The Development Of Apophatic Theology From The Pre-Socratics To The Early Christian Fathers., Kevin Teed Millsaps May 2006

The Development Of Apophatic Theology From The Pre-Socratics To The Early Christian Fathers., Kevin Teed Millsaps

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

It is apparent that what is characterized as Christian Apophatic Theology has been poorly related to its antecedents existing in Greco-Roman philosophy. This study proposed the following research hypothesis: Greco-Roman philosophy exerted a structural and terminological influence upon Christian apophatic theology.

To prove or disprove this hypothesis, apophatic terminology and textual structures in Greco-Roman philosophical texts were compared to classic Christian apophatic texts, primarily from the Apostolic and Cappadocian Fathers. Throughout this process, Michael Sells' clasic definition of apophatic language, consisting of the apearance of the metaphor of emanation, dis-ontological language, and dialectical language of immanence and transcendence, was used …

Physician Communication Behaviors That Elicit Patient Trust., Linda E. Bambino May 2006

Physician Communication Behaviors That Elicit Patient Trust., Linda E. Bambino

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The general relationship between the physician and the patient is one where communication is used to establish and maintain what will likely become a long-term partnership. Health communication research indicates that physicians who have apt communication skills in the patient-physician relationship develop a platform of trust behaviors. The physician communication behaviors perceived to elicit trust reported by patients are; comfort/caring, agency, competence, compassion and honesty. The objective of the research project was to assess patient perceptions of previously determined physician communication behaviors that predict patient trust through individual surveys (N=162) between foreign-born international medical graduates and American-born non-IMG resident physicians. …

Articulation As An Act Of Futility: A Deconstructive Exploration Of Textual Articulation As It Functions Within A First-Person Narrative Structure., Wilson Wright Onstott May 2006

Articulation As An Act Of Futility: A Deconstructive Exploration Of Textual Articulation As It Functions Within A First-Person Narrative Structure., Wilson Wright Onstott

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The inability of language to convey complete meaning and truth is a central point of address for much post-structuralist literary theory and criticism. When these theories are applied to a first-person narrative structure, whether it is a work of fiction or non-fiction, certain specific incongruities arise. When a narrative seeks to recall certain events, a presupposed reexamination takes place as the narrative unfolds text comes into being. If a narractice is contructed in this way then the intent of the text then is to convey comprehensive meanings or truths of those cataloged experiences. According Deconstructive Theory, it is language's inherent …

Lifeways In The Northern Mayan Lowlands: New Approaches To Archaeology In The Yucatán Peninsula, Jennifer P. Mathews, Bethany A. Morrison

Faculty Authored and Edited Books & CDs

The flat, dry reaches of the northern Yucatán Peninsula have been largely ignored by archaeologists drawn to the more illustrious sites of the south. This book is the first volume to focus entirely on the northern Maya lowlands, presenting a broad cross-section of current research projects in the region by both established and up-and-coming scholars. To address the heretofore unrecognized importance of the northern lowlands in Maya prehistory, the contributors cover key topics relevant to Maya studies: the environmental and historical significance of the region, the archaeology of both large and small sites, the development of agriculture, resource management, ancient …

To Catch A Sex Thief: The Burden Of Performance In Rape And Sexual Assault Trials, Corey Rayburn Yung May 2006

To Catch A Sex Thief: The Burden Of Performance In Rape And Sexual Assault Trials, Corey Rayburn Yung

ExpressO

Despite decades of efforts to reform American rape law, prosecution and conviction rates remain low compared to similar crimes. While activists led legislatures to adopt important statutory changes for rape and sexual assault, only modest effects in the levels of sexual violence have been observed. Nonetheless, reform-minded scholars continue to focus on statutory and rule tinkering as a means to quell sexual violence.

This article argues against the commonly-held belief that the crucial factors in determining the outcome of rape trials are substantive and procedural in nature. Rather, the issues of performance, representation, and language often pre-determine the outcomes of …

Oedipus' Wake: The (Neo-)Masculinization Of The Self In Late Twentieth-Century American Women's Memoir, Thomas Johnson May 2006

Oedipus' Wake: The (Neo-)Masculinization Of The Self In Late Twentieth-Century American Women's Memoir, Thomas Johnson

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Without pretensions to exhaustiveness, this study briefly examines the mid- to late-twentieth-century flowering of western theory and criticism built around autobiographical writing and follows the feminist branch(es) of that theory and criticism through a reading of the following four memoirs: Autobiography of a Face by Lucy Grealy, All the Lost Girls by Patricia Foster, Lying by Lauren Slater, and Prozac Nation by Elizabeth Wurtzel. Using both Freudian and Lacanian psychoanalytic theory as they relate to literature, I argue that the selves these four women write in their memoirs are not selves built around the model historically set for women by …

Hearing Health In Utah Special Olympics Athletes Compared To Special Olympics Athletes Worldwide: A Prevalence Study In Individuals With Intellectual Disabilities, Lisa Moses Mullins

Theses and Dissertations

The Special Olympics Healthy Athletes initiative promotes wellness of the athletes with intellectual disabilities and education for medical professionals. Healthy Athletes has created a hearing screening program, Healthy Hearing, to help athletes with intellectual disabilities get the otological and audiological care they need. This program promotes a healthy hearing lifestyle and educates medical professionals regarding the need of health care for the intellectually disabled population. The physiologic, otologic, and audiologic abnormalities often occurring in the intellectually disabled population bring special attention for the need to determine the prevalence rate of hearing loss among the athletes participating in Special Olympics events. …

Natural-Law Judaism?: The Genesis Of Bioethics In Hans Jonas, Leo Strauss And Leon Kass, Lawrence A. Vogel May 2006

Natural-Law Judaism?: The Genesis Of Bioethics In Hans Jonas, Leo Strauss And Leon Kass, Lawrence A. Vogel

Philosophy Faculty Publications

Leon Kass is much misunderstood. He is not simply a Republican ideologue who tailored his ideas to break out of the ivory tower and into the halls of power. Nor does he look simply to use human nature as a moral guide. When the full range of his writings is considered and set in the tradition of his teachers, Hans Jonas and Leo Strauss, what emerges is a natural law position colored by religious revelation.

Developing High School Multiple Intelligence Learning Centers: An Action Research Project In History., Jessica Cannaday May 2006

Developing High School Multiple Intelligence Learning Centers: An Action Research Project In History., Jessica Cannaday

Journal of Critical Issues in Educational Practice

Research that provides results which can be almost instantaneously put into use is looked on by some teachers as a path to better student learning. Accordingly, action research is a form of critical reflection that some experts believe can achieve instant change. Although, action research is sometimes denigrated as lacking in precision, the critical reflection necessary in any well done action research project demonstrates that such research while, not quantitatively rigorous can still be qualitatively useful. As such, the author discusses her own implementation of MI learning centers as a form of action research in the classroom.

Schism: When Research And Practice Fail To Meet, Camille M. Mayers, Donna L. Schnorr May 2006

Schism: When Research And Practice Fail To Meet, Camille M. Mayers, Donna L. Schnorr

Journal of Critical Issues in Educational Practice

The authors explore the hypothesis generation, intervention formation and operationalization of PL 107-110, as a cautionary example of the social cost of failure to effectively integrate empirical research to professional practice. They suggest a reexamination of traditional dichotomous University identification as "Research versus Practitioner" and present a case for a stronger emphasis upon the integration of research and practice through applied experiential activity during the period of University education.

The Effects Of Speech Rate On Comprehension, Jamilah Adams, Michelle Weber May 2006

The Effects Of Speech Rate On Comprehension, Jamilah Adams, Michelle Weber

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

There is a perception that the rate of speech affects the level of comprehensibility of a listener. If the rate of a speaker during a speech or lecture does in fact affect the level of comprehension, then the speaker would have to modify his/her rate of speech in order to benefit the ears of all his/her listeners. In the present study, 40 participants listened to four passages, taken from www.testpreview.com all recorded at varying speeds, after which they answered 10 questions that corresponded with the passages. Results found that speech rate had no effect on comprehension. However, findings based on …

The Best Ten-Squares, Jeff Grant May 2006

The Best Ten-Squares, Jeff Grant

Word Ways

It is nearly 85 years since the first ten-square was published. American National Puzzlers' League member Paul M. Bryan (Tunste) exhibited a tautonymic square in the September 1921 Enigma. The example was not perfect, however, with one word (ALALA) being arbitrarily doubled. Furthermore, as tautonymic ten-squares use only five different words, each in two positions, they are not true solutions to the challenge.

The families below are all single parent families with a difference. The parent has never had a partner. All the offspring are produced asexually. The offspring in a particular generation are all the same length (letterwise). The letters are each assigned their alphabetical values (a=1, b=2, etc). Unreferenced words can be found in the Oxford English Dictionary, Second Edition, Locations, identified by country, are taken from The United States Board on Geographic Names.

Omitted Letters In Crosswords, Jeremy Morse May 2006

Omitted Letters In Crosswords, Jeremy Morse

Word Ways

Sixty or more years ago I read a humorous story - possibly by A.A. Milne - in which the two main characters were called ETAION and SHRDLU. Later I came to realise that these names were taken from a letter frequency list There are a number of these lists with small differences between them reflecting the context of the letter count. For Language on Vacation Dmitri Borgmann used one starting ETAISONHRDLU, differing from my author's only in the positioning of the S. This article is concerned with letters in crosswords, but it starts from the other end by looking at …

I remember loving to converse in Pig Latin (PL) when i was young. (To speak it, start each word with its first vowel, move the preceding consonant/s to the end and add a long A.) Some PL has even entered the language through frequent use (ixnay; amscray!). A couple of PL allusions in the November 2005 Kickshaws inspired me to seek words which in PL become other words phonetically.

Letter And Word Frequencies, Rex Gooch

Word Ways

Counts of letters and words have been made from various bodies of text over the years. Perhaps the earliest well-known corpus was the assembled by W.N. Francis and H. Kucera of Brown University (hence known as the Brown corpus). It contains one million words of American English from 1961 in 15 categories of 500 texts. If it has a use today, it is because matching studies were done of British English and Indiana English among others.
