Ethiopian Language Policy And Health Promotion In Oromia, Begna Dugassa Dec 2006

Ethiopian Language Policy And Health Promotion In Oromia, Begna Dugassa

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

In the time of HIV/AIDS, epidemics for which we have no vaccination or cure, public health is bound entirely to depend on the traditional health education strategies to stop or contain this disease. This reality demands that we travel extra miles and thoroughly employ every health promotion tool at our disposal. The Ottawa Charter for health promotion stressed the need for public policy to create supportive social conditions for health. This necessitates a commitment to enduring social conditions for health and raises topics that have been neglected by the traditional public health scholars. A close examination of the colonial language …

Generating Paraphrases With Greater Variation Using Syntactic Phrases, Rebecca Diane Madsen Dec 2006

Generating Paraphrases With Greater Variation Using Syntactic Phrases, Rebecca Diane Madsen

Theses and Dissertations

Given a sentence, a paraphrase generation system produces a sentence that says the same thing but usually in a different way. The paraphrase generation problem can be formulated in the machine translation paradigm; instead of translation of English to a foreign language, the system translates an English sentence (for example) to another English sentence. Quirk et al. (2004) demonstrated this approach to generate almost 90% acceptable paraphrases. However, most of the sentences had little variation from the original input sentence. Leveraging syntactic information, this thesis project presents an approach that successfully generated more varied paraphrase sentences than the approach of …

Disability, Disparate Impact, And Class Actions, Michael Ashley Stein, Michael E. Waterstone Dec 2006

Disability, Disparate Impact, And Class Actions, Michael Ashley Stein, Michael E. Waterstone

Duke Law Journal

Following Title VII's enactment, group-based employment discrimination actions flourished due to disparate impact theory and the class action device. Courts recognized that subordination that defined a group's social identity was also sufficient legally to bind members together, even when relief had to be issued individually. Woven through these cases was a notion of panethnicity that united inherently unrelated groups into a common identity, for example, Asian Americans. Stringent judicial interpretation subsequently eroded both legal frameworks and it has become increasingly difficult to assert collective employment actions, even against discriminatory practices affecting an entire group. This deconstruction has immensely disadvantaged persons …

No One Flunks Museum: An Overview Of Learning Theory And Its Implementation In Formal And Informal History Education, Nichole D. Smith Dec 2006

No One Flunks Museum: An Overview Of Learning Theory And Its Implementation In Formal And Informal History Education, Nichole D. Smith

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

The transition of museums from institutions for the knowledgeable to places for those seeking knowledge has brought about a need for those educating in museums to better understand the ways in which people learn. This paper introduces and explains theories, psychological and educational, that are applicable to learning such as Constructivism, Multiple Intelligences, and the Contextual Model of Learning. Observations of informal and formal history and social studies lessons or programs presented to students ages 3-16 provide the framework for understanding how well these theories of learning are being implemented in the museum. Comparison of history museum programs (informal education) …

Elaborating The Grounding Of The Knowledge Base On Language And Learning For Preservice Literacy Teachers, Carolyn L. Piazza, Cynthia Wallat

The Qualitative Report

This purpose of this article is to present a qualitative inquiry into the genesis of sociolinguistic s and the contributions of eight sociolinguistic pioneers. This inquiry, based on an historical interpretation of events, reformulates the concept of validation as the social construction of a scientific knowledge base, and explicates three themes that offer a set of sociolinguistic constructs, questions, and propositions that can provide aspiring teachers with a frame of reference and set of guidelines for teaching language and literacy. An implication section, at the end of the article, illustrates sociolinguistic components that can be added to course syllabi in …

Preservice Teachers’ Professional Development In A Community Of Practice Summer Literacy Camp For Children At-Risk: A Sociocultural Perspective, Janet C. Richards Dec 2006

Preservice Teachers’ Professional Development In A Community Of Practice Summer Literacy Camp For Children At-Risk: A Sociocultural Perspective, Janet C. Richards

The Qualitative Report

This inquiry applied an innovative sociocultural framework to examine transformations in preservice teachers’ professional development as they worked with children at-risk in a summer literacy camp. The camp incorporated a community of practice model in which teams of master’s and doctoral students mentored small groups of preservice teachers. The study examined preservice teachers ’ learning following Rogoff’s (1995, 1997) notions of the personal, interpersonal, and community planes of analysis. The research also employed a postmodernist crystallization imagery to capture multiple perspectives on the preservice teachers’ growth. The study assigns importance to the contextual dimensions in which learning takes place, and …

Looking At The Overlooked: Portraits Of Law School Deans, Peter Goodrich Dec 2006

Looking At The Overlooked: Portraits Of Law School Deans, Peter Goodrich

Articles

The article examines the role of portraits in law schools, arguing that these images are not merely decorative but serve as powerful symbols that shape institutional identity and the legal profession. Despite their ubiquity, these portraits are often overlooked, yet they function as megalographs, inscribing and disseminating the values, history, and authority of the institution. The author contends that these visual elements play a crucial role in the formation of legal identity and the symbolic order of law schools.

Reiterated Commemoration: Hiroshima As National Trauma, Hiro Saito Dec 2006

Reiterated Commemoration: Hiroshima As National Trauma, Hiro Saito

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

This article examines historical transformations of Japanese collective memory of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima by utilizing a theoretical framework that combines a model of reiterated problem solving and a theory of cultural trauma. I illustrate how the event of the nuclear fallout in March 1954 allowed actors to consolidate previously fragmented commemorative practices into a master frame to define the postwar Japanese identity in terms of transnational commemoration of "Hiroshima." I also show that nationalization of trauma of "Hiroshima" involved a shift from pity to sympathy in structures of feeling about the event. This historical study suggests that a …

The Critique Of Arab Thought: Mohammed Arkoun's Deconstruction Method, Siti Rohmah Soekarba Dec 2006

The Critique Of Arab Thought: Mohammed Arkoun's Deconstruction Method, Siti Rohmah Soekarba

Makara Human Behavior Studies in Asia

Mohammed Arkoun is one of international modern Islamic thinkers that his thought comes into Islamic thinking discourses in Indonesia recently. His Islamic thought was influenced by the modern philosophical concepts such as ‘myths’ of Ricouer, postmodern concepts like ‘discourse’ and ‘episteme’, which were developed by Foucault as well as ‘deconstruction’ of Derrida. If Derrida focused on deconstruction as a final concept, on the other hand Arkoun insisted that ‘deconstruction’ must be followed by ‘reconstruction’ of a discourse. Arkoun’s reconstruction leaves the limitation, the rigidity and deviation from the past. Arkoun proposes two ways: firstly it is ‘ijtihad’ and subsequently it …

After almost 5 decades of authoritarian one-man rule, Fidel Castro remains firmly in power. On July 31, his brother, Raul Castro, assumed provisional presidential power after an official announcement that Fidel was ill and would undergo surgery. What would be the strategic and political implications …

The Importance Of Continuity In First Language Education For Learning A Second Language, Stephen M. Shepherd Dec 2006

The Importance Of Continuity In First Language Education For Learning A Second Language, Stephen M. Shepherd

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Scores from the Texas Reading Proficiency Tests in English (RPTE) for ninety-four Newcomer ESL students were analyzed to understand the differences between students who had attended school continuously and those who had discontinuity in their first language (LI) education in their home country. This research was performed in the Rio Grande Valley of South Texas, a few miles from the border with Mexico. The hypothesis is that students who have gaps in their L1 education will not learn to read as quickly in English as those who had none since the former are lacking cognitive skills which the latter already …

Writing The Nation: Ignacio Manuel Altamirano's Romantic Vision And Porfirian Development, Jason C. Denzin Nov 2006

Writing The Nation: Ignacio Manuel Altamirano's Romantic Vision And Porfirian Development, Jason C. Denzin

Department of History: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

As articulated in Ignacio Manuel Altamirano’s Romantic novel El Zarco (1888) and the accounts of contemporary travelers, various interpretations about the pace and course of the country’s development abounded in Mexico during the late nineteenth-century. The current project evaluates El Zarco as a historical text and uses it as a window into the Porfirian nation-building project. By comparing the vision outlined in the novel with the published accounts of contemporary travelers this project demonstrates the contested nature of development among Mexico’s national elites during the Porfiriato. This thesis argues that from the competing visions of national development specific categories for …

Variation And Change In Spanish Future Temporal Expression: Rates, Constraints, And Grammaticalization, Jessica Elana Aaron

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

This quantitative, diachronic study of variation between the Spanish Synthetic Future cantaré (Sf) and the Periphrastic Future voy a cantar (PF) tackles the development of these two expressions within and outside the realm of future temporal reference in Spanish since Old Spanish through the early 21st century. Working within the framework or grammaticization and variation theory, this study begins with a qualitative and quantitative form-based analysis of each form, based on over 5,500 tokens extracted from a 935.000-word written and oral corpus.

In the case of the SF, the relationship between SF occurrences in future temporal contexts and those in …
