Laying The Foundation: Health System Reform In New York State And The Primary Care Imperative, Sara J. Rosenbaum, Peter Shin, Ramona Whittington

Health Policy and Management Faculty Publications

New York State has embarked on a substantial effort to restructure its health care system as a result of rapidly escalating health care expenditures, especially with respect to Medicaid expenditures for institutional health care. But it is impossible to alter these high cost health expenditures without strengthening and expanding the primary care foundation on which New York's health system rests.

Answering The Call To Prepare Special Education Teachers At Institutions Of Catholic Higher Education, Carole W. Brown, Marie Celeste

Journal of Catholic Education

Concerns for social justice have called Catholics and others to be compassionate and supportive to children with disabilities by establishing schools and other learning opportunities to nurture this population. Special education as a field has developed over the past 40 years. This study examines the incidence, context, and nature of special education personnel preparation programs in institutions of Catholic higher education (ICHE). Through literature searches and web-based searches on the National Catholic College Admission Association website, a survey, and individual college websites, the study has identified 89 ICHE that offer special education degrees out of a total of 260 Catholic …

Contribution Of Natural Food Sources To Reproductive Behaviour, Fecundity And Longevity Of Ceratitis Cosyra, C. Fasciventris And C. Capitata (Diptera: Tephritidae), A. Manrakhan, S. A. Lux

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

The influence of food sources comprising the natural diet on the reproductive behaviour, fecundity and longevity of three African fruit flies Ceratitis cosyra (Walker), C. fasciventris (Bezzi) and C. capitata (Wiedemann) was investigated. Three natural food sources, varying in protein and sugar content, were evaluated. These included bird droppings (farm chicken), aphid honeydew and guava (Psidium guajava L.) juice. For C. fasciventris and C. capitata, flies fed on a protein-rich diet displayed higher frequency of calling, mating and oviposition than flies fed on a protein-poor diet, whilst for C. cosyra, quality of diet significantly influenced the mating behaviour of the …

Python First: A Lab-Based Digital Introduction To Computer Science, Atanas Radenski Jun 2006

Python First: A Lab-Based Digital Introduction To Computer Science, Atanas Radenski

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

The emphasis on Java and other commercial languages in CS1 has established the perception of computer science as a dry and technically difficult discipline among undecided students who are still seeking careers. This may not be a big problem during an enrolment boom, but in times of decreased enrolment such negative perception may have a devastating effect on computer science programs and therefore should not be ignored. We have made our CS1 course offerings more attractive to students (1) by introducing an easy to learn yet effective scripting language - Python, (2) by making all course resources available in a …

Developing Indicators And Measures Of Civic Outcomes For Elementary School Students, Bernadette Chi, Joann Jastrzab, Alan Melchior Jun 2006

Developing Indicators And Measures Of Civic Outcomes For Elementary School Students, Bernadette Chi, Joann Jastrzab, Alan Melchior

Civic Engagement

Over the past decade, public attention on the importance of the civic development and education of youth has grown. To address these concerns, the East Bay Conservation Corps (EBCC) Charter School opened in 1996 with the explicit mission to prepare and engage students grades K through 12 as caring citizens who are capable and motivated to fully participate in our democracy. While content standards and assessments readily exist to articulate the academic and artistic development of students, youth civic development, especially at the elementary level, has been under-conceptualized. What is needed is a more robust, comprehensive developmental framework for citizenship …

The Roots And Fallouts Of Haile Selassie's Educational Policy, Messay Kebede Jun 2006

The Roots And Fallouts Of Haile Selassie's Educational Policy, Messay Kebede

Philosophy Faculty Publications

This paper attempts to assess the impacts of Haile Selassie’s educational policy on Ethiopia’s educated elite. It also inquires into the reasons the policy was adopted in the first place. The negative role that the Ethiopian educated elite has played during, and since, the overthrow of Haile Selassie’s regime provides the context of the inquiry. Admittedly, the continuous political crises and economic stagnation of Ethiopia since the 1974 Revolution point to the leading role played by Ethiopian educated elite. The paper raises the question of knowing whether the adoption of an education system that completely relied on Western teaching staff …

The Gitter Standard: Creating A Uniform Definition Of Habitual Residence Under The Hague Convention On The Civil Aspects Of International Child Abduction, Carshae Deann Davis Jun 2006

The Gitter Standard: Creating A Uniform Definition Of Habitual Residence Under The Hague Convention On The Civil Aspects Of International Child Abduction, Carshae Deann Davis

Chicago Journal of International Law

This Development offers a discussion and analysis of the most recent cases that have formulated a definition of "habitual residence" in the context of the Convention. As the definition has evolved, US courts have differed as to how much weight should be given to the various components of the definition. It is my contention that the Gitter Standard is the most comprehensive standard that thoroughly contemplates the acclimatization of the child. To define habitual residence, the first prong of the Gitter Standard asserts that courts should inquire into the last shared intent of those entitled to fix the child's residence. …

Calling Genocide By Its Rightful Name: Lemkin's Word, Darfur, And The Un Report, David Luban Jun 2006

Calling Genocide By Its Rightful Name: Lemkin's Word, Darfur, And The Un Report, David Luban

Chicago Journal of International Law

Every student of a foreign language learns about "false friends"-words in a new language that look like words in your own but mean something different. In French, "experience" means "experiment," not "experience." In German "Konkurrenz' means "competition," while the English "concurrence" means "agreement"-in antitrust terms, the opposite of competition. Legal language, too, contains false friends-technical legal terms that closely resemble words in ordinary language but mean something different. Twenty-five years ago, as a young philosophy teacher with no legal training, I taught my first case ever in a law school classroom. It contained the word "consideration," and I proceeded on …

Women, Water And The Reclamation Of The Feminine, Colleen Kattau Jun 2006

Women, Water And The Reclamation Of The Feminine, Colleen Kattau

Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies

This paper examines the relationship between water and women particularly in terms of representative cultural expressions that underlie women's recovery of water as a fundamental human right, and explores how deep knowledge and trust of earth's bounty sustains viable and effective social change campaigns such as the right to water movement. Drawing principally upon the sociocultural analysis of ecofeminist thinkers such as Vandana Shiva and Carolyn Merchant, as well as William Marks's work on water, I critique the nature-culture dichotomy underlying approaches to water as a 'resource', and try to undermine the accepted hierarchy of 'power over nature' which by …

On Miranda And Misinterpretation: A Look At The Rights Of Native American Defendants, S. Meredith Morris Jun 2006

On Miranda And Misinterpretation: A Look At The Rights Of Native American Defendants, S. Meredith Morris

Student Thesis Honors (1996-2008)

In this paper, I posit that the Miranda ruling from the infamous case Miranda v. Arizona, when poorly applied, results in profound and blatant Eracism. I will begin Part I by stepping back in history to look at the evolution of Miranda and the cases that followed. Next, I take a look at the 2000 Census data and address the relatively current minority population percentages. Then, in Part II, I dissect Miranda, revealing what "custody" and "interrogation", the "right to an attorney" and "valid waiver" mean according to the Supreme Court. In Part III of this paper, I take a …

Request Formation By Greek-Cypriot Learners Of English And Native Speakers Of British English: A Cross-Cultural Perspective, Sorayia Fahmy Jun 2006

Request Formation By Greek-Cypriot Learners Of English And Native Speakers Of British English: A Cross-Cultural Perspective, Sorayia Fahmy

Archived Theses and Dissertations

In a world where the importance of borders may be declining, knowing what is appropriate behavior for the native speakers of a target language, and being able to apply this “appropriateness”, is of the utmost importance, if learners are to communicate effectively with native speakers (Wolfson, 1983). Second language (L2) cultural values and social relationships, knowing when to talk, what to say, what is conventional in a language, and what is not, how and to what extent to be indirect (Tannen, 1984) are only some of the considerations that learners should acknowledge when performing a speech act in a foreign …

The Reception And Translation Of Wordsworth In Japan, Waka Ishikura Jun 2006

The Reception And Translation Of Wordsworth In Japan, Waka Ishikura

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her paper, "The Reception and Translation of Wordsworth in Japan," Waka Ishikura explores the cultural dynamics involved in the understanding of Wordsworth in Japan since the late nineteenth century by examining the ways in which the Japanese encountered him in a broader historical context and the ways in which the development of language modernization in Japan affected the processes of reception and translation. Ishikura's investigation of the topic leads not only to an elucidation of the fate of the English poet in Japan but also to new insights into the ways in which literary or semiotic relations have influenced …

The Literary Archaeologies Of Théophile Gautier, Sasha Colby Jun 2006

The Literary Archaeologies Of Théophile Gautier, Sasha Colby

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article, "The Literary Archaeologies of Théophile Gautier," Sasha Colby considers the relationship between archaeology as an emerging nineteenth-century discipline and the history of modern poetics. By explicating Gautier's fiction and poetry within an archaeological context, Colby suggests the ways in which archaeology became not only an intriguing subject for late romantics and early modernists but also the ways in which archaeology conditioned an excavational mode of fictional and poetic practice. Incorporating history, Egyptology, psychology, and literary theory, Colby explores the impact of the archaeological enterprise on the nineteenth-century imagination through the work of one of its most influential …

Nabokov And World Literature, Charles Stanley Ross Jun 2006

Nabokov And World Literature, Charles Stanley Ross

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his paper "Nabokov and World Literature" Charles Stanley Ross thinks through the relationship between comparative literature and cultural studies by considering the absence of Nabokov's work in The Norton Anthology of World Literature. The problem seems to be that Nabokov's works are not susceptible to the kind of varying interpretations favored by the Norton's editors, although in practice, Azar Nafisi's Reading Lolita in Tehran, for example, shows that even Nabokov's tightly controlled fiction can generate diverse responses. The more complex modes of reading that form the basis of David Damrosch's What is World Literature? are used to interrogate just …
