of FCM-practice and introduces a six-step guideline for practitioners and researchers who wish to apply FCMs to real-world …

Decreasing Emissions Of Methane From Rice Agriculture, M. A. K. Khalil, Martha J. Shearer Jul 2006

Decreasing Emissions Of Methane From Rice Agriculture, M. A. K. Khalil, Martha J. Shearer

Environmental Science and Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

Methane emissions from rice fields are controlled by several key factors. The most important are the application of organic soil amendments and water management: whether the fields are flooded intermittently or continuously. The total annual emissions from any country or the world are thus affected by the area of rice harvested, and a composite emission factor that takes into account how the various agricultural practices are distributed in terms of fertilizer use and water management, as well as other less important variables. Over decades the area of rice harvested changes but so does the composite emission factor. The product therefore, …

Generalized Perceptual Linear Prediction (Gplp) Features For Animal Vocalization Analysis, Patrick J. Clemins, Michael T. Johnson Jul 2006

Generalized Perceptual Linear Prediction (Gplp) Features For Animal Vocalization Analysis, Patrick J. Clemins, Michael T. Johnson

Dr. Dolittle Project: A Framework for Classification and Understanding of Animal Vocalizations

A new feature extraction model, generalized perceptual linear prediction (gPLP), is developed to calculate a set of perceptually relevant features for digital signal analysis of animalvocalizations. The gPLP model is a generalized adaptation of the perceptual linear prediction model, popular in human speech processing, which incorporates perceptual information such as frequency warping and equal loudness normalization into the feature extraction process. Since such perceptual information is available for a number of animal species, this new approach integrates that information into a generalized model to extract perceptually relevant features for a particular species. To illustrate, qualitative and quantitative comparisons are made …

Efficient Unbiased Estimating Equations For Analyzing Structured Correlation Matrices, Yihao Deng Jul 2006

Efficient Unbiased Estimating Equations For Analyzing Structured Correlation Matrices, Yihao Deng

Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations

Analysis of dependent continuous and discrete data has become an active area of research. For normal data, correlations fully quantify the dependence. And historically, maximum likelihood method has been very successful to estimate the correlations and unbiased estimating equation approach has become a popular alternative when there may be a departure from normality. In this thesis we show that the optimal unbiased estimating equation coincides with the likelihood equations for normal data. We then introduce a general class of weighted unbiased estimating equations to estimate parameters in a structured correlation matrix. We derive expressions for asymptotic covariance of the estimates, …

Direct Experimental Evidence For The Atomic Tunneling Of Europium In Crystalline Eu₈Ga₁₆Ge₃₀, Raphäel P. Hermann, Veerle M. Keppens, Pierre Bonville, George S. Nolas, Fernande Grandjean, Gary J. Long, Hans Martin Christen, Bryan C. Chakoumakos, Brian C. Sales, David G. Mandrus

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Mössbauer-effect and microwave absorption experimental evidence unambiguously demonstrates the presence of slow, ~450 MHz, tunneling of magnetic europium between four equivalent sites in Eu8Ga16Ge30, a stoichiometric clathrate. Remarkably, six of the eight europium atoms, or 11% of the constituents in this solid, tunnel between these four sites separated by 0.55 Å. The off centering of the atoms or ions in crystalline clathrates appears to be a promising route for producing Rabi oscillators in solid-state materials.

Comparison Of Sliding Mode And State-Feedback Control Applied To A Partially Treated Actively Constrained Layer Damped (Acld) Beam, Jose J. Rodriguez Jul 2006

Comparison Of Sliding Mode And State-Feedback Control Applied To A Partially Treated Actively Constrained Layer Damped (Acld) Beam, Jose J. Rodriguez

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

In this research, a sliding mode control (SMC) was utilized in the control of a partially treated, actively constrained layer damped (ACLD), Timoshenko beam model. The resulting vibration control was compared to the vibration control achieved by a state-feedback linear quadratic regulator (LQR) for several loading conditions. An observer was designed and model order reduction (MOR) was performed to achieve a simplified, efficient, and more controllable finite element system model. As a result of model simplification, modeling errors in the form of unstructured uncertainties were introduced into the system. It was determined that the SMC and LQR achieved similar vibration …
