Modeling The Academic Publication Pipeline, Steven E. Moss, Xiaolong Zhang, Michael M. Barth Oct 2006

Modeling The Academic Publication Pipeline, Steven E. Moss, Xiaolong Zhang, Michael M. Barth

Logistics & Supply Chain Management: Faculty Presentations (1998-2020)

In recent years, many academic institutions have implemented more stringent academic qualification standards by increasing research requirements for faculty. This paper analyzes the impact of changing research requirements in terms of faculty research output. We model the academic research pipeline including review and revision processes as a queue network and study the stationary behavior of the research pipeline. Both a theoretical model of the publication process and a simulation showing numerous combinations of submission strategies and publication requirements are presented. Within this framework, research requirements can be analyzed via probability constraints on the output process, and the research effort that …

Flow Control Of Airfoil At Post-Stall Conditions By Multiple Frequency Applied Saado Jets, A. Şamil Demirsöz Oct 2006

Flow Control Of Airfoil At Post-Stall Conditions By Multiple Frequency Applied Saado Jets, A. Şamil Demirsöz

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Flow separation over lifting aerodynamic components, such as airfoils and wings, occurs during stall conditions which are caused by adverse changes (i.e.; high angle of attack, inflow conditions, etc.) in the operating conditions of aerodynamic components. During stall conditions, the flow over airfoil loses its momentum, creating high pressure zones on the upper surface of the airfoil and even a small increase in pressure causes the fluid particles to stop and separate to a low pressure zone. In order to eliminate the flow separation, the low momentum flow should be removed in order to maintain the high momentum and low …

The ICiNG (Innovative Cities for Next Generation) project is researching a multi-modal, multi-access model of e-Government. It develops the concept of a “thin-skinned City” that will be sensitive to both the citizen and the environment through the use of mobile devices, universal access gateways, social software and environmental sensors. Intelligent infrastructure will enable a Public Administration Services layer and a Communities layer. Communities will interact with the infrastructure to avail of ICiNG services created by the administration, and will also create their own information-based services.

The Use Of Task Based Mood-Induction Procedures To Generate High Quality Emotional Assets, Brian Vaughan, Charlie Cullen, Spyros Kousidis, Yi Wang, Ciaran Mcdonnell, Dermot Campbell

Conference papers

Detecting emotion in speech is important in advancing human-computer interaction, especially in the area of speech synthesis. This poster details experimental procedures based on Mood Induction Procedure 4, using performance related tasks to engender natural emotional responses in participants. These tasks are aided or hindered by the researcher to illicit the desired emotional response. These responses will then be recorded and their emotional content graded to form the basis of an emotional speech corpus. This corpus will then be used to develop a rule-set for basic emotional dimensions in speech.

Adaptive Critic Neural Network Force Controller For Atomic Force Microscope-Based Nanomanipulation, Qinmin Yang, Jagannathan Sarangapani Oct 2006

Adaptive Critic Neural Network Force Controller For Atomic Force Microscope-Based Nanomanipulation, Qinmin Yang, Jagannathan Sarangapani

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Automating the task of nanomanipulation is extremely important since it is tedious for humans. This paper proposes an atomic force microscope (AFM) based force controller to push nano particles on the substrates. A block phase correlation-based algorithm is embedded into the controller for the compensation of the thermal drift which is considered as the main external uncertainty during nanomanipulation. Then, the interactive forces and dynamics between the tip and the particle, particle and the substrate are modeled and analyzed. Further, an adaptive critic NN controller based on adaptive dynamic programming algorithm is designed and the task of pushing nano particles …

Gravitational Diffraction Radiation, Vitor Cardoso, Marco Cavaglia, Mario Pimenta Oct 2006

Gravitational Diffraction Radiation, Vitor Cardoso, Marco Cavaglia, Mario Pimenta

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We show that if the visible universe is a membrane embedded in a higher-dimensional space, particles in uniform motion radiate gravitational waves because of spacetime lumpiness. This phenomenon is analogous to the electromagnetic diffraction radiation of a charge moving near to a metallic grating. In the gravitational case, the role of the metallic grating is played by the inhomogeneities of the extra-dimensional space, such as a hidden brane. We derive a general formula for gravitational diffraction radiation and apply it to a higher-dimensional scenario with flat compact extra dimensions. Gravitational diffraction radiation may carry away a significant portion of the …

Multiple Scattering Mechanisms In Simultaneous Projectile-Electron And Target-Electron Ejection In H⁻ + He Collisions, Michael Schulz, T. Ferger, Daniel Fischer, R. Moshammer, J. D. Ullrich Oct 2006

Multiple Scattering Mechanisms In Simultaneous Projectile-Electron And Target-Electron Ejection In H⁻ + He Collisions, Michael Schulz, T. Ferger, Daniel Fischer, R. Moshammer, J. D. Ullrich

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We studied simultaneous electron ejection from both collision partners in 200-keV H-+He collisions in a kinematically complete experiment by measuring the fully momentum-analyzed recoil ions and both active electrons in coincidence. The data were analyzed in terms of Dalitz spectra, in which the momentum exchange between three particles is plotted simultaneously in a single spectrum. We found that the energy transfer occurs predominantly between the active electrons, but most of the momentum is exchanged in elastic scattering between the cores of the collision partners.

Dr. Thomas Walker's Influence On Thomas Jefferson's Lewis And Clark Expedition, Kari Kemper Tudor Oct 2006

Dr. Thomas Walker's Influence On Thomas Jefferson's Lewis And Clark Expedition, Kari Kemper Tudor

History Theses & Dissertations

The greatest accomplishments of Thomas Jefferson's presidency were the purchase of the Louisiana territory, which doubled the size of the United States, and the discoveries made by the Lewis and Clark expedition. These were not just single events that sprang into being in 1803, as we learned in elementary school, but the fulfillment of a lifetime of study and effort for Jefferson. Many factors influenced Jefferson to make the decisions that culminated in these twin events.

This thesis examines the role of Doctor Thomas Walker, who was Thomas Jefferson*s guardian, neighbor, and friend, to demonstrate the influence of a lesser-known …

A Pattern Language For Extensible Program Representation, Andrew P. Black, Daniel Vainsencher Oct 2006

A Pattern Language For Extensible Program Representation, Andrew P. Black, Daniel Vainsencher

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

For the last 15 years, implementors of multiple view programming environments have sought a single code model that would form a suitable basis for all of the program analyses and tools that might be applied to the code. They have been unsuccessful. The consequences are a tendency to build monolithic, single-purpose tools, each of which implements its own specialized analyses and optimized representation. This restricts the availability of the analyses, and also limits the reusability of the representation by other tools. Unintegrated tools also produce inconsistent views, which reduce the value of multiple views. This article describes a set of …

Building On Strong Foundations: Rethinking Legal Education With A View To Improving Curricular Quality, Veronica Henderson Oct 2006

Building On Strong Foundations: Rethinking Legal Education With A View To Improving Curricular Quality, Veronica Henderson

Dalhousie Law Journal

Recent increases in law school tuition provide an occasion for criticalreflection on precisely what law students are being offered in their formal education. The aim of this article is to help catalyze discussion of what quality legal education entails. It begins by outlining the current underpinnings of Canadian legal education, especially the foundation of issue identification. Newer developments in legal education are also canvassed.A foundational critique is then applied to elucidate the main weakness of thepresent curricular structure: students are graduating with a flat understanding of the law Employing Dr Oliver Sacks's critique of medical education as a starting point, …

Adaptive Estimation Of Autoregressive Models With Time-Varying Variances, Ke-Li Xu, Peter C.B. Phillips Oct 2006

Adaptive Estimation Of Autoregressive Models With Time-Varying Variances, Ke-Li Xu, Peter C.B. Phillips

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

Stable autoregressive models of known finite order are considered with martingale differences errors scaled by an unknown nonparametric time-varying function generating heterogeneity. An important special case involves structural change in the error variance, but in most practical cases the pattern of variance change over time is unknown and may involve shifts at unknown discrete points in time, continuous evolution or combinations of the two. This paper develops kernel-based estimators of the residual variances and associated adaptive least squares (ALS) estimators of the autoregressive coefficients. These are shown to be asymptotically efficient, having the same limit distribution as the infeasible generalized …

A Complete Asymptotic Series For The Autocovariance Function Of A Long Memory Process, Offer Lieberman, Peter C.B. Phillips Oct 2006

A Complete Asymptotic Series For The Autocovariance Function Of A Long Memory Process, Offer Lieberman, Peter C.B. Phillips

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

An infinite-order asymptotic expansion is given for the autocovariance function of a general stationary long-memory process with memory parameter d in (-1/2,1/2). The class of spectral densities considered includes as a special case the stationary and invertible ARFIMA(p,d,q) model. The leading term of the expansion is of the order O (1/ k 1-2 d ), where k is the autocovariance order, consistent with the well known power law decay for such processes, and is shown to be accurate to an error of O(1/ k 3-2d ). The derivation uses Erdélyi’s (1956) expansion for Fourier-type integrals when there are critical points …

An Empirical Investigation Into The Relationships Between Emotional Intelligence, Use Of Knowledge Transfer Methods, And Project Performance, Brent Michael Decker Oct 2006

An Empirical Investigation Into The Relationships Between Emotional Intelligence, Use Of Knowledge Transfer Methods, And Project Performance, Brent Michael Decker

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Increasingly, the use of project teams is becoming commonplace within organizations as the primary means to accomplish complex tasks. While the literature has long acknowledged that the knowledge transfer process is a key component in achieving organizational success and ultimately sustaining a competitive advantage, very little has been written that specifically examines the knowledge transfer process at the project team level. In an attempt to increase the understanding of knowledge transfer processes at the project team level, the effect that a relatively new construct, termed emotional intelligence, has on the use of knowledge transfer methods is examined. The relationships between …

Steganalysis Embedding Percentage Determination With Learning Vector Quantization, Benjamin M. Rodriguez, Gilbert L. Peterson, Kenneth W. Bauer, Sos S. Agaian Oct 2006

Steganalysis Embedding Percentage Determination With Learning Vector Quantization, Benjamin M. Rodriguez, Gilbert L. Peterson, Kenneth W. Bauer, Sos S. Agaian

Faculty Publications

Steganography (stego) is used primarily when the very existence of a communication signal is to be kept covert. Detecting the presence of stego is a very difficult problem which is made even more difficult when the embedding technique is not known. This article presents an investigation of the process and necessary considerations inherent in the development of a new method applied for the detection of hidden data within digital images. We demonstrate the effectiveness of learning vector quantization (LVQ) as a clustering technique which assists in discerning clean or non-stego images from anomalous or stego images. This comparison is conducted …

Fault Arrangements And Their Effect On The Performance Of Wireless Sensor Networks, Dwayne Sayone Blai Oct 2006

Fault Arrangements And Their Effect On The Performance Of Wireless Sensor Networks, Dwayne Sayone Blai

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Wireless sensor networks face many reliability challenges. The networks are deployed in open, hostile environments, making them easily susceptible to network failure. As a result, there are countless faults that can occur in sensor networks, from component failure to outside attacks. Outside attacks take place when an adversary gains control over a node or set of nodes in the network. Outside attackers can destroy a network in numerous ways such as random attacks, clustering attacks, search-based attacks, etc. The method and strategy used in each of these attacks directly affects the network's reliability. Understanding how these adversaries are positioned is …

Fault Modeling In Wireless Sensor Networks, Ahmed A. Elmiligui Oct 2006

Fault Modeling In Wireless Sensor Networks, Ahmed A. Elmiligui

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A large amount of research has been done in the area of wireless sensor networks (WSN), but not much work has been done in modeling the fault tolerance and reliability of these networks. In this thesis, the fault tolerance of a WSN to node failures is studied and an analytical reliability model of the network is derived. A valid reliability model of a network could reveal an estimate of the network's performance before it is deployed.

A wireless sensor network was modeled as a k-out-of-n system and a generic fault tolerant framework for the network in terms of node losses …

The Effect Of Sonification Pulse Rate And System Reliability On Perceived Workload Urgency Trust And Monitoring Performance, Randal D. Spain Oct 2006

The Effect Of Sonification Pulse Rate And System Reliability On Perceived Workload Urgency Trust And Monitoring Performance, Randal D. Spain

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of the current study was to examine the effect of sonification pulse rate and system reliability on subjective workload, urgency, trust, and monitoring performance of a dual task simulation of patient monitoring. Fifty-eight students performed a compensatory tracking and resource management task while simultaneously engaging in a patient monitoring task. Sonification pulse rate contained three levels (40ppm, 60ppm, 80ppm) and was manipulated within groups by varying the inter-pulse interval of the auditory signal. System reliability contained two levels (40%, 60%) and was manipulated between groups by varying the number of true and false problems presented by the sonification …

Atomic And Electronic Structure Of Cofeb/Mgo Interface From First Principles, John D. Burton, Sitaram S. Jaswal, Evgeny Y. Tsymbal, O. G. Heinonen Oct 2006

Atomic And Electronic Structure Of Cofeb/Mgo Interface From First Principles, John D. Burton, Sitaram S. Jaswal, Evgeny Y. Tsymbal, O. G. Heinonen

Evgeny Tsymbal Publications

First-principles calculations of the atomic and electronic structure of crystalline CoFeB/MgO/CoFeB magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) are performed to understand the effect of B on spin-dependent transport in these junctions. The authors find that it is energetically favorable for B atoms to reside at the crystalline CoFeB/MgO interface rather than remain in the bulk of the crystalline CoFeB electrode. The presence of B at the interfaces is detrimental to tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) because it significantly suppresses the majority-channel conductance through states of symmetry. Preventing B segregation to the interfaces during annealing should result in an enhanced TMR in CoFeB/MgO/CoFeB MTJs.

A New Colorimetric Assay For Methionyl Aminopeptidases: Examination Of The Binding Of A New Class Of Pseudopeptide Analog Inhibitors, Sanghamitra Mitra, Anna M. Dygas-Holz, Jiri Jiracek, Miroslava Zertova, Lenka Zakova, Richard C. Holz

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

A direct and convenient spectrophotometric assay has been developed for methionine aminopeptidases (MetAPs). The method employs the hydrolysis of a substrate that is a methionyl analogue of p-nitroaniline (l-Met-p-NA), which releases the chromogenic product p-nitroaniline. This chromogenic product can be monitored continuously using a UV–Vis spectrophotometer set at 405 nm. The assay was tested with the type I MetAP from Escherichia coli (EcMetAP-I) and the type II MetAP from Pyrococcus furiosus (PfMetAP-II). Using l-Met-p-NA, the kinetic constants kcat and Km were determined for EcMetAP-I and PfMetAP-II …

Additional Evidence For The Migration Of Clay Upon Heating Of Clay–Polypropylene Nanocomposites From X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (Xps), Jianwei Hao, Menachem Lewin, Charles A. Wilkie, Jiangqi Wang Oct 2006

Additional Evidence For The Migration Of Clay Upon Heating Of Clay–Polypropylene Nanocomposites From X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (Xps), Jianwei Hao, Menachem Lewin, Charles A. Wilkie, Jiangqi Wang

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

The explanation for reduction in the peak heat release rate of polymer–clay nanocomposites which is normally accepted is that clay accumulates at the surface, forming a thermal shield which is also a barrier to mass transport. The process by which this clay arrives at the surface has never been described in print but the common assumption is that pyrolysis is required for clay accumulation to occur. In this work, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, a tool much more sensitive in surface analysis than conventional techniques, is used to probe the surface of polypropylene–clay nanocomposites that have been annealed at relatively low temperatures, …

A Continuum Model On The Nanomesa And Nanowell Formation In Langmuir-Blodgett Ferroelectric Polymeric Films, Jiang Yu Li, Yang Luo, Mengjun Bai, Stephen Ducharme Oct 2006

A Continuum Model On The Nanomesa And Nanowell Formation In Langmuir-Blodgett Ferroelectric Polymeric Films, Jiang Yu Li, Yang Luo, Mengjun Bai, Stephen Ducharme

Stephen Ducharme Publications

Spontaneous crystalline nanomesa and nanowell formation has recently been discovered in polyvinylidene fluoride trifluoroethylene [P(VDF– TrFE)] copolymer films developed by Langmuir–Blodgett (LB) deposition. In this paper, we propose a continuum field model to analyze this remarkable phenomenon, consisting of kinematics, energetics, and kinetics of pattern formation and evolution in P(VDF–TrFE) films. Linear perturbation analysis has been carried out to analyze the stability and growth of patterns under small perturbations, and finite difference numerical simulations have been implemented to simulate the morphologies and evolutions of nanomesas and nanowells. The effects of film thickness and a number of other material parameters have …

Investigating The Feasibility Of A Passive Tracking Index For Monitoring Wildlife In The Lower Omo Valley, Ethiopia, Richard M. Engeman, Paul Evangilista Oct 2006

Investigating The Feasibility Of A Passive Tracking Index For Monitoring Wildlife In The Lower Omo Valley, Ethiopia, Richard M. Engeman, Paul Evangilista

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

In many places in Africa, constraints in human, financial and physical resources are common problems that limit the effectiveness of wildlife researchers and managers. In an attempt to identify a useful tool for monitoring African wildlife populations, we tested a passive tracking index (PTI) methodology on a unique wildlife resource area in the Lower Omo Valley, Ethiopia. The methodology had previously proved valuable for monitoring a wide variety of wildlife species, including ungulates and carnivores in North America and Australia. Two ungulates (lesser kudu and dikdik), a carnivore (hyena), a primate (baboon), and a ground foraging bird (guineafowl) were simultaneously …
