Mother Knows Best: Maternal Experience And Choice Of Infant Sleep Position, Meghan Lane Nov 2006

Mother Knows Best: Maternal Experience And Choice Of Infant Sleep Position, Meghan Lane

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Purpose: The purpose of this project was to examine the associations between maternal child-rearing experience, choice of infant sleeping position, and the source, nature and trust of advice received about infant sleeping position in a high-risk, primarily African-American population. Background: The number of deaths attributed to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) has decreased since the initiation of the Back to Sleep campaign in 1994. Although this change has benefited all ethnic groups, African-American infants are still twice as likely to succumb to SIDS as Caucasian infants. Design/Methods: We conducted 668 face-to-face standardized interviews with mothers of infants in Connecticut, Georgia …

#13, Michael Frank

Theses

This thesis is an investigation into the nature of conceptual art and it's existence in an increasingly secluded and digitized cultural. The context of this paper exists within a realm of academia and attempts to provide an intellectual setting for the installation entitled #12. During this examination the dissertation does not limit itself to a particular medium, but rather attempts to analyze imaging and art from a perspective that takes into account the interactive dichotomies and paradoxical notions that, as a society we not only create but define our existence. As an artist I view the act prior to creation …

Trust, Paul Joseph Zak Nov 2006

Trust, Paul Joseph Zak

The Gruter Institute Working Papers on Law, Economics, and Evolutionary Biology

Trust pervades every aspect of our daily lives, from business transactions to dealings with loved-ones, yet why we trust others in some instances but not others is little understood. At an aggregate level, surveys of trustworthiness show enormous differences across countries, from 3% in Brazil to 65% in Norway. This article reports on new research that has characterized the legal, social, economic, and environmental factors that cause trust to be high or low. It also reports on laboratory experiments that demonstrate that trust has a neurophysiological basis. This research shows that low trust is a fundamental cause of poverty, but …

Compensation For Property Under The European Convention On Human Rights, Tom Allen Nov 2006

Compensation For Property Under The European Convention On Human Rights, Tom Allen

ExpressO

This Article investigates the nature of the right to property guaranteed under the First Protocol to the European Convention on Human Rights ('P1-1'). It argues that the European Court of Human Rights has been torn between two theories of the right to property. The first is the "integrated theory", and it holds that the right to property shares common values and purposes with other Convention rights. Hence, the interpretation of P1-1 should reflect principles developed in the interpretation of other Convention rights. It is argued that the application of the integrated theory should support a "social model" of property. The …

Acculturation Status And Heavy Alcohol Use Among Mexican American College Students: Investigating The Moderating Role Of Gender, Byron L. Zamboanga, Marcela Raffaelli, Nicholas J. Horton Nov 2006

Acculturation Status And Heavy Alcohol Use Among Mexican American College Students: Investigating The Moderating Role Of Gender, Byron L. Zamboanga, Marcela Raffaelli, Nicholas J. Horton

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

We examined whether gender moderates the association between acculturation and heavy alcohol use. The sample consisted of 126 Mexican American college students (Mean age = 24.7 years; 57% female) who completed self-report measures of heavy alcohol use, acculturation status (global acculturation and ethnic identity), and relevant control variables (age, peer alcohol use). Multivariable regression revealed that higher levels of ethnic identity were associated with greater frequency of heavy alcohol among men. Conversely, neither measure of acculturation was associated with heavy alcohol use among women. These findings suggest that interventions for Latino/a students should consider the role of culturally relevant variables …

Ethnoprimatology: Toward Reconciliation Of Biological And Cultural Anthropology, Erin P. Riley Nov 2006

Ethnoprimatology: Toward Reconciliation Of Biological And Cultural Anthropology, Erin P. Riley

Ecological and Environmental Anthropology (University of Georgia)

One of the hallmarks of the discipline of anthropology is its holistic approach to the study of what it means to be human. A perennial challenge to the discipline, however, is the question of whether biological and cultural anthropology can truly coexist given their traditionally disparate epistemologies and methodologies. In this paper, I argue that the emerging field of ethnoprimatology, which focuses on the ecological and cultural interconnections between human and nonhuman primates, has real potential to bridge these two subfields. I support my argument by discussing the theoretical rationale of an ethnoprimatological approach with regard to the notion of …

{Ontology: Resource} X {Matching : Mapping} X {Schema : Instance} :: Components Of The Same Challenge, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

Ontologies enable us to elevate syntactic and structural processing in an information system/Web to an information system/Web powered with semantic processing. Experience has shown that monolithic and tightly coupled approaches seldom succeed, and majority of information systems and applications will need to deal with plurality of ontologies in a loosely coupled environment (i.e., independently evolving ontologies and inter-ontology relationships, existence of different contexts for different users/applications etc.) Development of such loosely-coupled multi-ontology environments entails development of techniques for ontology mapping/alignment, multi-ontology query processing, and much more.

The Effect Of Presented Outcome Order On Patients' Decisions Concerning Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Repair, Joseph Cousin Nov 2006

The Effect Of Presented Outcome Order On Patients' Decisions Concerning Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Repair, Joseph Cousin

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Background: As the field of medicine is often described as one that combines science and art, it must be noted that data are only considered influential if understood by the person or persons deciding whether or not to use such data. Thus, psychological principles that govern the use of data play almost as equal a role as the medical development of that data. This study applies the psychologically-derived concepts of framing effects to the field of medicine, in an attempt to determine whether risk order should be considered as a framing effect. Specifically, this study used a randomized double-blinded controlled …

Fuzzy Neural Network Models For Multispectral Image Analysis, Arun D. Kulkarni, Sara Mccaslin Nov 2006

Fuzzy Neural Network Models For Multispectral Image Analysis, Arun D. Kulkarni, Sara Mccaslin

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Fuzzy neural networks (FNNs) provide a new approach for classification of multispectral data and to extract and optimize classification rules. Neural networks deal with issues on a numeric level, whereas fuzzy logic deals with them on a semantic or linguistic level. FNNs synthesize fuzzy logic and neural networks. Recently, there has been growing interest in the research community not only to understand how FNNs arrive at particular decisions but how to decode information stored in the form of connection strengths in the network. In this paper, we propose fuzzy neural network models for classification of pixels in multispectral images and …

Preparing Engineers For The Global Workplace, John M. Grandin Nov 2006

Preparing Engineers For The Global Workplace, John M. Grandin

Online Journal for Global Engineering Education

The University of Rhode Island takes pride in the fact that 20% of its undergraduate engineering students complete a Bachelor of Arts degree in German, French or Spanish (and soon Chinese) along with their BS engineering degree. Its distinctive International Engineering Program (IEP) is characterized by the two degrees, but also by the fact that each IEP student spends the fourth year of the five-year curriculum abroad, completing a semester of study at a partner university and a six-month internship with affiliated global companies. Over 200 undergraduates have completed the IEP curriculum, which is now well institutionalized in the culture …
