The Efficacy Of Peer Review In Improving E.S.L. Students' Online Writing, Kathryn Fiddler Butcher
The Efficacy Of Peer Review In Improving E.S.L. Students' Online Writing, Kathryn Fiddler Butcher
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
This mixed method study investigated the development of E.S.L. writers' skills in revision when scaffolded by peer reviewers, with Lev Vygotsky's social-interactionist theory as the framework. Repeated-measures ANCOVA analyzed scores of four essay projects (first drafts and revisions) evaluated by blind holistic readings with a pretest score as covariant. Participants came from existing sections at a state university in the South in which the instruction was the same. The experimental group wrote revisions based on peer feedback; the control group received instructor feedback. Qualitative data came from semi-structured interviews with participants. Neither group showed significant improvement (at .05) in revising. …

The Effectiveness Of Illustrations In Preaching: Understanding And Retaining Biblical Truths, Ronald Rall
The Effectiveness Of Illustrations In Preaching: Understanding And Retaining Biblical Truths, Ronald Rall
Doctor of Ministry Major Applied Project
This project explored how illustrations function in sermons to facilitate the understanding and retention of Biblical truths. Personal interviews with members of the congregation and focus groups that evaluated sermons provided feedback and insights related to the effectiveness of illustrations in preaching. The researcher compiled responses from the interviews and the focus groups to draw some conclusions about how illustrations function most effectively in aiding comprehension and facilitating an effective hearing of the message. On the basis of this study the researcher offers recommendations that preachers may find helpful in using illustrations in their preaching.

Austin Powers Meets Robin Hood: Exploring Texts Through Drama, Barbara S. Ragan
Austin Powers Meets Robin Hood: Exploring Texts Through Drama, Barbara S. Ragan
Education
This research project followed an ethnically and culturally diverse, sixth-grade classroom as they shared and constructed meaning from a selected text through a variety of drama activities. Unlike most studies on drama in the classroom, this research project examined the relationship between social construction of meaning through multiple literacies and the influence this has on student engagement. This study is centered in sociocultural theory, the central premise of which describes human thought as constituted by and originating from language-based social interactions with others. This research project also addressed the concept of multiple literacies and how it applied to the extension …
Lower Tanana Athabascan Verb Paradigms, Janna Mercedes Urschel
Lower Tanana Athabascan Verb Paradigms, Janna Mercedes Urschel
Linguistics
This thesis presents documentation of verb paradigms in the Minto-Nenana dialect of the Lower Tanana Athabascan language, based on fieldwork with four native speakers of the language. Lower Tanana is a severely endangered language spoken in the Interior region of Alaska. The paradigms document the combinations of five Athabascan verb prefixes: classifier, subject, mode, conjugation, and negation. Introductory material describes the Lower Tanana language and outlines the grammar of Lower Tanana verbs, with reference to properties of verbs exemplified in the paradigms. These introductory sections are addressed to teachers and learners of the Lower Tanana language, that they might make …
A Qualitative Approach To Understanding The Everyday Difference Between Acquaintanceship And Friendship: How Western Organizational Members Discriminate These Concepts Through Communicative Interaction, Bobby A. Hines
Communication
Stewart & Bennett posited the term 'friend, ' used by members of U.S. American culture, 'may refer to anyone from a passing acquaintance to a lifetime intimate' (p. 100-101). Although American use of the term illustrates broad applicability as acceptable, Americans describe the label as having different meanings depending on those to whom they apply it. This qualitative research study utilizes narrative inquiry to gain a better understanding of the everyday lived experience of U.S. American organizational members' friendships and acquaintanceships within the organizational setting and how they perceive the way they discern between friends and acquaintances inside an organization …

Dena'ina Duch'deldih: "We Are Learning Dena'ina," Language Goals And Ideologies Among Adult Learners Of Dena'ina Athabascan, Lindsay A. Bell
Education
The work contained herein consists of two research papers that emerged from a single qualitative study of goals and ideologies of adult learners of Dena'ina Athabascan in attendance at the 2005 Dena'ina Language Institute. The study draws upon 19 semi-structured, in-depth interviews that were collected and analyzed in order to increase community control over the program and to assist in the development of future programming offered by the University of Alaska Fairbanks. The first research paper suggests that goals of attendees clustered into four categories: fluency, literacy, cultural knowledge, and community building. More important than these four stated goals were …
"Let Us Die Trying": A Post-Colonial Reading Of Velma Wallis, Seth G. Myers
"Let Us Die Trying": A Post-Colonial Reading Of Velma Wallis, Seth G. Myers
English
This essay explores the work of Velma Wallis from the perspective of post-colonial theory. Her works, Two Old Women and Bird Girl and the Man who Followed the Sun are read within this theoretical framework as volatile and resistant texts, in opposition to readings that might limit their meaning as ethnographic or otherwise. I outline the generalities of my theoretical framework with reference to Edward Said and Homi K. Bhabha, before I approach a discussion of Native American literature and Velma Wallis specifically. Within this theoretical framework, I find that Wallis resists, not only generic definition, but the larger structures …
What, If Any, Are The Ethical Obligations Of The U.S. Patent Office? A Closer Look At The Biological Sampling Of Indigenous Groups, Marina L. Whelan
What, If Any, Are The Ethical Obligations Of The U.S. Patent Office? A Closer Look At The Biological Sampling Of Indigenous Groups, Marina L. Whelan
Duke Law & Technology Review
The patenting of biological resources collected from indigenous groups has become a controversial trend. Two U.S. patents in particular, one claiming a cell-line from a 26-year old Guayami woman and one claiming a leukemia virus from a Hagahai man in Papua New Guinea, demonstrate just how volatile this issue has become. This iBrief examines how, in light of such "ethically questionable" patents, the U.S. Patent Office has failed to implement any procedures to identify or curb patent applications involving indigenous peoples.

Samuel Beckett's Late Aesthetics Of Subjectivation, Jianxi Lie
Samuel Beckett's Late Aesthetics Of Subjectivation, Jianxi Lie
Lingnan Theses
No other writer has explored so metaphysically the problem of human existence as Samuel Beckett, the Irish writer who first gained world renown in 1953 with the formal radicalism and existential angst of Waiting for Godot. In the bleakest forms, Beckett has denied human experience the most fundamental of all certainties – subjectivity and self-consciousness – and exposed conventional realism’s inability to convey the ungovernable flux of the world and the individual’s unfixed, subjective response.
Taking Beckett’s manipulation of pronominal, spatial and temporal deixis as an entry point, this thesis captures the late works in its central dilemma of Beckettian …
Artificial Societies, Virtual Worlds, And Their Meaningful Integration, Andrew Krausnick
Artificial Societies, Virtual Worlds, And Their Meaningful Integration, Andrew Krausnick
Computer Science Honors Theses
Artificial societies and virtual worlds are two areas of interest to modern social scientists that are distinctly separate in modern academic study, and are yet undeniably related. Artificial societies are multi-agent systems comprised of autonomous social agents, programmed with their own set of rules and behavior. While virtual worlds are occupied in large part by human controlled agents participating in a collective virtual experience and space. Within both types of virtual environments there can be found a scarcity of resources and intricate cross-entity interaction. This often results in the development and evolution of complex economic and cultural structures. In addition, …

Effects Of Implementing Kinesthetic Activities In The Classroom, Amanda R. Coppola
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects kinesthetic lessons could have on academic achievement as well as learner attitudes. Subjects included 72 fifth grade science students from a suburban elementary school in Southern New Jersey. There were two control groups and two experimental groups. Throughout the three-week study, the experimental groups were presented with kinesthetic lessons, visual instruction and auditory instruction. The control groups received only visual and auditory instruction. Students completed one quiz and one test during the study, along with two Likert-type attitudinal questionnaires, which were completed both before and after the study. Independent samples …

Laughing In The Shadow: The Role Of Humor In Ghost Story Telling., Melissa Ann Bentley-Edwards
Laughing In The Shadow: The Role Of Humor In Ghost Story Telling., Melissa Ann Bentley-Edwards
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The ghost story concert is a popular modern form of presenting ghost stories to ticket buying audiences and is one of the last stomping grounds of the oral tradition. Attendees come to be scared but not terrified. Tellers employ humor to release tension during the tale. When does humor release tension while maintaining the momentum of the story? When does the humor employed deflate it into a comical tale and diffuse suspense altogether?
In an effort to answer these questions, four variants of a single story, Tailypo, were analyzed for the presence of tension and humor inducing stimuli employing …
Teachers' Perceptions Of Their Preparation To Choose And Implement Effective Methods For Teaching Emergent Readers., H. Brooke Blair
Teachers' Perceptions Of Their Preparation To Choose And Implement Effective Methods For Teaching Emergent Readers., H. Brooke Blair
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Reading is not an easily learned skill for most students. I chose to look at the methodology being used by teachers in East Tennessee to instruct emerging readers. Through my review of literature, I researched reading approaches implemented in American classrooms in the last 150 years. I compared and contrasted data to determine current researchers' findings concerning the most effective techniques for teaching reading and how teachers have implemented this knowledge base into their teaching strategies.
Teachers cannot teach what they do not know. Therefore, I also researched literature addressing the growing concern among educators with teachers' preparation and professional …

Portrayals Of Appalachia In America's Major Metropolitan Newspapers., Honey Leigh Comer
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
According to Gerbner's cultivation theory, misrepresentations in the media create false realities in the minds of society. To date, much research has been done on the impact of this phenomenon on women, minority races, and the homosexual community. Little consideration has been given, however, to geographic minorities such as Appalachians. This study attempts to identify the frequency and manner of representations of Appalachia in major metropolitan newspapers across the U.S. By conducting a framing analysis on a sample of 823 individual mentions of "Appalachia" in 2005, the author is able to illustrate interesting relationships between geographic proximity and the type …
