If The Train Should Jump The Track ...: Divergent Interpretations Of State And Federal Employment Discrimination Statutes, Alex B. Long Jan 2006

If The Train Should Jump The Track ...: Divergent Interpretations Of State And Federal Employment Discrimination Statutes, Alex B. Long

Scholarly Works

As interpretational issues surrounding federal employment discrimination statutes have become more complex and controversial, there have arisen more opportunities for parallel state anti-discrimination law to jump the track and take alternative courses. Not surprisingly, when dealing with their own parallel state statutes, a number of state appellate courts in recent years have chosen this course of action. Even where state and federal employment discrimination have not yet taken different paths, the potential for such divergent interpretations of state and federal anti-discrimination law has increased in recent years to the point where we may enter an era not unlike that of …

Sluicing Puzzles In Russian, Lydia Grebenyova Jan 2006

Sluicing Puzzles In Russian, Lydia Grebenyova

Linguistics

The general goal of this paper is to explore the properties of sluicing (IPellipsis) in Russian and to see how the Russian data shed light on the general processes underlying the phenomenon of sluicing. The first issue we will address is what positions wh-remnants occupy in sluicing constructions in Russian, considering the properties of wh-movement in Russian. We will then turn to sluicing with multiple wh-remnants, which I will refer to as multiple sluicing, following Takahashi (1994). Here we will investigate how the interpretative properties of multiple interrogatives in Russian affect the multiple sluicing possibilities in this language. Finally, I …

Multiple Left-Branch Extraction Under Sluicing, Lydia Grebenyova Jan 2006

Multiple Left-Branch Extraction Under Sluicing, Lydia Grebenyova

Linguistics

The general goal of this paper is to explore the interaction between multiple whfronting, left-branch extraction (LBE) and sluicing, with the hope of finding insights into the nature of each of the phenomena. One of the issues I will address is why, even though LBE is available in certain multiple wh-fronting languages (e.g. Russian, Serbo-Croatian), multiple LBE is prohibited in these languages. In order to solve this puzzle, we will take a close look at the processes underlying LBE as compared to regular wh-movement. In Section 3, I will argue that LBE, unlike regular wh-movement, is headmovement to a Topic …

Anti-Ethnography?, Ian Barnard Jan 2006

Anti-Ethnography?, Ian Barnard

English Faculty Articles and Research

"Many of the ongoing difficulties teachers face revolve around the 'translation' of disciplinary knowledge—especially critical theory—into pedagogical praxis. It often seems that our teaching lags behind our theoretical knowledge by about two decades, and sometimes we wonder if it will ever catch up. This sense of disjunction has been compounded by the difficulty of teaching postmodern understandings of subjectivity, truth, and epistemology in an increasingly commodified teaching context, where consumers expect to purchase a clear, identifiable, and literally usable product, and where 'knowledge' often means easily digestible and repeatable content rather than analytic skills, critical understandings, or complex world views. …

The Male Dancer In The Middle East And Central Asia, Anthony Shay Jan 2006

The Male Dancer In The Middle East And Central Asia, Anthony Shay

Pomona Faculty Publications and Research

"That night ‘Abdi Jan’s troupe had been called so that the harem occupants could watch the show. Of course, you remember ‘Abdi well. Let me, nonetheless, give you a description of his looks. He was a lad of about twelve or thirteen, with large black eyes, languid and incredibly beautiful and attractive. His face was tanned and good-looking, his lips crimson, and his hair black and thick. Renowned throughout the town, the boy had a thousand adoring lovers. Being a dancer, however, he was unworthy of being anyone’s beloved." (Taj Al-Sultana 1993, 163) Within this quotation the reader may find …

Machine Scoring Of Student Essays: Truth And Consequences, Patricia Freitag Ericsson, Richard H. Haswell Jan 2006

Machine Scoring Of Student Essays: Truth And Consequences, Patricia Freitag Ericsson, Richard H. Haswell

All USU Press Publications

The current trend toward machine-scoring of student work, Ericsson and Haswell argue, has created an emerging issue with implications for higher education across the disciplines, but with particular importance for those in English departments and in administration. The academic community has been silent on the issue—some would say excluded from it—while the commercial entities who develop essay-scoring software have been very active. Machine Scoring of Student Essays is the first volume to seriously consider the educational mechanisms and consequences of this trend, and it offers important discussions from some of the leading scholars in writing assessment.

Reading Chinese Fortune Cookie: The Making Of Chinese American Rhetoric, Luming Mao Jan 2006

Reading Chinese Fortune Cookie: The Making Of Chinese American Rhetoric, Luming Mao

All USU Press Publications

LuMing Mao offers an important discussion of the rhetoric of Chinese American speakers, which has wide implications for the teaching of writing in English and for our understanding of cross-cultural influences in discourse. Recent scholarship tends to explain such influences as contributing to language hybridity—an advance over the traditional "deficit model." But Mao suggests that the "hybridity" approach is perhaps too arid or sanitized, missing rich nuances of mutual exchange, resistance, or even subversion. Through his concept of "togetherness in difference, Mao suggests that speakers of hybrid discourse may not be attempting the standard (and failing), but instead may be …

The Study Of Urban Form In Canada, Jason Gilliland, Pierre Gauthier Jan 2006

The Study Of Urban Form In Canada, Jason Gilliland, Pierre Gauthier

Geography & Environment Publications

This paper examines contributions to the study of urban form in Canada by French and English researchers working in a variety of disciplines, especially architecture, planning, geography, and history. Instead of discussing contributions purely along traditional linguistic or disciplinary lines, the authors use a novel classification scheme to identify and categorize significant works according to their particular epistemological perspective, before describing noteworthy contributions of various academic disciplines by key authors and research themes. The most significant contributions to the study of urban form in Canada have come from two largely isolated camps: first, architects/planners, mostly from Québec, who examine form …

Mapping Urban Morphology: A Classification Scheme For Interpreting Contributions To The Study Of Urban Form, Pierre Gauthier, Jason Gilliland Jan 2006

Mapping Urban Morphology: A Classification Scheme For Interpreting Contributions To The Study Of Urban Form, Pierre Gauthier, Jason Gilliland

Geography & Environment Publications

Urban morphology is a thriving field of enquiry involving researchers from a wide diversity of disciplinary, linguistic and cultural backgrounds. While this diversity has helped advance our understanding of the complexity of urban form, confusion and controversy has also arisen over the various theoretical formulations forwarded by researchers from different philosophical and epistemological backgrounds. With the aim of improving intelligibility in the field, this paper proposes a straightforward scheme to identify, classify and interpret, or ‘map’, individual contributions to the study of urban form according to their respective theoretical or epistemological perspectives. Drawing upon epistemological discussions familiar to the readers …

'Struggling With Language' : Indigenous Movements For Linguistic Security And The Politics Of Local Community, Robert Lee Nichols Jan 2006

'Struggling With Language' : Indigenous Movements For Linguistic Security And The Politics Of Local Community, Robert Lee Nichols

Aboriginal Policy Research Consortium International (APRCi)

In this article, I explore the relationship between linguistic diversity and political power. Specifically, I outline some of the ways that linguistic diversity has served as a barrier to the centralization of power, thus constraining, for example, the political practice of empire-formation. A brief historical example of this dynamic is presented in the case of Spanish colonialism of the 16th-century. The article proceeds then to demonstrate how linguistic diversity remains tied to struggles against forms of domination. I argue that in contemporary indigenous movements for linguistic security, the languages themselves are not merely conceived of as the object of the …

Distilling Rhetorical Information From Scholarly Biomedical Literature, Trevor Alistair Maynard Jan 2006

Distilling Rhetorical Information From Scholarly Biomedical Literature, Trevor Alistair Maynard

Digitized Theses

Knowledge in the field of biomedicine is booming. In order to effectively stay on the frontiers of their fields, researchers need automated tools to manage the ever increasing quantity of scholarly literature. As an aid to developing these tools, we suggest that the rhetoric found in the biomedical genre needs to be studied. This study is enabled by the availability of full text repositories such as BioMed Central and PubMed Central. To this end, this thesis proposes a model of rhetoric that captures the descriptive purpose of each sentence within a biomedical research article. This model proposes five Rhetorical Zones: …

Community And The Meal: A Rhetorical Investigation, Richard J. Mills Jr. Jan 2006

Community And The Meal: A Rhetorical Investigation, Richard J. Mills Jr.

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

From ancient Greece to post modernity, the meal as a focal point of community life and a cultural practice, and the meaning of eating, have been the focus for numerous scholarly studies and their rhetorical significance. This dissertation will define how interpersonal communication and the enactment of the meal are rhetorical partners within a community. Cultural differences, communication style, and values affect one's perception of the culture's narrative structure, inclusion and exclusion, private and public space, and civility and incivility practices in relationship to the community. These differences impact the meal, food choices, tastes, and communication style and ultimately shape …

The Children Of The Night: Stoker's Dreadful Reading And The Plot Of Dracula, Dick Collins Jan 2006

The Children Of The Night: Stoker's Dreadful Reading And The Plot Of Dracula, Dick Collins

Journal of Dracula Studies

My intention is to suggest that the plot of Dracula was modeled on the plot of The String of Pearls, the Penny Dreadful serial that created Sweeney Todd. I am not suggesting that Stoker deliberately or consciously “stole” the plot and “rewrote it” with “differences”; nor can I prove he had read it, let alone that he had it on the desk as he wrote. Instead I am making the altogether more ordinary claim that Stoker was familiar with the earlier book, and others like it; that the memory of it provided him with a basic framework of plot; and …

"The Coin Of Our Realm": Blood And Images In Dracula 2000, Alan S. Ambrisco, Lance Svehla

Journal of Dracula Studies

Since the publication of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, the vampire has always been our long lost twin, always held our gaze because we found ourselves translated there. Whether represented as demonized monopolist, stereotyped Jew, feudal aristocrat, or iconoclastic youth,1 what remains in all manifestations of the vampire is its ability to become what the culture both desires and reviles, to seduce in the act of producing fear. Wes Craven Presents: Dracula 2000, a film directed by Patrick Lussier, portrays the notorious vampire reveling in a world not only of blood but also of images. This rewriting of Dracula’s legend engages anxieties …

Lyric Subjectivity, Ethics, Contemporary Poetics: Claudia Rankine, Fanny Howe, Elizabeth Robinson, Maureen Gallagher Jan 2006

Lyric Subjectivity, Ethics, Contemporary Poetics: Claudia Rankine, Fanny Howe, Elizabeth Robinson, Maureen Gallagher

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation investigates ethics and lyric subjectivity in the writings of three American women poets. I consider select poems and poetics of Claudia Rankine, Fanny Howe, and Elizabeth Robinson, in order to argue that their postlanguage lyric poetry retains lyric subjectivity and reformulates it as ethical insofar as it is "circumspective" or "other-oriented"; that is, the lyric "I" is depicted as constituted through its relations with alterity. I apply contemporary literary-ethical methodology, notably the ethical philosophy of Emmanuel Levinas, the poetics of Paul Celan, the hauntology of Jacques Derrida, and the poethics of Joan Retallack, in order to demonstrate how …
