Are Vultures Birds, And Do Snakes Have Venom, Because Of Macro- And Microscavenger Conflict?, John A. Shivik

I outline models that describe vertebrate and microbial competition for carrion resources and help explain the resultant morphologies observed in extant vertebrate scavengers. Odors from microbial decomposition signal the presence of a carcass to vertebrate scavengers. Therefore, microbes must consume carcasses rapidly or evolve toxic defenses to protect themselves and their resource from their vertebrate competitors. Similarly, macroscavengers must evolve traits that allow rapid detection of carcasses or develop chemical defenses against microbial toxins. My modeling suggests that the most efficient macroscavenger adaptations increase the probability of carcass detection, which explains why highly vagile species, such as vultures, are the …

Assessment Of Pws System Effects On The Random Selection Of Jurors And The Demographic Characteristics Of The Jury Poll In The Superior Court Of Arizona, Maricopa County, Paula Hannaford-Agor, G. Thomas Munsterman
Faculty Publications
In July 2006, the Superior Court of Arizona, Maricopa County (Superior Court), contracted with the National Center for State Courts (NCSC) to review its jury management system. The Superior Court specifically requested that the NCSC Center for Jury Studies determine whether its Proximity Weighted Summoning (PWS) System randomly selects jurors from the master jury list for the county; whether the PWS System systematically excludes any identifiable group or population; and the effect of the PWS System on the demographic characteristics of jurors reporting at the various courthouse facilities in Maricopa County. The Superior Court also requested that the NCSC describe …

York County Court Of Common Pleas, Jury Utilization And Representation Assessment, Paula Hannaford-Agor
Faculty Publications
In May 2006, the York County Office of Court Administration requested that the National Center for State Courts (NCSC) assess its jury management and utilization practices and make recommendations for improvement. The impetus for this request came from concerns both within the Office of Court Administration and from the Administrative Office of the Pennsylvania Courts that existing jury management practices make inefficient use of jurors, imposing excessive and unnecessary costs on the court and on the citizens who report for jury service. The York County Office of Court Administration also expressed concern that its jury pool may not adequately reflect …
Using Robotics As An Educational Tool In 4-H, Bradley S. Barker, John Ansorge
Using Robotics As An Educational Tool In 4-H, Bradley S. Barker, John Ansorge
Journal of Extension
Although America is the world leader in science and technology innovation, the educational system is not preparing enough science and technology workers to maintain leadership. In an effort to prepare youth for the 21st century, Nebraska 4-H conducted a 2-day workshop using robotics to teach science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) concepts. A subsequent competition was held at the State Fair to debut robots to the community. The competition was popular with fair-goers and let youth experiment with their robot designs and programming. To engage more youth, Nebraska will pilot the 4-H CCS curriculum and expand the State Fair competition.
Fast Tracking Of Near-Duplicate Keyframes In Broadcast Domain With Transitivity Propagation, Chong-Wah Ngo, Wan-Lei Zhao, Yu-Gang Jiang
Fast Tracking Of Near-Duplicate Keyframes In Broadcast Domain With Transitivity Propagation, Chong-Wah Ngo, Wan-Lei Zhao, Yu-Gang Jiang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The identification of near-duplicate keyframe (NDK) pairs is a useful task for a variety of applications such as news story threading and content-based video search. In this paper, we propose a novel approach for the discovery and tracking of NDK pairs and threads in the broadcast domain. The detection of NDKs in a large data set is a challenging task due to the fact that when the data set increases linearly, the computational cost increases in a quadratic speed, and so does the number of false alarms. This paper explores the symmetric and transitive nature of near-duplicate for the effective …

Audio Similarity Measure By Graph Modeling And Matching, Yuxin Peng, Chong-Wah Ngo, Cuihua Fang, Xiaoou Chen, Jianguo Xiao
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
This paper proposes a new approach for the similarity measure and ranking of audio clips by graph modeling and matching. Instead of using frame-based or salient-based features to measure the acoustical similarity of audio clips, segment-based similarity is proposed. The novelty of our approach lies in two aspects: segment-based representation, and the similarity measure and ranking based on four kinds of similarity factors. In segmentbased representation, segments not only capture the change property of audio clip, but also keep and present the change relation and temporal order of audio features. In the similarity measure and ranking, four kinds of similarity …

Critical Success Factors For Erp Implementation And Upgrade, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah, Santiago Delgado
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Seven categories of critical success factors were identified from the ERP literature: (1) business plan and vision; (2) change management, (3) communication; (4) ERP team composition, skills and compensation; (5) management support and championship; (6) project management, (7) system analysis, selection and technical implementation. We conducted a case study of two organizations that had implemented and upgraded ERP systems. We adopted Markus and Tanis' four-phase model and compared the importance of these critical success factors across the phases of ERP implementation and upgrade. The importance of these factors across the phases of ERP implementation and upgrade is very similar. 'Business …

Kelo And The Games People Play: A Game-Theoretic Analysis Of Kelo V. City Of New London, Derek K. Yonai
Campbell Law Review
This article argues that the Court's holding creates an incentive for private developers to rent-seek by asking local governments to transfer private property to them instead of purchasing it in the private market. Likewise, the Court's holding creates incentives for local governments to take private property pursuant to their eminent domain powers.

Fisheries Research Contract Report No. 15 - Aquatic Animal Health Subprogram: Pilchard Herpesvirus Infection In Wild Pilchards (Frdc Project No. 2002/044) Final Report, Brian Jones, Melanie Crockford, Richard Whittington, Mark Crane, Graham Wilcox
Fisheries Research Contract Reports
In 1995 and again in 1998/9, millions of pilchards (Sardinops sagax neopilchardus) were found dead or dying off the coast of Australia. Some pilchards in New Zealand were also affected during the 1995 epizootic. The epizootics moved progressively in a "bushfire-like" manner against the prevailing currents at a rapid speed. An uncharacterised herpesvirus, pilchard herpesvirus (PHV), was associated with both mortality events and, based on its occurrence in affected fish and the disease pathogenesis, generally accepted as the causative agent, although experimental evidence of its role was not established. Until recently, rapid and sensitive methods to detect PHV were not …

Mobile computing has become an important area of computer networking and is expected to play a fundamental role in the ubiquitous access of Internet resources in the future. In recent years, we have seen increasing demand from end-users to access network resources from anywhere and at anytime from all kinds of devices. A greater degree of connectivity is almost becoming mandatory in todays business world. In addition, mobility of end-users is placing further requirements on network systems and protocols to provide uninterrupted services. Mobile network protocol such as Mobile IPv4 has emerged as one of the promising solutions capable of …
Positive Solutions Of A Nonlinear N-Th Order Eigenvalue Problem, John R. Graef, Johnny Henderson, Bo Yang
Positive Solutions Of A Nonlinear N-Th Order Eigenvalue Problem, John R. Graef, Johnny Henderson, Bo Yang
Faculty Articles
For 1/2 < p < 1 fixed, values of lambda > 0 are determined for which there exist positive solutions of the n-th order differential equation u((n)) = lambda g(t)f(u), 0 < t < 1, satisfying the three-point boundary conditions, u((i-1)) (0) = u((n-2)) (P) = u((n-1)) (1) = 0, 1
The problem is converted to a third order differential-integro boundary value problem and then a recent result of Graef and Yang for third order boundary value problems is adapted. An example is included to illustrate the results.
Characterization Of Β-Lactam Resistant Pandemic Serotypes Of Vibrio Cholerae Isolated From Ships' Ballast Tanks And Coastal Waters, Amanda Lynn Goodrich
Characterization Of Β-Lactam Resistant Pandemic Serotypes Of Vibrio Cholerae Isolated From Ships' Ballast Tanks And Coastal Waters, Amanda Lynn Goodrich
OES Theses and Dissertations
Vibrio cholerae serotypes 01 and 0139 are responsible for world-wide epidemics of cholera. These pandemic causing strains must possess genes that encode for the cholera toxin (CTX) and toxin co-regulated pili (TCP) in order to infect their hosts. In this study, 284 isolates of Vibrio cholerae from ballast and coastal waters were serotyped, with 11 % testing positive for serotype 01 and 21 % testing positive for serotype 0139. PCR assays were used to detect the presence of ctxA and tcpA genes in all positive isolates, none of which contained ctxA while 2% of the isolates contained tcpA. The 01 …

Obstacle Avoidance Using Predictive Vision Based On A Dynamic 3d World Model, D. Paul Benjamin, Damian M. Lyons, Deryle W. Lonsdale
CSIS Technical Reports
The paper presents a predictive active-vision system for a mobile robot using a dynamic 3D world model. The virtual robot generates expected imagery, compares it with real visual input, and directs attention to significant discrepancies. Recognized objects are then monitored against predictions rather than repeatedly recognized, reducing the cost of scene understanding and supporting obstacle avoidance.

My Patent, Your Patent, Or Our Patent? Inventorship Disputes Within Academic Research Groups, Sean B. Seymore
My Patent, Your Patent, Or Our Patent? Inventorship Disputes Within Academic Research Groups, Sean B. Seymore
Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications
The statutory requirement of identifying the first and true inventor is often muddled by the mores and practices of academic science. Unfortunately, and despite claims of scientists and attorneys to the contrary, I contend that the inventive entity is not discovered but rather determined in and through social relationships. Although universities should always strive to promulgate policies which fully comport with the law, the biggest incentive for universities to insist on correct inventorship is financial. I argue that the rise in mentee claims for sole or joint inventorship, as well as the ever-present threat of an inequitable conduct defense in …

A Comparison Of Student Achievement In Economically Different But Academically Equivalent Catholic School Programs, Roseanne L. Williby
Student Work
Urban and suburban religious educational programs were evaluated to determine if achievement and readiness for high school transition were the same for students with similar parent commitment and equivalent Catholic school program experiences but differing socioeconomic advantages. Following five consecutive years in their programs, urban and suburban 4th-grade pretest compared to 8th-grade posttest gains made by students (n = 56) demonstrated positive academic outcomes for both programs. As reflected by subject test scores and composite percentile rank scores, urban and suburban programs equally prepared students for posttest performance on achievement tests and unconditional 9th-grade acceptance into college preparatory Catholic High …
An Elliptic Equation With No Monotonicity Condition On The Nonlinearity, Gregory S. Spradlin
An Elliptic Equation With No Monotonicity Condition On The Nonlinearity, Gregory S. Spradlin
Mathematics - Daytona Beach
An elliptic PDE is studied which is a perturbation of an autonomous equation. The existence of a nontrivial solution is proven via variational methods. The domain of the equation is unbounded, which imposes a lack of compactness on the variational problem. In addition, a popular monotonicity condition on the nonlinearity is not assumed. In an earlier paper with this assumption, a solution was obtained using a simple application of topological (Brouwer) degree. Here, a more subtle degree theory argument must be used. © EDP Sciences, SMAI 2006.

Magnetic Microstructure Of Iron Sulfide Crystals In Magnetotactic Bacteria From Off-Axis Electron Holography, T. Kasama, Mihály Pósfai, R. K. K. Chong, A. P. Finlayson, R. E. Dunin-Borkowski, Richard B. Frankel
Physics
Transmission electron microscopy, off-axis electron holography and energy-selected imaging were used to study the crystallography, morphology, and magnetic microstructure of nanoscale greigite (Fe3S4) magnetosomes in magnetotactic bacteria from a sulfidic habitat. The greigite magnetosomes were organized in chains, but were less ordered than magnetite magnetosomes in other bacteria. Nevertheless, the magnetosomes comprise a permanent magnetic dipole, sufficient for magnetotaxis.
